Jamie Carragher has been nominated as a potential Premier League Player of the Year at the forthcoming Northwest Football Awards.

carra, carragher, jamie carragher

The 35-year-old will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of former teammates Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva, who were the two previous recipients of the annual prize.

Carragher returned to heart of Liverpool's defence for the second half of the 2012-13 campaign - and was pivotal as the Reds finished the season in fine form.

His performances were a fitting way to end a formidable Anfield career - and now fans can vote for the Bootle boy to scoop the top accolade at this year's Northwest awards.

Carragher faces competition in the form of Leighton Baines, Pablo Zabaleta and Michael Carrick, but Kopites can show their support by clicking here to cast a vote in the Player of the Year section now.

Meanwhile, Academy starlet Jerome Sinclair has been nominated in the Rising Star category - and supporters can vote for him by following the link above.

Voting closes on October 4 - and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, November 4 at The Point, Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Brendan Rodgers has reiterated his belief that the decisions he is taking as Liverpool manager are helping to guide the club 'in the direction that it should be going in'.

The Northern Irishman has overseen three victories in five Barclays Premier League matches so far this season, with the Reds sitting in fifth place after the opening exchanges.

On Wednesday, Rodgers' team continue their quest for Capital One Cup glory - with a fascinating clash against rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford in the third round.

The boss told talkSPORT: "I want to be the one that steers the club back in the direction that it should be going in.

"That's not easy but I know I'm making the decisions in the best interests of the club, and that will always be the case.

"There was a difficult period at the beginning but from that we've grown and become better and better. I've got great confidence that in the coming months and years, we can really push on with that development.

"It's an incredible club - I've been on the outside, knowing Liverpool was a big club but it's not until you actually come in that the sheer scale and status of the club is phenomenal.

"To be the one in charge, trying to, in this part of its history, put it on the right track and the right direction - I'm hugely privileged.

"I'll fight for as long as I can to be here as long as I can; I know that's about getting good results."

Luis Suarez is eligible for selection once more against the Red Devils, making a timely return with Philippe Coutinho currently on the sidelines - and Rodgers is pleased with the level of competition within his squad.

He added: "We have got a few injuries at the moment, obviously young Philippe Coutinho - which was a big blow for us.

"Because he makes other players play, he's a wonderful technician and understands the model of our work. Competition is important for every position."

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore envisages success 'in England and Europe' for his old club under Brendan Rodgers during the coming years.

The 42-year-old, who notched 35 goals in 81 appearances for the Reds across his short spell at Anfield in the mid-1990s, believes a top-four finish is a realistic prospect for this season.

Collymore has been impressed with the work carried out by manager Rodgers - including developing young players into first-team members - since his appointment last summer.

"Brendan Rodgers doesn't have as much money perhaps as Chelsea and Manchester City," he told talkSPORT.

"But he's getting together a very good young team, players like Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho. The aims and ambitions for Liverpool this season is to try to get into that top four.

"Brendan Rodgers has to do what he does best - which is take young players, develop them, coach them and work with them every single day.

"It may take a little bit longer than it has taken Manchester City or Chelsea, who threw lots of money at the club very early.

"But I do see Liverpool, in the next five years, being successful in England and Europe once again."

Philippe Coutinho is eager to shake off his injury setback as soon as possible and pull on a Liverpool shirt again.

philippe coutinho website

The midfielder was forced off the field in the 2-2 draw against Swansea on September 16 with a shoulder complaint, and needed surgery to rectify the damage.

Coutinho has labeled the operation a 'success', but revealed his disappointment at the timing of the injury, given his inspired performances since joining the Reds in January.

The Brazilian is focused on his rehabilitation process, and wants to get back onto the pitch as soon as he is ready.

"It's annoying to get injured, especially when you are playing well, but that happens," he told Globo Esporte.

"I now want to focus on my recovery, and do everything right to be back as soon as possible to help Liverpool in the league.

"The surgery was a success and this is what matters the most. I'll be back soon."

While Coutinho has designs on making the Brazil squad for next year's World Cup, he is aware his recovery and performances for Liverpool upon his return will determine whether he receives his wish.

"I dream of getting called up again for the national team, but it's only up to me," the 21-year-old said.

"Of course it's bad when you get injured in a moment like this, but this is football.

"I have had a set-back and my concern is being fully ready as soon as possible. If I play well, things will happen naturally."

