UCL PREVIEW

Liverpool Vs PFC Ludogorets Razgrad.

Team News!

Last 5 game

Ludogorets - W D W D L

Injury dan Penggantungan

Liverpool

Markovic (penggantungan Red Card di Semifinal Europa League bersama Benfica musim lepas)

Ludogorets

LIVERPOOL TACTICAL PREVIEW!

Semoga Liverpool kembali bangkit memberikan aksi terbaik.

Raheem Sterling: Was left on the bench on Saturday

Raheem Sterling: Was left on the bench on Saturday

Liverpool FanZoner Richard Garnett reflects on Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa and says Brendan Rodgers got his team wrong.

A bad day at the office or not yet the real deal? Either way, Rodgers did not get his team right against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The absence of Daniel Sturridge was unfortunate but the omission of Raheem Sterling was entirely avoidable. He may only be 19, but in the post-Suarez era everything runs through him already.

Rodgers is perfectly entitled to protect his crown jewel, but if he underestimated the little wizard’s importance to this Liverpool side before then he surely doesn't now.

Saturday’s hugely disappointing display featured no fewer than four home debutants, with three forming the spearhead of the Anfield attack. The result was an easy afternoon for the Villa defence as a lack of dynamism and familiarity afforded Brad Guzan a day off.

But it wasn’t just the selection of promising newcomers that left some supporters scratching their heads. Against Southampton and Manchester City Rodgers favoured one central striker and saw his side struggle to cause much trouble in the box.

No such problem at White Hart Lane, where centre forward pairing Mario Balotelli and Sturridge caused enough bother to allow Sterling to run riot.

If squad rotation was high on the agenda pre-Ludogorets, then surely this was an opportunity to put faith in Rickie Lambert and start the former Southampton man up front with his Italian counterpart.

Instead, supporters are left to debate whether Balotelli was immobile or just starved of service in a largely anonymous performance up top that makes a mockery of claims that Lambert doesn’t have the movement to start. There is plenty of reason to believe that he would've given Philippe Senderos a tougher 90 minutes.

It’s no secret that strikers run on confidence so it is essential that all of Liverpool’s forwards get opportunities to keep themselves sharp. 19 minutes is better than nothing, but Rodgers certainly could’ve done things differently here.

Another apparent issue is the deployment of two deep-lying midfielders. This is expected of Steven Gerrard these days but Jordan Henderson has the legs to unsettle defenders, instead he watched on as the Anfield rookies huffed and puffed up dead ends.

Not to be outdone by their peers, Liverpool’s defence - featuring three new recruits - was back to its shaky best. Martin Skrtel’s stock rising considerably, simply by not playing.

If not much was happening on the pitch then it was no better off it. Teatime kick-offs may be an inconvenience to supporters but they usually make for a decent atmosphere.

Instead, the cloud of resignation set in by the hour mark, when the struggling reds were left to search for an equaliser in near silence. Evidence of the changing demographic in football?

Thankfully, this bad day out can be swiftly forgotten about, as Anfield warmly welcomes the return of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Their opponents may be an unknown quantity but European football is woven into the fabric of Liverpool FC and the occasion represents a swift opportunity to remind everyone that one poor performance is not going to undermine the brilliant work that has been done to bring these nights back to Anfield.

The manager rarely gets it wrong, so as long as the lessons of defeat are learnt and acted upon, such disappointments can be kept to a minimum.

Steven Gerrard insists Liverpool are not there to make up the numbers in this season’s UEFA Champions League as they look to use Anfield to their advantage.

Following a five-year absence from Europe’s elite club competition, the Reds host Bulgarian side Ludogorets at Anfield in a group which also contains the holders Real Madrid and Swiss champions Basel.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are widely expected to progress from Group B and reach the knock-out stages for the first time since 2009, but few are tipping them for a repeat of 2005’s glory.

"We understand that we are not the favourites," Gerrard told the Daily Mail. "There are some big hitters that people will be tipping to win.

"But the message from me, as captain of this team, is that we are not making up the numbers. No way.

"We have got such a big advantage over two legs with Anfield that other teams haven’t got.

