Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers plans to include the available-again Luis Suarez in his squad for the Reds' Capital One Cup third-round encounter with Manchester United on Wednesday night.

The Uruguayan has now fully served his 10-match suspension and is eligible to play at Old Trafford, with the manager intending to make a decision in the coming days on whether the No.7 starts.

"He certainly comes back into the squad and we're delighted to have him," Rodgers said at his pre-match press conference today.

"It has been a really difficult time for him in terms of not playing games. But I've got to say, how he has prepared himself over the last number of weeks has been fantastic, with his attitude in training and everything.

"He'll travel with us and we'll reflect in the next 24 hours whether he starts or not. Having someone of that quality back into your squad gives everyone a lift.

"Everyone knows the depth of his qualities, and his attitude - he's non-stop in his commitment and I'm sure once he gets back onto the field again he'll show what he has shown since he's been here, which has been top quality."

The 26-year-old has been participating in a number of behind-closed-doors fixtures during his time on the sidelines, and the boss believes Suarez is fully prepared for a return to competitive action.

"We've been preparing him for this moment for a number of weeks now," he added.

"You never get the full match fitness until you're playing and you have the crowd and everything, but one of the things that has astounded me in the time I've been here has been his physicality.

"This is a guy that last season travelled all around the world internationally, played games and came back - I assessed him and thought that maybe he might have been a bit tired; you put him into the next game and he scored a hat-trick away at Wigan.

"He's a robust character and his biggest quality is his desire and commitment. He comes back into the reckoning now and what he will do is give it 100 per cent and I'm sure after a few games he'll get right back up to speed again.

"From what I've seen in training and all the extra work he has put in, and all the game time he has been able to collate over the last number of weeks, he has had good preparation to come back.

"That's the type and the beauty of him. He played a game behind closed doors; we had a reserve game the night before, so a lot of the older reserve players were playing in that game.

"We had a behind-closed-doors game against Burnley with a lot of our younger players. I know a lot of players who probably would have decided just to come in and train that morning.

"But he loves the game, he lives for the game and he put everything into that. It's what we expect because that's the type of character he is."

The Reds travel to face their rivals little over three weeks after recording a 1-0 victory over United at Anfield in the Barclays Premier League, with Daniel Sturridge the match-winner on the day.

That triumph was Rodgers' first over the Red Devils since he took the managerial reins at Liverpool - and the 40-year-old explained why this latest meeting will be one for all to look forward to.

He said: "It's a game that no matter what competition it's in, Liverpool v Manchester United is always a massive game.

"It's certainly one that we're going there looking to get through into the next round. After the disappointment of the weekend, it's great to get back on the field again.

"They're always close games, always tight games. I'm really looking forward to going there. We'll probably have over 7,000 supporters there, which will be brilliant.

"The atmosphere that we had at the game at Anfield was incredible - the support really rallied us. I'm sure it will be likewise up there.

"No matter what stage or what competition, it's always a massive game. And it's one that we're relishing and looking forward to."

The reigning champions suffered a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday, although the Liverpool boss attributed the defeat to the brilliance of their opponents.

"It was more about Manchester City yesterday, it was probably the level of performance that everyone is expecting from them," Rodgers continued.

"The squad that they have accumulated and the quality that they have - that squad is right up there with the best in European football, never mind in this country.

"They performed at a really top level. It was more about them, they were outstanding yesterday."

The Reds enter the fixture having experienced a loss themselves, however, after Southampton ended Rodgers' side's unbeaten opening to the 2013-14 campaign with a 1-0 win at Anfield.

The boss concluded: "There's no doubt after Southampton at the weekend, we haven't felt like that for a long time. So when we did lose the game, and a league game, it was hard to swallow.

"But it's my job to take a step back and look at it. We've got 10 points and we've made an excellent start. We wanted to win, especially our home games at Anfield.

"But we didn't perform and it's as simple as that; I gave credit to Southampton because they played well. For us, we were nowhere near our level.

