Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes a trip to Old Trafford to face a Manchester United side on a roll is perfect for his players despite their shaky confidence.

Failure to get out of the Champions League group stages following a 1-1 draw against Basle in midweek was a considerable blow to a squad which had looked to have turned a corner, however small, in recent weeks.

Contrast that with United, who are far from at their fluent best but have won five games in a row to lift them into third place in the table.

Defeat for Liverpool this weekend would leave them 10 points adrift of their arch-rivals and put Champions League qualification even further out of sight.

But Rodgers insists facing up to their greatest rivals could be the ideal remedy.

"The game against Manchester United is perfect for us and we hope to take confidence and spirit into the game," he said.

"It's more than a football game – you're representing a city and a group of supporters where there has been a great rivalry over many years.

"You've just got to find the ways to refocus the minds of the players, forget and learn from the experiences, and look at it as an opportunity to go and get onto a winning run.

"You have to be [determined] when you're at a club this size. The expectancy is what you want.

"We're very much focused on improving that performance level. We know that we can do that – we can put a run of results together that can keep us climbing.

"But really we want to keep improving on the performance level. As my teams have shown, we'll get better as the season goes on but we want to start that sooner rather than later."

Unsurprisingly criticism increased after their Champions League failure but Rodgers said they would shrug that off and look to bounce back.

"One thing that we've always had here has been the spirit in the camp," he added.

"No matter what the outside influences, what is spoken and written about, we've always retained that strong mentality and the focus is very much back on getting ourselves sorted for the weekend.

"It was vital we could not dwell on the disappointment for too long."

Having guided the side to within reach of winning the title last season the tables have turned for Rodgers and the Northern Irishman is now third-favourite to be the next boss to lose his job, behind bottom side Leicester's Nigel Pearson and Alan Irvine, whose West Brom team have won just one in nine league matches.

Rodgers built up a considerable amount of credit with owners Fenway Sports Group after last season, which culminated in him being given a new contract, and he is not worried about the Americans wielding the axe just yet.

"One thing I have always had with the owners and the players is solidarity," he said.

"Of course the owners have seen the progress over the last couple of years and like us all are disappointed with performances this season.

"But it is about reinforcing what we have done well in the last couple of years but planning to keep the club moving forward.

"That is the key objective for them and a primary objective for myself."

Liverpool face a tough challenge away to Manchester United on Sunday, and Jack Lusby believes the side should go all-out attack at Old Trafford.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers faces a tough outing on Sunday, as Liverpool visit top-four rivals Manchester United in a hugely important Premier League clash.

Rodgers is under increasingly heavy pressure on Merseyside, with Liverpool currently sat just above the bottom half of the table in ninth.

Meanwhile, in an unfortunate switch from last season, United are flying under new manager Louis van Gaal, and sat third in the Premier League table before this weekend’s fixtures.

This is a game with great history, and holds great weight with both fans and players alike, and could be hugely important as Rodgers looks to regain a foothold in a rocky managerial terrain with the league heading into a busy festive period.

For various tactical reasons, Rodgers must opt for the primarily attacking approach that hallmarked last season’s success, and show no respect to their United rivals on Sunday.

United’s Defence

While Van Gaal strengthened his attack emphatically in the summer, with the signings of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao joining the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, the manager surprisingly ignored a weak defence.

Daley Blind was brought in to serve as a defensive midfielder, while the inconsistent Marcos Rojo joined to operate at left- and centre-back.

However, this wasn’t enough for a side losing the iconic trio of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra.

This has shown even more starkly given United’s innumerable injury issues this season: The side have suffered an incredible 47 different injuries, despite the Premier League being just 15 games old.

This has seen youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair make their United debuts at the back, and the pair boast 13 league appearances between them in 2014/15.

Jonny Evans had to replace Chris Smalling at centre-back in United’s 2-1 victory away to Southampton last time out in the league, with one newly returned player taking the place of a newly injured one.

On Sunday, Phil Jones and Rafael have a chance of featuring at centre-back and right-back respectively, but each have just returned after long lay-offs.

But this lack of match fitness will hamper United’s defence, and this can be targeted—even fully fit, United’s potential back four is full of holes.

This season, United have conceded 17 goals, just two less than Rodgers’ side.

Liverpool’s Defence

As this shows, Liverpool’s defence has been in miserable form this season.

