Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers savoured “two wonderful moments” after long-range strikes from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho earned a 2-1 win over Manchester City at Anfield.
Henderson rifled in an early opener and Coutinho, making a habit of scoring outstanding goals, provided the winner in the 75th minute after Edin Dzeko had brought City level.
Defeat was a huge blow to City’s hopes of retaining the Premier League title, but boosted Liverpool’s prospects of a top-four finish Rodgers said his players had returned from their Europa League defeat to Besiktas at 4.30am on Friday morning, and had been allowed to sleep through the day, returning to training on Saturday.
“To come out and play like that as they did today, to restrict them to one shot on target – against a top team – I thought the players were incredible. They deserve all the praise they get for the performance and the result,” Rodgers said.
“The character of this team was questioned at the beginning of the season. That was never the case. They’ve worked – and they’re getting the results from that.”
Rodgers added on Sky Sports 1: “To keep it going right the way through 90 minutes, I was so pleased with the players.”
Asked about the Liverpool goals, he said: “It was two wonderful moments.”
“He’s now shooting like a proper Brazilian.”
Liverpool stand fifth, putting a slow start to the Premier League campaign behind them and appearing to have sufficient momentum to seriously challenge Arsenal and Manchester United for a top-four slot.
Henderson said: “We defended well, showed great character when it went back to 1-1, and then Philippe came up with another fantastic goal to win the game for us.
“We’ve got to keep going. Every game is as big as each other. We’ve got another big game against Burnley on Wednesday. We’ve got to keep building and finish strongly.”

After Liverpool’s sensational 2-1 home win over Manchester City on Sunday, Jack Lusby selects five talking points from another Anfield victory.
Liverpool took another big step towards a top-four finish in this season’s Premier League with a massive 2-1 win over title hopefuls Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
Goals from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho gave Liverpool the three points, sandwiching an Edin Dzeko strike—a dominant Reds side deserved this victory.
Liverpool now sit fifth in the league table, just two points from third-placed Manchester United and, perhaps optimistically, now only seven points from City in second.
Here are five talking points from Liverpool’s latest win.
Dejan Lovren Recovers Well from Penalty Miss
With Mamadou Sakho still injured for Sunday’s clash, Lovren continued his role at left centre-back at Anfield and, despite a poor first few touches, the £20 million man grew into the game.
At the heart of proceedings, Lovren made 72 touches of the ball, the same amount as Coutinho and just two less than Henderson, and was able in possession when required.
Facing up to Sergio Aguero—arguably the league’s best centre-forward—running the channels, Lovren coped well, winning five of his six attempted tackles, more than any other Liverpool player.
The return of Sakho will boost Liverpool even further, but Lovren seems a comfortable stand-in after recovering from his midweek disappointment.
Martin Skrtel Excels Again
Serving as a rigid foil to the blossoming Lovren, Martin Skrtel provided another steadfast performance at the heart of the Liverpool defence, in a role that he is making his own.
With the loss of born-leader Sakho, Skrtel has asserted his authority effectively, conducting Lovren and Emre Can when off the ball, and ensuring their faults were covered when required.
This stems from his comfortable style in possession—keeping things simple, mainly—and Skrtel boasted another squad-high passing accuracy of 88.9 percent.
As the deepest lying centre-back, the 30-year-old made sure he was in the right position when City broke through the Liverpool back line.
Skrtel made 12 clearances, more than any other Liverpool player.
Joe Allen Wins Out in Battle With David Silva
Of all of City’s star players, it has perhaps been David Silva who has shone most brightly this season, with Aguero suffering from regular injury issues, Vincent Kompany completely out of form and Yaya Toure inconsistent.
With City’s 4-2-2-2 formation jarring with Liverpool’s 3-4-2-1, there was always the danger of Silva, the Citizens’ creative master, finding space to drift through and feed their onrushing attackers.
Luckily for Rodgers, however, Joe Allen was in exceptional form in the centre of midfield.
Intelligent on and off the ball, and alert at the crucial moments, Allen’s man-marking of Silva—particularly in the second half—was crucial to Liverpool’s dominance.
Allen made three successful tackles and one interception in a performance of all-round mastery.
Adam Lallana Adds a Few Strings to His Bow
Looking at Liverpool’s substitutes’ bench ahead of this fixture, the presence of Fabio Borini, Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini on the seven-man reserve list alarmed many—four strikers?
But the beauty of Brendan Rodgers’ 3-4-2-1 system is that it not only magnifies the brilliance of its individual players by fielding them in their most effective positions, but also suits a malleable approach.
Adam Lallana, enjoying himself in the No. 10 role on Sunday, proved this.
On Sturridge’s introduction, replacing Lazar Markovic on 76 minutes, Lallana moved into the right wing-back role; when Alberto Moreno was withdrawn on 83 minutes, with Kolo Toure moving into defence, Lallana shifted to left wing-back.
In both positions, Lallana looked composed and more involved than either Markovic or Moreno.
One of the most endearing features of Lallana’s game is his work rate, despite misgivings over his match fitness, and the 26-year-old proved he can perform in these positions at Anfield.
Philippe Coutinho Reaps the Benefits of Midweek Rest
Liverpool bowing out to Besiktas in the Europa League was a disappointing landmark within this season—Europe’s second-tier knockout competition was a good shot at silverware for Rodgers.
But, as well as the increased preparation time their exit allows, the rotational approach Rodgers took to this midweek fixture aided Liverpool against City.
Henderson didn’t travel to Turkey due to injury, while Coutinho stayed on Merseyside in order to rest.
Both looked rejuvenated on Sunday, and their presence on the score-sheet is the perfect evidence of this, but Coutinho in particular looked to benefit immensely from this brief rest.
At the heart of every Liverpool attack, Coutinho provided Rodgers’ side with thrust and ingenuity with a man-of-the-match performance.