Brendan Rodgers‘ desire to get former Liverpool players more involved at the club is starting to come to fruition, with Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones taking up roles within the academy.

Jones, the former full-back who played for the club from 1991 to 1999, has taken up a part-time role as a mentor for the Under 21 side, working behind the scenes to support coach Alex Inglethorpe and his staff.

“Brendan asked me to get involved in some sort of role a few months ago” explained Jones to This Is Anfield. “It’s nothing full-time but I’m there to support the staff and offer advice to players.”

“I spoke to Ryan [McLaughlin] and Joe [Maguire] and have had a good response from the lads so far. They have a great team spirit and togetherness about the group.”

Jones was at last week’s Under 21 match against Sunderland (pictured above) alongside another player returning to the club, Steve McManaman.

They will also be joined by Robbie Fowler – whose role will be more involved. The legendary striker is currently working towards his UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence.

Earlier this year, Rodgers explained to The Liverpool Echo:

“We will be looking to do that [get former players involved] in a number of areas, whether that be through coaching or ambassadorial roles, but there’s nothing concrete at the moment. The most important thing for me is the club, not Brendan Rodgers. I stressed to the owners that this is something I want to push forward in the summer.”

Credit to Rodgers who has identified the lack of former players involved at the club and whose advice can be invaluable to players progressing in the academy.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has taken a step forward in his recovery from an ankle injury, with Brendan Rodgers hopeful that the No.2 will return 'in the next couple of weeks'.

The 29-year-old suffered a high ankle sprain during the Reds' 1-0 victory over Manchester United at the beginning of September and has not kicked a ball since.

But after Johnson tweeted to reveal that a protective boot had been removed on Monday, Reds boss Rodgers provided the latest news on the full-back's fitness.

"Glen is the type of player that you don't realise until he's not in the team, what you are missing," the Northern Irishman said.

"He is athletic and he started the season very, very well. Against Manchester United he was outstanding.

"He's got the boot off his foot and he is working very hard. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks he will be back."

Jose Enrique is predicting a bright Liverpool future for his compatriot and new neighbour, Luis Alberto.

The full-back was present at Anfield last week as Alberto struck a hat-trick for the Reds' U21s in a 5-2 victory over Sunderland.

Enrique believes it was an indication of the potential the 20-year-old, who moved to Merseyside from Sevilla in the summer, possesses.

"I didn't know Luis Alberto before he came here, but I know he made a lot of goals and assists for Barcelona B [last season]," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I told him in the first half he wasn't at his best because it is the first time he's played in a long time, but in the second half he was great and scored three goals.

"He is the type of player who has a really good last pass to find the strikers. He can score goals as well, so he is going to be important for us. He is a young player and will learn a lot here."

Alberto wasn't the only new Spaniard to pitch up at Melwood during the close season, with Liverpool also recruiting Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo.

Enrique's been more than happy to help them settle into their new surroundings.

"Luis is living next door to me now and, like Iago, I have tried to help him as much as I can because they are people from my country," he said.

"It's important with the language to try and help people settle down because it's important for the team."

Living next door to Alberto means Enrique's advice and support is always on hand as the youngster adjusts to life in a new country.

But, is Alberto a good neighbour?

"Yes, at the moment," smiled Enrique. "But we will see in the future!"

Adam Morgan scored a devastating long-range lob as Liverpool U21s eased to a deserved 2-0 victory over Manchester City in their Barclays U21 Premier League clash at Ewen Fields on Monday night.

manchester city website

The striker's unstoppable finish - coupled with a second-half side-footed goal from Cameron Brannagan - ensured that Alex Inglethorpe's side left Hyde FC's ground with all three points on a thoroughly encouraging evening for the young Reds.

Rafael Paez, a recent acquisition from Real Madrid, put on an assured display at the heart of Liverpool's defence as he helped to keep the hosts at bay.

In an opening 20 minutes that produced very little goalmouth action, Manchester City's Seko Fofana was the first to cause a degree of concern for Liverpool's backline.

The home side intercepted possession deep into the Reds' half that gifted Fofana a brief glimpse of goal from 20 yards. The youngster rushed his effort, dragging a low drive well wide.

Shortly after, Stephen Sama's headed effort was equally wayward. The centre-back met a corner with a powerful nod that flew narrowly over the crossbar.

