Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says managing Liverpool would have been his dream club.

The 68-year-old was asked by host Claire Balding if he could have managed any club. “I’d have liked to have managed Liverpool,” said Redknapp.

“It’s a fantastic atmosphere, when that crowd before the game, when they sing, and the atmosphere, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

“I just think it’s an incredible place and a great football club.”

Organisers of the Liverpool fans' boycott of the match at Hull are delighted with the response after up to 1,500 supporters voted with their feet.

KINGSTON-UPON-HULL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, April 28, 2015: Empty seats as Liverpool supporters boycott the game to protest at high ticket prices during the Premier League match against Hull City at the KC Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Large sections of the away end were empty at the KC Stadium as the Reds lost 1-0 to see their hopes of Champions League football fade away.

Many supporters had purchased B£10 child tickets and not travelled in protest at the B£48 adult ticket price, instead joining demonstrations outside Anfield and the Premier League's London headquarters.

"We think it was a big success," Spirit of Shankly chairman Jay McKenna told Press Association Sport.

"When we said to people 12 days ago we would be taking this stance ourselves and spoke to half a dozen coach operators from Liverpool who said they would do the same, we were anticipating a quarter of the away end not attending.

"But I think from what we saw last night it was definitely over half and we've had people saying stewards at Hull told them there were 1,500 empty seats, which just shows the anger about high prices in general but particularly the situation at Hull where we were charged three times what Stoke were.

"There were supporters at our protest at Anfield last night who weren't in the away end for the first time in almost 20 years.

"We've never had people actively staying away from matches in protest like we did last night, not even in the very dark days of (former owners) Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

"That shows the level of anger from supporters who had to make a very difficult choice last night.

"One of the most striking things was looking at people who you knew would normally be in the away end hundreds of miles away from the ground.

"It shows how supporters feel. There was a lot of anger and passion from people not only saying 'This is wrong' but talking about what to do next."

McKenna said future boycotts were a possibility but they, along with other fans' groups, wanted to pursue more dialogue with clubs and the Premier League.

"We will discuss whether there will be more action in grounds as boycotting a match isn't an easy thing to do and we won't be doing it week in, week out," he added.

"We will talk to other supporters' groups, asking them to take similar action, and sit down and talk with sponsors of clubs and the Premier League to tell them the relationship is broken.

"I don't think they want to be seeing scenes like last night: a half-empty stadium devoid of passion.

"We also want to sit down with the likes of Sky, BT and Barclays and say 'What are you going to do about this?'

"If supporters are priced out then this product they like to market just won't be as financially attractive."

FROM SECOND TO NOTHING !!! SEJARAH BERULANG KEMBALI ....

Musim 2001/2002 - Tempat ke-2 liga (80 mata)
Musim 2002/2003 - Tempat ke-5 liga (64 mata)

Musim 2008/2009 - Tempat ke-2 liga (86 mata)
Musim 2009/2010 - Tempat ke-7 liga (68 mata)

Musim 2013/2014 - Tempat ke-2 liga (84 mata)
Musim 2014/2015 - Tempat ke-5 liga (58 mata)(Baki 4 game lagi)

YNWA

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson admits the club’s slim chances of securing a Champions League berth next season are now over.

Liverpool lost 1-0 at relegation-threatened Hull on Tuesday night to leave them seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

With just four games of the Premier League season left to play, Thompson concedes they will not be featuring in Europe’s top competition next season - and says they are paying for some of their dealings in the transfer market.

“Liverpool had to win all of their games between now and the end of the season to have a realistic chance (of securing a Champions League place),” he told The Morning View onSky Sports News HQ.

“Yes, the door was slightly ajar, the light, as Louis van Gaal had said, had been switched on for Liverpool, but we had to take advantage of that.

“We had to beat Hull at a place that had been a graveyard for us last season, our worst performance when we got beaten 3-1, and this wasn’t much better.

“Hull were nervous. This was a game we had to start quickly and brightly but we never got started. It was the same against West Brom at the weekend.”

Thompson admits Brendan Rodgers has failed to replace Luis Suarez after he left to join Barcelona last summer but feels the Uruguayan should never have been allowed to leave Anfield without a top-class striker to take his place.

“Suarez is a big-game player who demands things from other players,” added Thompson. “Why was Daniel Sturridge so good last year? Because Suarez demanded it, Raheem Sterling the same.

“They have been shorn of that. I said at the time Mario Balotelli was worth the risk but as the season has gone on, it hasn’t worked and that has to be changed.