"That's going to be the season - sometimes it's going to be up and down. All we can ever do is work hard and keep believing.

"What I see in the players and the ambience around the club here, obviously we're disappointed after the result, but everyone is smiling again.

"We're back focused, working hard and knowing this is a season where we'll have those ups and downs. We've just got to make sure, like we have done, when we have a disappointment we bounce back and go again."

Brendan Rodgers has revealed Liverpool will check on the fitness of Daniel Agger ahead of the Reds' trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Agger was withdrawn in the 57th minute during the 1-0 defeat against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

Rodgers explained how the centre-back will be assessed over the next 24 hours to see if he can figure in the Capital One Cup third-round clash.

"We'll see how he is for the game [against Manchester United]," Rodgers told reporters gathered at Melwood.

"He could be a doubt for that game as he has not quite recovered. We wanted to give him time at the weekend, but unfortunately he was struggling with his breathing because he got a knock to his ribs.

"But we'll see. He's a player who makes a good recovery and we'll see over the next 24 hours how he gets on for the game on Wednesday."

Agger was replaced by Jose Enrique during the weekend's defeat against the Saints - and Rodgers was also quizzed on the fitness of the Spaniard ahead of the trip to United.

"We've had to taper his load in training because he's had this niggle now for a few weeks and obviously we're in a period where we have three games this week," said Rodgers.

"We decided to miss him out at the weekend to allow him to be involved over these next couple of games.

"It was just unfortunate that Aly Cissokho was out with injury or else he would have been able to step in and Jose might have been able to rest that wee bit more.

"But he's training and he's fine. We just need to protect his load and the last thing we wanted to do was lose him."

Brendan Rodgers delivered his press conference to the media at Melwood on Monday afternoon ahead of this Wednesday’s League Cup third round tie at Manchester United.

Rodgers has a few injury concerns going into the game with the likes of Glen Johnson, Joe Allen, Philippe Coutinho and Aly Cissokho all definitely out.

Danish international defender Daniel Agger was forced to miss last Monday’s 2-2 draw at Swansea after an overstretching accident in the gym the previous day.

Rodgers told press Agger is still struggling with his rib injury, which forced him off prematurely during Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton on Saturday:

“Agger could be a doubt for the game, he’s not recovered fully. He struggled with his breathing at the weekend.”

Left-back Jose Enrique started the Southampton game on the bench as Rodgers looked to rest him following a knock last week. However, he was called upon as a second half substitute. Rodgers said of the Spaniard:

“Enrique has had a niggle for a few weeks, so we didn’t start him at the weekend. It’s unfortunate that Aly Cissokho is out too. He’ll be available for Wednesday.”

French centre-back Mamadou Sakho filled in for Enrique on the left side of defence against the Saints, but struggled with the wider responsibilities. Expect Enrique to start against United in midweek.

Rodgers has Luis Suarez returning to team selection after 10 matches out – banned for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in a league game at Anfield in April.

Unsurprisingly there were a lot of questions from the press lobbied about Suarez and his attitude to returning after a summer embroiled in a transfer exit disupute with Liverpool.

Rodgers spoke of the Uruguayan’s passion for playing football:

“Suarez lives for the game, he put everything into a behind-closed-doors game against Burnley this week. The period he’s has been out hurt him. But everyone’s been behind him. His commitment and fight for the cause hasn’t changed.

“Suarez has put what happened in the past and we’re all delighted to have him back. He’ll demonstrate his commitment and gratitude to the club for their support in his performances. We’re behind every player.”

Rodgers was also quizzed on how he and the team are going to bounce back from their first defeat of the season on Saturday:

“The Southampton defeat was hard to swallow. We hadn’t lost in a long time. But we didn’t perform – and Southampton played well. All we can ever do is work hard and keep believing. What I see in the players is focus and hard work. We’ll have ups and downs.”

And finally, Rodgers was asked about the sacking of Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio last night, after just five games of the season.