Liverpool produced a superb display to dispatch of champions Manchester City 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday. We round-up the best social media reaction from the game.
This was arguably the Reds’ finest performance of the season, given the 120 minutes of gruelling football they played against Besiktas on Thursday evening.
Many of those same players were in the team against Manuel Pellegrini’s men, but performed admirably. Stunning efforts from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho gained Brendan Rodgers‘ side all three points, strengthening their top-four aspirations further.
Coutinho was majestic on the day, and a deserved recipient of the Man of the Match award, but special praise also needs to go to Joe Allen, who was quite brilliant in the middle of the park.
Liverpool have now lost just one Premier League game since mid-December, and the turnaround they have made since the turn of the year has been remarkable.
‘nevermind’ on the forums:
Well done lads fantastic second half performance, beautiful strike by Coutino and a special mention to Joe Allen was excellent today, best performance for me in a red shirt.
‘Boston Mick’ on the forums:
Massive team performance. I know there were many many great individual performances, but I for one would like to say that I was really worried when I saw Lovren starting and I thought he did a really good job for us today. “WE GO AGAIN”!
‘ChicagoRed’ on the forums:
Incredible performance from Coutinho and Allen. 10/10. Defensive shape and work is incredible holding to City to one shot on goal. They probably could have done better with a couple of chances at the end, but we survived.
Unbeaten now in 11 matches. Incredible.

Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday, as stunning goals from Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho earned the Reds all three points.
Liverpool 2-1 Manchester City
Premier League – Anfield – Sunday, 1st March 2015
Goals: Henderson (11), Coutinho (75); Dzeko (25)
Pre-match
Liverpool looked to bounce back from their Europa League exit on Thursday night, as champions Manchester City arrived at Anfield in what was a vital game for both teams.
Jordan Henderson returned to the side following injury, along with Philippe Coutinho, Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana. Kolo Toure, Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli were relegated to the bench.
Manuel Pellegrini fielded a formidable team, with Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero all starting proceedings.
First-half
The Reds were ahead after 10 minutes, and it was a sensational goal. Captain Jordan Henderson thundered a magnificent 25-yard effort past Hart and into the top corner of the Anfield Road net, as the home faithful went wild.
Aguero hit the post almost straight after the restart, but Simon Mignolet should really have got to the ball prior to the Argentine’s strike.
City were level after 25 minutes. A clever pass by Aguero found Edin Dzeko, and the Bosnian finished clinically past Mignolet.
The reigning Premier League champions dominated the first-half from that point on, although Lallana did almost give his side the lead again after 34 minutes, but fired wide.
It had been a superb opening 45 minutes full of attacking football, and at the break it was 1-1.
Second-half
Aguero headed over just seconds after the interval, while Raheem Sterling nearly pounced from six yards. Lallana had another goal ruled out, after Martin Skrtel had been in an offside position.
It was all to play for with half an hour remaining, in a game where three points for either side would prove absolutely priceless.
With 15 minutes, Liverpool were ahead again, and it was a another piece of individual genius by Coutinho. The 22-year-old curled a stunning strike past Hart from a wide-left position, arguably eclipsing his goal against Southampton last weekend. It was fully deserved after a dominant second-half.
Sturridge replaced Markovic in the 76th minute, and Toure came on for Alberto Moreno six minutes later, as Rodgers’ men tried to see the game out.
Sturridge had a wonderful chance to finish the game off late on, but shot wide, and Silva missed the target at the other end. Liverpool hung on for a richly deserved win, in what was a fantastic team performance.
