Jose Mourinho: Some positive listening for the Chelsea boss

Jose Mourinho: Some positive listening for the Chelsea boss

TEAMtalk writers offer their predictions for the Premier League season - and there is not much optimism for the Manchester United revolution.

Now we have all the facts to hand, with the transfer window closed and the Premier League squads settled, our writers have given their predictions for the new season - and the 2014-15 title winner is a unanimous choice.

The identity of the top four is far less clear. Mark Holmes, Matt Briggs and Rob McCarthy see little changing among the leading quartet, whereas Ian Watson and presenter Jon Francis have more faith in Manchester United. But do they think Liverpool, Arsenal or Manchester City will make way for Van Gaal's side?

At the other end, there is little hope for Burnley, but our writers are also in agreement over a bleak outlook for one of the Premier League's more established sides.

The identity of the third team to be relegated is less clear. There are concerns for Leicester, Crystal Palace and Sunderland among others, but who will go down?

Listen in for all predictions at the top and bottom of the Premier League and a few more forecasts, including: which manager will win the sack race? Who will be the season's surprise package? Who might we see in the England squad before the end of the season?

As always, have Your Say and use the story comment facility to tell us who's right, who's wrong and who has lost the plot.

Admin harap Suso stay kat Liverpool..

Liverpool capped an impressive summer transfer window with the acquisition of Mario Balotelli. We take a look at the best and worst summer windows of the past decade.

BEST – 2004

The 2004/05 summer transfer window saw Rafa Benitez usher in two of the club’s most important players in a campaign which saw the Reds bring home their most-prized relic: the Champions League trophy.

For a combined £17 million, Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia joined from Real Sociedad and Barcelona respectively, with a double announcement made towards the end of August.

In his first season in charge of the club, these two signings were a real statement of intent by the Spanish manager; Benitez’s compatriots would bring a measure of culture to a receding club.

Alonso is one of the best players in Liverpool’s recent history, remains a world-class midfielder in his autumn years, and fostered a formidable partnership with the blooming Steven Gerrard.

Garcia, the archetypal flair player, helped the Reds to the Champions League final with an infamous ‘ghost goal’ against Chelsea in the semi-final.

Elsewhere, the signing of Djibril Cisse, for a fee of £14.5 million from Auxerre, garnered a more muted impact upon the club; nevertheless, the eccentric Frenchman played a crucial role in the famous victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.

The less said about fellow signings Josemi Rey and Antonio Nunez the better—Alonso and Garcia more than make up for these disappointments.

In terms of outgoings, Benitez had to compensate for the losses of Michael Owen, Danny Murphy, Markus Babbel and Stephane Henchoz—all important players at their peak—but the prove is in the trophy room.

A seminal transfer window in the club’s recent history.

WORST – 2008

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, March 10, 2009: Liverpool's Andrea Dossena celebrates scoring his first, Liverpool's fourth goal, against Real Madrid during the UEFA Champions League First Knockout Round 2nd Leg match at Anfield. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The calibre of players brought in during Benitez’s penultimate summer transfer window didn’t quite live up to former acquisitions, with a series of expensive flops ‘gracing’ the Anfield turf.

Full-backs Andrea Dossena and Philipp Degan both joined in the space of two days at the beginning of July, and thus the club’s problematic full-back years began.

Replacing, ostensibly, two of the finest full-backs Liverpool fans have enjoyed in the past decade, the European pair were tasked with the near-impossible.

John Arne Riise and Steve Finnan—although both at the end of their peak years—became cornerstones of the phenomenal success achieved by Benitez at the club; between them, Riise and Finnan amassed 565 appearances for the Merseyside club.

Dossena did provide the Reds with some memorable moments, scoring in consecutive victories over Manchester United and Real Madrid, the former an impudent lob over a helpless Edwin Van der Sar.

Neither, however, can be considered a success.

Furthermore, the acquisitions of strikers David N’Gog (£1.5 million) and Robbie Keane (16 million) failed to provide the requisite firepower needed to bolster the Liverpool attacking ranks.

Irish legend Keane was a particular disappointment, scoring seven goals in 28 games before moving to Spurs at a loss of £3 million just six months later.