"You come to Anfield and you’re getting a terribly hard 90 minutes. And we are going to make it even harder for you."

Liverpool went without European football completely last season and many believe that was an important factor in achieving a second-place finish and securing a Champions League return.

Gerrard, who is set to make his 69th appearance in the competition, says Rodgers’ side must now make sure they qualify again this year while also pushing for the latter stages.

"It’s the best competition to play in at club level. There’s a hole there when you are out of it," he said.

"Maybe you forget how lucky you are when you are consistently getting to the latter stages and popping up in finals. It was such an unbelievable achievement.

"But I’ve got confidence that might not be too far away if the owners continue to back Brendan Rodgers as they have done.

"I’ve got a lot of confidence in Brendan and the squad.

"I’ll put it another way, if we go out in the group stages, or the last 16, we will be majorly, majorly disappointed.

"We want to progress. We want to go as far as we can. This can’t be a one-off.

"This isn’t a reward for finishing second last year. I don’t see it as a reward.

"This is where Liverpool should be – and should be consistently. It’s the responsibility of me and the players to give it our best crack.

"It is important that we have got the Champions League next year as well."

Rodgers believes Liverpool's scouting of the Bulgarian minnows had revealed they were an open side but they may - as Villa did so successfully at the weekend - come to Anfield with a plan to frustrate.

The Reds boss insists his side are set up to cope with that.

"Their normal game in Bulgaria, the club's emphasis is to play attacking football," he said.

"They may want to come here and sit back of course, which is fine as a tactic but we only worry about ourselves.

"We are used to starting games quickly at Anfield but it is also vital if we don't get a goal in those early moments we don't concede."

"They may want to come here and sit back of course, which is fine as a tactic but we only worry about ourselves.

"We are used to starting games quickly at Anfield but it is also vital if we don't get a goal in those early moments we don't concede."

The Champions League returns to Anfield after an almost five-year hiatus on Tuesday night with the visit of Ludogorets. We sought the inner-genius of the This Is Anfield writers to share their Anfield European Cup memories…

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, August 27, 2008: Liverpool supporters on the Spion Kop during the UEFA Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round 2nd Leg match against Royal Standard de Liege at Anfield. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The criteria was simple. Choose one special Anfield-based Champions League memory and explain why it was important to you, whether you were at the game, or not.

MAX MUNTON

Liverpool vs Chelsea, 2007: As Dirk Kuyt struck home his winning penalty, the upper Anfield Road End began shaking, Anfield was bouncing. An eruption of noise, joyous celebration and relief. Just two years after Istanbul, Liverpool were back in a European Cup final and the party got back into full flow. We poured out of Anfield, into town where the euphoria and a sea of red and white continued into the streets of the city for the rest of the night.

HENRY JACKSON

Liverpool vs Chelsea, 2005: I remember being sat with my Dad as an 18-year-old having never been so nervous watching a Liverpool game in my life. The noise when Luis Garcia scored was simply unforgettable; I can only imagine what it was like actually being at Anfield on the night.

The second-half went by agonisingly slowly, and when six minutes of injury time was given by the referee it was unbearable to watch. To this day, Eidur Gudjohnsen’s last-gasp miss, which somehow went wide, remains my most heart-stopping moment ever as a Reds fanatic. To beat Jose Mourinho’s arrogant side and make it through to the final was truly special. The rest, as they say, was history.

LEE COATES

Liverpool vs Barcelona, 2001: Sometimes the losses stick with you more than the wins. Liverpool one, Barcelona three. On the back of a trophy collecting 2001 season, Liverpool were back among the champions of European countries. After strolling through the first group stage, the second group stage put us in the ‘Group of Death’. First up Barcelona. Our European Footballer of the Year, Michael Owen put us one – nil up. The Kop bounced, I hugged my brother and looked over a sea of heads to find my dad who was sat elsewhere. Half of these people under my searching eye hadn’t seen anything like it – I certainly hadn’t. Liverpool couldn’t stop winning. A seemingly meteoric rise through the football elite. Moments later, a Barcelona second half masterclass told us where we were. We were now in there with the best of them. We needed to raise our game. We needed to play even better than these lot are playing. I realised that this wasn’t a holiday. Liverpool must be doing this all the time. We must be playing these teams all the time. We must keep getting better. We must hold our own with the elite.