The Northern Irishman questioned the Black Cats’ decision to replace Martoin O’Neil with the Italian if it has failed so quickly:

“I’m surprised by Sunderland’s recruitment policy if it’s gone wrong after 5 games. It’s disappointing to see.”

Manchester United vs Liverpool gets underway at 7.45pm on Wednesday, 25th September 2013.

Karthikeya Ramesh looks at positive problem solving for Liverpool in the wake of their first defeat of the season.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 21, 2013: Liverpool supporters on the Spion Kop look dejected as they watch their side lose 1-0 to Southampton during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

As Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season came to an unceremonious end at Anfield, my mood was one of quiet acceptance. Not rage, not frustration, not even resignation, just deflation. No teeth-gnashing, no howling. We lost. Get on with it and stop brooding.

Let’s face it, this streak had to end sometime. We all knew that Liverpool would sooner or later lose a match. But the foundations for a sustained run of success have been laid – a winning formula has been discovered (no matter how shaky or tenuous): we have a consistent striker, the best goalkeeper in the league and a hard-working midfield trio. We also have a defence that, for all the chopping and changing, has conceded just 3 goals in 5 league matches. We’ve probably had all these for years (substituting Mignolet for Reina), the difference is that now this talent and effort are being translated into three points.

Of course, that does not make this defeat any easier to swallow, and I see several questions manifesting as fellow Reds grope for answers. None of this was foreseeable a week ago, when a very confident Liverpool headed for Swansea after the international break, fresh after four wins – the last coming against Manchester United at Anfield. Two matches later, I’d urge restraint.

It is possible, however, to pinpoint a few talking points and areas Liverpool lack noticeably (and others, not so noticeably).

“Liverpool never deserved to lead the table. We got lucky.”

This is the point I’ve heard most often over the last two days. It is without doubt the strangest, all the more so, because it isn’t from United or Arsenal fans : it is Reds themselves who’ve been emphasizing this opinion all over my Twitter and LinkedIn feed, even before the Southampton match. I’m frankly baffled – the Kop is renowned for its understanding of the finer points of football, but, with all due respect, such a wide-ranging surge of pessimism is uncalled-for.

To put things in perspective, we are hurting because we’ve seen a good start halted after injuries to key personnel. Perhaps because it’s only our 2nd home loss in 2013; perhaps because we haven’t lost home or away in 14 matches, since well before the Suarez suspension. This defeat has left us feeling voided because defeats are rare. And that actually indicates a good trend.

I will stick my neck out here to defend Brendan Rodgers on his strategy of pressing for a lead and then switching to defence. He’s making us harder to beat. Unless it is prompted by performances issues like stamina, I’m quite fine with playing for the scoreboard. This result-oriented mentality is not only welcome, it’s long overdue. It’s time this time started challenging for wins regularly, rather than staying content with an isolated hammering of Norwich or Newcastle. Those criticising this change of mentality quite possibly hail from the same crowd that was dissing the team for not being mentally strong and often letting slip 2 points till last season.

Good teams are not those that play their opposition off the park; it is those that get the points at the end of the day. Football is, whether we like it or not, mostly about the 3 points these days. It is not a sink for romanticism; it is a results-oriented business, where the players are professionals who need to get the result sewn up first and foremost.

Did Liverpool miss Coutinho?

The answer to this is equally straightforward. In his nine months at Liverpool, the Brazilian has unquestionably become our creative fulcrum. Even when he isn’t scoring or assisting goals, he is our most dangerous midfielder and the one most likely to start an attack. The impact of his departure was visible in the last half an hour against Swansea and the entire match against Southampton: Sturridge was forced to sit deep, and had to start attacks as well as climax them. The midfield in turn was forced into a defensive shape.

