Burnley have reiterated their desire to keep striker Danny Ings as speculation continues over his future at the club.

The England U21 international has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool over the last 24 hours, with reports suggesting he would be loaned back to the Turf Moor club - a deal the Clarets say is impossible.

Ings, 23, has impressed in his first season in England's top division, scoring seven goals in 19 appearances, but is out of contract at the end of the season.

His age means Burnley would be due compensation, but they are still keen to tie him down to a new deal as any tribunal fee would be lower than they could achieve in the regular transfer market, especially if he were to move abroad.

Chief executive Lee Hoos said: "This type of move would violate Premier League rule V7 regarding transfers so it simply cannot happen.

"This is the last time we will be making any comment regarding the player’s future.

"Over the course of the window, the player himself, manager Sean Dyche and the chairman have made it clear he won’t be going anywhere and we consider that the end of the matter."

Liverpool would not be able to sign Danny Ings then loan him back to Burnley this season, under Premier League rules which Burnley have highlighted in a statement today.

Reports emerged on Thursday evening via all the major media outlets that Liverpool were planning to sign the forward this month then loan him back to the Clarets.

Whether this is a case of Liverpool not realising the problem with their intended plan, or reporters failing to spot the error in their report, it’s slightly embarrassing for somebody.

Burnley released a statement on Friday afternoon denying that the player, whose contract expires in the summer, will leave the club this month.

Burnley FC statement:

Following growing media speculation, Burnley Football Club would like to reiterate their stance regarding striker Danny Ings.

Ings has been heavily linked in the past 24 hours with a permanent move to Liverpool, with the suggestion that he would then be loaned back to the club for the remainder of the campaign.

This kind of deal is prohibited by the Premier League under rule V7 which states that a player cannot be purchased and loaned back between Premier League clubs in the same transfer window.

Chief Executive Lee Hoos said: “This type of move would violate Premier League rule V7 regarding transfers so simply cannot happen.

“This is the last time we will be making any comment regarding the player’s future.

“Over the course of the window, the player himself, Sean Dyche and the chairman have made it clear he won’t be going anywhere and we consider that the end of the matter.”

Ings has made an impressive start to life in the Premier League, scoring seven goals so far this season, and there has been no shortage of interest.

As well as Liverpool, Tottenham are reported to be tracking the former Bournemouth striker while Real Sociedad manager David Moyes watched the forward against Liverpool at Turf Moor on Boxing Day. Should Ings allow his contract to run out, it would more than likely spark a bidding war between a number of clubs in relation to the player’s wages – something in which Liverpool would struggle to compete.

Under FIFA rules regarding young players, Burnley would be entitled to compensation in that instance, but it is understood Sociedad would only be liable to pay £300,000 – leaving them plenty of room to offer a huge salary – while fellow English clubs could end up paying a fee 10 times that amount.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers does not expect many, if any departures, from his first-team squad before Monday but he will allow 17-year-old Sheyi Ojo to go out on loan.

After Jordon Ibe‘s success at Derby in the first half of the season, Ojo, who has yet to make his senior debut but was on the bench for recent matches against Burnley and Leicester, is set for a temporary move to Sky Bet Championship strugglers Wigan.

Stewart Downing: Brendan Rodgers wanted to keep him

Stewart Downing: Brendan Rodgers wanted to keep him

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has praised in-form Hammers star Stewart Downing and admits he did not want the midfield wideman to leave Anfield.

The 30-year-old is currently in his second season at Upton Park and has been a key figure in West Ham’s rise up the table this campaign.

Back in September, Downing produced an impressive display as the east London club beat Liverpool 3-1.

The Reds go into Saturday’s return clash in the north-west with West Ham one point and one place ahead of them, and Rodgers says Downing’s excellent performances under Sam Allardyce should come as no surprise to anyone.

Rodgers said of Downing: "Stewart was one I did not want to let go.

"It was a difficult start for him but when we worked together at the beginning in the second part of the season he was one of the regular players so he wasn't someone who I wanted to move on.

"He has done very well at West Ham. He is a really gifted player technically, he has a wonderful technique, he plays games and trains every day and is a good guy, so it's not surprising to me how well he has done."