Morgan corrected his side's previously inaccurate aiming in the most emphatic fashion minutes later with a beautifully-struck long-range effort that rendered goalkeeper Ian Lawlor completely helpless.

The striker received possession just beyond the halfway line before swiftly turning and sending a sublime attempt soaring over the City custodian and into the back of the net to stun the hosts.

Sama was inches away from doubling the visitors' tally on the stroke of half-time, but his effort mirrored his header earlier in the half. The towering defender was first to meet a set-piece yet again but he flicked the ball agonisingly over the goalframe.

The Reds were nearly made to rue that missed opportunity so soon after the restart. Devante Cole rose to meet a corner and headed towards goal but was accidentally foiled by the torso of a fellow Blue - Shay Facey - before Liverpool reacted rapidly to clear the remaining danger.

City continued to pour forward in a desperate search for an equaliser but found themselves constantly thwarted by a sturdy Reds defence.

A cross from the right flank flashed across the face of goal and drew no contact until it fell to the feet of Sinan Bytyqi, who hesitated before striking a shot that was expertly blocked by the energetic Jordan Rossiter.

With less than 20 minutes remaining, the Reds compounded Patrick Vieira's side's misery through a composed finish from Brannagan. Sama utilised a combination of pace and strength to surge past Bytyqi and Adam Drury before drilling the ball into the area for the midfielder to calmly side-foot past Lawlor.

Liverpool built on an impressive move by continuing to prevent City from having any joy in the final third of the pitch as the Reds comfortably closed out the game to deservedly secure all three points.

Man City Under 21′s 0 – 2 Liverpool Under 21′s

By Scott Taylor

An absolute stunner from Adam Morgan and a first under 21 goal from Cameron Brannagan ensured that Liverpool Under 21s beat Man City Under 21s 2-0 at Hyde on Monday night.

After last week’s 5-2 thrashing of 2nd placed Sunderland, Alex Inglethorpe’s side were back in action as they faced a Man City side who have struggled under new coach Patrik Vieira only picking up 1 week from their opening 4 games. The Liverpool boss made six changes from the side that beat Sunderland last week. Due to the first team’s game with Manchester United on Wednesday, all of the 6 players who aren’t in today’s fixture have been included in the squad for Old Trafford. They are: Jon Flanagan, Tiago Ilori, Martin Kelly, Jordon Ibe, Raheem Sterling and last week’s hat-trick hero Luis Alberto.

The good news for Liverpool was that they had new signing Rafael Paez at their disposal, after the 18 year old was granted international clearance. Also, Craig Roddan returned to midfield whilst Stephen Sama, Lloyd Jones and Joe Maguire joined Paez in defence. Despite being sent off last week, Jones started as his suspension does not start until next week. The final change saw Ryan McLaughlin – playing on the right of midfield – and Adam Morgan come into the side.

The major team news for City was that Marcos Lopes did not play, as he is expected to be in the squad for their trip to Wigan on Wednesday. Despite being the underdogs, Liverpool started the game brightly as Cameron Brannagan capitalised on a poor Man City pass, but he couldn’t gain control of the ball as Jason Denayon eventually recovered. In the 16th minute, Liverpool had their next chance as a Jack Dunn corner was well met by captain Stephen Sama at the near post, but the German could only head his effort over the crossbar.

9 minutes later, Liverpool took the lead in superb circumstances as Adam Morgan received the ball on the half way line, ran 5 yards, looked up, saw the ‘keeper was off his line and perfectly placed one over the back tracking ‘keeper as he gave the Reds the lead in the best possible manner, off the underside of the bar.

Watch Morgan’s Goal:

Morgan continued his fine goalscoring form by making it 2 goals from 2 apperances as he scored against Manchester United in his last game for the Under 21s. Chances were few and far between as the next real chance fell in injury time in the first halfl Jack Dunn’s set piece again found Sama, and again the right-back headed it over from 10 yards out. The half ended 1-0 to Liverpool Under 21s.

Knowing they needed a goal to get back into the tie, Manchester City came out on the front foot and it took them just 3 minutes to test Danny Ward as the Wales Under 21 ‘keeper mad a good reflex save to deny Devante Cole, son of former Manchester United striker Andy Cole and the Liverpool defence eventually cleared.

In the 53rd minute there was bad news for Liverpool as Jack Dunn went off injured and was replaced by Villyan Bijev, who hasn’t played since the opening game against Southampton. The injury to Dunn would be a huge loss for the Under 21s as he has impressed throughout the season thus far.

