James Milner: Set to leave City on a free transfer

James Milner: Set to leave City on a free transfer

James Milner's exit this summer would be a blow to Manchester City but his energy and versatility could transform Liverpool, according to Adam Bate.

"Find me a more complete English player. There are players who're better technically, yes. Quicker players, yes. Players who head better, yes. But show me one who does all the things Milner does well. There isn't one."

Manuel Pellegrini's assessment of James Milner's unique abilities, articulated in an interview with The Guardian last month, will be shared by many Manchester City supporters who've admired his efforts for the club over the past five years. But the praise comes with a sense of foreboding too. City are in need of an overhaul but few would want that to include their hard-working midfielder.

"He has an energy and athleticism which the Manchester City squad as a whole lacks," Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports earlier this month. "If he goes, they'll be losing quite a lot of things he brings to the team. He's versatile, English and his running power, which is something that you would have to level at City - they lack that pace, certainly in midfield areas - it would be a big loss."

Not that Milner's contribution has been restricted to the midfield. He has operated at right-back for England, been used on both flanks, in the centre and was even a makeshift striker recently - taking on the role with typical gusto. "I played him as a forward and the team averaged three goals a game," said Pellegrini. "He creates a lot of movement and space for the rest of his teammates."

But it's his most frequent position - among the City substitutes - that's the real stumbling block to keeping Milner at the Etihad. Pellegrini admits it's a difficult situation. "He's one of those players that when you leave him out you're left with this feeling of injustice. It hurts because he should always play but sometimes you need a technical player with other characteristics."

There can be a tendency at the top of the game to focus on what a player can't do rather than put the emphasis on what he can do. But with Milner in the final year of his contract, that situation soon shifts. Those who'd once have derided a 'functional' player, now prefer to consider what Pellegrini calls those "polyfunctional" qualities.

Attractive option

Liverpool are among those clubs strongly linked with a move for Milner and the player's tactical flexibility is likely to be attractive to Brendan Rodgers. The Reds boss recently described Emre Can as "multi-functional" and used the lack of such players as an explanation for the team's defeat at West Ham earlier this season when they were unable to make the diamond formation work.

Milner would appear ideally suited to the left-side of a diamond, mirroring the work of Jordan Henderson alongside him. Importantly, the 29-year-old is a versatile enough to be equally effective in a number of positions so Rodgers would not need to be wedded to any one system. Whatever the manager's plan, he could count on rather more energy than Liverpool have shown this season.

Milner has only played the full 90 minutes for City nine times in the Premier League this season and despite operating in a variety of different position, he has covered more ground than any team-mate in every one of those matches. In fact, he's run farther than anyone among the opposition in the last seven of them and made more sprints than anyone else on the pitch in the last eight.

That record includes the 3-1 win over West Brom on Boxing Day, the sort of Christmas period fixture in which others might flag. Instead, Milner made 111 high-intensity sprints playing as a striker - more than anyone has managed in any Premier League game this season. More importantly, City have been unbeaten in every one of those games. Milner makes a difference.

The question now is which team Milner will be making the difference for next season. What he can bring to Liverpool is obvious. How Man City will cope with his exit is rather less clear. After all, is there another player out there who does all the things Milner does well? As Pellegrini and many others already know: There isn't one.

Are You Respect Enough ? Contoh, saya orang Sarawak, datang stadium serang penyokong negeri lain. Saya dah konpem bukan respect entity sebab serang orang. Now, pada anda yg tak puas hati terus generalized konklusi menyatakan, orang Sarawak pembunuh ! (Dengan izin). Macamana komuniti SARAWAK yg lain. Ramai mereka pun mengutuk tindakan saya yg serang orang walaupun sama negeri. So terapkan budaya respect dan beautiful football. Kalau semua sokong satu team mana meriah lepak mamak kan. Saya layan troll tapi saya tak suka troll melampau sebab saya sayangkan hubungan saya dengan rakan yg sama minat bola dengan saya. Kelompok brung hantu yg berjaga.

Kenapa Philippe Coutinho berhak tersenarai dalam PFA’s team of the year?

Liverpool patut melengkapkan perpindahan Steven Jovetic yg dianggarkan bernilai £16m

Neil Poole provides his We Are Liverpool fanzine editorial, as he addresses where this season (and last summer) has gone wrong.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premier League match against Everton at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

This time last season in issue one of We Are Liverpool I predicted we would win the league and did so with the brash gusto of a thirty-five year old man-child. Having learnt the error of my ways and now as a weary and wise thirty-six year old curmudgeon, I can confidently predict we will not win the league this year. Neither will we finish fourth. After that I’m not too arsed about predictions.

This season has been a failure.

My genuine belief is it didn’t have to be like this, and much of what has passed this season could have been avoided. We had one problem to contend with last summer and that was the departure of Luis Suarez. A major loss I grant you, but nonetheless – one problem.