Adding Dejan Lovren to the positional calamity that is Martin Skrtel at centre-back has seen the Reds’ back line look increasingly uncomfortable and error-prone.

The pair have invited opposing attacks onto Simon Mignolet’s goal with a long string of desperate performances in defence.

Lovren even had the gall to criticise the Liverpool midfield after “not receiving enough protection,” according to the Daily Mirror , prior to this encounter.

The form that saw Lovren (debatably) earn his £20 million move to Merseyside in the summer was aided by the diligent protection of Southampton midfielders Victor Wanyama and Morgan Schneiderlin, and at Liverpool it is true that Steven Gerrard doesn’t offer the same support.

However, while even the best centre-backs need protection (see: Thiago Silva protected by Blaise Matuidi at PSG), not every error Lovren has made has been forced.

Furthermore, as Rodgers looked secure qualification to the Champions League group stages against FC Basel on Tuesday night, the manager opted for an experienced, defence-heavy line-up including four central midfielders in Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen.

This failed, as an abject display allowed Basel to amble through on goal time and again, with Fabian Frei’s excellent opener evidence of this.

At this point Liverpool don’t have it in their locker to remain consistently solid in defence.

Although this is nothing new, Rodgers should revert to the ideals that made his side so successful last season.

All-Out Attack

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, October 19, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the third winning goal against Queens Park Rangers during the Premier League match at Loftus Road. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In the build-up to Sunday’s game, Rodgers declared: “My players will be lifted by the challenge of going there.”

“This game is perfect for us. We’ve won our last two games against them and this is always a massive game in the fixture list…We had a great result at Old Trafford last season and a very good performance. We will go there with confidence.”

While the manager would be wise to recognise United’s progress in the Premier League this season, Rodgers is right to show the side little respect, as this rivalry is fierce and long-running.

Last season’s 3-0 victory at Old Trafford is the perfect example of this.

A rampant Luis Suarez inspired a dominant, all-round team performance, with United outclassed in all areas of the pitch.

This served as a scything blow to then-manager David Moyes’ fortunes in Manchester, as this fixture remains the most important on their side’s fixture list in the Premier League.

While that victory was aided by a continually majestic Suarez, Liverpool remain overloaded with effective attacking options as they approach this encounter.

Raheem Sterling looked near to his best against Basel, while a 15-minute cameo by Lazar Markovic showed a glimpse of why Liverpool plumped so ostentatiously for the 20-year-old in the summer; furthermore, Mario Balotelli is in with a chance of featuring after a return from injury.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Liverpool clearly don’t have the defensive stability that could see them aim for a draw away to a top-four rival on Sunday, but luckily neither do United.

Van Gaal’s side are vulnerable at the back, and Liverpool must exploit this to gain a result.

Take this opportunity to record a fearless victory, and repopulate the Kop with smiling faces; after the loss to Basel, this fixture could define Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at Liverpool.

Should Liverpool focus on attack against Manchester United on Sunday? Let us know in the comments below.

Why All-Out Attack is the Best Option for Liverpool Against Manchester United

Brendan Rodgers: His side have won two games out of their last nine.

Brendan Rodgers: His side have won two games out of their last nine.

Brendan Rodgers believes a trip to Old Trafford to face an in-form Manchester United is “perfect” for his Liverpool side to rediscover their confidence.

United have won five games in a row to climb into third spot in the Premier League, while the Merseysiders are lying in mid-table and failed to get out of their Champions League group this week after drawing 1-1 with Basel.

Defeat for the Reds this weekend would leave them 10 points adrift of their arch-rivals and put Champions League qualification even further out of sight.

But Rodgers insists facing United away could be the ideal remedy.

"The game against Manchester United is perfect for us and we hope to take confidence and spirit into the game," he said.

"You've just got to find the ways to refocus the minds of the players, forget and learn from the experiences, and look at it as an opportunity to go and get onto a winning run.

"We're very much focused on improving that performance level. We know that we can do that - we can put a run of results together that can keep us climbing.

"But really we want to keep improving on the performance level. As my teams have shown, we'll get better as the season goes on but we want to start that sooner rather than later."

Having guided the Reds to within reach of winning the title last season the tables have turned for Rodgers, who is now third-favourite to be the next manager to lose his job.