There was more bad news moments later, as McLaughlin was taken out by a Man City player and looked to recover from the nasty incident. In the 71st minute, the bad news soon turned to delight, as Sama ran past two defenders and pulled it back for Cameron Brannagan, who sloted home easily to double the Reds lead.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, September 23, 2013: Liverpool's Cameron Brannagan celebrates scoring the second goal against Manchester City during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Ewen Fields. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Chances were few and far between after Brannagan’s goal as Liverpool’s defence, especially debutant Rafa Paez and Stephen Sama performed well to restrict Man City from coming back into the game and when they started to test the young defence, it was too late to make any significant impact on the game.

Liverpool’s next game will be against Alex Inglethorpe’s former club Tottenham Hotspur on Monday 7th October, where they will be looking to make it 3 from 3 in the league and push further up the table. New signing Tiago Ilori is expected to make his Liverpool debut against Man United in the League Cup on Wednesday, after being left out of the Under 21′s side to face Man City on Monday.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 17, 2013: Liverpool's Tiago Ilori in action against Sunderland during the Under 21 FA Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Ilori, 20, was signed from Sporting Lisbon for £7m on transfer deadline day and made his first appearance for the Under 21′s last week at Anfield as they beat Sunderland 5-2. He looked composed and comfortable.

Speaking after that game, Ilori told The Liverpool Echo:

“I loved playing in the game and it was a great win. I hope I can carry on winning at Anfield. Every player wants to play whether it’s in the first team or the reserves.

“I want to get as many minutes as I can. I didn’t have a proper pre-season due to injuring my hand but it’s good to be back fit now. I’m enjoying it here. Brendan Rodgers seems like a great guy and a great coach. I will do my best for the club.”

The London born centre-back described his own style:

“I don’t think I’m such a fighter like a typical centre-back, but I can be aggressive when I need to. I like to take the ball out. I’m quick as well.”

Ilori is among a number of players left out of Alex Inglethorpe’s squad for the Under 21′s match. Jordon Ibe, Luis Alberto, , Andre Wisdom, Martin Kelly and Raheem Sterling were all among the subs for the first-team match against Sunderland on Saturday so are expected to be in the 18 man squad for Wednesday.

Full back Jon Flanagan is also expected to be in Wednesday’s squad, having put in an impressive performance for the Under 21′s last week at left-back and being left out for Monday’s match.

A unique friendly football match in memory of Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams took place in Liverpool on Sunday, and was followed by a fundraising event to generate donations to related charities.

Anne passed away in April 2013 after a six-month battle with bowel cancer, and a 24-year quest for justice; her 15-year-old son, Kevin, was among the 96 supporters who lost their lives at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989.

She refused to accept defeat in her long-term attempt to secure a fresh inquest into Kevin's death, and attended the annual Hillsborough memorial a matter of days before her passing on April 18.

Yesterday, the Scouse Reds and the Norwegian Wools used the power of football to remember Anne and subsequently raise charity funds on behalf of Hope for Hillsborough (For Justice) and Queenscourt Hospice in Southport, where the campaigner was cared for during her final days.

Anne was in attendance when the two teams last faced off in 2009, awarding the trophy to the victorious Scouse Reds, and afterwards delivered an inspirational speech, helping to raise £4,500 for Hope for Hillsborough.

Four years later, amid perfect sunshine at the Liverpool County FA on Walton Hall Park, the Scouse Reds took the spoils once more with a handsome 9-0 victory against opponents beset by injuries.

Anne's daughter, Sara, watched from the sidelines and presented the Anne Williams Memorial Trophy to the winning team, while her son Finlay acted as a mascot before kick-off.

Proceedings relocated to the nearby Taxi Club post-match, with live music provided by the likes of The Cheap Thrills, plus auctions and raffles featuring a range of sought-after memorabilia.

Items on offer included shirts donated by Jamie Carragher's 23 Foundation and former Reds striker Robbie Fowler, an autographed Rafa Benitez book, and a signed Ian Rush jersey from the 1984 European Cup final.

Organisers Phil Belger, Jason Morland and Olav Rosvold are confident that the total raised will surpass the amount achieved in 2009, and are hopeful of making the match an annual event.

Donations to the cause are still welcome and gratefully accepted; if you would like to contribute, you can do so using the email address norwegianscouse@live.co.uk via PayPal.
