Lee Coates perfectly pens the contempt some Liverpool fans have for the England national football team and everything that comes with it — including Roy Hodgson.

STOKE, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 13, 2010: Liverpool's manager Roy Hodgson during the Premiership match against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

I saw an old girlfriend out and about with her new boyfriend. You poor sod. That’s what I thought. I know the nonsense you are putting up with. You really poor sod.

That one disastrous relationship.

Roy Hodgson was Liverpool’s. At the time, we knew we had to get out of it. For all that was true about Liverpool FC, we had to get out of it.

How glad we are that we’re out. We see him with England now. We laugh. We pity. We don’t lament or suffer in the same way that others do. England are England and Liverpool are Liverpool. Leave them to it.

Hodgson flows with tides instead of making waves. England drop positions. One by one, England fall.

Hodgson knows all about the rankings. It’s how he measures football matches. Switzerland (9th) are up next for England (20th). A real underdog story.

It’ll be a miracle if England can get anything out of the game. That’s what Hodgson will tell you. We know this because we had this. We lived through this. It was never about progression with Hodgson. It was about stability. It was about taking one day at a time and just hoping you survived it.

Utopia

“To get a result here would have been utopia.”

Those were Hodgson’s words after losing 2-0 to Everton on October 17th 2010.

“We deserved our point.”

A 2-2 draw at home to Sunderland.

“A famous victory.”

A 1-0 away win at Bolton.

Don’t mistake this as arrogance or right of status. Every team has to continually fight to be the best team they can be. Nobody is guaranteed a comfortable win. The best teams at getting these win the league. This is about setting a benchmark for the players. A benchmark far and above winning 1-0 away to Bolton.

There was never a dream of anything big for Liverpool under Hodgson. Football is a sport. You play to get better and better and better. There’s no room for clinging on.

Hodgson isn’t the sole reason for the indifference in England’s performances on Merseyside. England is the reason. As a port city, Liverpool’s identity was formed on the personalities that graced it from Ireland, from Wales, from abroad, from anywhere.

A natural construction of community and social integration, Liverpool lived in England but adopted little from it.

This attitude was returned from recent governments. Margaret Thatcher didn’t believe Liverpool was part of England. She broke the United Kingdom into a million shards but only picked up a choice few pieces. The rest were swept up and cast aside. Liverpool received nothing from its parent.

In the 1960s, The Kop was a stage show based on Liverpool and its people. The city (or half of it) coming together and believing in one thing. There was nothing like it in the country. It was Scouse, not English.

The songs were local. The humour was local. Bill Shankly described The Kop as one extended family. It is. It’s everything a country should be but everything that England isn’t. A country with no unity. England’s football team goes through the motions without any direction, passion or even general interest in its occurrence.

Shankly also claimed Liverpool is a holy trinity of players, manager and supporters. This is why we support Liverpool. This is something we all believe in. It’s a setup that alludes Hodgson and his football teams. Conflict exists with Hodgson. There’s no agreements. Levels are uneven. They know where they stand but they don’t know where they are going.

The England football team compromises Liverpool and that’s something we must accept. The more Hodgson ‘tests Sturridge’s resolve’ by playing him through injuries, the more our resentment is tested.

There’s nothing we can do about it. All we can do is wait. We wait until these disjointed, lethargic and lame lions have feigned interest in their white shirt and they return to their clubs.

Then we see the red again. The magnificent red of Liverpool FC and the holy trinity back together in the presence of The Kop singing its very own national anthem.

Liverpool youth academy director Alex Inglethorpe has given some interesting background to the club’s use of football’s loan system, particularly in developing young players.

ANFIELD, ENGLAND - Friday, May 2, 2014: Liverpool's reserve team head coach Alex Inglethorpe looks dejected as he see his side lose 1-0 to Manchester United during the Under 21 FA Premier League Semi-Final match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Reds have 11 players out on loan for the rest of 2014/15, including young players in Luis Alberto (Malaga), Andre Wisdom (West Brom), Divock Origi (Lille), Tiago Ilori (Bordeaux), Brad Smith (Swindon Town), Joao Carlos Teixeira (Brighton), Rafa Paez (Bologna) and Jordon Ibe (Derby County).

Speaking to the club’s official website, Inglethorpe explained that the opportunity to send players on loan to other clubs allows them to gain valuable experience that vital to their development.

He also revealed that the club carefully select the clubs they believe will nurture Liverpool’s stars of the future.

“We have a wishlist of clubs, and managers, who we think are particularly strong in the area of youth development,” said Inglethorpe.

“The important thing is that when a player goes on loan, he is going to an environment which will teach similar things to what he would be learning at Liverpool.

“There are a lot more clubs in the Football League now who are committed to a philosophy and a way of playing which is conducive to youth development, and the loan system is something which enables us to tap into that.

“There is no shame in a 19 or 20-year-old being unable to crack the Liverpool first team straight away, so that is when the loan system comes in.”

21-year-old Wisdom enjoyed a successful loan spell at Derby last season, and his loan to fellow Premier League club West Brom this year can only be of benefit to the Reds.