The Northern Irishman, who signed a new contract in May, said he is not worried about the club's American owners wielding the axe.

Brendan Rodgers has insisted he is still the best man for the job at Liverpool after their season took another disappointing turn when they were knocked out of the Champions League by Basle in midweek.

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Sunday lunchtime to face rivals Manchester United, and Rodgers can barely afford another defeat with his team languishing in mid-table.

It is all a far cry from last season, when they took the title race to the last day of the season before finishing second to Manchester City.

Rodgers has borne the brunt of the criticism but said he was working hard to turn the corner.

"I think the message from me is clear: I don't think there would be anyone better to do the job here," he told several national newspapers. "Seven months ago we nearly won the title unexpectedly, I had time to work with players and we took them beyond where the club has been in a long time.

"This has been a difficult start with new players, less coaching time, young players; we are virtually starting again. I don't think there is anybody better equipped to deal with that having been here for the last two and a half years and experienced what this club is about and seeing what we get from the players whenever we are at our best.

"Criticism comes with the territory when you don't win games. Football is very short term. The same people who are criticising me now were maybe saying I couldn't do anything wrong six or seven months ago. That is the way football works. You have to accept that as a manager and fight even harder to bring success. This period has ensured I will do that for sure."

Liverpool have struggled to score goals since the departure of Luis Suarez, with Daniel Sturridge's season to date ruined by injuries and summer signing Mario Balotelli failing to fire.

The Italian has been no stranger to controversy, and has provided written mitigation arguing his case in an attempt to lessen his punishment after accepting a Football Association misconduct charge in relation to making racist and anti-semitic comments on social media.

Balotelli, who could face United after recovering from a groin injury, opted against requesting a personal hearing but Press Association Sport understands the 24-year-old has written to the disciplinary panel to explain his actions.

Balotelli was charged a week ago with breaching FA rule E3(1) as a result of his posting of an image of computer game character Super Mario on Instagram which included the words "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew" and his offence was deemed to be an 'aggravated breach', as defined by rule E3(2), as it included a reference to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality or religion or belief.

Brendan Rodgers: Convinced he can improve Liverpool's fortunes

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes he is still the right man for the job despite seeing his side knocked out of the Champions League in midweek.

Rodgers takes his side to Old Trafford to face rivals Manchester United on Sunday on the back of a 1-1 home draw with Basel which saw the Swiss side advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League at Liverpool’s expense.

Liverpool have gone from a side challenging for the Premier League title last season to one struggling in the wake of Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona.

That left Daniel Sturridge as the club’s main striker but he has been out for most of the current campaign with injury problems and Mario Balotelli has struggled badly for form, but Rodgers insists he can turn things around at Anfield.

"I think the message from me is clear: I don't think there would be anyone better to do the job here," he said.

"Seven months ago we nearly won the title unexpectedly, I had time to work with players and we took them beyond where the club has been in a long time.

"This has been a difficult start with new players, less coaching time, young players; we are virtually starting again.

“I don't think there is anybody better equipped to deal with that having been here for the last two and a half years and experienced what this club is about and seeing what we get from the players whenever we are at our best.

"Criticism comes with the territory when you don't win games. Football is very short term. The same people who are criticising me now were maybe saying I couldn't do anything wrong six or seven months ago. That is the way football works.

“You have to accept that as a manager and fight even harder to bring success. This period has ensured I will do that for sure."

Brendan Rodgers: Convinced he can improve Liverpool's fortunes

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes he is still the right man for the job despite seeing his side knocked out of the Champions League in midweek.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that it “wasn’t through want of trying” that Liverpool failed to sign star quality players in the summer. Ahead of the trip to Old Trafford, Rowan Dix ponders why Liverpool fail to attract the quality of player they desire.

There was a rare turning of the tables in the summer. For once, we had the allure of Champions League and Manchester United didn’t.

However, even without the Champions League incentive, Man Utd still attracted world-class talent in Angel Di Maria and Rademel Falcao, plus up-and-comers like Daley Blind.

And yet, even with Champions League to offer, Liverpool sold its only world-class talent (perhaps unavoidably), and could only attract a clutch of decent “mid-table stars” (from the over-achieving Southampton in particular), a sprinkling of young talent, and as a last resort – arguably one of the most iconically lazy and unprofessional strikers in world football.