Three and half years later, we won the thing.

JAMIE CASEY

Liverpool vs Celtic, 2003: If ever an Anfield rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone chilled the spine, this was the moment. From the Kop, the Celtic supporters over on in the Anfield Road end were barely visible due to the sheer volume of flags and scarves waved aloft among the home support, but the Bhoys were in full voice too. Forget the disputable origins on who adopted the song first, and forget the result for that matter, because together we made the most spectacular noise for two and a half solid minutes.

JEFF GOULDING

Liverpool vs Chelsea, 2005: I was hoarse by kick-off. By the time Luis Garcia drove us and Jose mad, we’d been singing about Chelsea’s lack of history, and the Fields of Anfield Road, for almost forty five minutes. At first it didn’t register that we’d scored. Some of us were shouting penalty! Then, as realisation set in, there was an eruption of noise, pandemonium and a fall. I hit my back on a plastic seat, and took a knee to the head. I didn’t care. What followed was 92 minutes of excruciating anxiety, but the sound that greeted full-time erased all of that. The ground seemed to shake, and my legs dissolved to mush. I felt euphoric and sick at the same time. John Terry was in tears, and Stevie was punching the air in sheer unadulterated joy. After two decades, Liverpool were finally back where we belong.

STE SPEED

Liverpool vs Olympiakos, 2005: Without this goal there would have been no Istanbul and possibly no more Steven Gerrard as a Liverpool player at the end of that season. I watched the game in Bangkok airport waiting for my flight home, having spent the previous two years globe trotting. I was sitting in the airport bar nursing the one drink I could afford and a plate of fries a generous fellow passenger had bought me. I was in my Liverpool shirt surrounded by American businessmen just watching ESPN. I couldn’t believe my luck when the game came on the TV.

When Stevie’s belter flew in, it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. I jumped out of my seat and ran around the bar like a lunatic before exchanging high fives with the Americans. They ended up buying me drinks afterwards because they’d been so entertained by my antics during the game.

STEVEN HARRIS

Liverpool vs OPS Oulu, 1981: Played the night after the death of Bill Shankly, the score line was almost irrelevant. Shankly’s name rang around Anfield before kick-off, during quieter moments of an entirely one sided match, and most vociferously after the game had finished. The man who made Liverpool would have been proud of the 7-0 dispatching of the Finnish champions. His final signing for the club – Ray Kennedy – was one of those on the score sheet. High emotions and the beginning of weeks of heartfelt tributes from the fans to the man who made them happy.

NATALIE CORK

Liverpool vs Juventus, 2005: A striker’s finish from Sami Hyypia and a stunning dipping volley from Luis Garcia gave us a 2-0 lead after only 25 minutes. Our start against the Seria A giants sent Anfield into hysteria and some what disbelief on what was an emotional night. Juventus had only conceded two goals in the tournament before this showdown, making us believe that we may well get our hands on ‘old big ears’ for the 5th time…

SIMON COLLINGS

Liverpool vs Real Madrid, 2009: Although not the formidable side they are now, hammering Madrid 4-0 at any time is a special occasion. After Fernando Torres had opened the scoring, Gerrard took over – tucking away a penalty and then rounding off a tremendous move with a half volley past the hapless Iker Casillas. Andrea Dossena completed the rout late on as the Spanish giants took one hell of a beating! The result kicked off a great run of form for the reds, as the 4-1 win at Old Trafford was next, closely followed by a 5-0 drubbing of Villa (before they became our new bogey side!). Great times indeed!

DAN HOLLAND

Liverpool vs Roma, 2002: It was a March evening and a last 16 tie at Anfield, needing a two goal victory to progress the atmosphere would have been electric in any case. Throw into the mix a returning Gerard Houllier from major heart surgery and the atmosphere reached fever pitch. Pre kick off on a European night the place is always bouncing but this continued as a Limanen penalty put us ahead before Heskey netted the winner halfway into the second half. Roma were amongst the favourites to win the competition and there is no doubt Houllier’s return lifted both players and fans alike.

