England forward Raheem Sterling is wanted by Manchester City

England forward Raheem Sterling is wanted by Manchester City

Raheem Sterling has been included in Liverpool's 30-man squad for their pre-season tour of Thailand, Australia and Malaysia.

Brendan Rodgers named the 20-year-old England striker in his squad, but Italy striker Mario Balotelli was a notable omission.

Sterling's involvement in the tour comes after he failed to report to the club's Melwood base for pre-season work on Wednesday and Thursday, citing illness, before turning up on Friday.

It was reported that the forward had also asked manager Brendan Rodgers to be allowed not to travel on the club's pre-season tour as question marks over his future with the Reds rumbles on.

Sterling has been the subject of two failed bids, the second reported to be worth £40m, from Manchester City this summer and it is understood senior figures at the Etihad Stadium are continuing to monitor the situation at Anfield.

It has been claimed that City are now poised to make contact with Liverpool again, and are possibly readying a bid of £50m, which would equal the Reds' valuation, but there has been no comment from the Etihad club.

Balotelli has been left out along with Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique, with the trio due to continue their pre-season preparations at Melwood, although their absence raises questions over their futures with the club.

Also absent from the squad are Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can and new signing Roberto Firmino, who have been given additional time off after international duty over the summer.

Liverpool are due to fly to Bangkok on Sunday ahead of their first friendly against a Thai All Stars side next Tuesday.

Gary McAllister: In his playing days at Anfield

Gary McAllister: In his playing days at Anfield

Liverpool have appointed former midfielder Gary McAllister as their new first-team coach.

McAllister played for the Reds from 2000 until 2002 and he will now work under boss Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers told the club’s website: "Gary has a special connection with this club and its supporters, and I'm delighted he is joining our team as first-team coach.

"When I met him I was struck by his passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for what we're looking to achieve here.

"He has experience coaching at the highest level and is someone who can connect with players and help them learn from his knowledge and understanding of representing this great club."

McAllister said: "I'm delighted. I'm really excited about the prospect of coming back. It's fantastic and I'm really looking forward to it.

"I feel as if I owe Liverpool, getting that opportunity at the last stage of my career, at 35 and getting that opportunity.

"This is similar, I feel the same as I did with that - that was a surprise phone call back then when I was given a chance to come and play at Liverpool as a 35-year-old.

"Right place at the right time - and I just hope it repeats itself. A lot of hard work and dedication... everything is there, Liverpool is a club where you can win things - that's a fact."

After leaving Anfield in 2002, McAllister became player-manager at Coventry City, before becoming Leeds United boss in 2008.

He then coached at Middlesbrough, before moving to Aston Villa where he was assistant to Gerard Houllier, the man who signed him for Liverpool.

"I'm looking forward to working with the players," he added. "There have been some exciting signings and there are some fantastic players already at the club.”

Martin Skrtel: Extends his seven-and-a-half-year stay at Liverpool

Martin Skrtel: Extends his seven-and-a-half-year stay at Liverpool

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has finally penned a new deal with the Anfield club after rejecting renewed terms last month.

Skrtel, 30, would have been a free agent next summer if terms had not been agreed on a new contract, but talks were prolonged as the defender held out for a suitable deal.

The Slovakian international branded Liverpool's first offer "unacceptable" last month, raising fears that he could exit Anfield after a seven-and-a-half-year stay at the club.

His agent did however admit it was "likely" a deal would be struck a fortnight later, with his client having rejected interest from Italian side Inter Milan.

Now he has signed his new contract he will compete with the likes of Dejan Lovren, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho for a place at the heart of Brendan Rodgers' defence.

The news comes after an announcement earlier on Friday that midfielder Jordan Henderson has been chosen as Liverpool's new captain, succeeding Steven Gerrard who has moved to Major League Soccer side the LA Galaxy.