Coming off sixth-place, no CL, and a season of ‘crisis and decline’, Man Utd remained an attractive world-class proposition.

But coming off a second-placed title challenge, CL qualification, and glittering headlines about our attractive and dynamic attacking style, Liverpool remained ‘second-tier’ in the eyes of Europe’s top talent.

For whatever reason, Champions League qualification was still nowhere near enough to finally overtake Man Utd in terms of prestige and reputation. Why?

Of course, the comparison goes well beyond Man Utd:

  • Chelsea attracted Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, who are both thriving in the club’s dominant season.

  • Arsenal (who finished five points behind us and got smashed 5-1 at Anfield at the height of our surge) beat us to Alexis Sanchez.

  • The champions Man City, while quieter than others last summer, are able to reach out and snare star players like Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure, when needed.

This is now a 20+ year pattern, through three different owners and seven different managers.

Arguably the last time Liverpool attracted a ready-made world-class player was Fernando Torres for about £20-million in 2007 (still a lot of money at the time – and probably akin to £40-million or more today). That was on the back of two Champions League finals in three years, including the legend of Istanbul.

I haven’t counted Luis Suarez, who arrived for £22.5-million as a promising but unpolished talent, and left as a world-class player three-and-a-half years later.

Both Torres and Suarez arrived amid excitement, came close to winning a title, ultimately couldn’t fulfil their ambitions, and chose to leave for ‘bigger clubs’ after a few years.

By contrast, the quartet of United, City, Chelsea and (to a lesser extent) Arsenal, seem to attract at least one ready-made world-class signing every couple of seasons, as well as going into overdrive with two or three big names when renewal is required. Since Torres signed for Liverpool seven years ago, all of those rivals would’ve signed (and mostly retained) at least four to five would-class players.

So – is it just a question of financial power, and those billionaire clubs consistently out-bidding us with transfer fees? That’s undoubtedly a factor. For example, Di Maria at 60 million was out of our range (except perhaps as a direct in/out for Suarez).

But given that most of these world-class players are going to rival clubs for very matchable fees (eg. Costa – 32-million / Sanchez 30 to 35-million / Fabregas 26-million), I don’t think it’s anywhere near the main reason.

In general, we’re not talking about unmatchable £50-million transfers here. Liverpool’s main signings each season (while of arguably lower calibre) are already approaching those same fees, give or take a final bit of sweetening.

The increasingly-militant Rodgers and FSG haters will predictably lay the blame there – claiming the ‘inexperienced’ manager and hierarchy are appalling judges of talent who somehow lack the wisdom to even spot, appreciate and want these established world-class players in the first place… or that Rodgers lacks the stature and reputation to coerce big egos (compared to Mourinho and Van Gaal, etc)… or that they’re too obsessed with the ‘romantic’ notion of developing our own young talent, to the detriment of the here and now.

Some crazies have even started slagging-off Rodgers because he’s Northern Irish, and must therefore be some kind of stupid, shifty, con-artist who’s full of “blarney”! While I understand the pain of our current plight, that’s just sad, prejudiced loser talk.

And again – I mostly disagree. Whatever criticisms you label at Rodgers and FSG, it’s irrational to suggest they just ‘don’t bother’ trying to sign world-class talent because they’re somehow obsessed by some less ambitious model of success.

There’s no doubt Rodgers would’ve preferred Sanchez to Markovic in the summer. With some sensible offsets, Liverpool could afford the £30 million price. But Sanchez didn’t want to come.

Rodgers would’ve preferred Diego Costa to Balotelli. If you’d used the Balotelli and Lambert fees (and maybe forgo another lower-level signing), and the club could afford him. But Costa chose a ‘bigger club’.

Rodgers would’ve preferred Fabregas to Emre Can. We could surely afford 26-million. But Fabregas chose Chelsea instead.

I’m not saying Rodgers did or didn’t actively target those particular players. I’m simply saying:

A) If targeted as priorities, the club could afford to compete, have a bid accepted, and reach the contract stage with these top-level players.

B) Whatever your other criticisms, Rodgers and FSG are smart enough to know you need at least some special world-class players to compete… and they would’ve tried to sign them.

So – there must be something else going on in the hearts and minds of these top-level players themselves, when presented with the chance to join Liverpool.

As well as Champions League this season, we’ve permanently got more money, more fans, more history, more pedigree, better facilities and more prospects than battling mid-table sides. So why are we competing for the very same players as those mid-table sides instead of attracting the really elite cream?