“Rickie Lambert doesn’t seem to have done it, you’ve got Fabio Borini who has been in there. We actually bought a player, Divock Origi, then loaned him back to the club in France.

“Now we are ending up playing with Sterling (up front). Where’s the logic in that?”

Instead, Thompson would have worked hard to ensure Liverpool beat Arsenal to the signing of Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez, otherwise he would have vetoed Suarez’s move in the opposite direction.

“The talk was that Liverpool had made a big bid for Sanchez. I wouldn’t have let Suarez get in the taxi to the airport if Sanchez hadn’t have already done the deal,” he said.

“Liverpool were in the driving seat on this. They could have said to Suarez, ‘sorry, as much as you want it to go and it’s Barcelona, you are not going anywhere until he signs.’

“I know there were family issues and that’s why he went to London but I wouldn’t have let it (the Suarez transfer) happen.”

Brendan Rodgers is coming under increasing pressure as Liverpool manager following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City on Tuesday, and a past quote has once again made him look foolish.

KINGSTON-UPON-HULL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, April 28, 2015: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers shouts orders from the touchline against Hull City during the Premier League match at the KC Stadium. (Pic by Gareth Jones/Propaganda)

Trace your mind back to the middle of the March, when Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Swansea put them within four points of second place in the Premier League. That may feel like a lifetime ago, but it really has only been six weeks.

In his post-match interview, Rodgers declared that his side could finish closest to champions-in-waiting Chelsea come the end of May.

“Manchester City’s result at the weekend (a 1-0 defeat to Burnley) gives us an opportunity to finish second,” he said.

“Our mentality, the run and confidence we have at the moment we’re just going to take that into every game and see where it takes us.”

Rodgers claimed last week that he doesn’t get carried away when we win. This proclamation of targeting second shows otherwise.

Downward spiral

Unfortunately for Rodgers, those words have come back to haunt him, with the Reds’ season capitulating in embarrassing style ever since that scrappy 1-0 win at the Liberty Stadium.

First up was the visit of Man United at Anfield; a game that many felt was pivotal in the race for a top-four finish, and one that Liverpool were favourites to win.

Both Rodgers and the players froze on the big occasion though, showing not for the first time that his young squad remain mentally weak when it comes to the crunch matches.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 4, 2015: Liverpool's Joe Allen, Lazar Markovic, Lucas Leiva and captain Jordan Henderson look dejected as Arsenal score the third goal before half-time during the Premier League match at the Emirates Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 4-1 humiliation at Arsenal then followed, with Liverpool 3-0 down at half-time and fortunate to only lose by a three-goal margin in the end. Spineless doesn’t do it justice.

A gritty 1-0 win at Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup – hardly something to get too giddy about – and a 2-0 victory over a gutless Newcastle team gave brief hope, before Aston Villa awaited in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

The performance that day was arguably the most disappointing of the whole season, given the game’s significance, and Rodgers had a shocking day at the office.

The defeats to United and Arsenal were massively disappointing but not huge shocks, whereas the loss to Tim Sherwood’s side really did feel inexcusable. From that point on, Liverpool’s season has gone as flat as a pancake.

The 0-0 draw with West Brom on Saturday was a game that felt tough to stay awake watching, while Tuesday’s miserable defeat to Hull was the final nail in the Reds’ 2014/15 coffin.

Embarrassing Rodgers

BLACKBURN, ENGLAND - Wednesday, April 8, 2015: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers against Blackburn Rovers during the FA Cup 6th Round Quarter-Final Replay match at Ewood Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

This horrible run of form has not only put Rodgers’ job in real danger, but it has also further damaged his reputation as a man who loves the sound of his own voice.

The 42-year-old has been derided by many rival supporters for his David Brent-esque style in interviews, ever since the toe-curling documentary ‘Being Liverpool‘ was released in 2012.

Although for a time it all just seemed like rather exaggerated, perhaps even jealous, mickey-taking, Rodgers is now becoming more and more cringe-worthy by the week.

As we perfectly pointed out last week, “the hyperbole that he (Rodgers) delivers on a weekly basis is helping nobody, not himself and certainly not the young players he overly lavishes praise upon.”

Rodgers is a very talented young manager, regardless of what many will tell you right now, but his constant use of the word “outstanding”, among other trademark weekly phrases, is turning him into something of a joke figure.

You can’t help but feel that if the Northern Irishman just combined the obvious talent he has with a more restrained ego, he would be receiving far less criticism. He is making a giant rod for his own back.

At the moment, Rodgers has the feel of a stereotypical embarrassing dad about him. You find yourself listening to him in fear of what will be said next, while rival fans laugh their heads off.

