Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says no positives can be taken from Wednesday night's 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
The fierce rivals met at Old Trafford in the third round of the Capital One Cup and it was United that came out winners thanks to an early second-half goal from Javier Hernandez.
But despite a battling performance and a the much-anticipated return of Luis Suarez to Liverpool's starting line-up, Sky Sports football expert Jamie Carragher believes it's hard for Reds' fans to see the positives.
"I remember David Moyes a couple weeks ago saying United did so well after losing at Anfield. But when you lose a game of this magnitude I sometimes feel you have to say that you've lost - it is that important a game that you can't look for too many positives - the result has gone for me.
"We can't say Liverpool played poorly tonight, but we shouldn't be looking at it positively - When you go out of a cup competition to Manchester United - you shouldn't be talking about a good performance."
Small things
The loss makes it two in as many games for Liverpool and Carragher believes the goal they conceded was down to small mistakes.
"When you talk about big games like this, it's about the small things and Jose Enrique has lost his man at the corner for the goal and then game over, you're out of the cup.
"They played a different system; it worked to a certain extent. Suarez and Daniel Sturridge's partnership looked sharp and together, and the formation looked like it could get the two of them to play, but once you go out of the cup to Manchester United I don't think you should be looking at it and saying 'Liverpool played well... we did this well'."
Suarez still special
The game saw Luis Suarez make his first appearance for the club since his 10-match ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic in April this year and Carragher thinks manager Brendan Rodgers is beginning to work out his team's best formation to use strikers Suarez and Sturridge to their full potential.
"Every time the ball comes to Suarez's feet you think something special is going to happen, he was a big positive - but that's something you look back on in a few days time when you look at the positives.
"I agree with Brendan Rodgers that three at the back worked. Early on, Sturridge and Suarez up front looked like a good partnership.
"If you bring Philippe Coutinho in behind that front two in that formation - that could be the way he goes eventually because he's got that many centre backs. At the weekend he played four of them.
"To get them in he may need to go three at the back, then you get your two up front, Coutinho in his position - it may be a really good formation for Liverpool.
"I think to a certain extent it worked tonight, but when you lose to Man United for me it's not important."

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre says the club have secured 90% of the properties required for the redevelopment of Anfield.
Ayre was speaking at the Sports Industry breakfast in London, when he explained the progress of the plans:
“Our ambition is to stay at Anfield, and we’re about 90% down the road in securing proprieties affected by redevelopment. I’m reasonably confident, the first phase will be closer to 60,000 capacity.”
Ayre discussed the club’s financial figures and assured that stadium development is “easily manageable”:
“The business is in excellent health and moving towards a profitable position. The stadium’s redevelopment is easily manageable.”
Ayre also discussed the Luis Suarez saga, explaining that the club have worked with him since the Ivanovic incident:
“We’ve worked a lot with him since the Ivanovic incident and he’s back to what he’s best at – terrorising defenders.
“We all move on together. Hard work and lessons have been learnt post-Evra and we now have a process in place for any crisis. Not a Suarez crisis, just any one.”
Ayre admitted that the incident was “damaging to the brand”.

A quick look at the good and bad from last night’s 1-0 defeat to Man United in the League Cup.
Positives
The return of Suarez
The obvious one, it was great to see him back playing. His drive, energy, direct play. Just what we’ve been lacking. It will be exciting to see him and Sturridge back forming a partnership.
Form of Mignolet
Another couple of excellent saves from the Belgian.
Formation
It was perhaps an odd time to try it, but the 3-4-3 did show potential signs of working. Will Rodgers stick with it for more than one game this Sunday? The back three are less exposed by Liverpool’s lightweight midfield and it allows Suarez, Sturridge and Moses to combine effectively in the attacking areas.
Negatives
Set Pieces
They remain Liverpool’s achilles heel, no matter how many defenders Brendan Rodgers puts on the pitch. Another 1-0 defeat arrived courtesy of poor defending on a corner.
Fitness
We’re only seven games into the season and an alarming number of players look very tired. Namely the key trio of Lucas, Gerrard and Sturridge – all three need a rest, last night should have been the opportunity to do so. Gerrard has looked especially tired since the international break. Another game without a second half goal.
Sturridge’s decision making
He’s clearly a superb goal-scorer but his decision making in the final third can be very poor and this was demonstrated again last night. His lack of a right foot plagues him when put in on that side. He needs to work on both.
Lucas
The Brazilian was well off the pace last night. Thankfully acknowledged by Rodgers and subbed him after 67 minutes. Should Henderson be given a game in the middle alongside Gerrard? Will the return of Joe Allen to fitness provide an opportunity to rest Lucas?
Kelly’s fitness
A lot of people have been asking why Martin Kelly hasn’t been getting back in the team this season after a long injury lay off. Well maybe now its’ clear, brought on as a right-sided wing-back, it ended up with Kolo Toure bombing forward in the final stages to try get the goal back with Kelly looking completely exhausted despite only 25 minutes on the pitch.
Failure to give any youngsters an opportunity
It’s difficult to see when the likes of Wisdom, Ilori, Alberto and Ibe will get a game again now. A missed opportunity and instead key players were wasted ahead of an important League match on Sunday.