Coutinho is the principal reason why we’ve been able to play ten matches without Luis Suarez, losing just this once and winning 7 times. This team is clearly a cohesive unit that has developed multiple focal points across the pitch. That said, the Uruguayan’s imminent return in the League Cup tie against Manchester United could not have come at a better time: with Philippe Coutinho injured and Alberto still a novice. To lend the midfield weight and passing ability, Steven Gerrard is forced to play deep – too deep to have any direct impact on the scoreline. A Suarez return would be as welcome as the proverbial manna in the wilderness.

Did we deserve to win the Southampton match?

A resounding ‘no’. And Southampton in turn fully deserved their win. Which brings us to the point : why, if we have pedigree, did we not win?

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 21, 2013: The scoreboard records Liverpool's 1-0 defeat by Southampton during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

At the risk of repetition, our wins in the first 3 matches were not flukes. Yet, the euphoria allowed us to forget all too easily that Liverpool’s strategy still rests on a few basic pillars. And Glen Johnson is one of them. Against Swansea, as an inexperienced Andre Wisdom was repeatedly buffeted by wave after wave of Swansea attack, we realized all too often how crucial the England right-wingback’s role is.

It may sound like an exaggeration, but 5 points have possibly been dropped because of Johnson’s absence. It has unsettled the defence while robbing us of an aggressive forward thrust; Kolo Toure is experienced, but lacks the verve and versatility of Johnson. Against Manchester United Johnson was immense, battling with Patrice Evra (in turn United’s best player on the day) and creating multiple chances. He forced the corner that led to Liverpool’s goal. In possession, he is clear-headed, attacks with speed and precision, and possesses a powerful long-distance shot. In defence, he has vastly improved his tracking back.

Of all the other talking points, none mattered to me more than the penalty not awarded to Sturridge, which provided plenty of fuel for teeth-gnashing and desk-banging of an advanced variety.

It was suggested by one of the talking heads at half-time that Sturridge might have won a penalty had he stayed down rather than attempt to stand and recover the ball. For football’s sake, I hope this assessment is incorrect. It implies that referees decide the quantum of punishment based on the foulee’s reaction rather than the action itself, which makes absolutely no sense. If the man did this, he is either a sightless moron or a retard without any sense of discrimination. I will be kind and say that he was *merely* incompetent. That’s an argument old enough to accept.

Where do we go from here?

To Manchester and another meeting with our old friend David Moyes, of course. After the bulldozer-based massage his team was subjected to on Sunday, he will no doubt want to field his strongest possible team in the midweek clash; he cannot afford to lose to so many rivals so often, and so early in his tenure. That means Wayne Rooney and possibly Shinji Kagawa will be on the field. That suits me fine. I want a good fiery fixture, as long as ESPN behaves itself and screens the matches in India.

But I’m not so optimistic about persisting with a 4-3-3 in Johnson’s absence. It makes no sense without an overlapping full-back. With Shrek Rooney on the field this time, Rodgers should instead go for a 3-5-2 and pack midfield to give Gerrard some breathing space when going forward. For once, we have more momentum going into this fixture. It’s important that we sustain it. Equally important, we must stop the flapping and flailing, and recognize that we are still in control of our season.

Why the end to Liverpool’s unbeaten start counts for squat

Brendan Rodgers accepted that his Liverpool team were far short of their best form on Saturday but is already targeting a similar run to the one which saw the Reds top the Barclays Premier League table.

After kicking off the 2013-14 season with three consecutive victories, followed by a 2-2 draw at Swansea last Monday, Rodgers' side were downed 1-0 by Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

A second-half header from Dejan Lovren handed the Saints three points and brought a conclusion to the Reds' unbeaten and impressive opening to the campaign - their first defeat since losing to the same opponents in March.

"We were nowhere near our level - the result was a big disappointment for us and equally the performance," the manager explained to Liverpoolfc.com after the match.

"We haven't had many days like that since the turn of the year; obviously the last time we lost was against Southampton.

"We just never got going, we were very flat and technically we were a way short of the level we have been at for a long time. So it's disappointing to lose.

"But we'll put it behind us, we'll analyse the game, reflect on it, and hopefully we'll recover well now and look to go on another run."