Does he stay or does he go?

So much is being said about the future of Rodgers, with a growing number calling for him to be sacked as Liverpool manager at the end of the season.

I, personally, remain a fan of his in general, and still feel he deserves another season. The Hull performance certainly came very close to swaying my opinion, however.

Despite my fondness towards him as a young coach with bags of potential, Rodgers could not complain if he was sent packing by FSG before the start of next season.

It has been a very poor campaign on the whole, with poor signings, unacceptable Champions League performances, big-game meltdowns and baffling tactical errors all playing their part.

It’s worth stressing that it hasn’t all been bad, however, and Rodgers does have some genuine excuses to make for Liverpool’s failings.

The departure of Luis Suarez was always going to hit the team hard, given the fact he is the finest striker on the planet right now, while Daniel Sturridge‘s injury woes have also been hugely damaging.

Adam Lallana has never been fully fit at any point, while young signings like Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can were always going to take time to settle.

The 13-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, after Rodgers decided to adopt a 3-4-2-1 formation, was an inspired piece of management, and outlined the ability he does have at his disposal.

There have clearly been more bad moments than good though, and that is why his position is so uncertain right now.

If Rodgers does stay in the Anfield hot-seat beyond the summer, he will know that 2015/16 is very much make or break for him.

Keeping his inflated ego in check and not making overly bold predictions will go some way to winning over his ever-growing number of critics.

‘We can finish second’ – Brendan Rodgers’ words come back to haunt him again

Unknown   at  18:55  No comments

Brendan Rodgers is coming under increasing pressure as Liverpool manager following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City on Tuesday, and a past quote has once again made him look foolish.

This horrible run of form has not only put Rodgers’ job in real danger, but it has also further damaged his reputation as a man who loves the sound of his own voice.

The 42-year-old has been derided by many rival supporters for his David Brent-esque style in interviews, ever since the toe-curling documentary ‘Being Liverpool‘ was released in 2012.

Brendan Rodgers has ordered his ailing Liverpool team to toughen up if they are to mount a serious challenge for a return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

The Reds saw their slim top-four hopes all but extinguished in Tuesday night’s defeat at Hull as a testing campaign looks set to finish with little more than a whimper.

While manager Rodgers believes his side’s mid-season rally has cost them in recent weeks he will have been alarmed by the lack of desire on show at the KC Stadium, where they were upstaged by struggling Hull in every department.

He said: “The challenge for next year is to build a team that can get through the rough waters as well and that is going to be critical for us.

“We’ve got a lot of fantastic players but when it is tough we have to get through that and if we want to make a challenge like we did last year, that is what we have to do.

“The challenge for me until the end of pre-season is to rebuild a group that can get through. The players here have given their best to meet that challenge but we have to refocus again and look to improve the squad.”

Along with increasingly influential Brazilian Philippe Coutinho, captain Jordan Henderson has offered one of the rare bright spots in an increasingly difficult campaign.

And Henderson has insisted clocking off early is not an option as his side look to give something back to the fans – including those who boycotted Tuesday night’s game in protest at the £50 admission charge.

Henderson told LFC TV: “We’ve just got to keep going. We’ve got to move on as quickly as possible to the next game and hopefully try to win every game from now until the end of the season and see where we are.

“We’ve got to lift ourselves because we know at the weekend QPR will be right up for it and it will be a difficult game.

“But we set high expectations of ourselves and we expect to be winning games like this. The next game is important so we’ll need to make sure we bounce back.”

Following the Reds’ abysmal 1-0 defeat against Steve Bruce’s Tigers, Ben Twelves picks a number of discussion points from a terrible evening at the KC Stadium.

Liverpool ended all remaining feint hopes of prolonging the race for Champions League qualification as they suffered an appalling defeat at the KC Stadium for the second successive season.

Michael Dawson’s first half header from Ahmed Elmohamady’s pin-point cross after being played onside by Mario Balotelli proved to be enough for the home side to overcome a dreadful Liverpool team, who turned in arguably their worst performance of a hugely disappointing season.

It was an unacceptable display from the first whistle to the last from Brendan Rodgers’ side, who were on the receiving end of a deserved defeat in Yorkshire – a loss that cranks up the pressure on the Liverpool manager – and here are the talking points from the fixture.

Rodgers and his Reds Continue to Crumble Under Pressure

Since a superb upturn in form forced Liverpool into top four reckoning in the middle of March, Rodgers and his side have cracked under the mounting pressure of sustaining the challenge.

