John Ritchie sits down with a copy of Jonathan Wilson and Scott Murray’s ‘The Anatomy of Liverpool’ (Orion Books).
Read our exclusive interview with Jonathan Wilson, author of ‘The Anatomy of Liverpool’
It was with some trepidation that I picked up the Anatomy of Liverpool by Jonathan Wilson.
The book is described as a history in ten matches which lie on the fault lines of history; matches which maybe mark the end of one era, or the beginning of another. All sounds great right?
Well yes in one way, after all I love reading about the history of Liverpool. I’m a self-confessed addict. Yet on the other hand, how can you sum up such a great club by just looking at the Liverpool FC through the singular lens of football?
A football club has its own DNA, culture, traditions and footprint which attracts fans in the first place.
How many of our eyes have been opened to its beauty for the first time as we entered Anfield to witness the majestic sight of the KOP in full voice, with the smell of Bovril and grass swirling around your head, that aroma which gives you the heady sensation that this for some is nirvana, our place of worship.
Yes, I did start to read with fear, fear that that the author had ignored very essence of Liverpool often ignored by the wider media outlets and modern day pundit. However those fears were soon put to rest.
Wilson’s book was a refreshing surprise as he takes us on a journey back to the clubs embryonic stage of Liverpool’s story. You can almost taste the atmosphere as he describes the walk to Villa Park in 1899.
Liverpool would battle it out for the league title, only to be beaten 5-0 simply undone by a far superior side.
It’s worth noting that this club was not always majestic, it’s apt that in a time of another phase in our history this book reminds us sometimes you experience the hard times before the good.
Indeed we learn about the formation of the club and that’s the essence of the book. Within two years, Liverpool would be league champions; but it’s the lessons learned that Wilson portrays as the building blocks that would lead to the league championship due to a late charge in the league.
The same charge that would become a ‘template’, the very model forged all those years ago which became a pattern for repeating the future successes throughout the clubs more glorious years in the 70’s and 80’s.
One of the most enjoyable chapters in the book is the build-up to the FA Cup final in May 1965. For fans who wonder why Shankly is oft remembered as the father of the club, I assure you you’ll read no better account.
Shankly the man is explored in as much detail as Shankly the manager. The man with a utopian view that football could liberate the world, his appreciation for the release it gave people, his kind gestures in inviting a stranger into his home for a cuppa, or paying the fares for fans who couldn’t afford to get home after a game.
Indeed, Wilson manages to set the scene perfectly as Bob Paisley attempts to chase down a police motorcycle to help the team reach Wembley on time.
One is taken into the coach as the players listen to a Shankly interview talking about his love of Celtic songs and books which he would take with him on a desert Island. His luxury item was of course a football. I had to smile reading that.
It’s at this stage Wilson explores the DNA of a Liverpool fan, who they are and the passion. He talks about how Shankly’s genius was to capitalise on the culture of Liverpool at the time which seemed to sweep the nation.
Shankly wasn’t just building a football club, he was building a “socialistic paradise, a movement of the workers and people of Liverpool”. Shankly connected music to football and the results were staggering.
As we pass throughout more glorious memories we arrive when Liverpool and Everton meet for an FA cup reply.
Indeed, the match itself is but a pre-curser to the eventual downfall of Liverpool taking us to the doorstep of the Graeme Souness era.
It’s one of things I think about often as a fan who grew up with Souness as my weekly penance. As much as he talked a good game, he never delivered on his promise.
Fans could do well to look at how managers talk, and how much to read into it in an age of self-imploding on twitter due to the latest press release which some may say is not the language of a big club. It’s results and actions which speak louder than words.
The journey ends in Istanbul, but we begin the chapter by looking at Houllier and how his reign eventually crumbled.
A funny anecdote Wilson recalled was Robbie Fowler’s famous fall out which was worsened with Fowler inadvertently hitting Phil Thompson with a ball at Melwood.
Picture the scene, two legends of the club with well over twenty major honours between them arguing over a ball mistakenly hitting someone. Thompson was famous for his bust up’s and this was a pre-cursor to ‘God’ eventually being sold.
It’s a wonderfully written book which captures the true highs and lows. A lot of the time we wonder if it all might have been very different, and with hindsight, that’s the aim.
It’s an anatomy which manages to capture the very essence of what the club is about, whilst reminding us of the very human side of the game.
Personality, luck, hard work, fortune good and bad; Wilson’s work is a triumph that rebuilds those forgotten memories and helps educate fans of a history that helps set’s the context for what many describe as the ‘Liverpool Way’.

Mohamed Salah’s proposed January transfer to Liverpool is still on hold, with rivals clubs now coming into the picture.
The Reds have been favourites for some time to sign the Basel winger, but have reached a stumbling block over their valuation of the Egyptian international, compared to the Swiss club’s.
talKSPORT suggest that Russian Premier League club Zenit St Petersburg are now in for Salah.
Alex Varney writes:
It has been suggested that manager Luciano Spalletti could be ready to spend around £12m to land the forward before the window shuts with Basel seemingly ready to cash in.
Former Egypt national coach Bob Bradley last week suggested Salah was on the verge of a move to Anfield, despite speculation suggesting the deal was under pressure.
“I was saying yesterday that in Egypt, a great success story in the last two years is a young player called Mohamed Salah,” Bradley told Egyptian television, with quotes picked up by KingFut .
“He left and we helped him to leave Egypt first to FC Basel, and from what I read and hear, in the coming days you will see his name again because I think it will be a big transfer to a Premiership team.”
Salah has previously been described as the “Egyptian Messi” for his tricky skills and pace. He would bring fresh dynamic options to the Liverpool’s attack.
Last week, This Is Anfield writer Henry Jackson brought us a report on the 21-year-old, and how he would fit into Brendan Rodgers’ system at Anfield.
Jackson wrote:
The African is probably at his most natural in the ‘inverted winger’ position on the right- the term given for playing on the opposite side to your stronger foot, like Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery – drifting inside onto his wand of a left foot.
Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Porto midfielder Fernando Reges, a holding midfielder our writer Adam Griffies believes would be a shrew signing for Rodgers.

