Liverpool host Manchester United on Sunday in a fixture which is likely prove crucial in the battle for fourth place. Here, Press Association Sport looks at some of the main talking points in the build up to the match.

WILL STEVEN GERRARD PLAY?

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, September 19, 2010: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard MBE celebrates scoring his, and side's, second goal against Manchester United by kissing the television steady cam during the Premiership match at Old Trafford. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Gerrard has enjoyed many tussles with United during his 17-year career at Liverpool, but he is no longer guaranteed a place in the starting XI.

The Liverpool captain was left out of the team that beat Swansea 1-0 on Monday, but came off the bench just after the hour.

Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen have looked good in the middle during Gerrard’s absence, so Brendan Rodgers is facing a dilemma. Does he give Gerrard one last crack at United before he departs for the MLS or stick with the midfield which has served him so well during the skipper’s absence?

ARE LIVERPOOL STRONG ENOUGH AT THE BACK TO COPE WITH UNITED?

That would have been a strange question a few weeks ago, when United looked weak in attack, but they were impressively clinical in their 3-0 win over Tottenham last weekend.

Wayne Rooney grabbed the headlines after his knockout goal celebration but Marouane Fellaini was equally as destructive during the match.

The Belgian, playing in the number 10 role, caused Spurs all sorts of problems with his height and strength and he took his goal superbly. Liverpool will have to keep him quiet to stop United.

WAS UNITED’S WIN OVER SPURS JUST A FLASH IN THE PAN?

Eight months after promising everything would soon click into place, Louis van Gaal’s team finally put on a performance last weekend that had all the hallmarks of a victory of the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

United played with pace, flair, width and brutality in front of goal against a team that is also fighting for a top-four finish.

The challenge for Van Gaal now is to ensure his team put on a repeat performance at the home of their bitter rivals.

WILL UNITED KEEP THEIR DISCIPLINE?

One of the key issues for Van Gaal in big matches like this is discipline. He thinks it is vitally important to keep all 11 players on the pitch.

Unfortunately for him, when United went to Manchester City last November, Chris Smalling did not get the memo. The defender earned a second yellow card in the 39th minute for a reckless tackle on James Milner and United lost to a City team which was there for the taking.

Angel di Maria was also sent off in the recent FA Cup defeat to Arsenal. Van Gaal will remind his players they need to stay on the pitch, but will they listen?

HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE DI MARIA?

Di Maria missed the victory over Spurs because of his dismissal against Arsenal, and if truth be told, United did not miss him one bit.

Van Gaal’s team looked far more destructive with Juan Mata wide on the right. The Spaniard carved open the Spurs defence on many occasions and he relished his physical battle with Danny Rose.

Van Gaal has put a lot of trust in Di Maria even though his form has deteriorated rapidly since the end of September, but can he really drop Mata for the £59.7million man?

Ward, a former Wales youth international, has been on the Liverpool bench 19 times this season and has now joined Shrimps to ease their goalkeeping crisis following Andreas Arestidou’s suspension.

He is expected to be given his debut in Saturday’s trip to Carlisle, with Morecambe looking to get a win after back-to-back home defeats to Hartlepool and Shrewsbury.

Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley said: “Danny is a highly regarded young goalkeeper and we look forward to working with him over the next few weeks.”

Ward, 21, joined Liverpool from Wrexham in 2012 but has yet to feature for the first team at Anfield.

Liverpool have the chance to leapfrog arch rivals Manchester United into fourth place when the two sides meet in a mouthwatering encounter in the Premier League at Anfield this Sunday.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United

Sunday, 22nd March 2015; 1.30pm kick-off

Premier League

Anfield

Going into the weekend’s fixtures, Brendan Rodgers‘ side sit fifth in the league table — just one point behind United, three points off third placed Arsenal and four points off second placed Man City, setting up a crucial clash for both sides.

Liverpool will be looking to avenge a 3-0 defeat at the hands of United in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in December.

That was Liverpool’s last league defeat and the form book would suggest the hosts are favourites this Sunday — with 10 victories and three draws in their last 13 games, scoring 24 and conceding just eight.

If Liverpool can avoid defeat, they will match Chelsea’s current season record of 14 games undefeated.

However, Man Utd’s league form isn’t far behind, with just five defeats all season and off the back of a three-game winning streak. Sunderland, Newcastle Utd and Tottenham were their victims.