The scrappy 1-0 win against Swansea on March 16th dragged the Reds to just two points behind Man United in the battle for a top four finish. After that game, just a month-and-a-half ago, Rodgers’ declared how his side could even finish second. They’ve crumbled since.

Instead, The Reds have won only two of their last seven games in all competitions, and Rodgers has looked increasingly short tactically, alongside making numerous baffling decisions with team selection in the process.

Pressure is on the 42-year-old manager more than ever before during his time in the Anfield hot-seat, and with the way performances and results have taken such an alarming turn for the worse since that crushing defeat to United at Anfield, scrutiny over his job has understandably intensified.

Simon Mignolet Continues 2015 Upturn

One positive on a desperate night was undoubtedly the performance of Mignolet who once again turned in a decent display between the sticks.

The Belgian produced three superb saves to keep the score goalless before Hull finally made the breakthrough with Dawson’s well placed header – something the ‘keeper could do nothing about – and everything he was called upon to do, the 26-year-old did well, and decisively.

With the home side focussing much of their play on dominating the Reds with crosses from wide and balls into the box, Mignolet dealt well with all that came his way, including a couple of excellent punches when under enormous pressure form the piling in Tigers – which saw him clean out striker Dame N’Doye and teammate Dejan Lovren on one particular occasion.

Usually criticised for his distribution, Mignolet remained composed with the ball at his feet – and was arguably more productive with it than all but one of the 10 shirts in front of him – and the golden glove contender enjoyed another composed game as he again looks every inch of a Liverpool first choice stopper.

Coutinho Reliance a Familiar Concern

KINGSTON-UPON-HULL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, April 28, 2015: Empty seats as Liverpool supporters boycott the game to protest at high ticket prices during the Premier League match against Hull City at the KC Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Another abject performance from Rodgers’ struggling Reds followed a familiar pattern, as Philippe Coutinho became Liverpool’s go-to man once more.

The Brazilian magician was the Reds only hope of any creative spark and attacking intent on a miserable night, and the 22-year-old’s desire to be the man to make the difference – shown as he recorded the most shots-on-target, key passes and dribbles of any Red – despite a complete lack of support around him, was as commendable as it was depressing.

Anything even mildly impressive centred around the tireless work of the Brazil international – who came closest to breaking the deadlock when his well hit strike from Jordan Henderson’s corner stung the palms of City stopper Steve Harper – and due to the distinct lack of movement ahead, it seemed the only way Liverpool would get back into the game was if Coutinho could latch on to one of his three key passes.

Despite his teammates having seemingly written off the season with five games to go, the memo clearly hadn’t reached the Brazilian who was the only shining light of the outfield players, in a side who appeared to have joined the supporters in their boycott of the game, and it is already worrying to think of the interest that will undoubtedly appear across the course of the summer.

Square Pegs in Round Holes Results in Disjointed Display

On a forgettable night in Yorkshire, Rodgers’ selection of a number of players out of position unquestionably proved a vital factor behind the Reds’ resulting poor performance.

With Emre Can at right back, Glen Johnson at left, Raheem Sterling shoved to an ineffective wide-role and Balotelli unsuited as a lone striker, Liverpool struggled to get a grip on the game due to the deployment of those picked operating in unnatural roles, and under-performing members yet again favoured over better options on the bench.

The Reds struggled to find any rhythm in their play and comfort with and without the ball as a result, and even when attempting to freshen his side up and swing momentum in Liverpool’s favour, Rodgers made the bizarre call to introduce Lazar Markovic at right-back, rather than into a natural attacking position while specialist defender Javi Manquillo remained on the bench.

The consequences were plain for all to see as a hideous performance and result ensued for Rodgers’ men, and it really does beggar belief that the Liverpool manager continues to cause himself more problems, by opting against utilising players to their natural strengths when it is wholly avoidable in most cases.

Mario Balotelli Blows Chance to Impress

The Italian striker had the opportunity to show why his time at Anfield shouldn’t come to the end widely predicted this summer, but he failed to grab the chance handed to him.

KINGSTON-UPON-HULL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, April 28, 2015: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks on as Hull City players celebrate the first goal scored by Michael Dawson during the Premier League match at the KC Stadium. (Pic by Gareth Jones/Propaganda)

Though he was not helped by the uncreative and dysfunctional attacking line-up in support of him, Balotelli certainly didn’t help himself on the night, as he once again displayed a desperate lack of movement to compliment his un-productivity on the ball, making for a blunt Liverpool attack.