BEST – 2014

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 31, 2014: Liverpool's Alberto Moreno celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

With the unfortunate departure of Luis Suarez this summer, and needing to capitalise on an unexpected Premier League success last season, this transfer window was central to Brendan Rodgers’ development of the club.

Replacing Suarez in terms of goal scoring are the £20 million duo Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli—the latter in particular a mouth-watering, box-office acquisition and a true bargain.

The aforementioned full-back dilemma spanned six seasons on Merseyside, but this summer Rodgers has brought in two wide defenders capable of filling this gaping void in Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo.

Raiding Southampton further, the signings of Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren were arguably overpriced, but boost the depth of Rodgers’ squad and his first team significantly.

Both leaders, the Reds will need the influence of the pair this season.

BOSTON, USA - Wednesday, July 23, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against AS Roma at Fenway Park on day three of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Elsewhere, the signings of Lazar Markovic, Emre Can and Divock Origi, at a combined £40 million, are impressive additions capable of becoming key players for Liverpool both for the present and, most importantly, for the future.

Finally, sanctioning the sales of high-wage peripheral figures Pepe Reina and Daniel Agger, as well as stagnating youngster Conor Coady, Martin Kelly and Jack Robinson, underlines the ruthless but pragmatic vision of the current Liverpool manager.

A hugely promising window, for now and for the future.

WORST – 2010

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 24, 2010: Liverpool's Paul Konchesky in action against Blackburn Rovers during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The single worst summer transfer window of the last decade for Liverpool came during the miserable reign of the Nosferatu of Merseyside, Roy Hodgson, in 2010.

Overshadowing the promising early signing of young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Charlton Athletic, attacking midfielders Milan Jovanovic and Joe Cole were brought in on free transfers, bookending the signing of another youngster, £2 million man Danny Wilson, in July.

Alongside hefty signing-on fees—belying the term ‘free transfer’—Jovanovic and Cole were reportedly earning £120,000 and £100,000 a week at the club respectively; with 60 appearances and 7 goals between them, the pair were an unassailable failure.

Disappointing Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen joined for £4.5 million towards the beginning of August, whilst Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones made the switch from Middlesborough later in the month.

Loyal servant of the club, Jones remains the only spectre of this dismal transfer window still at the club, and is far from the quality required even as second choice.

Finally, the transfer residual nadir for the club throughout the last decade in terms of transfers can be found in the gleaming scalp of Paul Konchesky.

The most deplorable signing of the past 10 years, Hodgson shelled out £3.5 million, plus Lauri Dalla Valle, plus Alex Kacaniklic for the former West Ham defender.

Leaving in acrimonious, “scouse scum” circumstances, Konchesky left behind a legacy of despondency.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Thursday, April 29, 2010: Liverpool's Javier Mascherano during the UEFA Europa League Semi-Final 2nd Leg match against Club Atletico de Madrid at Anfield. (Photo by: David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

To compound this disappointing, this transfer window saw Liverpool lose their only, genuine world-class talent at the time in Javier Mascherano.

The tough-tackling Argentine signalled a disappointing end to a successful jaunt on Merseyside with a £17 million move to Barcelona.

Liverpool lost one world-beater, and gained seven profound failures.

Alberto Moreno: Liverpool defender celebrates his goal against Tottenham

Alberto Moreno: Liverpool defender celebrates his goal against Tottenham

Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno admits he felt like he had a point to prove following defeat on his debut for his new side at champions Manchester City last week.

Moreno, a summer signing from Europa League winners Sevilla, was at fault for City's opener in the 3-1 defeat, but capped a fine Liverpool performance with a glorious strike in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Tottenham.

And the 22-year-old is eager for his goal against Spurs, which saw him run 60 yards before firing home across Hugo Lloris, to be the first of many for his new club.

"After making my debut and losing against City I had a point to make," Moreno said on the club's official website.

"When I stole the ball from (Andros) Townsend and saw a way through, all I could think about was getting to their goal and scoring. I didn't care how many metres I had to run.

"I hope it isn't my only one as I hope to dedicate many more to Liverpool's fans.

"If they didn't know me before, they will from now on thanks to my goal against Tottenham."