With Jose Enrique carrying an injury and Glen Johnson on the sidelines, the Northern Irishman opted to utilise Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure in the full-back berths.

On the injuries affecting his defensive options, the boss reflected: "It hasn't helped; we had a regular back four really.

"The players that have come in and been asked to do a job in those full-back positions, Kolo and Mamadou, did very well.

"We've obviously got Glen Johnson out injured, we've got Jose Enrique that we're nursing through an injury that he has, and we've got Aly Cissokho out injured.

"I needed to be careful because if we lose Jose that would disrupt us. It certainly doesn't help the fluency in how we play.

"But still, we've got accomplished players and we had four players on the field that are centre-halves and we conceded from a corner. So that's a disappointment."

The first task on Rodgers' agenda now is to raise spirits within the dressing room ahead of a mouth-watering Capital One Cup clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

"That's part and parcel of it, you've got to do that. We've got a big game now in the cup," he said.

"For 24 hours, it's always difficult - the players are hurting. We've grown in the last six or seven months and this is the first defeat in a long time.

"It's important now that we come together and look to improve on today, because the performance was nowhere near what we expect here - particularly at Anfield - and ensure that we go in with real optimism into our next games."

One general consensus from pundits, writers and fans drawing conclusions from Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat by Southampton on Saturday is that Luis Suarez‘s return to the team couldn’t come soon enough.

Newspapers

The Uruguayan forward is eligible to play for Liverpool on Wednesday night after completing his 10-match band for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic back in April.

It is set up to be explosive. A mid-week League Cup second round tie at arch rivals Manchester United. Add to that United are off the back of a humiliating 4-1 defeat to local rivals Man City and looking for revenge for the Reds’ 1-0 win over them at Anfield earlier this month.

A baptism of fire, if Suarez were indeed to be reborn this week.

But will we see a changed man in the 26-year-old? He hasn’t kicked a ball in English football since scoring a 90th minute equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Anfield last season.

He has though, as this morning’s papers point out, had a lot of time to think over his actions and evaluate himself as a footballer and a man.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 21, 2013: Liverpool's banned Luis Suarez watches the game between Liverpool and Southampton during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Daniel Taylor of the Guardian wonders whether the Suarez that is about to return may have matured a little.

Maybe there will be a greater understanding that he cannot continue undermining his own brilliance at a club that has persistently, sometimes desperately, redrawn the line every time he has crossed it. Or maybe we should just fasten our seatbelts and understand that, at this stage of his professional life, second?guessing Suárez and what he is capable of, both good and bad, is never going to be straightforward.

It’s a great article from Taylor, who also looks at the way Suarez conducted himself during the summer – trying to force through an exit from Anfield, but ultimately being denied.

Now he has been seen singing You’ll Never Walk Alone with his daughter as he watched on at his teammates’ horror show against the Saints at the weekend.

Taylor believes Suarez is such a world class footballer that what he does on the pitch will help any fanbase forgive and forget any actions of disloyalty he may have shown before. He also adds:

Will we ever fully understand him? Probably not. For now, though, he is just probably desperate to get on the pitch again and rid himself of some pent-up frustration. Keep your head down, work hard and concentrate on your football.

But where will Suarez fit into Brendan Rodgers‘ line-up and plethora of attacking quality? Former Reds defender Alan Hansen writes for the Telegraph:

In terms of Suârez linking with Daniel Sturridge, I don’t see this as a major issue because the South American can play anywhere across the front line, left or right. In fact, when you watch Suârez play you’re hard pressed to define his position. He has never been an old-fashioned target man and is not a No 10. He basically floats all over the pitch and is most effective when given the freedom to roam wherever he chooses.

Hansen adds that he believes Suarez will play tucked in behind Daniel Sturridge, with the former Chelsea striker continuing to be the focal point of the attack which has seen him notch up 17 goals in his first 22 appearances for the Reds.

Where that leaves Philippe Coutinho on his return from injury… is not a problem we have to deal with right now.

