This time of year’s a funny one. You can’t decide whether to wear your coat or not; it’s not hot but it’s not cold. The shops are already urging you to start your Christmas shopping early. And the transfer rumour mill starts to grind, warming up for the bitter cold bite of January.

Today Liverpool are linked with a January transfer window move for Ivorian international striker Lacina Traore from Russian cash-strapped Anzhi Makhachkala.

The 6ft 8inch (yep he’s taller than former Red Peter Crouch) striker has been told he can find a new club in January, if the price is right.

He has previously been described as the “new Drogba” due to his prowess in front of goal and Ivorian roots.

Liverpool may hope defender Kolo Toure, who became the club’s first ever Ivorian player this summer, could persuade 23-year-old Traore to switch to Merseyside.

According to the Metro, Traore’s agent Dmitry Selyuk has said, “If a good offer arrives that suits us then Lacina is free to leave in January.

“The demand for him is huge in Russia and especially in Europe.”

The paper also suggests Anzhi will be looking to let Traore go for a fraction of the £15million they paid for him in July 2012, when he signed from Kuban Krasnodar.

The Daily Mail reports:

Traore has scored 13 goals in his last 27 games for Anzhi – while Rodgers has previously admitted he wants to sign another centre forward as the club continue to push for European football.

Traore has also been linked with a move to Arsenal, who played against Liverpool in the Europa League last season.

It would be a strange signing for Liverpool to make, however, as Traore’s style of football is not something that would currently fit into the Reds’ system.

However, with Fabio Borini out on loan at Sunderland this season, Liverpool may well be looking to bring in a backup striker to Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge come January.

Meanwhile, the Daily Express say Liverpool are amongst a number of Premier League club monitoring the availability of Alexander Milosevic.

Milosevic’s contract at AIK expires next summer, but Fulham, Arsenal and Tottenham are all thought to be interested in the 21-year-old Swedish centre-back.

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson believes the Reds and Brendan Rodgers are reaping the benefits of putting their trust in Daniel Sturridge and allowing the striker to play every week.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 12, 2013: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge celebrates scoring the second goal of his hat-trick against Fulham with team-mate Jordan Henderson during the Premiership match at Craven Cottage. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sturridge had a stuttered start to his career at Manchester City and Chelsea, being sent out on loan and only occasionally getting a first team game, before he switched to Liverpool in January.

Since his arrival at Anfield, Sturridge has scored 19 goals in 25 games, including 8 already this season.

“Daniel’s always been a confident lad,” Henderson told the Liverpool Echo. “Even in the under-21s he was always wanting the ball the time, doing his skills and getting his shots away.

“But now he’s been given the opportunity to play as a striker every week in the Premier League and I think he has benefited from that.

“He’s come here and the manager has put great confidence and belief in him. And he’s shown what he can do and can give back.

“His form is outstanding and he’s improving all the time with his awareness, his touch and his finishing. He’s got the lot really.”

Liverpool players now go for international duty, with England facing two crucial World Cup qualifying games at home to Montenegro and Poland.

England boss Roy Hodgson will see Sturridge as a key ingredient in the team’s success.

Henderson added, “I think he can be brilliant for England. There’s obviously two big games coming up and he can contribute a lot in those two games. He’s been sharp and getting goals. I think he’ll play a big part.”

For the first time in many years Liverpool have a side full of quick, unpredictable attacking players, writes Henry Jackson.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 5, 2013: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge celebrates scoring the second goal against Crystal Palace during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Scoring goals at will, creating chances in abundance and terrorising defences week in, week out. This has been an aspect lacking in any side at Anfield since Roy Evan’s reign in the mid 1990s.

While the Reds have produced a number of very fine sides since the days of Robbie Fowler, Stan Collymore and Steve McManaman, more often than not they have been well-drilled teams rather than exciting attacking units. There have not been many players who have had the ability to run at defenders and beat them with either blistering speed or quick feet.