NEIL POOLE

Liverpool vs PSV Eindhoven, 2007: Having had plenty of stress and excitement during 27 years of going to Anfield and being present at plenty of the heart stopping moments, the dead rubber and 1 nil victory over PSV stands out as being particularly joyous. It was our third year on the bounce in the Champions League since Istanbul and we were going into the second leg of a quarter final knowing that we were effectively through. Cue party atmosphere, singing to entertain ourselves and zero tension. This Champions League malarkey was easy. We won. Another semi-final against Chelsea awaited. No biggy. It was great being that good.

And one very special non-Anfield Champions League memory thrown in for good measure…

MARCO LOPES

Liverpool vs AC Milan, 2005: For some reason, I’ve always been surrounded by Mancs at work and home, & they didn’t waste any time before & during the first half to remind me how supreme Milan’s obviously superior side was to Liverpool. I remember being somewhat defiantly bullish at halftime though. I didn’t anticipate the comeback but I reminded all the Mancs who made the effort to text me abuse that a match normally lasts more than 45 minutes.

By the end of the 2nd half, I’d caused them to switch off their phones and stop talking to me. By work the next morning – I was insufferable, and they’d learnt a valuable lesson not to underestimate the spirit of Liverpool and their magic in Europe!

Paul Scholes: Knows what it takes to win the Champions League

Paul Scholes: Knows what it takes to win the Champions League

Champions League winner Paul Scholes believes Liverpool could be a good outside bet to win this season's competition.

Liverpool, the five-times European champions, are returning to the elite event this season after a five-year absence.

The Merseysiders begin their campaign on Tuesday by hosting Bulgarian champions Ludogorets and will also play holders Real Madrid and Swiss side Basel in Group B.

Scholes, a member of the Manchester United side that won the 2008 final, expects Anfield to be a tough place for visiting sides.

The 39-year-old, speaking in his role as a pundit for ITV's Champions League coverage, said: "Liverpool are the dark horse of the competition this year.

"Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job. The style of play he's adopted is exciting to watch and the players seem to have taken to him. I feel they will do well with the players they have.

"The big advantage they have is a home crowd. Anfield is always a hostile place to go, which is something Manchester City lack."

Liverpool qualified for the Champions League after a superb 2013-14 campaign in which they finished close runners-up to Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League.

Since then they have lost their talisman Luis Suarez to Barcelona, but Scholes thinks Mario Balotelli could prove a good replacement.

Speaking about Suarez, Scholes said: "He's a great player, but don't forget they've signed Balotelli who, on his day, can be a match winner too."

City are hoping to make a greater impression in Europe this season after reclaiming the Premier League crown.

They reached the knockout stages for the first time last term and Scholes believes going further will be manager Manuel Pellegrini's top priority.

City begin their campaign against 2013 winners Bayern Munich on Wednesday and also face CSKA Moscow and Roma.

He said: "Champions League will be their main focus for the season. Their owners will want to see them push on in the Champions League.

"They have a tough group this year, but with the players they have they need to go on to win it, and there's really little excuse not to do well."

Scholes doubts whether Arsenal, who face Borussia Dortmund, Anderlecht and Galatasaray, will have the fortitude to seriously challenge for the trophy.

He said: "They always qualify and always seem to get through the group. The only problem with Arsenal is when they meet top teams, they don't seem to have the consistent level of mental strength to get through it."

Chelsea have made a strong start to the season in the Premier League and Scholes thinks the domestic title might be Jose Mourinho's priority.

He said: "Whilst The Champions League is the ultimate trophy for any club team, I believe Chelsea's main objective is winning the Premier League this season.

"If you ask Jose Mourinho what you'd rather win now, I think the answer would be the Premier League."

United failed to qualify for the Champions League this season and, despite their stature, Scholes is not sure the competition will miss his former club.

He said: "Maybe, but there's still a lot of major clubs in it.

"Let's just hope it's one year, you have to earn the right to be in it and they haven't done that for this season."

Jordan Henderson is the new vice-captain of Liverpool, it was confirmed late on Monday night.