The 24-year-old enjoyed the fewest touches of any Liverpool player on the night (19) showing how little he was involved in the game overall – something he could have helped had he been more willing to support the one-man show of Philippe Coutinho – who desperately tried to spark some life into the isolated front man.

A clever attempt with a back-heeled effort was as good as it got for the Italian, who came in for some rough treatment from the home side, but at a time when his Anfield future is of much speculation with reports indicating he will be one of the first out of the Anfield exit door this summer, Balotelli simply didn’t show enough in the 65 minutes played to force any change of opinion.

Next up for the Reds is other relegation threatened side, QPR at Anfield on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers admits defeat in top-four race but says owners 'will support' Liverpool marquee signings

The morning after Liverpool’s woeful 1-0 defeat to Hull City at the KC Stadium, we take a look at the best newspaper reaction from the game.

If ever there was a game that felt like effectively ending a side’s season, it was this.

Brendan Rodgers‘ men produced a pitiful display against a struggling Hull team, as any faint top-four hopes went up in flames.

Michael Dawson’s first-half header proved to be the difference, and barring a few half-chances for the Reds, the result never really looked in doubt.

Rodgers is now under more pressure than ever, with more and more fans rounding on the Northern Irishman. The five remaining matches this season could prove pivotal in his Liverpool future.

Here is how the watching press reacted to the game:

The team

Chris Bascombe of the Daily Telegraph, on why qualifying for the Champions League would have been pointless anyway:

It’s been unlikely for most of the season, but even if Brendan Rodgers’ side had caught Manchester United to sneak the last Champions League qualifying spot, what would be the point?

[…]

There is no value in qualifying for a competition you are not prepared for, and certainly not good enough to participate in.

The Daily Mail‘s Dominic King was scathing of the performance:

The wheels have come off in alarming fashion during the past month, with a sequence of defeats ensuring that ‘the light’ Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said had started shining on Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League has now been switched off.

They were, in a word, wretched. For all that Liverpool had a lot of the ball, Brendan Rodgers never looked convinced the huffing and puffing would blow Hull away and he had no option but to accept this defeat. His challenge is now preventing a miserable year fizzling out completely.

James McMath of the Guardian was equally non-plussed:

Liverpool’s biggest problem, though, is clearly not in midfield. Without Luis Suárez, now of Barcelona, without Daniel Sturridge, injured more often than not, and with Mario Balotelli, they simply do not pose enough of a threat in attack.

[Jordan] Henderson let fly with a shot from 20 yards that Harper gathered the ball at the second attempt and there was time for one last chance for Liverpool as Lallana found space to curl an effort towards goal from the corner of the 18-yard box but the ball drifted narrowly wide. A tame attempt from one of Liverpool’s big summer signings that typified Liverpool’s plight.

As was James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo:

The boycott over ticket prices received more support than anyone could have imagined. More than 1,200 Kopites with tickets stayed away and Liverpool’s players followed suit by also failing to turn up at the KC Stadium.

Reds fans picked a good night to protest 125 miles away and send a powerful message in the ongoing battle to bring down the soaring cost of watching Premier League football. All they missed was a pitiful performance with Michael Dawson’s first-half header sending Liverpool into an ever deeper malaise.

Having made a habit of bottling it on the big stage recently, Brendan Rodgers’ side have now started going AWOL against the lesser lights.

Individuals and Rodgers

Chris Bascombe on Emre Can:

Can was signed as an all-action midfielder but has yet to feature regularly in the position. Instead he has played centre-half (who spends most of his time moving into midfield) or as was the case on Tuesday night a right back (who spends most of his time moving into midfield).

With the ball, Can looks the part, but without it he is no right back, as was shown when he was regularly exposed as Hull attacked down the flank. It again brings into focus Liverpool’s transfer strategy. How about signing players to fit a system rather than players who require the system to changed on a weekly basis? Is that too radical a theory?

The Independent‘s Simon Hart, on Mario Balotelli:

Liverpool have spent an estimated £770m on 190 players (since last winning the league title in 1990) and the £16m blown on Balotelli must rate among their worst deals. That was the verdict of the Hull fans, too, who chanted “what a waste of money” at Balotelli when he trudged off to be replaced by Rickie Lambert.

James Pearce, on why Rodgers has to take the blame:

Where earlier in the campaign Rodgers was lauded for the tactical solutions which got Liverpool going again, now the problems just keep stacking up.

What he’s trying simply isn’t working. There is no spark, no guile. The Reds have lost their identity and the buck stops with the manager.

