Pepe Reina: Now a Bayern Munich player

Pepe Reina: Now a Bayern Munich player

Pepe Reina has completed his transfer from Liverpool to Bayern Munich.

The Spain international goalkeeper, who spent last season on loan at Napoli, has signed a three-year deal with the German champions.

He will provide back-up to Germany international Manuel Neuer at the Allianz Arena.

Reina, who will turn 32 at the end of August, was a regular at Liverpool for eight seasons before Brendan Rodgers signed Belgium's Simon Mignolet from Sunderland last summer.

Rodgers has Brad Jones as cover and sanctioned Reina's temporary move to Napoli last season.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed Reina’s keenness to join the Bundesliga side earlier in the week.

Rummenigge said: "He was eager to come to Bayern Munich. He wanted to embark on this adventure even though he knows that, in Manuel Neuer, he has a keeper in front of him who, if nothing changes, will always remain the number one."

Jose Enrique in action during a pre season friendly against Preston at Deepdale

Jose Enrique in action during a pre season friendly against Preston at Deepdale

Liverpool defender Jose Enrique says he expects to be available for the opening Premier League game of the season at home to Southampton a week on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Spaniard’s 2013-14 season came to a premature end when he had to undergo knee surgery last November.

However, he resumed training in July and was able to join his team-mates on Liverpool’s pre-season tour to the US.

A fit Enrique would be a great help to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had to cope without a specialist left-back at times last season.

Enrique said: “I'm feeling good.

"I was training on my own and running a lot, and it's not the same when you play with a team, because it's a lot more with the ball and a different type of running.

"I'm still getting my fitness back but I feel really good and confident that I can play soon.

"It's little by little, and not just me, everyone is getting their fitness.

“If the manager wants me to play in the first game of the season, I am ready, of course."

Having finished second in the Premier League last season, Liverpool earned a return to the Champions League for the first time in five seasons.

And Enrique added: “Liverpool has been for a while without Champions League.

"I've never played in the Champions League and I'm so excited to play in this competition, because the best teams in the world are in this competition.

“I think Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world, so Liverpool have to be there as well.

"We'll try to go as far as we can but, of course, not forget about the league and the two cups. We have a big squad and we want to compete for everything.

"Hopefully, like the manager says, we can win a trophy. We won one before with Kenny (Dalglish, the Capital One Cup in 2012).

“I know it wasn't a Champions League or a league title but it was really exciting and, for the fans, it's really good to win trophies."

With Champions League football back on the agenda at Anfield, would fourth place represent a successful 2014/15 Premier League finish? Nial Toner discusses.

CHARLOTTE, USA - Saturday, August 2, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers against AC Milan during the International Champions Cup Group B match at the Bank of America Stadium on day thirteen of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After the heroic exploits from the team last season when we came within touching distance of the title, for many fans, the next form of progression would be another title challenge in 2014/15.

While I feel the squad is in much better shape than last year, the loss of Luis Suarez may have taken away that little bit of magic that we needed to go all the way.

Like most fans I watched on last year and dared to dream as Brendan Rodgers led the team, fans and city on what can only be described as a rollercoaster ride. From the turn of the year we saw the best football played by a Liverpool team in modern times and we were disappointed to finish second!

This shows just how far we have come under Rodgers; the fact that we were disappointed with second. For me, this was more down to the way in which we finished second than the fact we actually finished here, but for me it has left one burning question all summer – would 4th place be a disappointment in 2014/15? For me, the answer is simple – NO!

We need some consistency

When I think back to 2009 when we finished 2nd under Rafa Benetiz, we had one of the best sides in Europe and were in a great position to push on as a club. Players like Pepe Reina, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres; we had the basis of a team that should have challenged for the title for many years to come. It wasn’t to be the case though and after losing some key players we managed to drop from finishing 2nd to finishing 7th, and it has been four long, hard seasons to get back up there with the elite.

Having lost Luis Suarez, the important thing for Brendan Rodgers and Co is that we stay in the top 4 this season, so for me, this means our target should be 4th place. A 4th place finish this coming season will be a success in my book; anything less can be seen as a disappointment.