Gerard Houllier’s treble-winning side in 2000/01 was an extremely solid team built on an outstanding defence. In attacking areas, however, barring Michael Owen, the side lacked pace and dynamism. The midfield was very narrow, with Houllier quite often opting for a midfield quartet of Didi Hamann, Steven Gerrard, Gary McAlliser and Danny Murphy, with wide men like Patrik Berger and Vladimir Smicer often playing bit part roles. All four central players were terrific during that season, but the side lacked an edge out wide which made them fall short in the title race. They had no explosive player (other than Owen) capable of producing something magical against a stubborn defence in a tight game.

In fairness, Houllier did try and eradicate this problem by signing the likes of Harry Kewell, Bruno Cheyrou and El Hajdi Diouf, but could never get the attacking balance right.

Fast forward a few years, and Liverpool had become one of Europe’s most respected sides under Rafa Benitez. They won the Champions League, reached the final two years later and made the semi-finals the year after that. Again, for all the tactical discipline and efficiency of this side, where was the pace and trickery in the team?

Gerrard was at his absolute peak during this period, while Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso were wonderful additions too, but there was still that added spark missing in the side. Out wide, the likes of Dirk Kuyt and Yossi Benayoun were the preferred option, while Albert Riera was solid at best. This is not to say these players were poor by any means- Kuyt, in particular, was a great servant to the club- but Liverpool lacked that extra bit of craft that they required to take them to the next level. Ryan Babel had the ability to add another dimension to the side, but he never came close to realising his potential.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, August 3, 2013: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia in action against Olympiakos CFP during a preseason friendly match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Between Benitez’s departure in 2009 and January this year, the same issue had remained. Stewart Downing arrived as a player who would give Liverpool the pace and directness they had lacked out wide since McManaman, but the Englishman was a huge disappointment in his time at the club. Although he was a decent crosser of the ball, he never once showed any real flair and originality to his game. Maxi Rodriguez chipped in with important goals and had undeniable quality, but again he was not the solution. The less said about Joe Cole the better.

This time last year Liverpool still looked lacking in the final third, and Rodgers’ decision to sign Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window has made a monumental difference to the look of the side.

We are now seven games into the 2013/14 Premier League season and the Reds lie joint top of the table alongside Arsenal. Only Arsene Wenger’s side have scored more goals so far, while nobody has found the net more times than the Reds in 2013. Rodgers has made a number of very shrewd acquisitions, and is creating a very exciting forward line. There are now five or six players in the squad who are blessed with terrific skill and pace, both on the flanks and in central areas.

The partnership of Luis Suarez and Sturridge up front is an absolute joy to watch to watch at present, and there can be no denying that they are the most talented, dynamic forward pairing in the Premier League on current form. They can beat players with ease, have great footballing brains and are creating and scoring goals for fun.

Coutinho is a magnificent young talent who has been a revelation in his nine months at the club so far. The little Brazilian has genius in his passing and, similar to players like Paul Gascoigne, Zinedine Zidane and Andres Iniesta, he is deceptively quick when he runs with the ball at his feet. The thought of him, Suarez and Sturridge playing in the same side when he returns from injury is mouth-watering, especially in the current 3-4-1-2 system.

SWANSEA, WALES - Monday, September 16, 2013: Liverpool's Victor Moses celebrates scoring the second goal against Swansea City, on his debut, with manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premiership match at the Liberty Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Victor Moses is another who has been excellent since his loan move from Chelsea this summer. He may frustrate at times, but he has the ability to unlock a defence in tight areas; as mentioned previously, a major downfall of Liverpool sides down the years. Raheem Sterling and Jordan Ibe are both still very young and raw, but they too carry these attributes. Sterling is not in the best of form at present and certainly needs to improve physically, but he and 17-year-old Ibe remain very exciting prospects.

Anybody who has watched Liverpool over the last 20 years will know that, on the whole, pace and skill in attacking areas has been the missing ingredient in almost all of their sides. They have always had very reliable defences- from Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz to Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger- and midfield class- from McAllister and Hamann, to Gerrard and Alonso, as well as an ability to stifle the opposition.

There are signs, however, that Liverpool are now becoming one of the most entertaining, fluent attacking teams in the Premier League, led by the brilliance of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.

Long may it continue.