Moreno is looking forward to playing UEFA Champions League football for the first time in his career and revealed he is excited about locking horns with Real Madrid, who have been drawn in Liverpool’s group.

"Playing in the Champions League is going to be amazing," he added.

""It's all new for me and I'm really looking forward to it.

"Plus, we have Real Madrid at Anfield and I'll be wearing Liverpool's colours. It's going to be a unique experience.

"I saw the trophy at Melwood and I got goose bumps. Hopefully we can win it this year. Hopefully that day will come."

Raheem Sterling: Has started the season superbly for Liverpool

Raheem Sterling: Has started the season superbly for Liverpool

Hull City, Aston Villa, Stoke City, Chelsea, Southampton, Swansea City and Liverpool all have players in our Team of the Month for August.

Every Monday or Tuesday we look back at the weekend's Premier League aciton to pick a perfect XI from that particular round of games.

This season, we will be keeping a tally of all the players to get the nod in order to help us pick nine Teams of the Month before eventually naming our Team of the Season in May.

TEAMtalk's Team of the Month, August (4-2-3-1): McGregor, Hutton, Vlaar, Shawcross, Azpilicueta; Schneiderlin, Fabregas; Dyer, Sterling, Sigurdsson; Costa.

Allan McGregor - Hull City

Hull have had something of a mixed start, winning 1-0 at QPR on the opening day before drawing 1-1 against Stoke with 10 men and then suffering a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

McGregor more than played his part in the success at Loftus Road, was named in our Team of the Week after helping the Tigers to a draw against Stoke, and then helped keep the score down against a rampant Villa side at the weekend.

Alan Hutton - Aston Villa

Not much was expected of Villa this season, with Hutton's return to the first-team fold an apparent sign of a club in crisis.

The Scot has impressed in all three of his Premier League appearances, however, to help Villa to two clean sheets and seven points from nine.

Ron Vlaar - Aston Villa

Vlaar was perhaps the one member of the Villans backline that fans did have any confidence in going into the new season, and the Dutchman has not disappointed.

Even the much-maligned Philippe Senderos has looked solid alongside the captain's calming influence.

Ryan Shawcross - Stoke City

Shawcross scored Stoke's equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Hull on the second weekend but it was his exceptional performance in their surprise win at Manchester City that gets him the nod.

The 26-year-old has made a Premier League-high 38 clearances already, has won eight tackles yet given away only one free-kick, and is yet to be dribbled past.

Cesar Azpilicueta

The only player in this XI not to have been named in any of our Teams of the Week so far, Azpilicueta's consistency - and a lack of it from others - earns him a place alongside August's finest.

The Spaniard has made the left-back slot his own now at Chelsea and was particularly impressive in the 2-0 win over Leicester in which he showed off his qualities at both ends of the pitch.

Morgan Schneiderlin - Southampton

With the likes of Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana moving on, Schneiderlin's importance to Southampton has become bigger than ever this season - it will have been a huge relief to everyone associated with the south coast club that the window has closed with him still at St Mary's.

Speculation over the Frenchman's future could easily have affected his performances, but two goals in Saturday's impressive win at West Ham proved he remains as committed as ever.

Cesc Fabregas - Chelsea

Back in the Premier League after three years at Barcelona, Fabregas has been the outstanding player of the first three weeks of the new season.

The Spaniard has completed more passes than any of his Chelsea team-mates in all three of his appearances for the Blues so far, has set up an impressive 10 goalscoring chances for team-mates, and already has a Premier League joint-high four assists to his name.

Nathan Dyer - Swansea City

With three wins from three, including an opening-day victory at Manchester United, Swansea have undoubtedly been the stand-out team of the Premier League to date.

Having scored the only goal of the game against Burnley and then grabbing a brace in Saturday's 3-0 stroll against West Brom, Dyer has certainly been enjoying himself in a confident side.

Raheem Sterling - Liverpool

Alongside Fabregas, Sterling is the only player in the XI to have made two of the three Teams of the Week so far this season.