Another Hammer who used to play on Merseyside is Andy Carroll and Rodgers was also complimentary about the big striker.

He added: "Andy is a fantastic football player. He has quality and ability around the box.

"I just felt in terms of how I play, and maybe how the team operates, that he might not have been a regular player because of the movement and the speed at which we try to work.

"But that doesn't mean he is a bad player. He is an outstanding player and when he is fit he has shown that at West Ham."

As for trying to avenge the result at Upton Park four months ago, Rodgers said: "It's a different team now and we have a different mentality.

"I think at that point in time we were struggling. We were trying to play with the same flow and the same rhythm but we just couldn't find it at that time.

“I think you see now the confidence in the team. I think we've returned to the top level."

Daniel Sturridge: Has not played for over five months

Daniel Sturridge: Has not played for over five months

Striker Daniel Sturridge is likely to make his first appearance in five months when Liverpool play West Ham on Saturday.

Sturridge, who has not played for the Reds since August due to thigh problems, is in "top-class condition" according to manager Brendan Rodgers, who will decide on Friday whether to start the England forward or put him on the bench.

Liverpool will also assess defender Mamadou Sakho, who suffered a back injury in the Capital One Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday.

Sam Allardyce is hoping a number of his West Ham players can recover from minor knocks in time to face Liverpool.

The Hammers are looking for a Premier League double over Brendan Rodgers' side but could be without a host of first-team regulars, with Carl Jenkinson, James Tomkins and Alex Song all suffering with unspecified problems.

Joey O'Brien (hamstring) and James Collins (groin) could add to Allardyce's defensive woes but Senegal's exit from the African Nations Cup may see Cheikhou Kouyate return in midfield.

Danny Ings: Wanted at Anfield

Danny Ings: Wanted at Anfield

Real Sociedad appear to be Liverpool's biggest rivals in the chase for Burnley striker Danny Ings.

It is understood the Reds are interested in the England Under-21 international, while Tottenham are also reported to be tracking the 22-year-old and Sociedad manager David Moyes watched the forward against Liverpool at Turf Moor on Boxing Day

Ings is out of contract in the summer but the risk of waiting until then would more than likely spark a bidding war between a number of clubs in relation to the player's wages - something in which Liverpool would struggle to compete.

Under FIFA rules regarding young players, Burnley are entitled to compensation even if Ings runs down his current deal, but it is understood Sociedad would only be liable to pay £300,000 - leaving them plenty of room to offer a huge salary - while fellow English clubs could end up paying a fee 10 times that amount.

For that reason Liverpool have looked at the option of buying Ings now and loaning him back to Burnley for the remainder of the season.

That could potentially cost anywhere from £3million to £5m and Liverpool have already shown they are prepared to enter such arrangements after their £10m purchase of young Belgium striker Divock Origi last summer contained an agreement for him to remain at Lille on loan for the season.

Rumours on Thursday evening emerged over a possible deal to bring Burnley striker Danny Ings to Liverpool in the summer.

Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph reports that the Reds have joined the race for the in-form 22-year-old’s signature.

It is believed the Brendan Rodgers is hopeful of securing the services of the Burnley and England Under-21 striker before Monday’s Transfer Deadline Day, in a move that would allow him to return to Turf Moor until the end of the season.

The Independent ‘s Ian Herbert writes:

Sources in Lancashire suggest that Liverpool’s willingness to wait until the summer before taking the 22-year-old is tempting, because the club know that if they wait until then to strike a deal then they will be secure a minimal fee. If Burnley wait until then, they would be paid only training compensation for the player – likely to be around £3m-£5m. It is unclear what price Liverpool are offering, though a deal closer to £10m would seem realistic.

Andy Hunter of The Guardian says Ings is much-valued at Turf Moor and an immediate transfer would not be possible for Liverpool:

Dyche will not countenance the immediate departure of Ings, with his team 17th in the table and reliant on the striker’s goals to remain in the top flight. Burnley have also struggled to add to their squad this month, with Dundee United rejecting a bid for the midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

Ings’ current deal with the Clarets expires this summer, and it would surely suit the Premier League strugglers to get a little more money for their star man now, rather than at a reduced price when his contract runs out.