Dan Holland reflects on a very disappointing day at Anfield and the end of a very encouraging start to the season.

Liverpool 0-1 Southampton

Premier League

Anfield

As I headed to Anfield with air of optimism and a childlike excitement that I hadn’t had for a number of years I was sure that another three points was inevitable and we would retain that top spot. In the very early stages the Kop seemed to mirror these feelings, full of banners and red shirts and a feeling of expectation.

However as we all know this wasn’t to be the case. I may have underestimated this Southampton side and maybe so did the Liverpool squad and management team. Rather than brushing them aside we were faced with an exceptionally well organised defensive side with only their right back (Clyne) struggling with their direct opponent. They also had a highly energetic attacking midfielder who operated between the lines and gave none of our players the time on the ball they craved.

Now Southampton didn’t create many chances and those that were created were of our own doing, but they also limited us to one Victor Moses strike on target and two Steven Gerrard free kicks that were well saved by the Saints number 1. Why was this? Did Brendan Rodgers get his selection wrong? Did we miss Coutinho too much? Whilst they are very valid arguments for both of these points, I believe it to be far more simple, we didn’t play well!

Some of you may think this is far too trivial a reason but I disagree. From back to front in my opinion only two player’s earnt their wages yesterday afternoon (Toure and Moses). Yes Mignolet made some sensational saves but he was often the reason we got caught out, he wanted too long on the ball and his distribution was poor at best. Across the back only Kolo Toure was faultless, he tirelessly worked that right flank without the pace and flair of Johnson yes but those strengths are not in his locker. He was strong in the tackle and he was demanding in his leadership. Agger was unusually sloppy in poession, Skrtel was at fault in the build up to their goal. Sakho was defensively sound but cautious and laboured in attacking areas.

In midfield Lucas was in and out of the game and for the first time this season didn’t look in control of that midfield area. Henderson got caught in possession on a number of occasions but in all fairness what he lacked in creativity he made up for in enthusiasm and determination and was a great outlet when switched to right back. The biggest problem for us in that midfield area was the normally ultra-reliable Steven Gerrard, there was the odd superb pass that we come to expect and of course the two free kicks. But for some reason Stevie appeared uninterested and lethargical all game, there was no encouraging of his troops or lambasting of poor play, now I know this isn’t usually his style but yesterday it was needed and he was found wanting. He was also unusually sloppy with the ball, definitely a bad day at the office and hopefully it was just a one off.

Aspas was anonymous which obviously led to his withdrawal at half time, Sturridge was deprived of the ball for large periods and I may be wrong on this but don’t think he touched the ball in the first 15 minutes of the game, he was however denied a blatant penalty. Moses in the first half was fantastic and his opponent couldn’t live with him, in the 2nd half Southampton identified this and doubled up on him. When Sterling was introduced he was also poor, apart from one run and cross he lacked some basic techniques at vital moments.

All of the above to me identifies why we didn’t win yesterday but let’s look at the other two arguments. Did Brendan Rodgers get it wrong? Maybe but I’m not being too critical as he picked 10 of the eleven I would have picked, I would have picked Kelly ahead of Skrtel and moved Toure inside. Playing 4 centre backs maybe limited us going forward but did Enrique revolutionise things when he came on? No he didn’t. If this squad harbours top 4 aims then that eleven should still be able to beat Southampton.

Did we miss Coutinho? Undoubtedly, as would any other team miss a player playing to the level he has since January. Had Gerrard, Aspas and Henderson offered more of an outlet and better ball retention in ‘the hole’ his absence wouldn’t have been so glaring!

Let’s not over react, let’s not get on the managers back. Let’s stay positive, we are joint third, we have some very winnable fixtures coming up and Suarez is back. He will surely operate in the number 10 role until Coutinho returns; this will give us added flair and creativity. A short report this week because the less said the better but in summary the team didn’t play well and there is nothing Brendan Rodgers could do about that.

Allahu Rabbi.. Selamat Malam..