The 24-year-old is promoted to Steven Gerrard‘s understudy following the departure of Daniel Agger this summer.

Since signing from Sunderland in 2011, Henderson has made 136 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 13 goals and established himself as a mainstay of the Reds’ midfield.

The news will come as no surprise to many supporters who have seen a solid leadership evolve from Henderson during his time on Merseyside.

“Jordan is someone who represents the best values of what we are all about, as a team and as a club,” Rodgers is quoted on the club’s official website as saying.

“Both he and Steven are examples to others in how they conduct themselves on and off the pitch. It’s how they live their lives, it’s how they train and it’s how they approach their work.

“Jordan is completely dedicated to the game and his leadership qualities come from the example he sets. It’s another great story for Jordan in his journey as a Liverpool player and it shows the great progress he has made.

“For club and country he holds himself really well, he’s got great stature and I believe he will be an important player here for years to come.”

Only last month England international Henderson spoke of how “leadership comes in different ways”.

“I try to help people as much as I can,” he told LiverpoolFC.com

“Whether that is giving them confidence or instruction, I try to do as much as I can to help the team. I think that’s important sometimes.”

The news comes on the eve of Liverpool’s first Champions League game in almost five years. They face Ludogorets of Bulgairia at Anfield on Tuesday night at 7.45pm.

Brendan Rodgers addressed a room of press at Melwood on Monday afternoon to preview Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Ludogorets at Anfield (7.45pm kick-off).

On being back in the Champions League

“We’re very excited to be in the Champions League. Five years is a long time to be out of it for a club like Liverpool.

“Our overriding objective first of all is to qualify and come out of the group. We’ll take it one game at a time and aim for three points.

“Ludogorets will be a tough game for us, like al games at this level. They play an open, attacking style of football.

“They’re a team that attack and want to do well. They’re a top team. But it’s more about ourselves.”

On improving Liverpool’s performance

“We need to up the tempo of our game, press more and that will ignite the crowd at Anfield, who have been brilliant since I got here.

“We need to be better defensively. We were disappointed at the weekend. When you dominate but don’t score, you at least want a point.

“We need to give some time for the new players to play cohesively. Our emphasis will always be positive, but we need to tighten up.”

On how Mario Balotelli was treated by Aston Villa’s defenders

“There’s no complaints from me about Mario Balotelli’s treatment against Aston Villa. We ask players to work hard, but be fair.”

On team news for Tuesday night

“Martin Skrtel joined the group yesterday, he’s working hard but won’t be back from injury yet. He should be back for West Ham.”

On what being back in the Champions League means for the club

“The club has been away from the Champions League for too long. My main priority was to get the club back to this level.

“Liverpool are one of the footballing greats of world football and the Champions League is the elite competition.

“A few supporters have been in my office this last week and they’re really looking forward to traveling Europe again and the big games. That’s why we do all this — for the supporters.

“The key for us is building a top four sustainable club. Everyone wants to work at the elite level, and the Champions League is that.”

On the squad’s experience and youth

Steven Gerrard has a great record in this competition, and the young players are going to gain valuable experience playing in it.

“We’ve got no fear of the competition. We’ll impose our style, our way of working and playing. We’ve done that and continue to do so.

“Balotelli is working very hard, he was unfortunate to be ill last week. It was only matchday he declared himself fit to play.

“Balotelli is arguably one of the most experienced players we have at the highest level. He’s relishing the responsibility and works hard.”

On Ludogorets

“Ludogorets’ emphasis is on attacking football. But I only worry about ourselves. We’re used to starting games quickly.

“But it’s important that if we don’t get an early goal, we know how to avoid conceding, go forward, invent and penetrate.

“Ludogorets have done very well to qualify for the group stages and they’ll be excited about coming to the iconic stadium of Anfield.

“Ludogorets signed a goalkeeper last night, we’ve got our guys working on who could play against us. We’re prepared.”

On pride

“It’s an honour to lead such a great club in the Champions League.”

13 days. 13 days we had to wait. 13 days after swatting aside a decent Spurs side at White Hart Lane, the Reds were finally back in action.