Despite Liverpool’s recent good fortunes, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has urged his teammates to stay focussed ahead of Sunday’s encounter and the race to finish in the top four.

“We have to focus on our jobs, we can’t get carried away, and as a game it is three points to win or to lose,” he is quoted in the Mirror as saying.

“If we are going to make more of it than it is we might get flustered or carried away with things so we have to address it in a professional manner and make sure we focus on our job rather than what the opponent does or how big a game it is.”

Liverpool could welcome back Steven Gerrard to the starting XI after he returned from injury as a substitute in Monday night’s 1-0 win at Swansea.

Lucas Leiva returned to training this week but looks set to miss Sunday’s clash, whilst Jordon Ibe is also sidelined.

If you’ve never played The Football Pools , it’s easy. You can now play online, so there’s no pools man knocking at your door or paper coupons to fill in.

You simply select 10 games from 49 that you think may end in a score draw. Each score draw is worth 3 points, 2 for a no score draw, and 1 point for a Home, or Away win. All the points from your best 8 selections are added together with scores of 24,23 and 22 winning a cash prize.

It’s £1 to play, but if you sign up for a Direct Debit your first 4 games are free , with no obligation to carry on playing beyond your free games.

Michael Carrick: Stats highlight his importance to United

Michael Carrick: Stats highlight his importance to United

We have stats ahead of every Premier League game, including details of a possible Liverpool record and Michael Carrick's importance to Man Utd.

The big game this weekend sees fifth-placed Liverpool host fourth-placed Manchester United at Anfield, with Southampton and Tottenham no doubt looking to capitalise on any slip-ups in their home games against struggling Burnley and Leicester respectively.

Manchester City will want to see off West Brom in Saturday's early game to put pressure on table-topping Chelsea, who travel to Hull on Sunday, while Arsenal go to Newcastle as they look to rein in the top two.

We look at the Opta statistics ahead of the 30th round of fixtures...

Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion

Manchester City have won nine and lost none of the last 10 Premier League games against West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom have won none of their seven trips to the Etihad Stadium, drawing the first two and losing the last five in a row.

Sergio Aguero has scored four goals in five Premier League appearances against West Brom.

City have scored four goals inside the first 10 minutes in their last three Premier League games against West Brom.

The Baggies have gone nine Premier League away games without a victory (W0 D5 L4).

City have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League home matches (W8 D3 L1).

West Brom have kept four clean sheets in their last five Premier League matches.

The Baggies have conceded more goals in the opening 15 minutes of matches than any other side this season (10).

However, West Brom have conceded the fewest goals in the final 15 minutes of games (4).

West Brom have scored the highest percentage of goals from set pieces excluding penalties in the top flight this season (50%) while City have scored the lowest proportion (8%).

Aston Villa v Swansea City

Swansea City have lost just one of their seven Premier League meetings with Aston Villa (W3 D3 L1).

Christian Benteke has scored in two of his three Premier League appearances against Swansea City.

Gabriel Agbonlahor has scored in two of his last three Premier League appearances against Swansea City.

Aston Villa ended a run of six home Premier League games without a win (W0 D3 L3) with victory last time out against West Brom.

Swansea's last three Premier League away wins have all been by a 1-0 scoreline.

All six of Gabriel Agbonlahor's Premier League goals this season have come inside the opening 37 minutes.

Villa have scored more goals in their last two Premier League matches (6) than they managed in the previous 13 (5).

Aston Villa have scored the highest proportion of first half goals in the top division this season (79%).

No Villa manager has won three Premier League games in a row since Martin O'Neill in April 2010.

Only Everton (17) have dropped more points from winning positions than Swansea City this season (16).

Newcastle United v Arsenal

Arsenal are unbeaten in the last eight Premier League games against Newcastle, winning the last six in a row.

The Gunners are the only team ever to not win a Premier League game after being 4-0 up at half-time, when they drew 4-4 with Newcastle at St James Park in February 2011.

Newcastle have failed to score in their last three Premier League home matches against the Gunners.

Olivier Giroud has netted six goals in five Premier League appearances against the Magpies.

Liverpool have again been linked with perennial tabloid transfer favourite, Arsenal forward Theo Walcott.

According to John Cross of the Mirror Liverpool are interested in bringing Arsenal’s Theo Walcott to Anfield.

Cross writes: “Liverpool are eyeing a shock summer move for Theo Walcott if he cannot agree a new contract at Arsenal.

“Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is a big admirer of England star Walcott and is monitoring developments closely.

