It is currently the off season for the WSL, which sees a new look and news teams when it resumes in March.

Matt Beard’s Liverpool Ladies are the current champions and Beard was delighted to welcome Davison to his squad on Tuesday.

“Gemma is a fantastic signing for us,” Beard told the club’s official website. “She is a strong, talented player who has a great deal of experience and knowledge of the game.

“Her addition will add strength to the team, which will be vital for us going into a challenging season and the Champions League.”

The 26-year-old has played in the Womens’ Professional Soccer League in the USA, where she played for New York Magic, Chicago Red Eleven, Buffalo Flash, Western New York Flash and Sky Blue FC, before return to Arsenal Ladies.

She received her first and only England cap when she came on as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Iceland back in 2009.

Davison is relishing the new opportunities in front of her at Liverpool.

She told the club’s official website, “I am excited to embrace a new challenge with Liverpool Ladies and I am delighted to be a part of the squad that will be defending the title.

“There are so many talented players here that I am looking forward to playing alongside.”

Adam Griffies (@whatahitsonlfc) responds to Sunday’s victory over Tottenham with glee as Liverpool go from strength to strength.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Jon Flanagan celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sunday was real. Everything that happened, did happen. And so, Liverpool are a win over Cardiff (and Arsenal not beating Chelsea) away from sitting at the top of the Premier League tree on Christmas Day for the first time since 2008. Monday morning has never felt so good.

Now seems like a good time to offer my own post-match viewpoint.

Normally I feel the need to pinpoint one observation from a game, often tactical, and magnify it, making relative points. But yesterday’s match spawned so many talking points, and it would be impossible to link them all in a flowing report. So I’m not going to.

And quite frankly, riding on the crest of 5-0-away-at-Spurs shaped wave, nobody cares.

Team Selection

I was relieved not to see a return to a back three, after it being strongly rumoured on Friday night, due to Spurs’ threat down the wings.

It seemed too obvious; Rodgers couldn’t be so naïve could he? No, I shouldn’t have doubted him. The subtle selection of a 4-3-3 system was the first of many touches of brilliance, from our manager and players, on the day.

Deploying three central midfielders – Lucas, Allen and Henderson – helped us, not just cope with, but overrun, Tottenham’s midfield: arguably the most physically imposing midfield in the Premier League.

Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson pressed tirelessly and intelligently, shielding Lucas, who controlled proceedings from a deeper position relatively competently.

Jordan Henderson

Henderson, almost comical in his energy and determination, was brilliant throughout. A clever flick to assist Luis Suarez’s opening goal, and a well taken volley soon after, was the catalyst for the 23-year-old to turn in his best performance in a red shirt since arriving at the club in 2011.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson in action against Tottenham Hotspur's Mossa Dembele during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

His 78 touches of the ball, the most of any player on the pitch, highlighted his constant involvement. Should he continue to develop at the rate he currently is, the £16m acquirement of Henderson 30 months ago by Kenny Dalglish, could prove to be a shrewd piece of business.

Joe Allen

Henderson’s partner in crime – Allen – grabbed less acclaim, but was possibly just as good. Whilst doing a similar job off the ball, pushing Spurs back with incessant pressing, Allen had less licence than his consort to join attacks.

Though he did roam forwards at times, he was noticeably selective of his runs and the more disciplined of the two.

Allen’s importance to us was portrayed by the fact he made eight tackles, twice the amount of anyother player on the pitch. Forget the Welsh Xavi; the Welsh Mascherano seems more fitting.

Absence of Steven Gerrard

All the talk pre-match had been about the absence of our captain Steven Gerrard. ‘How would Liverpool cope?’ gulped some fans and the majority of the cliché-stricken media.

The answer was, as I predicted in my match preview, incredibly well. Our midfield trio were more cohesive and fluid, and seemed to thrive under the heightened responsibility placed on their shoulders without their skipper being present.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not necessarily lobbying for Gerrard to be dropped; I’m just not convinced we are getting the best out of him, and more importantly, the team, in his current role.

And I’m far from on a limb with my opinion; the likes of @DaveHendrickTLW, @Kopology and @liverpooldeep have been relentlessly pounding the subject since the beginning of time. They are all worth a follow on Twitter by the way.

Luis Suarez

Next I’ll talk about Luis Suarez, because it’s incredibly hard not to. Strip your lack of surprise and the rest of the events from yesterday back, and you have two devilishly cunning, sublime finishes from the most lethal striker in world football at the moment.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Luis Suarez celebrates scoring the fourth goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

His goals per game ratio this season is 1.55, comfortably the best on the continent, and better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s during each of their most prolific ever campaigns (1.22 and 1.09).

Just in case your jaw isn’t quite touching the floor yet, carry on reading. Suarez has 17 goals in 11 appearances in 2013/14, more than 10 Premier League teams have managed, despite him missing our first five games of the season. Ridiculous.