Martin Kelly has revealed how he received a big confidence boost in playing the full 90 minutes of Liverpool’s FA Cup victory over Oldham Athletic on Sunday.
The Reds defender has struggled with injury and fitness since rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee back in September 2012, but is nearing his full rehabilitation.
“The Oldham game was brilliant for me,” Kelly is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying.“I was probably more nervous before the match than I had ever been playing for Liverpool. It was just because it was my first start for so long.
“It’s great to get that behind me. I got cramp in my calf around the 65-minute mark but it was great to get the full 90 minutes – to get up and down that line.”
Kelly started at right-back for the Reds as they went on to knock Oldham out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Iago Aspas and Raheem Sterling.
He added, “We did what was needed to get through to the next round and overall I thought it was a strong performance from the lads.”
Now the 23-year-old hopes for a good FA Cup run to give him more playing time and pushing his way back into the Liverpool first-team.
Kelly believes it is important for more game time for fringe players, like himself.
He continued, “A good Cup run is vital for me in terms of getting games. With no Europa League, we have to keep going in the Cup games.
“Whether we play Bournemouth or Burton next, we know it’s going to be difficult. We will give respect to whoever we are playing.
“As a Liverpool player you want to win every competition – that’s the mentality we have under Brendan Rodgers.
“We’re all enjoying our football and showing the fans what they want to see.”

Daniel Sturridge is set to return to first-team action this Sunday against Stoke City, slightly ahead of schedule in his recovery from injury.
The Liverpool striker suffered ankle ligament damage during a training session in November and has been sidelined since.
The Reds take on Stoke at the Britannia Stadium in the league this Sunday, 12th January 2014 at 4.10pm.
Although his time out has seen a meteoric rise in form of Luis Suarez, England international Sturridge’s return will be welcomed by all at the club.
Mike Whalley of ESPN reports:
The England striker, 24, came through an intensive training session on Monday, increasing hopes that he is over the injury that has forced him to miss his side’s last nine games, sources told ESPN FC.
In last Friday’s pre-Oldham game press conference, Liverpool assistant boss Colin Pascoe gave an update on Sturridge’s fitness, saying, “Sturridge is out there training and looking good, but you’ve got to assess it day by day and hope it won’t be too long.”
Sturridge enjoyed a blistering start to the Premier League season, with 11 goals in his 14 appearances this season.
In total, the former Chelsea forward has scored 22 goals in 30 appearances for the Reds, since his move from Stamford Bridge a year ago.
Liverpool are still sweating on the availability of Daniel Agger, who was forced from the Reds’ 2-0 FA Cup victory over Oldham on Sunday with a knee injury.
Joe Allen is also a doubt after picking up a knock against Chelsea at the back end of December, but PhysioRoom.com are reporting that Mamadou Sakho should be fit to face Stoke at the weekend:
Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling has revealed that a stright-talking half-time discussion from Brendan Rodgers helped Liverpool turn their poor game around against Oldham on Sunday. Read more about that here.

The 21-year-old is a fantastic talent, and a potential future Reds superstar, but Henry Jackson (@OnFootballTweet) believes the Brazilian has been disappointing of late.
First things first, before I receive a tirade of abuse, this is not saying Philippe Coutinho is not a marvellous footballer. Since arriving at Anfield a year ago he has produced some moments of magic, particularly with his fantastic vision. He has the potential to become one of the best players in the Premier League.
My point is that, in the last month or so, he has been one of Liverpool’s weaker players, especially given his talent. Whether it be in the outstanding away win at Tottenham or the frustrating defeat to Chelsea, he has been disappointing by his standards.
His final ball has not been clinical enough, his shooting has left a lot to be desired and even his fitness levels have looked below par in some of the more gruelling matches. While the likes of Luis Suarez, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have been superb, it has often been Coutinho to blame for losing the ball or choosing the wrong option in vital areas.
The hugely gifted Brazilian has also only found the back of the net twice this season, which for a player of his ability is not good enough. One was virtually impossible to miss, against Everton, while the other, the opener away to Manchester City, was also pretty straightforward in all honesty.
He has had 59 attempts on goal this season, which highlights the fact that his finishing can be very erratic. Too often he has done the hard work but then failed to convert with the goal at his mercy – when he places a shot, it’s weak or wide, when he goes for power it often ends up blazing over.
As mentioned above, this is not an attack on Coutinho- he is one of the best players at the club in my opinion- it is just saying that his normally high standard has definitely dropped in recent games.
This current dip may well be down to the shoulder injury that kept him out for a large chunk of the early part of the season. He has never quite looked 100 per cent since his return in early November, give or take the odd moment of individual brilliance; the dribbling run against Hull, for example.
It is, of course, important to stress that Coutinho is still very young and raw. He is far from the finished article, and will only get better and better in the coming years.
He is, however, one of the most important players in Liverpool’s squad. When he is at his best he has the ability to run the show, and his link-up play with Suarez and Daniel Sturridge has often been a joy to watch. At the moment though, he is not reaching those heights.
The next three or four months are absolutely critical in Liverpool’s quest for Champions League football next season, and Brendan Rodgers and everyone associated with the club need Philippe Coutinho back to his brilliant best as soon as possible.