Derby’s positive handling of Wisdom has lead to Liverpool to loaning 18-year-old starlet Jordon Ibe to Steve McLaren’s side this season, whilst former Liverpool defender and now Brighton manager Sami Hyypia is mentoring highly-rated Teixeira.

Inglethorpe added, “If there isn’t a chance for boys in particular seasons, then they may need to go on loan and adapt somewhere else, and arm their footballing CV with something more than just U21 football, which will then suggest to the manager that they are ready to be given a chance, and to take it.

“We’ve already had a bit of success with the system, and we expect there will be more in the coming years too.”

Joe Allen has enjoyed a fine start to the season and his importance in the squad will increase this season, writes Aaron Cutler.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Joe Allen in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Joe Allen has, by his own admission, endured a frustrating spell on Mersyside. Punctuated by injuries, inconsistency and misfortune his has proven a curious case; a Liverpool career yet to truly catch fire.

Seen as the first significant cog in Brendan Rodgers‘ sizeable re-build, the former Swansea man was bought on the premise of ball retention, quick transition and an eye for a pass.

High hopes were ratcheted considerably by the unhelpful and quite frankly absurd moniker bestowed by Rodgers himself. His now infamous ‘Welsh Xavi’ tag became a cross to bear, albeit one only aired courtesy of the misjudged Being: Liverpool series.

New Season Tenacity

Having weathered two years of stop-start football it is only now that Allen threatens to come into his own. Re-energised, the Wales international has fared as well as anyone in the Reds opening three games.

Often accused of executing short, risk-free passes many supporters overlook his all round contribution to the team. In last Sunday’s impressive victory, Allen made as many tackles as anyone on the park. By no means a one off, he featured in the top three (successful) tacklers during a debut Premier League campaign with The Swans. That tenacity and work-rate is not only endearing but essential given the current state of our midfield.

Steven Gerrard, for all his majesty, is never going to master the responsibility of an out-and-out Defensive Midfielder. Slow on the turn, he can be exposed if isolated in that role. Southampton capitalised on such frailties, where a hapless Lucas offered little if no support as Gerrard sought to push on and – instinctively – influence matters higher up the field.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Joe Allen in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

What Allen and Jordan Henderson provide is cover. On those occasions where discipline (and legs) betray the captain one or the other is on-hand to plug that precarious gap.

Between them they have the stamina to not only support Gerrard but break forward and contribute to the counter-attack themselves. Last weekend Henderson burst into the box to assist the first, Allen to win a penalty and thus facilitate the second.

A diamond suits the latter perfectly. It was to this system that Rodgers reverted against Saints, Allen’s introduction changing the game and gifting Liverpool a much needed foot-hold. Economical in possession he at least possesses the mobility and game intelligence to crop-up further afield, something Lucas has never acquired.

Importance

An automatic starter? Maybe not but make no mistake, Joe Allen is a key member of this squad. Those quick to dismiss his quality are suspected armchair supporters. Indeed, a litmus test on sporting intelligence can be taken simply by asking fans their opinion of our impish dynamo. This is a real footballer and someone Liverpool will rely upon with a hike in competitive games forthcoming.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, April 27, 2014: Liverpool's Joe Allen in action against Chelsea during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The imminent return of Adam Lallana has led many to speculate a would-be fall guy. Currently in possession of the shirt, it would be harsh and unwarranted should Allen fall by the sword for the visit of Aston Villa. But weight in numbers is a definite blessing given the dearth of options in reserve last term. Turning to one of Victor Moses or Iago Aspas to alter a game is like asking Ray Wilkins to recommend a good barber. We ultimately paid that price.

A cultured footballer, Allen will come into his own on Europe’s biggest stage. Retaining the ball in the Champions League is essential, particularly in hostile environments such as FC Basel’s St. Jakob Park.

Liverpool’s gung-ho style is much loved but game intelligence will prove important in tense arenas. The We Attack, You Attack mantra is a reckless one and punishable by superior opponents.

Control the ball, silence the crowd, manage the game. Rafa Benitez perfected that art and it will be intriguing to note if Rodgers at least tweaks his customary principles on the continent.

The one area in which Lallana emphatically trumps Allen is goal-getting. To date, the Welshman has netted just three times for Liverpool, only one of which materialised in the Premier League. To estimate an improvement here is bold given THAT MISS at Goodison Park. My personal reaction to this monstrosity almost led to my eviction from an Egyptian bar. That’s another story.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 23, 2013: Liverpool's Joe Allen looks dejected after missing a chance against Everton during the 221st Merseyside Derby Premiership match at Goodison Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Nevertheless, a player capable of arriving late into the box – ala Sunday and Carrow Road last season – should be chipping in more. At 24 there remains time for that figure to spike and indeed the emphasis switches to midfield to compensate for our depleted Suarez tally.

A clean bill of health is deserved and a sustained run in the team will coincide with Allen proving just how good he is. Another Xavi? Obviously not but a selfless midfielder due some recognition.

Early Observations

Elsewhere, our start to the season has been an intriguing one. An opening day victory was fortuitous and indicative of a team unsure of its identity. Inevitable, the post Suarez hangover was always likely to pose uncertainty.