“Walcott, 26, has 15 months left on his current deal with the Gunners and has yet to regain his regular first-team place since his return from injury.”

This move would see Rodgers renew reported interested from Walcott’s last Gunners contract impasse and, according to Cross, remains the Reds’ contingency plan in light of protracted talks with Raheem Sterling over a new deal at Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling looks dejected against FC Basel during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

“The Sterling stand-off will only increase Liverpool’s interest in Walcott, as even Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted that he expects drawn-out negotiations.

“Rodgers sees the value in pace to his team and Walcott, like Sterling, has electric speed.”

Interestingly, Cross refers purely to Walcott’s pace, as that was long considered the England international’s only notable attribute—all pace, no end product.

Walcott has developed his game somewhat in recent years, and has improved his finishing ability hugely, as well as his movement between the lines and into the box.

However, is this not reminiscent of Sterling at Liverpool in the last year — a player who is six years Walcott’s junior?

Moreover, is Walcott as multi-faceted as the 20-year-old Sterling, whose defensive ability lends him perfectly to Rodgers’ high-intensity pressing system?

With Sterling reportedly looking for a deal in the region of £100,000 to £150,000 per week, it is important to note that Walcott’s current deal at Arsenal is, according to BBC Sport in 2013, “worth £100,000 a week.”

It is highly unlikely that Walcott would be looking for a decrease in his current salary, even if he moved to his widely reported boyhood club.

So Liverpool would be in exactly the same situation as they are with Sterling at present, with a first-team forward demanding north of £100,000 per week—except one is 26 and one is 20, with the latter arguably a more well-rounded, high-quality player even at this juncture.

Which deal makes more sense?

Sense is something that may well not have come into this report of course, as the notorious Cross is one of Luis Suarez to Arsenal fame:

At least this ridiculous link is out of the way early; next up, Karim Benzema, Arda Turan and Pedro…

After Theo Walcott, which other perennial Liverpool transfer links can we look forward to this summer? Let us know your “favourite” in the comments below.

Liverpool face Man United in a potentially pivotal Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday. Henry Jackson selects his combined XI between the two sides based only on their 2014/15 form.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 14, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson in action against Manchester United during the Premier League match at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sunday’s showdown promises to be a tense, feisty affair, and may well go a long way to deciding who finishes in the top four at the end of the season.

There have been some terrific performers for both teams throughout the campaign, but some of the more high-profile names have struggled.

Steven Gerrard has been up and down as age has caught up with him, Daniel Sturridge has struggled since returning from injury and Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao have not come close to reaching the heights many expected of them.

So who has been the pick of the bunch? Here’s our combined XI between the two biggest rivals in English football, based on this season’s form (3-4-3 formation):

Goalkeeper: David de Gea

On current form, there is definitely an argument to say that De Gea is the world’s best goalkeeper, given how often he is called upon compared to Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois. He has make 2.7 saves per game this season.

The Spaniard has been far and away United’s standout player this season, making some truly remarkable saves and keeping them in matches. They are probably six or seven points better off because of him.

Simon Mignolet has had an unbelievable turnaround in fortunes since the turn of the year, but despite this, he is still not on the same level as De Gea right now.

Centre-Back: Emre Can

MADRID, SPAIN - Tuesday, November 4, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Can was a relative unknown to many when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but he has been a revelation on the right-hand side of Liverpool’s back-three.

The 21-year-old has all the attributes to become a world-class footballer in the future- pace, power, excellent technique and a good reading of the game- and has been the best of Brendan Rodgers‘ summer purchases.

Centre-Back: Martin Skrtel

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 21, 2014: Liverpool's Martin Skrtel celebrates scoring the second goal against Arsenal during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Skrtel didn’t start the campaign in impressive form, mainly due to being played alongside the hapless Dejan Lovren, but he has been magnificent in the last three months or so.

The Slovakian has blossomed since Rodgers deployed three at the back, making countless blocks, interceptions and clearances. He is a big reason for the Reds’ six away clean-sheets in succession in the league.

Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have impressed at times for the Red Devils but found themselves in and out of Louis van Gaal’s side because of injury.

Centre-Back: Mamadou Sakho

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho in action against Middlesbrough during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There are some who still bizarrely see Sakho as some sort of weak-link who can’t pass properly, but it is a total myth.

The 25-year-old Frenchman has been colossal at times since finding a way back into the team late last year, enjoying a pass completion rate of 89 per cent and winning more than half of his average duels.