It’s been a strange start to the season for Brendan Rodgers‘ Liverpool, and already the manager is talking about the January transfer window.
Think Brendan Rodgers and you think of a manager with a clear philosophy, a system he knows he wants his team to play and an ability to coach and develop players, especially younger ones. Those are large reasons he was given the Liverpool manager’s job 15 months ago.
So how come, just 5 League games and 2 League Cup games into his second season, Rodgers appears to have lost all direction?
“We have to make sure we stay up in the top six in the league and keep fighting,” said Rodgers after the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. “Hopefully we can reinforce again in January.”
Merely seven games in, having brought in seven new signings in the summer, and yet the manager who was been brought in to develop players is already looking towards the January transfer window.
A year ago, you could understand such a quote, but now it’s puzzling to say the least. We all knew where the squad needed strengthening in the summer, not that a defensive midfielder was signed.
Rodgers has made some odd decisions over the past month or two. He signed two centre-backs for a combined fee of around £24m, then played Martin Skrtel in every game since after hardly playing him for the six months prior.
Then there’s the change of formation, last night completely throwing his idealised 4-3-3 formation out the window and going with a 3-4-1-2 shape. Usually such tactical changes are best implemented during a pre-season, or after thorough work on the training ground. You can safely assume neither had happened here, with the Southampton defeat only four days ago.
Personally, I felt the formation last night worked pretty well, but it’s odd that a manager who has preached his philosophy so strongly to all of a sudden completely change his tune. What’s caused this change? Is it because he feels it’s the only way the side can accommodate Suarez and Sturridge?
Rodgers is a manager who has a reputation for trusting young players, “they’ll run through a brick wall for you” he famously said a year ago. Yet this season he has done far from that. He’s preferred to play Kolo Toure out of position than Andre Wisdom at right back and he refuses to drop Steven Gerrard despite the skipper looking in desperate need of a rest.
Now his side are out of the League Cup, the chances for Raheem Sterling, Luis Alberto, new £7m man Tiago Ilori, Andre Wisdom and the likes are going to be very, very slim.
The League Cup should be a competition that is used for two things; the opportunity to rest key players who need resting – see Lucas, Gerrard and Sturridge last night; and give opportunities to young squad players – such as Sterling, Alberto and Ilori last night.
The League Cup should not have been a priority for Liverpool this season. In fact, 100% of the club’s, and manager’s, focus should be purely on finishing in the top four which is incredibly crucial for the short and long term future of the Football Club.
Last night, the team selection should have reflected that we face a tough game, made tough by the sacking of Di Canio, at Sunderland on Sunday. Even just resting the trio of players named above would have been sensible.
Perhaps here would be an apt time to bring up the matter of fitness levels this season and how Rodgers’ side are still without a second half League goal and half the squad look completely worn out. Were they over-trained in pre-season?
This isn’t an attack on Rodgers, but some of what he has been doing of late is out of character, either that or the last 14 months were. Here is a manager who prides himself on coaching and developing players, yet he’s gone from a year ago rightly saying we didn’t have the numbers in the squad, to now saying we don’t have the quality in the squad.
Perhaps the questions raised above are harsh on Rodgers? After-all, a manager can’t be blamed for Enrique leaving his man unmarked six yards out on a corner, Lucas constantly giving the ball away in midfield, or Daniel Sturridge not having a right foot.
Nonetheless, Rodgers shouldn’t have wasted so much effort collectively on a competition that has literally no significance to the overall single goal of the Football Club at present – to get back into the top four. Hopefully now he will be forced to focus on this, and won’t repeat the same mistakes in January when the FA Cup starts.

Manchester United's 1-0 over Liverpool in the Capital One Cup has taken the pressure off David Moyes, says Gary Neville.
After a disappointing 4-1 defeat in the Manchester derby on Sunday, there was relief for Moyes as Javier Hernandez scored an early second-half goal to hand United a place in the fourth round at the expense of their fierce rivals.
It would be almost unthinkable for United fans if the team were lost to both of their biggest rivals within four days and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes this "big game" win will ease the pressure on the new manager.
He told Sky Sports: "There's always a huge inquest, especially after a defeat like that in the derby and the pressure does build.
"Relieved is the word to describe Moyes, he was happy at the end. You could see there was a sparkle in his eyes that he's got a big win under his belt.
"It was tough there, it was a hard-fought victory that. Liverpool didn't play badly in the game and had a few chances. United had to dig in there to get that result."
Awkward Liverpool
For Liverpool it was a second defeat in as many games and Neville believes the Reds lacked concentration and struggled to finish chances, despite having striker Luis Suarez return to the squad from a 10-game ban.
"Every time the ball came in the box for Liverpool, whether it was Kolo Toure, whether it was Jordan Henderson, whether it was Daniel Sturridge - they all looked like they couldn't sort their feet out. It all looked a bit awkward in the finishing and no one went out there and just finished it. Every time they had a chance they never got it away.
"It's a good result for United, the goal after half-time was important and there was a lack of concentration and focus from Liverpool. After that, Manchester United had something to hang on to, particularly at the end they grew into the game, Ryan Giggs and Phil Jones became difficult for Liverpool to play, but Liverpool wasted their chances."
Rotation
David Moyes made eight changes to the team that lost at the Etihad on Sunday including first starts of the season for Jonny Evans - who was named Man of the Match and goalscorer Javier Hernandez.
Former United defender Neville believes this squad rotation will now come into effect and benefit last year's Premier League champions.
"I think over the next couple of weeks with the next round of the Capital One Cup, the Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk and League games coming thick and fast, Moyes is going to have plenty of games to rotate his squad.
"Early on in the season when he had the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City - he wanted to play a consistent team to try and get through that difficult period.
"They've probably been a little bit below par with the results in the way in which they've gone, but now I think you'll see a lot more of the lads that played tonight intermingled with the team.
"I think you'll see them on Saturday, I don't think he'll go back to the Manchester City team, I think it will be a mixture of tonight's team and the team that played in the derby."