David Maddock of the Mirror believes the Liverpool manager’s position is growing increasingly vulnerable:

They (Liverpool) had little belief, and now no hope of catching Manchester United in the top four. That has put the spotlight on the tenure of manager Brendan Rodgers and the policy of the club’s American owners.

They have entirely failed to address the gaping hole left by the departure of Luis Suarez and the signing of Balotelli looks more bizarre by the day, as does his incomprehensible selection after one league win in five matches.

The FA Cup semi-final defeat made life uncomfortable for Rodgers, but what seems like a lame surrender at the end of a disappointing campaign will only make it more difficult still, and raise again the spectre of Jurgen Klopp.

ESPN‘s Steven Kelly was also critical of Rodgers, but did at least have some kind words to say about Simon Mignolet:

Few players came out of this with credit, but at some point they’re entitled to ask if they are being helped by the manager of late. This feeble limp to the finish line will only get more tongues wagging about Rodgers’ future.

[…]

He did nearly everything asked of him but was left helpless by a powerful, accurate header from Michael Dawson for the only goal of the game.

[…]

The Belgian’s resurgence may be the only noteworthy event in this drab season.

Next up for Liverpool is Saturday’s clash with QPR at Anfield (3:00pm kick-off GMT). What did you think of the Hull game? Let us know in the comments below.

“Liverpool were wretched” – How the papers reacted to defeat at Hull City

Unknown   at  16:25  No comments

The morning after Liverpool’s woeful 1-0 defeat to Hull City at the KC Stadium, we take a look at the best newspaper reaction from the game.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists the owners will support the club with marquee signings this summer.

Speaking after the 1-0 defeat by Hull, which put a huge dent in their Champions League ambitions this season, Rodgers conceded that his current squad

A place in the Europa League is also far from assured, underlining why Rodgers is under pressure after a season when they have not been able to cope with the sale of Luis Suarez and injuries to Daniel Sturridge.

"You can't hide the fact we've lost over 50 goals," said Rodgers. "Even with those players we weren't tipped to get in the top four and we haven't got those players now. We have to work with what we've got.

"Now we have to look to improve the squad and it's always great if you can get marquee players to come in and help you. The owners will support that.

"Everyday you come into work at Liverpool you are working for your future."

Rodgers will be heading into his fourth season at Anfield in August, a tenure that has so far yielded seventh and second-place finishes.

And the Northern Irishman says after the heights of last season, this term was always going to be tough.

"We want to be in the top four, but that was always going to be difficult because we were playing catch up for a lot of the season.

"We lost a couple of big games which dented our confidence a bit. I need to build a team that can get through the rough waters as well. We need a team that can get through the smooth and the rough.

"That will be my challenge - to rebuild a group that can get through the rough waters."

Glen Johnson: Liverpool defender expecting to leave this summer

Glen Johnson: Liverpool defender expecting to leave this summer

Glen Johnson is not expecting to stay at Liverpool beyond the end of the season, when his current deal expires.

The former England right-back has been in and out of Brendan Rodgers' plans this season and he has been linked in several papers with a move to Premier League rivals West Ham.

Johnson started his career at Upton Park, making his debut in 2002, and went on to join Chelsea and Portsmouth before arriving at Liverpool in 2009 - he has since made over 200 appearances for the Reds.

He started the 1-0 defeat at Hull on Tuesday night and was questioned about his Anfield future afterwards.

When asked whether he was resigned to leaving, Johnson told Sky Sports: "I would have thought so - I haven't got a contract.

"We'll have to wait and see (if that is going to change).

"I don't think so but we have to wait and see."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with his side’s defending on the goal that won the game for Hull on Tuesday night.

Rodgers said:

“We’re frustrated. Yet again we’ve had enough of the ball in good areas of the field but just lacked that killer instinct in the final third of the field.”

Speaking of the goal conceded from a corner, Rodgers said:

“We’re disappointed with the goal. Apart from the goal we didn’t have too many chances against us but that was poor defending really from us. We didn’t come out together. It’s a free header in the centre of the goal, which should never happen.”

“Now we’ve just got to finish off the season as strong as we can,” he concluded.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his desire for the club to sign proven quality players in the summer transfer window.

Speaking after this side’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City on Tuesday night, Rodgers said: “For supporters, and for players themselves, it is always great if you can get in those marquee players that can really help you.”

“And I think we can see that that’s the type, maybe the one or two players, that we need.”

This follows similar words from the Northern Irishman last week, as rumours suggest he and the club’s owners differ on transfer policy. It’s claimed Rodgers wants to shift the emphasis to proven players rather than only sign players for the future.

Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph claimed recently: “He [Rodgers] wants players of greater maturity and pedigree to complement the younger elements of his side, who are inevitably prone to inconsistency.”

The Mirror‘s David Maddock, reported similarly, saying Rodgers “wants a slight change in the recruitment policy which has placed a strong emphasis on young players with potential, by bringing more established stars better placed to go straight into the first team.”

On this summer’s transfer strategy, Rodgers told reporters after the Hull defeat:

“The club are working very hard, and the owners will support that. If they are attainable, and affordable within the model, the club will do everything they can to get them.”

“Every season, you have to try and improve.

“You can’t hide away from the fact that we’ve lost over 50 goals, and any team that loses that is going to struggle.

“With Suarez and Sturridge last season, we still weren’t tipped to be in the top four, we were still written off! Now, without them, the challenge is even greater for us.

“The players have given their best, but we have to refocus again, look to improve in the summer, as every team will do.”

Mario Balotelli clashed with Tom Huddleston during Liverpool's defeat at Hull City

Mario Balotelli clashed with Tom Huddleston during Liverpool's defeat at Hull City

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has suffered a gashed foot and will be assessed over the next few days, manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.

The Italy striker cut a frustrated figure yet again during the Reds 1-0 defeat at Hull City, which left them seven points short of the top-four with four games. left.

Balotelli, who was at fault for Michael Dawson’s headed goal, was eventually substituted in the 65th minute and had an ice pack on his foot as he watched the rest of the game from the bench.

“He’s got a bad gash to his foot. We’ll see how that is over next couple of days,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

“I’m disappointed with their goal.  We had enough men in the box to deal with it and it didn’t come out the right way. Michael Dawson was onside and had a free header.

“Apart from that they didn’t have too many chances. I thought we had enough of the ball but never really looked like scoring. We had a couple of near-chances – some good moments of build-up – but we never really threatened.”

Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League have all but mathematically dissipated, with their final four games of the season coming against QPR, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Stoke.

And Rodgers said: “The opportunity to get into the Champions League was always going to be difficult.

“We lost key players and introduced a lot of new players. We have to work with what we’ve got. They’re a good honest bunch, who work hard every day, and they’ve got to get over the disappointment now.

“We’ve got to focus on the next game. We need to finish this season strongly and regroup again before the end of pre-season.”

After Liverpool fell to a miserable 1-0 loss away to Hull City in the Premier League on Tuesday night, Jack Lusby provides his player ratings.

Hull City 1-0 Liverpool
Premier League – The KC Stadium – Tuesday, 28th April 2015

Simon Mignolet (Out of 10) – 7 (Liverpool Man of the Match)

While the misery plays out in front of him as Liverpool’s season dies, Simon Mignolet continues to put in solid performance after solid performance, and Brendan Rodgers‘ side would have likely been embarassed at the KC Stadium without him.

A fine save from Dame N’Doye’s point-blank first-half header stands out as a highlight from the No. 22, who collected dangerous set pieces bravely and commanded his penalty area well.

Emre Can – 4.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Operating again in the right-back role that saw him relatively marooned in the Reds’ 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the weekend, Emre Can’s function in Rodgers’ 4-3-3 at the KC was a difficult one to calculate.

He probed forward with endeavour, helping Liverpool on the break, but was humiliated consistently when in defensive situations, with the lively Robbie Brady flourishing. When moved into a centre-back role it was much the same.

It is a disservice to the German to misuse him so carelessly, particularly when specialist defensive right-back Javier Manquillo stares on blankly from the substitutes’ bench.

Martin Skrtel – 5.5

Martin Skrtel shone in the central position in Rodgers’ much-lauded back-three defensive line earlier this season for two salient reasons: his duties were limited to a pure, physical defensive game, and his time in possession was restricted to short passes to Can and Mamadou Sakho in the more progressive roles on his flanks.

With Rodgers reverting to a back four now in a 4-3-3, Skrtel’s flaws are exposed, and it was much the same at the KC.

When challenged physically, Skrtel typically prevailed; when asked to do anything else—as evidenced by his comparatively low 83.3 percent passing accuracy—he struggled. Luckily, Hull’s game-plan largely relied on the former.

Dejan Lovren – 5

WEST BROMWICH, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2015: Liverpool's Dejan Lovren applauds the supporters after the goal-less draw against West Bromwich Albion during the Premier League match at the Hawthorns. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After an efficient display at the Hawthorns at the weekend, Dejan Lovren was again fielded in Rodgers’ defence and largely kept things simple in a tidy display.