Pace and trickery the missing ingredient for Liverpool – until now

The Liverpool Encyclopedia, produced by the lads from the impressive LFC History website was published last week and we genuinely cannot rate it highly enough, a stunning book.

lfc_encyclopedia

Huge credit to the authors Arnie Baldursson and Gudmundur Magnusson, and publishers deCoubertin books for what is a beautifully produced item.

I genuinely don’t think I have ever seen such a wonderfully presented book – not just football book, any book. This is the highest quality of production and credit should go to all involved, including the publishers, writers and designers.

The contents are incredibly well laid out, researched and written. For a any Liverpool supporter this is the perfect place to find all the stories, information and history of not just the players but everything involved with Liverpool FC.

Attention to detail is an often used phrase but this has the lot – 650 full colour pages, 420,000 words, 1,100 images.

More than just a book on Liverpool players, or matches, the authors add depth to the story and history of the club with features on fanzines, songs, former coaches, specific competitions like the World Club Cup and plenty more.

It’s a cliche to say a book is a must-read or must-have for a Liverpool supporter, but this genuinely is. Fair enough, you can cope without a players’ biography or a book just full of results, but this is an in-depth A-Z of Liverpool FC, nothing is missed out.

You can purchase the Liverpool Encyclopedia from Amazon here .

Harry Redknapp claims Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would have been his assistant had he been given the England manager’s job in 2012.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Queens Park Rangers' manager Harry Redknapp during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Redknapp, who is now at QPR, was in the running for the England manager’s job alongside Roy Hodgson – with the latter being given the nod.

In his new book, Redknapp explains how he wanted Rodgers – who was Swansea manager at the time to be his number 2. In a serialisation run by The Daily Mail, Redknapp explains:

He had players at Swansea passing it like Franz Beckenbauer. You know how his teams are going to play before you kick off. They are going to pass, they are going to take risks; but England do not have that identity.

Look at Brendan at Liverpool now — he still knows how he wants to play. He got rid of Andy Carroll because he wasn’t in that plan. That is how Spain operate: this is how we play and we don’t compromise.

My thinking on Brendan was this: if he can do it with players from the lower leagues at Swansea what can he do with Rio and Terry or Rooney and Gerrard?

So when Tottenham played Swansea on April 1, 2012 I pulled Brendan after the game and said that if all the speculation about me and England was true would he consider coming to the European Championships in the summer as my part-time coach?

I told him I wanted England to play with as much technical ambition as Swansea. He was up for it.

Redknapp, who was Tottenham manager at the time, claims he received a text message from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, among others, saying he would love him to manage England.

Redknapp certainly gets one thing right, commenting on The FA, saying that “English football being run by people who really haven’t got a clue”.

@Support_Believe discusses Brendan Rodgers‘ use of the new 3-4-1-2 formation of late and the long-term plan of the boss.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, August 24, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premiership match against Aston Villa at Villa Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 3-4-1-2 formation was, for some, a tactic that was new and unknown up until the League Cup tie at Old Trafford last month. Shortly after kickoff the realisation of a new line up was in front of us. Sky Sports had confidently set out the team as 4-4-2 with Suarez’s return they knew he had to be levered back in but where?

4-4-2 was the obvious solution to their problems, so confident that they plastered it up on the screen at every given opportunity. If nothing more, it proved, to some, the laissez faire attitude within the media. It also proved one really big point – they are guessing! Not only are they guessing but also they are lazy with it, and the sad thing in all of that is? Joe public hangs on their every word likes it means something!

Meanwhile back in the changing room Brendan continued with instruction after instruction, a reminder of drill after drill, remember, remember, remember, if this happens, that has to happen, if he goes there, you drop in there, and you move over there, are we all clear? ARE WE ALL CLEAR? Yes Boss! The troops go on their way to carry out the duties as assigned, some fearing the consequences of failure already.

Of course, instruction is one thing, drills and repetition are another but, human error or brilliance, loses or wins the day, always has always will. Why did Jose leave his man? Was Gerrard culpable in any way? Was the system to blame? The questions and many more follow the day after. The system was new granted, worked on in parts during the end of last season, refined and studied over the break. Has Brendan got a ‘redprint’ for the future? Damn right he has and it will be a system copied throughout football over time.