He could become one of the Premier League’s best defenders over the next couple of years.

Right Wing-Back: Jordan Henderson

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, March 4, 2015: Liverpool's captain Jordan Henderson celebrates scoring the first goal against Burnley during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Clearly Henderson is at his best in the centre of midfield, but given the inconsistency of Lazar Markovic and Antonio Valencia, the Liverpool vice-captain would do better than both in the role currently.

The 24-year-old is in particularly sparking form at the moment, scoring three goals in as many games, and his all-round influence both on and off the pitch is growing by the week. Surely Liverpool’s next captain.

Centre Midfield: Lucas Leiva

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva in action against Chelsea during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Because of his injury troubles of late, it’s very easy to forget just how influential Lucas was to Liverpool’s turnaround in fortunes at the end of 2014.

The 28-year-old came back into the side and gave the midfield much-needed defensive cover, as well as an element of calm and composure. He may struggle to get his place back following Joe Allen‘s recent resurgence, but his earlier excellence should not be forgotten.

Centre Midfield: Daley Blind

There have been many United players who simply haven’t performed this season, but Blind certainly goes down as one of their success stories in 2014/15.

The Holland international is a classy footballer, both in midfield and at left-back, using the ball effectviely and showing a good positional sense.

His late equalisers at both West Brom and West Ham highlighted his never-say-die attitude, and could prove vital come the end of the season.

Left Wing-Back: Ashley Young

Young hasn’t always endured the happiest time at Old Trafford, and having been seemingly surplus to requirements last summer, he has arguably been their best outfield player this season.

The former Watford and Aston Villa winger has looked a threat with his pace and consistent final ball, while defensively he has also been impressive. The last-gasp winner he scored at Newcastle was of huge importance.

Alberto Moreno has been solid but unspectacular, while Luke Shaw has suffered with form and injuries.

Like many Liverpool players, Coutinho did not play to his optimum level during the early stages of the season, but he has been majestic at times in 2015.

The Brazilian has scored stunning goals against Bolton, Southampton and Man City, and his general touch, vision and influence have been a joy to watch. One of the Premier League’s most exciting and naturally gifted players.

Right Forward: Raheem Sterling

So much is expected of Sterling now in every game, given his meteoric rise, but it’s still so easy to forget he is only 20 years of age.

The England starlet is the Reds’ joint-top scorer this season with 10 goals, and his pace and trickery has terrified the country’s best defences. His superb solo effort against Chelsea in the League Cup was a memorable moment.

Di Maria has disappointed greatly, as mentioned, while Juan Mata, Adam Lallana and Adnan Januzaj have not been anywhere near consistent enough.

Striker: Wayne Rooney

Rooney may not exactly be loved by the Liverpool supporters, but it’s impossible to deny that he has been impressive this season.

There is more of a maturity about the United and England captain now, and while Robin van Persie and Falcao have floundered, he has stepped up to the plate in both a midfield role and as a striker, scoring 13 times.

Sturridge remains well short of his best form, while Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have completely failed to set the world alight on Merseyside.

Liverpool vs. Man United – Combined XI based on 2014/15 form

Liverpool face Man United in a potentially pivotal Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday. Henry Jackson selects his combined XI between the two sides based only on their 2014/15 form.

Can was a relative unknown to many when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but he has been a revelation on the right-hand side of Liverpool’s back-three.

The 21-year-old has all the attributes to become a world-class footballer in the future- pace, power, excellent technique and a good reading of the game- and has been the best of Brendan Rodgers‘ summer purchases.

Centre-Back: Martin Skrtel

There are some who still bizarrely see Sakho as some sort of weak-link who can’t pass properly, but it is a total myth.

The 25-year-old Frenchman has been colossal at times since finding a way back into the team late last year, enjoying a pass completion rate of 89 per cent and winning more than half of his average duels.

He could become one of the Premier League’s best defenders over the next couple of years.

Right Wing-Back: Jordan Henderson

Clearly Henderson is at his best in the centre of midfield, but given the inconsistency of Lazar Markovic and Antonio Valencia, the Liverpool vice-captain would do better than both in the role currently.

The 24-year-old is in particularly sparking form at the moment, scoring three goals in as many games, and his all-round influence both on and off the pitch is growing by the week. Surely Liverpool’s next captain.

Centre Midfield: Lucas Leiva

Left Forward: Philippe Coutinho