Why 4th place can be seen as a success this year

Like most fans, if I’d have been offered 4th place at the start of last year, I’d have bitten someone’s arm for it (if Luis wasn’t there first – sorry, couldn’t resist). I believe we overachieved last year, and in doing so, the expectations of many fans will have gone up this year.

While I would love nothing more than another title run in this season, and to see Anfield bouncing again, a regular run in the Champions League is something I think the majority of Liverpool fans would take for the coming years.

We have signed well over the summer and are one or two players shy of having a team that can really challenge for the title, but we now have a squad that can handle the demands for an increased number of games this year.

Everyone else has improved

The competition is also going to increase this year. If we look at the teams that finished outside the top 4 last year, Everton and Spurs haven’t really lost anyone, and I’m expecting those sides to push the top 4 all the way this year. Man Utd will be a completely different side under Luis Van Gaal and the threat of these teams alone show how competitive the battle for 4th place is going to be.

Then we look those sides that finished in the top 4 with Liverpool last year – Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City. These sides have all strengthened, and unlike Liverpool, haven’t lost their key player. Chelsea may have lost Frank Lampard but they have added quality in Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Felipe Luis, while Arsenal and Man City have both added quality to their squad.

The big 4 has become a big 7

The strength of the top 7 sides has turned the big 4 table into a big 7 now, with each side capable of taking points of one another in any given game. This highlights the importance of finishing in the top 4, and for me, this increased competition for the coming season is a big reason as to why 4th place would be a success for Liverpool.

We have a young squad and will be dealing with the loss of Luis Suarez, so it’s important to ensure we are still qualifying for Europe’s premier competition next year. A 4th place finish come the end of the season would represent a good season for Liverpool, anything else will be an added bonus. It would be great to win a cup and get a good run in the Champions League, but for me, top 4 needs to be the priority.

Can we win the league?

I’m not going to say that we can’t win the league because I think Brendan Rodgers has the team set up well to challenge and the players have a belief that has been missing for many years. I don’t think we will win the league this year however as I feel Man City and Chelsea will both be too strong. I do however feel that we can consolidate our position in the top 4, and just like last season, if I was offered 4th place right now, I would take it.

Would you be happy if we finished 4th place this year? How do you think the team will fare out this season? Let us know below.

Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard: Rival captains

Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard: Rival captains

Over half of TEAMtalk readers believe Manchester United will beat Liverpool to a top-four spot in the Premier League this season.

Our poll yesterday asked who of United, Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham will join Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal in the top four this coming season.

Despite United finishing seventh last season, over 53% of you voted for the Red Devils to climb back into the top four in Louis van Gaal's first campaign in charge at Old Trafford.

Liverpool finished second last term but, having lost Luis Suarez, the Reds came in a distant second in our poll with just under 35% of the votes.

Everton (5.24%) and Tottenham (4.85%), meanwhile, are clearly not fancied by our readers to upset the traditional status quo at the top of the table.

Championship winner

Today's poll asks 'Who will win the Sky Bet Championship this season'?

Cardiff, Derby, Fulham, Norwich and Wigan are the favourites with the bookmakers but you can also back 'Other' if you fancy an outsider.

We bring you a round-up of the latest Liverpool transfer rumours, with the search for a big name replacement for Luis Suarez in full flow.

Liverpool’s apparent search for a replacement for former star forward Luis Suarez took an interesting turn on Thursday night, with a pair of big names linked with a move to the Reds.

Initial reports of a move for Monaco and Colombia centre-forward Radamel Falcao were met with instant derision from a cynical Liverpool fan-base, but according to The Guardian , these claims were legitimate.

Andy Hunter writes that the Reds made an enquiry for the 28-year-old, in an “eye-catching attempt to bring [the striker] to Anfield.”

However, the publication continues to suggest that any move for the lethal finisher has been thwarted by advanced talks with La Liga side Real Madrid.

“A deal with European champions Real is close to being agreed…Falcao is keen to return to Madrid having enjoyed a successful two-year spell in the Spanish capital with Real’s local rivals, La Liga champions Atletico.”

This has apparently led to the club turning their attentions to another renowned centre-forward: PSG and Uruguay star Edinson Cavani.

