Liverpool are hardly known for their defensive stability under Brendan Rodgers, with the Reds often shipping goals at an alarming rate.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 19, 2014: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel clears the ball off the line against Queens Park Rangers during the Premier League match at Loftus Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Indeed, the 50 goals against last season was 13 more than champions Man City conceded and what many point to as the reason for Liverpool’s failure to win the league.

This season the Reds have shipped 27 goals in 21 Premier League games under Rodgers, with a goal difference of just two – only Tottenham and Swansea in the top half have conceded more so far.

LFC statistician Andrew Beasley has crunched the numbers and compared Rodgers’ goals for, against and goal difference records against Liverpool’s modern day managers, dating back to Bill Shankly in 1959.

Defensively, Rodgers comes out bottom – with a goals against record of 1.26 per game, worse even than under Graeme Souness’ miserable reign in the nineties. That means, on average, Liverpool must score two to win any game under Rodgers.

However, this defensive deficiency is contrasted by Rodgers’ goals scored per game record being the best of the lot at 1.97 per game, just head of Kenny Dalglish‘s 1.92 as manager.

Not surprisingly there, Souness and Hodgson have the worst goals for record.

Using both for and against to get the goal difference, it’s Dalglish who comes out on top. Rodgers, despite having the best goals for, comes out seventh – showing just how bad the goals against record is.

Xherdan Shaqiri: Happy to have joined Inter Milan

Xherdan Shaqiri: Happy to have joined Inter Milan

Xherdan Shaqiri is confident he has made the right decision to join Inter Milan after turning down offers to join the Premier League in the January transfer window.

The Switzerland international joined Inter from Bayern Munich last week and has signed a contract that will keep him at San Siro until June 2019.

The 23-year-old midfielder had been strongly linked with a move to England, where Everton, Liverpool and Stoke were reportedly keen to acquire his services.

Inter unveiled Shaqiri on Wednesday and he told the Italian press: "I had offers from England and Germany but my wish was to join Inter.

"Juventus was also an option but I wanted Inter.

"I spoke to (Inter coach Roberto) Mancini on the phone and he explained the project to me and it really had an impact.

"The choice was very clear. Moreover, the idea to play in a new league fascinated me."

Shaqiri joined Bayern from Basle in 2012 and won two Bundesliga medals and the 2013 Champions League with the German club, but he struggled to establish himself in the first team.

"I wasn't totally happy at Bayern," he said. "I didn't have much playing time.

"But I've learned a lot at Bayern and I will try to make the most of my time at Inter. I need to play consistently in order to prove how much I'm worth.

"I am hungry for success. I can't wait to get started.

"I want to help Inter return to be at the top in Italy and in Europe. I hope that with this jersey I can return to win titles."

Shaqiri could make his Inter debut on Saturday when Inter face Empoli in Tuscany.

Inter, who are currently ninth in Serie A, are still alive in both the Coppa Italia and the Europa League, where they will face Celtic in last 32.

Martin Skrtel is one of the players benefiting most from Liverpool’s recent tactical switch, as part of Brendan Rodgers’ back three, writes Jack Lusby.

While Martin Skrtel has been regularly, and often rightly, criticised for his performances this season, manager Brendan Rodgers’ recent switch to a back three has seen the defender improve.

Rodgers’ 3-4-2-1 system, which he described as “the way we want to work,” has reintroduced a potency to Liverpool’s attack, but also a stability to their defence.

Skrtel has played all but one game since this tactical switch, and that due to suspension, and his form has picked up arguably as a result.

So how has Skrtel improved since Rodgers introduced a back three, and how much of this is due to a change in personnel?

Skrtel’s Strengths

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel in action against Southampton's Graziano Pelle during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

When Skrtel donned a protective headband and scored a late equaliser in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal this season, descriptions of the defender as “brave” were derided, but there is a merit to this.

The 30-year-old is very much from football’s old school, and there is little nuance to his game.

Skrtel’s priority, first and foremost, is to stop the ball reaching the goal, and to clear from danger whenever possible.

Clearances are perhaps the most succinct way to analyse Skrtel’s game of ‘if in doubt, get it out,’ and he has made an average of 10.39 per game this season, more than any other Liverpool player.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Dejan Lovren in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It has been a hugely disappointing season for Lovren so far, and at this January crossroads the former Southampton man has reached the stage where it is difficult to identify where he can force his way back into Rodgers’ plans.