The young England forward scored one and set up the other in Liverpool's opening-weekend win over Southampton and then, after a quiet night against an in-form Manchester City, tore Tottenham to shreds in the 3-0 win at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Gylfi Sigurdsson - Swansea City

While Dyer has caught the eye with three goals, Sigurdsson sits alongside Fabregas with a league-high four assists already and, unlike the Spaniard, has a goal to his name, too.

In other words, Swansea have only scored one goal this season that their former loan star has not scored or directly assisted. He has undoubtedly played a bigger role than any other player in their fine start.

Diego Costa - Chelsea

Many doubted whether Costa would hit the ground running at Chelsea, particularly after a disappointing World Cup campaign, but Spain international has quickly silenced his doubters with four goals from his first three games.

His brace against Everton in particular proved exactly why Jose Mourinho splashed the cash on him over the summer - he is as clinical as they come.

Name your Teams of the Month for August in the comments section below.

Kolo Toure: Confident he will get game time at Liverpool

Kolo Toure: Confident he will get game time at Liverpool

Kolo Toure saw out the transfer window at Liverpool and is confident he will get opportunities to impress under Brendan Rodgers.

With further defensive reinforcements drafted in over the summer, Toure finds himself some way down the pecking order at Anfield.

His vast experience remains a useful asset, but the likes of Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sako provide fierce competition for centre-half berths.

It was that strength in depth which led Liverpool to accept a bid from Turkish side Trabzonspor, only for Toure to snub a switch in favour of remaining on Merseyside.

He still considers that to have been the right decision, with the 33-year-old convinced that minutes will be available as Liverpool compete on multiple fronts in 2014/15.

Toure said: “I have one more year on my contract here and this is a great club. As a player, you want to play for great clubs.

“The time I’ve spent at Liverpool already has been amazing for me. We had a great season and I’ve had a great time.

“You always want to be part of a great team and I hope this will be another great season for Liverpool Football Club.”

He added: “There are so many games this season with the four competitions that the manager needs depth.

“I am sure everyone will get chances at some point.

“The most important thing for me is what’s best for the team, it’s not about individuals.

“I’m part of a great project here and I will do my best every time I play.”

Liverpool have announced their official squad list for the 2014/15 season, with the ins and outs explained here.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 31, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the second goal against Tottenham Hotspur from the penalty spot with team-mates Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli during the Premier League match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Following the closure of the summer transfer window, Brendan Rodgers was required to finalise his squad list for the 2014/15 season.

The stipulations presented by the Football Association limit a first-team squad to 25 players; however, various rulings can apply in contrary to this.

With the recent ‘Home Grown Player’ limitations, a maximum of 17 players ineligible for such classification can be named.

To be classed as home-grown (HG in this list), the player must been registered with any club within the FA or Welsh FA parameters for at least three whole seasons, or 36 months, prior to their 21st birthday, at any time.

Important within the Liverpool squad, players under the age of 21 (U21 in this list) do not require registration within this squad list.

Here is the Liverpool squad list for the 2014/15 season, including notable U21 players:

Goalkeepers

Brad Jones (HG)

Simon Mignolet

Defenders

Glen Johnson (HG)

Javier Manquillo (U21)

Jon Flanagan (U21)

Alberto Moreno

Jose Enrique

Dejan Lovren

Martin Skrtel

Mamadou Sakho

Kolo Toure

Midfielders

Steven Gerrard (HG)

Lucas Leiva

Joe Allen (HG)

Jordan Henderson (HG)

Emre Can (U21)

Adam Lallana (HG)

Philippe Coutinho

Raheem Sterling (U21)

Lazar Markovic (U21)

Suso (U21)

Strikers

Daniel Sturridge (HG)

Mario Balotelli

Rickie Lambert (HG)

Fabio Borini (HG)

Rodgers may supplement his squad with further U21 players throughout the season, as with the previous campaign with the inclusions of players such as Jordan Rossiter and Brad Smith.

Whilst this finalised senior squad cannot be altered until the opening of the January transfer window on 1 January 2015, any free signings may be registered at any time.

This is important to note, given the Reds’ interest in former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, now a free agent.

Are there any notable inclusions or exclusions to Brendan Rodgers’ squad for 2014/15? Let us know in the comments below.

The success of Brendan Rodgers‘ third season in charge will largely depend on how his nine signings this summer fit in at the club, writes Steven Harris.