The Liverpool Echo suggests that any move for Falcao would have been a loan deal, costing the club “as much as £12m,” alongside the striker’s wages of a reported “£10m a year, tax free.”

Cavani perhaps remains a more realistic target—although both seem a flight of fancy during a crazy transfer season.

Phil Kirkbride reports that the 27-year-old’s agent, Claudi Anelluci, told reporters “I can confirm that Cavani heard proposals from Liverpool and Arsenal.[Cavani] already said he would love to play in England, but has not yet made a final decision.”

In Ligue 1 last season, Cavani scored 16 goals in 30 appearances, despite playing second fiddle to the phenomenal Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Perhaps most encouraging, if this most unlikely of deals is pulled off, is Anelluci’s suggestion that “[Cavani] is not interested in money and fame; he just wants to be happy playing football.”

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Swansea City FC

These tentative searches seem to underline the ambition of the club in the wake of Suarez’s departure, and Kirkbride continues that interest has cooled in a lower reputation goalscorer: Swansea City’s Wilfried Bony.

“The Ivory Coast international was on a list of potential replacements for Suarez but the Reds are understood to have cooled their interest.

“Bony’s buy-out-clause is believed to be £19m and his wage demands are likely to have put Liverpool off.”

Despite being a hugely effective finisher, perhaps the Reds are now turning their attention to forwards of higher pedigree than Bony this summer.

Whether a ‘marquee’ signing is the right approach remains to be seen.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is seemingly succeeding in whittling down his wage bill, with the departures of several first-team players growing closer.

Firstly, exiled Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina edged towards a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, having passed a medical with the Bavarian giants.

With a £2.5 million deal reported yesterday courtesy of The Guardian , all that remains is a smattering of dotted I’s and crossed T’s.

The deal will likely be completed on Friday.

Fabio Borini v Yevhen Konoplyanka: Who would benefit Liverpool more next season?

Elsewhere, Italian striker Fabio Borini ‘s move to Sunderland is still in the works, according to the Wearside club’s manager, Gus Poyet.

Reports suggest that the Uruguayan remains confident of signing last season’s loan star, with the Reds having accepted a £14 million offer three weeks ago.

It is likely that Liverpool are waiting to secure the signing of a replacement striker before any deal for Borini can officially be sanctioned, as the former Roma man’s departure would leave only Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert as Rodgers’ senior strike options.

Borini is clearly Poyet’s first choice, and that the Sunderland manager remains “confident” is an encouraging sign for all parties.

Would the signing of Radamel Falcao or Edinson Cavani be wise acquisitions for Liverpool this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Recent signing Dejan Lovren was left frustrated last week as he was unable to travel to America to join up with his new Liverpool team mates.

0245__3958__lovren1000e_517X310

Although the Croatian defender was evidently disappointed at not obtaining his visa, it did not stop the 25-year-old speaking highly of his new club. In recent interviews about his £20 million move, the new number 6 has already put a smile on the faces of the Liverpool faithful.

In his first interview with the club, Lovren said: “It’s a dream come true, I am glad to be here. I am proud, and of course my family are proud and I can’t wait to start.”

The Liverpool new boy was also keen to ensure the fans he will give his all: “I am a player who will give 100% and I want to show the crowd, because they deserve to see players who will give it all. I know it is something special to play in front of them at Anfield.”

As well as speaking about the history of the club, Lovren was keen to show supporters that he was picking up the Scouse lingo already. In a recent Twitter Q and A, the defender answered to one question from a supporter with ‘haha nice one’.

If Lovren’s interviews were not enough evidence, his ecstasy was plain to see in the clubs official photographs. These photographs included him penning his five-year deal and what now seems to be the obligatory ‘lean against anything in sight’ pose at Melwood.

In the countless of signings made by the club, it would be hard to find another player as happy as Lovren was to sign his long-term contract – well, Rickie Lamber aside. With a smile as wide as the Mersey, it was clear for all that Liverpool’s fifth summer signing was desperate to come to the club and needed no convincing.