Brendan looks from the outside to be tinkering with ‘systems’ and its fair to say he is to an extent but the criticism following his Southampton selection of 4 centre-backs wasn’t really fair, why?

Because it was something forced upon him at the time, and he, like the new manager at a really big club, with seasoned pros who are popular with the fans, conceded! He conceded long after team selection and into the next day, 3 hours before kick off in fact. Why? Because a player pleaded with him to be selected, begged him you could say. Brendan feels for this guy, he knows, if this new guy comes in he could finish him and he’ll never get back in the team again. So Brendan bows to pressure and it bites him on the arse, a valuable lesson learnt that will never be repeated.

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND - Sunday, September 29, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and assistant manager Colin Pascoe on the bench before the Premiership match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

So lets look at the system…

Any F1 fan will tell you that team tactics are the cornerstone of their sport. I wont bang on about it too much so don’t stop reading just yet. Tactics are analysed on a second by second basis. The top 3 in a recent GP finished so close to each other that by the time you have read this sentence they had all crossed the line and the prizes decided. Was 1st place won by chance? Tactics won the day and they nearly always will in that sport.

The monitoring of which tactic to use or change to is, as I said earlier, monitored on a second by second basis and relayed to the drivers accordingly to tweak from their £100,000 steering wheel. A click here and a switch there and the race mode is transformed completely. The individual car set up and tactic are relevant to the race conditions. Conditions change? They have a plan for that, in fact, they have a plan for everything!! Does it always work? No, but through refining of the tactics a better result is secured next time.

So where does this fit into football? more specifically, for us anyway, Liverpool FC.

3-4-1-2 is arguably the most interesting tactic of Brendan’s reign so far. I’d go as far as to say, it’s the most interesting tactic currently used in football. Why? Because it has flexibility like no other. Lets start with my preferred team selection this year, assuming everyone was fit.

formation

In anyone book, that’s a strong team. A nice balance. enough attack-minded players to win you most games, enough defenders to snuff out any dangers. It can quite literally become several different formations at any given moment; very defensive, defensive, balanced, counter, attack, very attacking. What other formation gives you that scope?

If you are anything like me you will look at that image and say, we can beat anyone in the Premier League with that team, but it is vital to know how the opposition are intending to play against you in order for you to counteract their system. Not everyone gets team news and formations early enough to do anything about it. So what’s the next best thing? A formation that can morph into another, then another and another if needed? A team and personnel who know the role required of them in that change? Wouldn’t that be nice! Well that’s what we are starting to see. It’s in its infancy granted but it will become part of the fabric and when it does, watch out!

Of course, personnel are massive, and we didn’t just come across the players we have now by chance. You can point to the odd exception that isn’t working right now but you have to understand, this is new to nearly all if them. A plan is in place for every single player, be that weight gain, muscle gain, sharpness, whatever, point is there is a plan. Ask yourself, when did you last feel that our manager had ‘a plan’?

Ok OK! We all know it was Rafa, and boy did he have a plan! Shame the owners at the time didn’t buy into it, but that’s another story. Look at the other managers, sorry but King Kenny is in here to. They didn’t have a plan other than, defend via the Owl or Kenny’s attack philosophy, neither work in the modern game, they are just too simplistic.

The game has come a long was since my first game standing on the Annie Road in ’76 when the only conversation before the game was will we win or not. Now we discuss fitness, tactics, positional sense and the likes. I remember playing a game of Madden NFL 20 years ago and seeing the various tactics and thinking, what? What are these things saying to me? So I would pick something random and hope it paid off, it never did! American sports showed us the way all those years ago, this is why FSG understand Rodgers.

Rodgers has always understood tactics and the magnitude of them, that players need 2/3 positions that they are comfortable in, the need for a system they know and know well, its not your average Premier League system, its unique and the ‘redprint’ to return Liverpool, one day, back to greatness.

Remember when a certain Bill Shankly walked into Melwood? He changed everything; it took time because it all had to change, training, eating, sleeping, the lot!

See any similarities?