However, despite this, the 25-year-old offered a lot less in terms of physical prowess when compared to Skrtel, typically shrinking from the action. Lovren is building his confidence, but still not offering enough; the absence of Sakho is profound.

Glen Johnson – 5

Once again serving as Rodgers’ left-back, with Alberto Moreno troubled with a minor injury, Glen Johnson offered a more conservative performance to that of the weekend, when he was dire.

Johnson was relatively solid defensively and supported more cohesively than Can at right-back, but lacked any real incision in the final third.

Joe Allen – 7

Hull were largely restricted to attacking from wide areas and set pieces on Tuesday night, and this was thanks to a wonderful job performed by Joe Allen in breaking up play in central midfield.

The Welshman was tenacious in the challenge, wise in his movement off the ball and efficient in possession—registering the highest passing accuracy (88.2 percent) of any Reds player to last the full 90 minutes at the KC.

It is an unfashionable role, but one performed diligently by a quietly impressive Allen.

Jordan Henderson – 5.5

Operating in a much different role to that of Allen, Jordan Henderson was ostensibly tasked with his natural box-to-box duties, supporting attacks off the ball, as well as that of a deep-lying play-making outlet when in possession.

He was successful at times, but too easily shunted into the periphery. Didn’t impose himself enough in the Liverpool captain’s armband.

Philippe Coutinho – 6.5

After the game, unsurprisingly, Rodgers attributed Philippe Coutinho with a customary “outstanding,” and the 22-year-old No. 10 was, once again, one of the Reds’ brightest performers.

Serving as Liverpool’s creative hub in an advanced central-midfield role, Coutinho was the only truly inspiring attacking player on Tuesday night, with everything going through him in the final third.

Unfortunately, due to a wider lack of ingenuity, nothing really connected for the Brazilian.

Raheem Sterling – 4.5

Raheem Sterling has been far from his best in recent games, and this continued on Tuesday night. The 20-year-old toiled to no avail in a left-wing position, isolated from attacks and spurned by rigid Hull defending.

Sterling was dispossessed five times and made three unsuccessful touches at the KC—he was personally sloppy and expertly restricted in equal measure. Ineffective.

Jordon Ibe – 5

While much the same as Sterling on the opposite flank, Jordon Ibe offered slightly more invention in his attacking play.

As touched upon, however, this was to little benefit of Liverpool’s overall joy going forward. The Reds were too often out of sync, typified by Ibe’s isolated positioning at wide-left.

Mario Balotelli – 3.5

After rumours that German 20-year-old Samed Yesil would start up front for the Reds at the KC, it was a slight surprise to see Mario Balotelli reprising the lone-striker role he has so struggled in this season.

It was unfortunately much of the same from the lacklustre No. 45.

Balotelli made just 19 touches of the ball in his 65 minutes on the pitch, often in a position too deep to trouble Steve Harper in Hull’s goal. It may not be his doing, but Balotelli was again on a different wavelength to the rest of the Liverpool attack.

Substitutes:

Adam Lallana (on for Ibe, 65′) – 5 – Showed some creativity moving forward, but couldn’t help pick apart the Hull defence.

Rickie Lambert (on for Balotelli, 65′) – 3 – A roll of the dice from Rodgers that should not have been necessary, Lambert’s introduction saw the Reds revert to a route-one approach to attack. Not that he contributed anything in that regard. Very poor.

Lazar Markovic (on for Lovren, 76′) – 5 – Brought on in a decidedly advanced right-back role as Liverpool probed for an equaliser, Markovic’s pace did help stretch things slightly, but with no real end-product.

Brendan Rodgers – 4

After his side failed to break through at the Hawthorns in an uninspiring 4-3-3 system, it could have been expected to see Rodgers switch things up as he looked for a much-needed victory on Tuesday night—disappointingly, we saw much of the same.

Can struggled at right-back, Balotelli lumbered as a lone striker and Sterling and Ibe were too wide to latch on to Coutinho’s creativity.

The Brazilian being used in a central role in the midfield three is perhaps the only commendable decision Rodgers has made of late—Rodgers has made too many mistakes.

In-game decisions such as throwing on Lambert, again as a lone striker, as well as switching Can to centre-back rather than midfield and the continued Javier Manquillo snub will throw warranted questions over his tactical sanity.

An uninspired showing from an under-fire manager.

Lee Probert went about his business without little fuss, keeping things flowing when possible and keeping his cards in his pocket unless absolutely necessary.

Hull City 1-0 Liverpool: Player Ratings

Unknown   at  06:23  No comments