By and large, this disappointment has stemmed from a calamitous partnership with Skrtel this season, and as a tandem the pair helped foster nervousness in Rodgers’ defence.

When paired together, in 13 games, Skrtel and Lovren have kept just two clean sheets.

In those 13 games, Liverpool have conceded 21 goals.

Adopting Rodgers’ defensive mantra of building from the back, Lovren and Skrtel have respective passing accuracies of 88 and 92 per cent this season.

Errors Made in 2014/15

Skrtel – 4

Lovren – 6

However, with 10 defensive errors between them when played together, this is not necessarily a positive.

Too often the pair found themselves under pressure due to their uninspired short passing at the back—resulting in their high passing accuracies—and that is where these errors typically stem from.

Together, Skrtel and Lovren have proven to be a frustrating partnership, but with the former moving into a back three of late under Rodgers, with the latter injured, a significant improvement has been registered.

Mamadou Sakho and Emre Can

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho in action against Middlesbrough during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In recent weeks, Rodgers’ back line has morphed from a Glen Johnson-Skrtel-Lovren back three, to a flirtation with Kolo Toure as right- centre-back due to Johnson’s injury, to the now-settled line-up of Emre Can, Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho.

As a result, Liverpool’s performances have markedly improved, and so have Skrtel’s individual displays.

Since the start of their involvement in Liverpool’s back three, in the Boxing Day victory over Burnley, Can and Sakho have made 48 and 57 passes on average per game respectively.

BOSTON, USA - Wednesday, July 23, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against AS Roma at Fenway Park on day three of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Can’s passing accuracy has averaged at 86 per cent, while Sakho’s is at 90 per cent.

Most importantly, however, during that time both have averaged at a key pass every other game. Lovren has averaged 0.06 per game, and Skrtel 0.17.

The prowess of Can and Sakho in creating from deep, and providing a certain impetus that Lovren failed to inject, has allowed Skrtel to focus on his natural duties.

That Skrtel’s average number of clearances per game has fallen to 7.67 from the season’s average of 10.39 in this recent period, too, perhaps underlines the calming influence of Can and Sakho.

Furthermore, since the introduction of Can and Sakho at his flanks, Skrtel has made no defensive errors—arguably due to this instilling of calm.

Finally, in their three games as a trio, Liverpool have kept two clean sheets and conceded just one goal.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel in action against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Skrtel’s improved statistical output is indicative of his comfort in a back three that includes Can and Sakho deployed at his defensive flanks—the no-nonsense style can thrive while the cultured pair focus on more progressive business.

Skrtel can now focus on the fundamental defensive work he has proven to thrive at: tackles, blocks and, when required, clearances.

When in possession, Skrtel can now search for either Can or Sakho with a simple pass, and they can continue play.

This has instilled a stability in Liverpool’s defence that the Skrtel-Lovren partnership failed to provide—watching the pair dally with the ball at the back this season, supporters grew audibly restless, and the poor distributional outlet of Simon Mignolet only exacerbated issues.

Now in back three, with the support of Emre Can and Mamadou Sakho, the raw defensive abilities of Martin Skrtel are allowed to blossom.

As expected, Liverpool are to return to Australia as part of their pre-season tour this summer – visiting Adelaide and Brisbane.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - Wednesday, July 24, 2013: Liverpool take on Melbourne Victory during a preseason friendly match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Liverpool Echo report the that the confirmation is expected to be announced early in February.

The Reds will stop off in Asia on the way to and back from Australia, with Indonesia set to be one of the destinations and China the other likely destination.

The tour will continue the club’s trend of heading west to America one summer then east to Asia and Australia the following.

Two years ago Brendan Rodgers‘ side played at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of an incredible 95,000 capacity crowd. That was their first visit to Australia and such success has always meant they were likely to return this summer.

The 53,000 seater Adelaide Oval will host one match, with the 52,500 seater Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane also likely.

Incredibly, the match in Adelaide would be the first time a Premier League club has visited the state of South Australia since Sheffield United in 1994, according to the Echo’s report.

Screen Shot 2015-01-14 at 10.56.34

Liverpool’s expected stop in Indonesia is part of their commercial partnership with Garuda Indonesia airlines which they signed last year.