The former Bournemouth striker has scored seven goals in his 19 league appearances in 2014/15- an impressive ratio considering he is playing for a relegation-threatened side- and he scored 26 in just 45 matches in the Championship last season.

There are reportedly a host of other clubs interested in signing Ings, including David Moyes’ Real Sociedad, and his performances have led to some calling for him to be promoted to the England senior team.

With Fabio Borini, Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli all flattering to deceive greatly for Liverpool this season, and Daniel Sturridge‘s injury problems a huge loss to the team, added firepower is certainly needed in attack.

It seems highly unlikely that Ings would actually move to Merseyside in this transfer window, but a summer deal would put the aforementioned trios Reds futures in doubt.

Brendan Rodgers has warned that there can’t be too much pressure put on Daniel Sturridge to help Liverpool’s season, ahead of the striker’s return to action this weekend after a lengthly lay-off.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, March 26, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge and manager Brendan Rodgers as he is substituted against Sunderland during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sturridge looks almost certain to make his return from a five-month injury lay-off on Saturday, when Liverpool host West Ham, and a lot has changed since he last pulled on that famous red shirt.

During Sturridge's absence, the Reds have slipped five points behind Manchester United in the hunt for the final Champions League qualification spot.

Rodgers remains convinced Liverpool would be in the top four now had Sturridge not been sidelined for the majority of the season.

"There's no doubt (about that)," the Liverpool boss said.

But Rodgers is also aware Sturridge will not be able to single-handedly rescue Liverpool's season.

"We just have to be careful with him," Rodgers added.

"He has been out for a long time.

"We can't put him under so much pressure that he is going to be the saving grace as soon as he steps foot on the pitch."

Rodgers will wait until Friday before he decides whether to throw the striker into his starting XI for the game at Upton Park.

It is clear that Sturridge is desperate to play, though.

"I've been champing at the bit," Sturridge added.

"I'm ready now – it's been a long time coming, but I am happy with how everything has gone and I am looking forward to it.

"I won't hold back from anything."

It was during a sprint on one of the many pitches at St George's Park that Sturridge pulled up after feeling a twinge in his thigh.

The striker immediately withdrew from England's squad to face Switzerland and was ruled out for several weeks.

On the eve of his comeback, Sturridge suffered a calf problem and then, much to his dismay, he sustained another thigh injury just as he was about to come back.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City striker spent the Christmas period in Los Angeles to aid his recovery and found it hard watching his team slip further and further down the league.

"I'm not a very good watcher," he said.

"I don't like watching too much but I had to. I watched every single match when I was in the States – I was getting up early doors in the morning, so sometimes it'd be 4am depending on where I was and what time the game was.

"I'd get up early and it was important for me to see how we played, the formations and the style of the new players.

"But it was hugely important (to go out there) and I am thankful to the guys over there who helped me out." PA

Daniel Sturridge is convinced Steven Gerrard will one day become Liverpool manager.

(Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sturridge looks almost certain to make his return from a five-month injury lay-off on Saturday, when Liverpool head to West Ham, and a lot has changed since he last pulled on that famous red shirt.

Liverpool have dropped to eighth in the Barclays Premier League, Brendan Rodgers has changed the team's formation and the club's long-serving captain has announced he is to leave at the end of the season.

Gerrard played a big role in helping Sturridge go from under-performing wannabe to deadly Premier League striker and the 25-year-old admits he is "devastated" that the Liverpool captain is off to the Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the season.

But Sturridge is praying that will not be the last he sees of Gerrard. In fact, the England forward seems pretty sure he will be playing for his hero in the future.

"I'm devastated he's leaving," Sturridge told BBC Sport.

"I think he'll be at the club in some capacity very soon and I'm sure he'll manage the club one day.

"Words can't describe what he's done for Liverpool as well as his country.

"He's still a role model of mine. I look up to him, I think everyone in the squad does. He'll be sorely missed – he's somebody who's given me a lot of experience and helped me to improve as a person and a footballer." PA