And one which was mitigated by a shedload of cash, the belief and momentum of a near league title and a buoyant fan base. Somehow though, it’s ended up with us having to watch two thirds of the season in which the team has had as many different manifestations as Doctor f*cking Who. How on earth did it come to essentially watching a thumbless Brendan Rodgers desperately fumbling in the dark trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube? Any dickhead with half a brain knows the way to solve a Rubik’s Cube is to just take the stickers off and put all the same colours on each side. This season shouldn’t have been a puzzle that needed to be worked out.

When Rodgers figured out the 3-4-2-1 (3-4-3) formation at the back end of last the year it led to a great run that got us back into contention for a Champions League place that I personally thought had already been lost. Now, I’m no tactical expert but apparently the 3-4-2-1 is a bit of a mad formation that not many people use. Rodgers was rightly praised. But while he was being applauded for what seemingly amounted to constructing the engineering marvel of a Lego bridge over the Mersey, we should have actually been asking, ‘Why didn’t someone just give him steel and concrete?’

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers looks dejected as his side lose 1-0 at home to Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Player recruitment continues to scupper this club. Who is really in charge of it? Because that is where the problem lies.

And this, for me, is where the real frustration comes into play. By not knowing who recruited last summer’s players it’s hard to hold any confidence in any particular view-point. I’m entirely undecided on Rodgers; a Brendan Agnostic if you will. However, if it was Rodgers’ decisions which led to the failure to replace Suarez, the failure to effectively plan for the likelihood that Sturridge would spend at least part of the season injured, and the manifestation of a situation in which the three other strikers were treated like lepers, then he needs to go. If it was Ian Ayre, them him. If it was this Committee, then them, and so on. Someone, somewhere needs to get a grip.

Of last summer’s signings only one has been a success based on the evidence of this season alone. That has been Emre Can, who was a fundamental solution to stopping the defensive rot back in November and who, despite a few shaky games recently, you can confidently say will be a very good player for Liverpool for years to come.

There are of course players who have potential and who haven’t been helped by being played out of position. Many hold faith that Markovic will still come good. They may well be right and it’s hard to argue that playing him at wing back and then hauling him off all the time isn’t ruining the player.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 4, 2015: Liverpool's Joe Allen, Lazar Markovic, Lucas Leiva and captain Jordan Henderson look dejected as Arsenal score the third goal before half-time during the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

However, going entirely on what I’ve seen of him in a Liverpool shirt this year, I’ve only spotted brief glimpses of potential. You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not yet convinced by a fella whose highlights reel amounts to poking someone in the eye, scoring against Bournemouth and almost scoring a world class goal. I’m not throwing him under a bus yet though. Like all the new lads I’ll give him another season.

Alberto Moreno may be great one day. Then again he may be shit. He worries me to be honest, because essentially, when at the game, I cast my eye to his position and he’s never f*cking there. That lad is so nomadic I half expect him to see wandering the sand dunes at Ainsdale Beach with a camel and Berber tent.

The season’s whipping boy has been Lovren. He looked sound against Borussia Dortmund in the pre-season friendly. However, little did we know this was a Dortmund team whose players would spend most of this season pleading forgiveness through wire mesh from their fans like some husband who’s stashed a kilo of cocaine in his innocent wife’s bag as she’s yanked off to a far flung foreign prison. Against West Brom he gave one of his most assured displays yet. Yeah. Well done. Made up…

Lallana remains weighed down by a monumental price tag due the coincidental occurrence that he was born on a particular rock in the North Sea. His high water mark was the home game against Swansea around Christmas time when he was immense, but he simply hasn’t shown this form enough. And if, like me, most of your Lallana considerations come in the form of continued amazement at how pasty he looks and that he may need a blood transfusion, it’s safe to say he needs to up his game. Again, maybe next year. I haven’t given up hope yet.

Balotelli hasn’t worked. Lambert hasn’t worked. Manquillo literally hasn’t worked since the end of 2014.

Spreading the £100 million or so over this group of players has not paid dividends. Maybe it wasn’t designed to. Maybe we did write this season off and it was all about the long term game. If that was the plan, and I hope to God it wasn’t, we got it desperately wrong.

We had a real chance to go and challenge for the title again this year but seemingly we convinced ourselves last season was some fluke. No amount of stats or rational argument will sway me from this! Get into the habit of continually making excuses and playing down expectations and the next thing you know, the only way you get your kicks is by creating a diverse range of car stickers telling yourself you’re born and not manufactured.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 18, 2014: Liverpool's owner John W. Henry, wife Linda Pizzuti and co-owner and NESV Chairman Tom Werner before the Premiership match against Aston Villa at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Whilst I don’t believe FSG are spending every waking hour working out how to make Liverpool Football Club the best in the world (which surely has to be the aim), neither do I think they are entirely void of commitment or trying to purposely undermine the club.

The key issue remains they know nothing about football. And if you put yourselves in their shoes and imagine knowing literally nothing, how do you even choose your advisors to advise on what structure to adopt, which CEO to have, which manager to appoint?

It’s a total shot in the dark which could end up with you basing three years of progress on a chat in a lift with Howard Wilkinson. Until there is someone appointed at the top level who knows something about football then I don’t see this problem being resolved and sacking Brendan Rodgers simply opens the door for a managerial lottery. If we can genuinely upgrade on Brendan then I’m happy to go with it, However, if not I’m also happy to give him another year and he has my full support.