The fact that Lovren needed no convincing is yet another sign that Liverpool has signed a player who wants to play and fight for the club. With today’s market and money in football, fan’s can easily be drawn into a false sense of security with new signings. After so many signings it is hard to believe the clichés used left, right and centre in their first interview with their new club.

The versatile defender’s first goal for Southampton was one to forget for Liverpool fans. In a game that the Reds could not break down the Saints defence, Southampton’s number 5 coolly headed home the winner for the visitors. In a stand out performance, Lovren’s solid, yet sometimes erratic defending, managed to keep arguably the league’s best attack quiet.

Although Liverpool endured a memorable 2013/2014 season, their defensive errors proved costly come May. With Lovren’s capture, Liverpool may just have the defensive leader they were crying out for last season.

Calm, collective and a strong presence on the ball, the former Lyon man could be the answer to Liverpool’s leaking, flapping defence. And with backing of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, Liverpool fans will be hoping that Lovren will follow in the footsteps of the Liverpool legend.

Liverpool take on Borussia Dortmund at Anfield this Sunday in what is their final pre season game before kicking off the new season a week later at home to Southampton.

Dortmund Fans [Copyright: KENCKOphotography]

Andy Yates spoke to Manoj, editor of Dortmund fanzine, Schwatzgelb, ahead of an encounter which has excited many since its announcement earlier on in the summer.

1. Are you looking forward to Borussia Dortmund playing Liverpool for the first time since 2001?

I am really looking forward to this match. The last time Borussia Dortmund visited Anfield I missed the trip. Although it is only a friendly, this time I will travel to Liverpool to see one of the holy grails of football. While I do not have a second club I fell in love with, I still have a soft spot for Liverpool. Back then of course because of their rich tradition (and trophies) but nowadays also in respect of their alternative way compared to turbo-capitalism clubs like Manchester City FC, Chelsea FC and so on.

2. What kind of side should we expect to see Jurgen Klopp play at Anfield?

We are in the middle of the preseason preparation. Dortmund are still missing 4 German national players. So I guess especially Hummels, Großkreutz and Durm won’t play. Weidenfeller might start in goal, Piszczek as right-back, Subotic and Sokratis in central defence and Schmelzer as leftback. In holding midfield Sahin will miss the match due to injury, the same goes for longtime injury Gündogan. So Bender might start along with Kehl or Jojic. German national Matthius Ginter is another option on this position. If we play a 4-2-3-1, like most of the time during last season, Blaszczykowski will start on the right wing, Mkhitaryan in central midfield and Aubameyang on the left side. The new Italian signing, Ciro Immobile would then be our sole striker. I we play 4-4-2 Adrian Ramos will probably be our second striker while Blaszczkowski or Aubameyang might drop out.

3. Dortmund always have a good number of young players coming through the academy, who should we look out for both on August 10th and the season coming?

During the last season we really had many hyper-talented youth players making their way into the starting line-up and even further – like Mario Götze, a Dortmund breed. At the moment regarding the youth players Under-19 Euro champion Jeremy Dudziak, an attacking midfielder, is a guy to look out for. However he hasn’t impacted on Jürgen Klopp’s squad just yet. Regarding

talented players, who aren’t youth players anymore, we have central defender Marian Sarr (19), of course new signing Matthias Ginter (20), midfielder Milos Jojic (22) and right wing Jonas Hofmann (22).

4. Liverpool and BVB could well draw each other in this seasons Champions League. What are fans travelling to the Signal Iduna going to experience when they arrive?

Dortmund have a long tradition of giving a warm welcome to supporters from all over the world. There is nothing better than going to Westfalenstadion (as most supporters still call it) a couple of hours prior to the match, having some beers in a pub or at a mobile bar/grill station. Doing some football small talk, taking pictures, making friends.

5. Like Liverpool, over the years you have lost top players to clubs with more financial power, the most recent being Robert Lewandowski. How will this effect Dortmund’s season?

Lewandowski leaving is a big hit for our attack. He is pure quality and the complete package. While it will be difficult to replace him with the same kind of player, there is also a chance for Borussia Dortmund. Other players will get more shares in our attacks and will have the

chance to score more often than perhaps at times last season. So maybe all of our attackers might fill the gap a bit.