There must be other reasons why United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal can compel a signature out of the best players in the world (or at the very least – Barca and Real’s excellent but out-of-fashion offcuts), while we’re constantly left settling for promising youngsters and the best players from mid-table sides, in the hope they can step up.

If our failure to sign ready-made world-class talent isn’t explained by lack of money, ambition or effort, it must be something else behind the scenes.

Solve that… and you go a long way to solving Liverpool’s two-decade curse.

Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has accepted a Football Association charge in relation to making racist and anti-semitic comments on social media but has offered mitigation for his actions.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks dejected as his side draw 0-0 with Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Italy international was charged a week ago with breaching FA rule E3(1) as a result of his posting of an image of computer game character Super Mario on Instagram which included the words "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew".

His offence was deemed to be an 'aggravated breach', as defined by rule E3(2), as it included a reference to ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality or religion or belief.

However, the 24-year-old has not requested a personal hearing but has instead submitted written mitigation.

The striker apologised for the posting last week, writing on Twitter: "I apologize if I've offended anyone. The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context (it) may have the opposite effect."

Balotelli deleted the offending post as criticism began to mount but FA guidelines state that "deleting an inappropriate posting, whilst advisable, does not necessarily prevent disciplinary action being taken".

The minimum ban for a race-related on-pitch offence is five matches, but that would not apply in a case such as Balotelli's, for which no specific punishments are outlined.

Liverpool and the striker will hope any punishment is lenient, particularly as he has just returned to training after being sidelined by a groin injury since November 8 and could be in line to rejoin the squad for Sunday's clash against arch-rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mario Balotelli: Argued post was meant to be anti-racist

Sky sources understand Mario Balotelli has accepted a Football Association misconduct charge relating to a social media post this month.

The Liverpool striker was accused of an aggravated rule breach after posting a cartoon message which made reference to racial stereotypes.

Balotelli later apologised and argued the post was meant as a humorous anti-racist message, and it is understood he has submitted written mitigation to that effect. The Italy striker has not requested a personal hearing.

Balotelli has missed Liverpool's last six matches through injury but is in contention to return at Manchester United on Super Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ struggling Liverpool make the short journey along the M62 on Sunday to Old Trafford, where the Reds come head to head for the first time this season against arch rivals Manchester United.

After four days of reflection following the disappointing exit from the Champions League on Tuesday, Liverpool have to pick themselves up and dust themselves down quickly for the huge clash against Louis van Gaal’s side – who, after a similarly poor start, have gone on to win their last five league fixtures in a row and occupy third place in the Premier League table.

It’s a turnaround of form that Rodgers’ men desperately need to replicate if they want to drag themselves back into contention for a top four finish, with the chances of securing Champions League qualification for successive seasons looking increasingly slim on current showing.

The challenging fixture schedule for the remainder of 2014 – which will see Liverpool play their ninth game in three weeks on Sunday and four more to come before the turn of the year – poses another tricky juggling act for the Liverpool manager, who will have to make a number of changes and introduce fresh legs to his side for the crunch clash and there’s a number of changes Rodgers could make.

The Team

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Friday, September 26, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli in action against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Injury news ahead of the clash is that Mario Balotelli could return to the squad having recommenced training, and Kolo Toure – who missed Tuesday night’s match through a groin injury – also trained and could make a comeback to the squad.

It had been revealed that Adam Lallana has been suffering with two cracked ribs which the club chose to keep quiet, but the England international “looks much better” according to Rodgers and is set to be involved on Sunday with shirts up for grabs.

Jose Enrique’s horror 45 minutes on Tuesday that saw him replaced by the infinitely more impressive Alberto Moreno must see the Spanish under-21 international come in to the starting team and at centre back, Mamadou Sakho should be in contention for a starting berth.

Rodgers has rotated Steven Gerrard sensibly over recent weeks, but the Liverpool boss could be tempted to play the inspirational captain for the second match running after he proved to be the man for the big occasion once more, though Lucas Leiva is one player who needs a rest from the Reds midfield.

Despite the harsh red card, Lazar Markovic’s impressive 15 minute cameo provided a rare ray of light on a miserable night, and his promising display could see him brought into the side for his pace and directness in the final third.