With pressure increasing on Brendan Rodgers as the Reds’ poor form continues, Ben Twelves takes a look at what the Liverpool owners could do with their chosen man.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers looks dejected against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Brendan Rodgers finds his future in the Anfield hot-seat coming under the most scrutiny he’s endured during his three-season tenure.

The campaign has been a huge disappointment and appalling recent displays – lacking motivation, any tactical nous, resembling everything but a Liverpool side – have plunged the Northern Irishman’s position to new depths and under genuine threat.

Rodgers is now at the mercy of the clubs ruthless owners, Fenway Sports Group, with only four meaningless Premier League games left and the severity of the situation reaching boiling point.

So what are the owners do with Rodgers?

The Sack

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 18, 2014: Liverpool's owner John W. Henry and wife Linda Pizzuti before the Premiership match against Aston Villa at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

We are now at the stage where parting company is a genuine and possible outcome for the Liverpool manager, who has done himself very few favours recently.

Performances have been largely poor all season, and results – bar the creditable 13 game upturn from January to mid-March – have been equally as bad for the most part too. But the spineless displays over the last seven games including an abject Wembley FA Cup semi-final showing has really made cause for concern.

While displays and score-lines are one thing, it’s the repeating of the same errors game after game, with the same outcome arising and refusing to acknowledge it, alongside continually puzzling post-match comments that has made it increasingly difficult to defend the under fire boss.

Injuries have unquestionably played a big part this season, but the ridiculous selection of numerous players out of position over specialist options, as well as picking those not good enough to be on the bench let alone starting XI has proved a huge contributing factor to a damaging campaign that has seen numerous comments come back to haunt Rodgers.

The Liverpool leader has been his own worst enemy at times.

Even though performances have continually been below-par and dropped again to an alarming level in the last few weeks, little has changed as Rodgers bizarrely persists and labels performances “outstanding.”

There has been a worrying lack of endeavour to make simple alterations – Mario Balotelli still plays as a lone striker, Glen Johnson still starts games despite being on his way out this summer while Javi Manquillo still gathers splinters sat on the bench.

Along with the lack of realisation and addressing of self-inflicted problems, the desperate performances and almost insulting post-match comments, Rodgers is giving the American owners little reason to believe that he is still the right man to lead the club.

The manager has his well-documented philosophy and style to the way he desires to operate and that isn’t an issue. The way he has failed to acknowledge that certain parts of it are failing certainly is though.

It’s this reluctance to accept that he is making mistakes that could well result in the loss of his job at the end of the season, with the 42-year-old having now given FSG every reason to pull the trigger for the third time during their time ownership.

Backing Brendan & Addressing Structural and Transfer Issues

While this campaign has been a monumental struggle, last season showed that Liverpool do have a talented manager at the helm. Though a lot hasn’t worked according to plan, the long-term vision and way of work Rodgers upholds in keeping with the clubs hierarchy could keep him in the job.

It must not be forgotten too, that Rodgers was the man to make us dream again, and he showed that with the right quality of player at his disposal and tools to succeed, he can do just that – with his small group taking a memorable title challenge to the last with the best football Anfield had witnessed for many years.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, January 25, 2012: Liverpool's owner John W. Henry and wife Linda Pizzuti during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg against Manchester City at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The disappointing downturn that has followed since that title charge has left another rebuilding job to do but it remains to be seen if those in power decide to undertake the procedure with or without Rodgers. If he is handed the chance to go again, the club must work to address some ongoing issues.

The unclear recruitment strategy – especially at the top end of the market – has ultimately been the crux behind a damaging season, as the club failed to attract the proven quality needed to take another step forward after last year’s giant leap despite boasting Champions League football, a lure Liverpool won’t have this time around.

Signing potential – some that have already proven they are exciting prospects – is essential in keeping with the long-term success plan, but alongside the young talents, the club must improve in their pursuits of attracting proven talent to Anfield to ease the immediate burden on adapting youngsters. Failure to do is catastrophic as proven this season.

Rodgers resented the idea of working with a Director of Football on arrival at Anfield to retain full control, but after three free-reign years that has boasted a worrying number of failed signings and progression grinding to a halt, the need for structural adjustment has become clear.

It may not be the system in which Rodgers wants to operate under, but with how the current approach failed so miserably in the summer, he may have to accept it if he wants to prolong his days as Liverpool manager.

The Final Four

There is only four games left of a truly forgettable campaign to play, but they could still yet be some of the most important in Rodgers’ time at Anfield.

The fixtures will have no bearing on a disappointing season overall, but they represent the chance for Rodgers to show once more that he can see problems, he can address them as he did earlier in the campaign, and show signs that he is still the right man to take Liverpool Football Club forward.

If he responds positively ahead of summer showdown talks with FSG, Rodgers may well be handed the chance to take the club forward again. If he doesn’t, it could be game over for him before talks of moving forward have even begun.

The Sack