Taking Control

Another positive yesterday was our composure and increased control of proceedings when Spurs went down to 10 men.

Paulinho’s red card, at 2-0, didn’t automatically signal the end of the game; so often you see teams creep back into matches after getting a man sent off, largely because of their opposition’s complacency.

We kept the ball expertly, dragging the home side about the pitch, creating gaps to pick with simple through balls. Rodgers executed this plan brilliantly, replacing Lucas with Luis Alberto in the 79th minute.

At this stage, the game was tailor-made for the young Spanish creator, and fittingly he chipped a clever ball through to Suarez for our fourth goal: Alberto’s first Premier League assist.

There was also a substitute appearance for Victor Moses late on, which I liked. Although having failed to shine in a Liverpool shirt so far, the Nigerian clearly possesses talent, and I have a feeling Rodgers introduced him in an attempt to get him a goal and perhaps get a few fans on side.

Jon Flanagan / aka Roberto Carlos

Finally a mention for Roberto Carlos. I thought he performed admirably yesterday, as he has done since he’s returned to the side.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Jon Flanagan celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Okay, he was passed once or twice by Aaron Lennon, but you can almost expect and accept that from a full-back with such attacking flair. After all, what a finish. Well played Roberto.

Not a bad day at the office was it?

Luis Suarez was awarded the Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year last night at a glitzy award ceremony in North London.

Suarez was one of few players who turned out for the event at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium to accept his award and speak to fans and media.

Henry Winter of the Telegraph, who was awarded the Football Writer of the Year award, wrote how he felt humbled by the Uruguayan international’s appearance:

Suárez must have felt after all the criticism he has received that this was a night of acceptance, of redemption.

Mind you, Mr. Winter, maybe it was a night for redemption for more than one person. This is the same writer who labelled Suarez a “toxic cheat” in the summer, but cosied up for photographs to share the night with the 26-year-old anyway.

Winter adds:

Even if some allowance is made for Liverpool fans’ noted assiduousness in campaigning, Suárez’s success also highlights further the forgiveness of the football fan. He caused brief outrage when attempting to leave Anfield in the summer.

After a controversial year for Suarez, he accepted the award and gave thanks to Liverpool fans for welcoming him back at Anfield with open arms following a long-term suspension.

He is quoted by Sporting Life as saying, “After so many difficult moments for me I was able to win the supporters back, and that was unbelievable when I came back to play.

“They helped me, and that was important for me, for my confidence, and for my family, because they are together with me in this.

“It’s very special for me (the award) because my hard work on the pitch is recognised.

“Everybody knows about my problems and my difficult year, but after that I forgot everything and have been able to get back on the pitch.”

Suarez is now the league’s top scorer this season with 17 goals in just 11 appearances, and Liverpool can go top of the table with a win at home to Cardiff City next Saturday.

Asked about Liverpool’s title chances, Suarez added, “Liverpool are starting to reach their potential and we can play our best on the pitch.

“It’s very important that we stay together, we keep going, this is very important.

“If Liverpool don’t have these players I cannot continue my level, because it’s too much.

“They know I am important, so they try everything to stay together, that’s important for me, but it’s more important for the club.”

Okay, he was passed once or twice by Aaron Lennon, but you can almost expect and accept that from a full-back with such attacking flair. After all, what a finish. Well played Roberto.

Not a bad day at the office was it?

Liverpool 5—0: Riding the wave with Liverpool’s new Roberto Carlos

Unknown   at  16:34  No comments

Adam Griffies (@whatahitsonlfc) responds to Sunday’s victory over Tottenham with glee as Liverpool go from strength to strength.

The late Hillsborough justice campaigner Anne Williams was paid tribute to during Sunday night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony.

Anne was at the forefront of battling for a new inquest to be held for her 15-year-old son Kevin, who died at Hillsborough in 1989.

She found witnesses who heard Kevin say “Mum” at 4.00pm that fateful day, 45 minutes after original inquest into the disaster had claimed he was dead by.

Her bravery and enduring love was recognised when the Helen Rollason Award was accepted on her behalf by her daughter Sara, son Michael, and brother Danny.

“My mum embodied the very reason this award was created – strength, determination and passion,” said Sara.

“Her tireless campaigning was driven by the love she had for her son Kevin and her dedication to seeking a new inquest,” added Sara. “If anyone triumphed over adversity, it’s my mum.”

Anne died aged 60 in April 2013.

Jack Lusby explains how Brendan Rodgers got Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham on Sunday tactically spot on, and calls for optimistic caution going forward.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Tottenham Hotspur's manager Andre Villas-Boas during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Following Liverpool’s supreme 5-0 victory over Spurs at White Hart Lane on Saturday, Brendan Rodgers praised his side’s “most complete performance” of his Liverpool reign.