Javier Manquillo, Emre Can, Philippe Coutinho, Lallana and Fabio Borini are all available to provide fresh legs to the Liverpool team, having seen their action restricted in the eliminatory draw against Basel and they will be hoping to be given the opportunity to play from the start in Manchester.

The Line Up

A number of selections hang on fitness recovery ahead of the game, but Rodgers must make a number of changes to his side, firstly with the formation, and then with the back four where Moreno and the fit again Sakho should come into the side with Toure touch-and-go – but Javier Manquillo’s recent exclusion makes it unlikely he will replace Glen Johnson.

In a diamond shaped midfield, Lucas’ tiring legs might be afforded a rest and replaced by the powerful Emre Can, and Coutinho and Henderson should make up an energetic but creative midfield behind Gerrard at the tip of the diamond.

Rickie Lambert is in desperate need of rest after six consecutive starts, and he should make way for Raheem Sterling to partner Mario Balotelli, unless the returnee isn’t fit enough to play.

Those changes to the Liverpool side would see the Reds line up like this:

United diamond 2

Rodgers continues to prefer 4-2-3-1 however, and in that line up he has a variety of options, including a mobile and pacey XI like this:

My 4-2-3-1 united

However, in that shape, I’d expect Rodgers to stick to a similar look and therefore with Liverpool’s starting XI looking like this come kick-off on Sunday afternoon:

squad (13)

A trip to Old Trafford to take on your arch rivals isn’t the greatest fixture to have when coming off the back of a deflating night like Tuesday, but Rodgers and his side must bounce back positively and at least produce an improved performance.

Another potential defeat and lacklustre display could have serious consequences for Rodgers but there arguably isn’t a better place to bounce back to winning ways and return to Merseyside with what would be a hugely morale boosting result.

What would your LFC XI be? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers denies there is a growing imbalance between what his club can achieve in the transfer window compared to Manchester United.

However, he accepts their arch-rivals were far more successful in securing big-name signings in the summer than he was with his own targets.

United brought in Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria for close to B£60million, striker Radamel Falcao on loan on reported wages of B£265,000-a-week with a B£43.5million option to buy at the end of the season, midfielder Ander Herrera (B£29million) and left-back Luke Shaw (B£27million) and supplemented them with Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind at a combined B£30million.

Rodgers targeted Alexis Sanchez as his big-money man to replace the departed Luis Suarez but lost out to Arsenal and ultimately spent B£120million on eight acquisitions to strengthen his squad.

But while United's key players have started to kick into gear, putting together a five-match winning run, none of Liverpool's summer arrivals have come close to making such an impact.

Asked whether United's transfer capabilities were now considerably outstripping Liverpool's Rodgers replied: "Not really, no.

"For us at Liverpool we don't compare to anyone, we look to ourselves and all you can do is make sure you remain solid inside of your work.

"There will always be things written on the outside and spoken about by people paid and unpaid to be critics but you can't really affect that.

"They (United) have some outstanding players. They had a good squad before that but they have brought in some very good players and got a very experienced manager leading them.

"But my focus is only on the players we were able to get and work with them."

Questioned about whether, in hindsight, it would have been better to add some top quality rather than just padding out the squad with potential stars of the future Rodgers added: "That is what the club tried to do.

"It wasn't for the want of trying that the club looked to do that but we end up with the squad we have and we will improve those players with the staff like we have done over the last couple of years.

"We believe there is talent which has come into here that will grow over the next number of years to show they are top-class talents.

"Consequently the team will improve."

Rodgers, who has spoken to owners Fenway Sports Group about "a couple of things" associated with potential January transfers, will get a chance to assess one model over the other on Sunday when he takes his side to Old Trafford for a match in which defeat would see them slip 10 points behind the current third-place team.

Having gone out of the Champions League in midweek after failing to beat Basle the Reds boss has found himself under more scrutiny but he insists it is of little consequence for him.

"All you can do is affect what is happening inside your club and on the training ground and work even harder to turn it around and if we can do that then of course the attitude changes," he said.

"The only way you can do that is by winning games and performing well and that is our attitude to move forward for the rest of the season."

The Northern Irishman could be boosted ahead of Sunday with the return of Mario Balotelli, a B£16million summer signing who has not featured since November 8 after sustaining a groin injury on international duty.