How to tell if your club has a clear transfer policy; are they scrabbling around on transfer deadline day desperately trying to bring in Dutch wing-backs and paying crazy money to loan a long-term injury stricken striker for a year?

If the answer to this is ‘yes’ then the club does not have a clear transfer policy and is possibly flailing about hoping to settle fans’ nerves with a big name signing or two. If the answer is ‘no’ then your club is likely to be building from a solid platform of intentions and playing philosophy.

In recent years transfer deadline day has not been a time I have enjoyed. Liverpool have been more in the flailing around camp than most of us would have preferred.

Two years into the reign of a manager with a clear philosophy both on and off the pitch the club have returned to the Champions League which has certainly made it easier to do transfer business swiftly as well as making it more probable that the targets the club has in mind will sign for Liverpool.

Once we were the club playing over-the-top fees for players. That mantle, in this transfer window at least, has been passed on to Manchester United – which is satisfying in itself. Angel Di Maria is a great player but the rebuild at that club is going to take more than one window, just as it did with Liverpool.

FSG have been in control of Liverpool for almost four years. From initial scepticism that American ownership had not gone very well for the club in the shape of Tom Hicks and George Gillett fans have seen John Henry and his company patiently build, make good on promises, and allow Brendan Rodgers to implement his policy in terms of playing style and transfer targets.

Which is why the signs are positive for the business done over the summer.

Dejan Lovren is the kind of communicative, commanding centre-back missing since the retirement of Jamie Carragher. New full-backs Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo show promise though both will probably need time to adjust to the pace of the Premier League. Adam Lallana was eagerly anticipated from the moment the rumours of him coming to Anfield began last season – once fit he should happily slot into the Rodgers’ systems of play. Emre Can already looks a powerful player at the age of 20 and will hopefully only get better with age.

Then there are the forwards. Lazar Markovic was wanted by clubs across Europe so it’s something of a coup to have secured his signature. Rickie Lambert may not excite some but he is a proven and natural goalscorer who adds strength in depth. And Mario Balotelli? I have reservations but there is no denying his talent.

Considering that Danny Welbeck has just left Old Trafford for Arsenal for the same fee Balotelli cost Liverpool, the Italian looks even more of a bargain. I’m also rather glad Fabio Borini’s move to QPR did not happen. A fellow Italian in the camp must be a good thing for Balotelli and, as Fabio proved last year at Sunderland, he is a pacy striker with an eye for the spectacular on his day.

Strength in depth was the aim this window and I’d say that’s exactly what Liverpool have managed. Add the fact that the rumours of Victor Valdes arriving as a free agent in the near future to increase competition on the keepers, and a case can be made for every area of the squad having been improved.

There are naysayers, of course. Mostly they point to the money spent by Spurs after the departure of Gareth Bale last summer. They too purchased a raft of players spread across the team yet the chemistry did not work and the team went backwards. Some fear that having lost our best player of 2013/14 and spread the £75m we received from him across nine players, Liverpool are in danger of going the same way.

I disagree. With all due respect to Andre Villas-Boas I was never convinced by his coaching methods or certain that he had an overarching playing philosophy. He was also the latest in a succession of quick-fix managers brought in to presumably bring instant success to Spurs, meaning the pressure on him to deliver was huge.

Brendan Rodgers is under pressure of course. This is the season he told the owners and the fans to judge the development of his team on. Last year was incredible but a season ahead of schedule. What Rodgers does have, however, is the support of the owners in a way Spurs managers of the past ten years can only envy.

Rodgers has a strategic plan concerning so many aspects of the progression of the club. His team selections and formations are adaptable and he is that rare beast in the modern era – a fine man manager.

Ten years ago we witnessed a Rafalution and new horizons beckoned. Benitez can hardly be said to have failed, but in the end the club stagnated while his hands were tied by the previous owners.

Under Rodgers there is a genuine sense of a revolution. He will indeed be judged by this season and by the impact his signings have. I predict a season of consolidation, of exhilarating football as ever, and of qualification for the Champion’s League again. And if I’m wrong you can print this piece out in May and I’ll happily eat my words.