In a game where the team enjoyed almost wholesale dominance the Northern Irishman’s approach and philosophy seemed vindicated.

This result provides the perfect platform for the difficult weeks ahead: instilling a belief that Liverpool can not only perform away from home, but also do so in the bigger games.

This represents a growth in Brendan Rodgers’ tactical approach to games, and in this article I will look at how Rodgers got the big decisions right coming into this particular fixture.

A Defensive Partnership

Much has been made of Rodgers’ flirtation with several different defensive partnerships throughout this season, and with the projected return of Daniel Agger to the selection fold many would have assumed his inclusion was a given.

However, Rodgers stuck with the partnership of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho who performed so impressively during the previous weekend’s win over West Ham.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel in action against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Martin Skrtel continued his resurgence following his Carragher-prompted exile from the first team fold last season with another dominant performance. Whilst Sakho, described as a “marquee signing” by Ian Ayre upon his arrival, has grown in stature since his shaky debut against Swansea.

The duo’s performance provided Liverpool with an assured presence amongst the back four.

Sakho in particular impressed as the hapless Spurs failed to manage a single shot on target. According to Squakwa, his average of 75% of duals won throughout the game came second only to the omnipresent Jordan Henderson.

With the pair repaying Rodgers’ faith, it seems that this decision was hugely successful, and may prove to be a platform for stability in the coming games in a tough December schedule.

The Midfield Trio

In my pre-Spurs article ‘3 Options for Liverpool’s Gerrard-less Midfield’ I wrote about the problems Liverpool may face in replacing the previously ever-present captain.

The most likely option was the trio of Joe Allen, Lucas Leiva and Jordan Henderson, of which were likely to lack authority.

Brendan Rodgers plumped for the trio, and they showed authority in spades. Allen and Lucas, whilst impressive, were side-lined by the imperious Jordan Henderson.

In Gerrard’s absence, Henderson showed a mental growth to more than atone for the need for an authoritative voice in the centre. In an infographic produced by LFC’s Twitter account after the game, Henderson boasts a passing accuracy of over 92%, and a 100% tackling success.

For all the talk of a January reinforcement of the midfield, Rodgers may have a ready-made general in his midst.

A Captaincy Quandary

With speculation rife in the latter half of the week that Daniel Agger would not be starting against Spurs, and with the obvious absence of Steven Gerrard to contend with, much debate was made of who would be appointed captain for this fixture.

Eventually, it was announced that Luis Suarez would captain the side.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's captain Luis Suarez in action against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Whilst it could’ve been argued that his past dalliances with bad behaviour should go against this decision, the Uruguayan repaid Rodgers’ choice with a true captain’s performance.

Continuing his rich vein of form, Suarez scored and provided with aplomb in the 5-0 mauling, with a hand in every goal.

His sumptuous lob over a stretched Hugo Lloris may be lauded as yet another goal of the season contender, but his assists were just as commendable.

Whilst in seasons previous, Luis Suarez could be criticised for having a measure of greed to his game, the way in which he found both Raheem Sterling and Jon Flanagan for their respective strikes displayed a growing maturity to the striker’s game.

Chasing another hat-trick, Suarez would’ve been forgiven for attempting shots, but his provision represents a flourishing team ethic.

This is something which Rodgers’ choice of captain emphasised in his post-match interview:

“It was no different, because for me, there is only one captain here at Liverpool and that is Stevie”

“[T]oday the most important thing was the performance of the team…when Flanno scored, it was a happy moment for us.”

(LiverpoolFC.com)

Whilst underplaying his own role as captain, the striker showed great maturity in his stressing of the result as a team effort. His singling out of Jon Flanagan for praise displays qualities of leadership and the paternal mentality required in a successful captaincy.

As Sakho and Skrtel have proved their worth as Liverpool’s bona fide centre back partnership, Suarez may enjoy a continued run as team captain in the absence of Agger and Gerrard.

Conclusion

Although it is right to revel in the joys of a significant win over one of their direct rivals, Liverpool must remain cautionary in the fixtures to come if they are to continue their impressive form.

For all of their dominance, Skrtel and Sakho were blessed with a baffling selection of Aaron Lennon and Nacer Chadli on the flanks serving to isolate the increasingly abject Roberto Soldado in attack.

Jordan Henderson’s best performance in a Liverpool shirt, impossible to detract from, was helped significantly by the early injury to Sandro and Paulinho’s red card.

Moreover, Étienne Capoue essentially handed Luis Suarez the reins with a spineless performance at the heart of the Spurs defence.

Cardiff, Manchester City and Chelsea may not roll over so easily, but for now this “most complete performance” is cause for much optimism.

Thrashing Spurs; or How Brendan Rodgers Got the Big Decisions Right