And of course there is new Italian signing Ciro Immobile. We shouldn’t expect a scoring sheet like Lewandwoski, but he will make his way in Dortmund even if he needs some matches or months to adapt to German football.

6. How popular are Liverpool over in Germany? They have quite the history vs German teams, the most memorable being the 1977 European Cup Final vs Borussia Monchengladbach.

I cannot seriously answer this question as I don’t know how many supporters each of the English clubs have in Germany. From my perception clubs like Manchester United FC, Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC are regarded as the biggest real names in English football even if that is

nowadays a little bit turned upside down by clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea.

7. BVB are hugely popular in Britain, and often compared to Liverpool in terms of style of play. How proud are you with how far you have come since your financial issues a few years ago?

The time from 2008 until today is really like a dream. About 10 years ago we thought this club might vanish. Only a couple of years later we won back-to-back Bundesliga titles, including a double, plus we reached the Champions League final in Wembley (another holy grail) in 2013.

8. Jurgen Klopp has played a huge part in your success. Just how good of a manager is he?

Looking at the complete package I haven’t experienced a better manager in Dortmund since I began watching football. There might be manager who has the same coaching talent, but Klopp is also a motivator, a very good PR-manager and knows how to transform talents into stars. Together with sporting director Michael Zorc and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke we have a superb team.

9. Marco Reus has been linked with a number of clubs, including Liverpool. How sad would you be to see him leave, should he chose to depart from BVB?

Marco Reus is a special player. Ultra fast with highspeed dribbles you very often can only interrupt by a foul. Combined with his excellent technique and powerful shot, he is a deadly weapon. There is a big chance that he might leave Dortmund next year. Clubs like FC Barcelona,

Real Madrid CF, FC Bayern Munich and Manchester United are chasing him.

It will be really difficult to make him stay, especially as he has a buy-out clause worth 35 million Euro, that can be activated next summer. On the other hand Marco Reus is a Dortmund-born player and in Dortmund he has the chance to become a legend. And yes, of course Reus leaving Dortmund would make me really sad.

10. What are your seasons expectations? Bayern Munich have strengthened their side further, will the gap in points further too?

Bayern Munich are again absolute favourites to win the title. But I don’t see them winning with a gap as large as the last two seasons.

11. Score prediction for Sunday?

Regarding Borussia Dortmund’s visit to Anfield Road I am not really sure how that will end. My guess would be 2-2 plus some beer for me and my friends travelling along with me from Berlin to Liverpool!

Thanks to Manoj for taking the time to answer our questions.

Smith is an England Under-21 international and highly-rated at Anfield, noted for his pace and delivery from wide areas.

With the Football League season starting this weekend and the Premier League the following week, transfer deals are now increasing and we can expect more youngsters and fringe players to head out over the next few weeks.

Liverpool have made inquiries about signing Colombian forward Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco, however he looks set to join Real Madrid.

Falcao, 28, missed the World Cup through injury and is looking to leave the French side after one year at the club. He signed for Monaco from Atletico Madrid last summer for around €60 million.

Several newspapers confirm on Thursday that Liverpool have attempted to sign the goalscorer as a replacement for Luis Suarez.

The Guardian’s Andy Hunter writes though that Falcao looks bound for a return to Madrid with Real.

He writes that Liverpool got no further than an inquiry for the player a few days ago.

A report in The Indepdenent cites tweets from an Italian journalist and claims Liverpool may look to sign Falcao on loan.

Simon Jones of The Daily Mail writes similarly that Real Madrid are favourites to sign Falcao – despite Karim Benzema having signed a new deal at the Spanish club – but writes of Falcao’s wages:

“The player is on a hefty salary of around £220,000 a week but Liverpool were understood to be paying Luis Suarez just under £200,000 a week and are happy to make allowances to bring in such a calibre of player.”

Meanwhile, Edinson Cavani’s agent claims Liverpool are attempting to sign the 27-year-old Uruguayan forward.

“I can confirm that Cavani heard proposals from Liverpool and Arsenal,” he is quoted.

“(Cavani) Already said he would love to play in England, but has not yet made a final decision.”