Midfielder Adam Lallana is likely to be included despite breaking ribs just over a week ago while defender Kolo Toure is expected to be fit after missing the Basle match with a groin problem.

Joseph Copeland reflects on Liverpool’s Champions League exit and laments what could have been upon The Reds’ return to Europe’s elite.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard looks dejected as they draw 1-1 with FC Basel and are knocked out of the UEFA Champions League and are forced to suffer the ignominy of the Europa League at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Is that it? Is that what we waited all these years for? Following Liverpool’s exit from the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League it was hoped that one of the most decorated clubs in continental history would be back with a vengeance. However, as we all know, that was not the case. Several years of unabashed mediocrity found its way to Anfield.

Liverpool has been blessed with tremendous success in European competition. Whenever they qualify, they are considered among the favourites. Through the years, the Reds have shown the innate ability to get the results they need, regardless of how incredulous it might leave the rest of us. Famous wins over prestigious clubs such as AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid were mixed with heart pounding survival acts against the likes the Chelsea and Olympiakos.

It was these pulsating moments that endeared Liverpool to this competition. Success in the Champions League wasn’t a hope, it was an expectation.

As a result of our rousing 2013-14 campaign, we were once again among the elites of European football. We owned arguably the best player in the world based on that form. He was forming a voracious partnership with perhaps the best young forward in England. Things seemed to be trending up on the red half of Merseyside. We had paid our dues over the last four years and now we were heading back to the top.

Alas, one fateful day during this summer’s World Cup would alter the path of this club. Once Luis Suarez took a bite of yet another opponent, this time on a global stage, he was destined to leave. It is a shame the mercurial Uruguayan wasn’t able to experience the European nights he fought so hard to bring back to Anfield.

The Suarez money was invested on a handful of players that were supposed to bring depth and balance to a side that was without its talisman. One glaring issue among these new arrivals was the obvious lack of experience at the highest level of competition. We neatly brushed this aside with visions of grandeur and the fluid style of play we’d witnessed the season prior. All we had to do was wait for the team to mesh together and we would be contending for the top honour.

Now, after watching this befuddled side stumble into a porous record of 5 points from 6 games, it’s clear that the stage was too much for this team to handle. Brendan Rodgers hasn’t had his finger on the pulse of this team all season, and the tumultuous Champions League showing will do nothing to ease the pressure on the Northern Irishman.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match against FC Basel at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

We can’t put this all on the boss though. The players on the pitch have been underwhelming – to say the least. During Tuesday’s match against Basel, with our Champions League lives on the line, we witnessed 75 minutes of abysmal stuff. This was a team that lacked the fire and passion of Liverpool squads from the past.

It wasn’t until the old war hero stepped up with a stunning free kick that brought back memories of another must win group match a decade ago that you thought the Reds might do it yet again. Unfortunately, there was nothing more to offer this time. Having waited so long to return to this tournament, it is fair to say that the fans and members of this proud club deserved so much more.

It’s not merely the fact that we went out so early, it’s how we went out. If we’d put our best foot forward and pushed until the end, this might not have been so hard to handle. I had no misguided notions of Liverpool topping this group ahead of Real Madrid. Was I so out of line to expect us to garner the necessary points against FC Basel and a Ludogrets side that got in because of a defender stopping penalties? It would appear I was.

Now, with the struggles in the Premier League, it is looking more and more unlikely that Liverpool can reach the top four and get back here next year. Winning the Europa League would accomplish that, but who really thinks we will do so on current form? I most certainly am not getting my hopes up.

The Champions League failure runs much deeper at Liverpool than it would at a multitude of other clubs. A lot of teams would just be happy to qualify. While I was ecstatic when our berth was clinched last spring, I expected a little more success.

Yes, things have changed dramatically from last year’s team. No Suarez, an injured Daniel Sturridge and the lack of cohesion for a side that doesn’t know its own identity. But, this is a no excuse club, so I am positive all of those views will fall on deaf ears.

It was nice to be back after a long hiatus, but I’m not alone in lamenting what could have been. Such a long wait for such a disappointing performance will be tough to overcome. Something must change quickly, or else we could be in for another long absence.

I for one do not want this result to be my last memory of the Champions League for the next five years. It will be captivating to found out if there is any magic left at Anfield. If there is, someone better find it, and before it’s too late.

No Champions League miracle for Liverpool this time