I actually wasn’t that bothered about this international break, heading into it. Which is rare. I could see some benefits for us. It would give our injured players a chance to step up their recovery, while not missing any games.

Stevie, now retired from England duty, could kick back somewhere sunny too, topping up his tan and (perhaps more significantly) his energy. Heading into a break on the back of a win always helps as well.

It actually seemed quite necessary.

But no, it was as soul-crushing as usual. Probably even more so. Our chief tormentor, Roy Hodgson, did what he does best – ruins our lives.

He decided to test Daniel Sturridge’s resolve again, playing the Reds’ number 15 for the entirety of a friendly against Norway. A vital friendly. Dan came through it, but Roy wasn’t done yet. A hamstring injury in training. Up to three weeks out.

Then Hodgson came worryingly close to achieving the impossible: injuring Jordan Henderson. Audacious. Luckily Hendo was having none of it and he recovered in time for England’s game in Switzerland.

Then there was big Emre Can, who rolled his ankle playing for Germany Under-21s, and could now face six weeks out according to Brendan. Just as he was finding his feet.

Joe Allen also picked up a knock, after playing 90 minutes in Andorra on a pitch that resembled an allotment – a vacant, sad allotment.

Oh, and mad Mario murdered a Wolves player during a practice match at Melwood. Or something like that.

The international break – as deplorable as ever.

Anyway, the Reds were back playing football on Saturday, and everything was going to be great. Just as Hodgson was departing our minds though, Paul Lambert arrived at Anfield with his Aston Villa side.

Like Hodgson, Lambert seems to have decided his mission in football is to depress Liverpool fans. I’m sick of him prancing up and down the Anfield touchline after a goal for his team, saluting the traveling supporters. Piss off Paul. Brendan should be prancing.

From the moment Gabby Agbonlahor put Villa ahead early on in this one, it seemed obvious nothing was going to change. There was an inevitability about it. They get their noses in front and build a metaphorical brick wall. A brick wall that we run into time and time again.

I take the blame for the goal, by the way. We’ve actually defended set-pieces reasonably well in recent times, contrary to popular narrative. And I attribute this to the fact I shout ‘Out!’ as the ball is flying into our box. It’s worked remarkably well. I didn’t do it this time; I wasn’t on my game. That’s why we conceded, and ultimately lost the game. That, and the fact Dejan Lovren has clearly spent far too much time hanging around (playing wrestling) with Martin Skrtel.

Our shambolic set-piece defending wasn’t the only thing that contributed to us coming out of this one empty handed though. In attack, we looked disjointed. This was perhaps no surprise, as of our offensive quadrant, only Philippe Coutinho had more than a single start for us.

Raheem Sterling got a rest, which I could see a smidgen of logic in given that we had a Champions League game a few days later. But, to take another angle, is he really needed against Ludogorets? Would it not have been better to play him against Villa and rest him on Tuesday?

This is all hindsight though, I know. I certainly wasn’t moaning about our side when I saw it. Besides, we’re not privy to the information Brendan and the rest of the coaching staff have. Perhaps Raheem wasn’t 100% after returning from England duty (likely) and thus leaving him on the bench here seemed the rational thing to do.

Of the new boys that started, I thought they each did quite well. Both full-backs were impressive again, tirelessly offering a wide attacking outlet and tracking back briskly when we lost possession.

Further forward, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Mario Balotelli all showed glimpses of quality, but none of the three are fully up to match sharpness. To be fair to them, I think our inability to break Villa down stemmed from our lack of cohesion as a team, and not the individuals themselves.

There will of course be those ‘supporters’ who wearily harp on about Luis Suarez, and how much we miss him. They were out in full force on Saturday evening, I’m sure, groaning with unnecessary scorn and vigour into their beverages.

If you are one of those people, I implore you to wait and see. You may not have picked up on the positives from Saturday, but they were there I assure you. Anyway, Suarez wouldn’t have improved us at all yesterday. I guarantee you. I can guarantee you because he’d have been watching from the stands, suspended.

The Champions League is back at Anfield on Tuesday. Stop drowning in self-pity and take that in. The Champions League. Back at Anfield. On Tuesday.