Liverpool last visited China in 2011.

The last two summer’s have seen Rodgers’ side face north-west side Preston North End before flying out to their respective tour destinations.

There could also be a post-season friendly in late May – which could in fact turn out to be Steven Gerrard‘s final game for the club. The Reds took on Shamrock Rovers in May last year and have previously attempted to organise friendlies in South Africa.

With no international tournaments this summer, post and pre-season offer more time for such activities.

Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique is wanted on loan at Crystal Palace, according to The Telegraph.

John Percy writes that new Eagles boss Alan Pardew has made an inquiry for the Spanish defender and is keen to offer him regular football at Selhurst Park.

Palace are in need of a left-back, with former Liverpool defender Martin Kelly having arrived in the summer meaning regular right-back Julian Ward has deputised in the role.

With Jon Flanagan nearing a return to fitness, Brendan Rodgers may be tempted to allow Enrique – one of the club’s high earners given his role as a backup player – to leave on loan.

Speaking last week, Rodgers said “If everyone stays there might be a few who need to go out on loan because they are not playing so much.” Enrique would certainly fit into that category.

The Spaniard, 28, missed most of last season due to a knee injury and has made just five starts this campaign. The recent change to 3-4-2-1 shape has seen his opportunities limited further, with Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic rotating between the left wing-back / midfield position.

Earlier in the week, Pardew admitted he had attempted to sign another Liverpool player, forward Rickie Lambert.

“I had a conversation with Brendan [about Lambert] but I don’t think Rickie is going anywhere,” said the new Palace boss. “I think Rickie wants to stay there and try and win his position.”

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has given a tour of his trophy room to Kicca.

Carragher made 737 appearances for the Reds between 1997 and 2013 and his most treasured memorabilia includes a framed photograph of the Kop’s mosaic on his last match for the club.

“It was a lovely gesture from the club to arrange that,” he says.

His England and England Under-21 caps are also given their pride of place, alongside trophies and mementos from his own sporting heroes.

Liverpool forwards Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini will not be returning to their native Italy in the January transfer window, according to their agents.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 16, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini looks dejected as PFC Ludogorets Razgrad score a late equalising goal during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

With striker Daniel Sturridge to return from a long injury lay-off later this month, the pair are set to slip even further down the pecking order.

In the absence of Raheem Sterling, who was given a short break by manager Brendan Rodgers, Borini was preferred to his fellow countryman in Saturday’s victory at Sunderland but neither are likely to feature prominently in the remainder of the season.

However, despite both being linked with moves back to Italy the agents of Balotelli and Borini insist that will not happen.

“[Balotelli] has a contract with Liverpool and can’t really be offered to other clubs,” agent Mino Raiola told Mediaset Premium.

“He chose to leave Italy and was aware of what he was leaving; he hasn’t had the success he was hoping for, but he still needs time.

“Juventus have denied their interest in him, and I have had absolutely no contact with Inter (Milan), so that’s the current situation now.”

Borini’s representative Marco de Marchi has also denied his player will be leaving Anfield. “Borini will not return to Italy in January,” he told SportItalia. “He is happy with Liverpool, the club he is playing for.”

Rodgers expects there to be little or no business done in this transfer window with any departures likely to be loans for players who have not had much pitch time.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 28, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers substitutes Jon Flanagan during the 222nd Merseyside Derby Premiership match against Everton at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

His injury list is easing with defender Jon Flanagan set to return soon having not featured since the end of last season because of a knee injury.

The 22-year-old, who has been used on both the left and right side of defence by Rodgers, is out of contract in the summer and increased competition in those areas – Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno both arrived last summer – presents a challenge for him in the next couple of months.

“When I saw that we signed two full-backs, I immediately thought ‘I need to up my game now’,” he told the Official Liverpool Magazine.

“I know I need to consistently do well if I’m to get in the team and then stay there.

“I want to keep developing as a footballer, that’s why not being available has been so frustrating, but competition for places doesn’t bother me. I’m always up for the fight.

“I’ve been out for what has felt like a really long time. I’ve got in the team before and kept my place. Now I need to do that again.”

There has been no update on the fitness of captain Steven Gerrard, who was withdrawn as a precaution at half-time at Sunderland due to tightness in his hamstring.