City away was disappointing but not too disparaging given their formidable home record (Stoke aside). Few of the so-called ‘Big Boys’ will leave Eastlands with anything but the tinny sound of Oasis reverberating in their eardrums. That and unerring respect for Joe Hart, a goalkeeper capable of playing through the pain barrier of an itchy scalp. Incredible.

In truth, White Hart Lane was the first throwback to the last season’s breathless style. Notable was how sharper we looked with the diamond deployed and two up front. Debutant Mario Balotelli exerted influence through his sheer presence alone, occupying defenders as Raheem Sterling exuded class at the tip of the midfield.

Variations will no doubt abound. As we know, Brendan employed several systems last season – most of which paid dividends. Nevertheless, Sterling has become the talisman and the key to our success is involving him as much as possible – be it centrally or elsewhere.

Six points from nine is respectable and likely to instil confidence entering a winnable set of fixtures. A positive September would set us up nicely for an exciting season. This month itself takes on added significance as we finally dine at Europe’s top table again. A long time coming, the rewards should taste all the sweeter. Enjoy the banquet.

Liverpool have been dealt another blow courtesy of international football, with midfielder Jordan Henderson limping out of England training on Sunday.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Wednesday, November 17, 2010: England's Jordan Henderson in action against France during the International Friendly match at Wembley Stadium. (Pic by: David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Henderson joins Daniel Sturridge in being injured while in training for Roy Hodgson’s side during this international break.

Sturridge is expected to miss three weeks with a thigh injury, the fourth time he’s been injured while with England in the last two years.

Henderson is now very doubtful for England’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Switzerland on Monday and consequently is a doubt too for Saturday’s Premier League game with Aston Villa at Anfield.

The Guardian write that “Henderson departed nursing a problem with his right ankle after turning away from a tackle but, having been assessed on the pitch by the team’s medical staff, he did at least hobble off unaided”.

The regularity with which players are picking up injuries while in training with England really does suggest that it isn’t just a coincidence and more due to Hodgson’s training methods.

Players such as Sturridge follow personalised training routines while with Liverpool, which aid their fitness and development.

The other frustration is just why international breaks are scheduled so inconveniently early in the season.

Deployed as a centre-back in Germany U21s’ 2-0 victory over Republic of Ireland U21s, Emre Can added another string to his bow, writes Jack Lusby.

With the international break in full flow, thus signals a miserable period for Liverpool fans as a long wait for Premier League action ensues, cruelly so soon after the summer’s inactivity.

The Reds’ England internationals have so far endured a torrid time away with Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions, with the 67-year-old set to blow a casket any time he is presented to a baying media.

However, a host of other Liverpool stars are in action for their respective national teams throughout this break.

Naturally, these sides have performed more admirably.

One outstanding character is summer signing Emre Can, who played the full 90 minutes as Germany’s U21s side ran out 2-0 victors over the Republic of Ireland U21s.

Contrary to the above graphic, Can was deployed as a right-sided centre-back alongside VfL Wolfsburg defender Robin Knoche.

With this performance, the 20-year-old may well have shown a likely restless Brendan Rodgers that he has another string to his bow.

The Performance

Against a mixed bag in the young ROI charges, Can’s performance was dominant.

This is particularly impressive given the creative attacking prowess possessed by Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish, who excelled in the central role.

Throughout the 90 minutes, Can underlined his passing ability, his raw defensive capabilities and his devastating bursting runs through the centre of the field.

3 Forward Run

One such run on two minutes saw the 20-year-old make his way from the central defensive position to a wide right role with terrifying ease.

This is similar to the way in which Can tore through the Spurs midfield, shaking the attentions of Moussa Dembele, in the recent 3-0 victory.

Liverpool need players, particularly defenders, that are front-footed in their approach, and Can continued these forays throughout the 90 minutes, his energy key.

Can’s confidence in possession was evident throughout, with the former Bayer Leverkusen man often adopting the deep-lying role whilst his teammates probed forward.

Accepting and recycling possession with a series of short, sharp passes, Can kept things moving in the early stages; most impressive however, was the way in which the centre-back switch play with a raking, long-range ball to find striker Philip Hoffman on 21 minutes.

2 Long-Range Pass

A particular quality rather reminiscent of Liverpool’s current deep-lying playmaker, Steven Gerrard.

These attacking qualities were paired with a defensive brutality, and this would be paramount should Can be considered a central defensive option for Liverpool this season.

Can was dominant in the air as the ROI switched to a persistent long-ball style of play, as can be seen with a towering header to win the ball ahead of three Irish midfielders on 58 minutes.

4 Towering Header

On the deck, Can was equally as impressive.

Liverpool’s style under Rodgers feature a notorious, high-energy pressing game, and a ruthless pursuit of Ireland’s No. 7, Grealish, on 68 minutes outlined just how suitable Can is to this system.

To cap a great performance, Can utilised his strength to thwart Ireland’s forward Conor Wilkinson as the No. 9 made a dangerous run into the Germany box on 86 minutes.

A meaty block tackle stopped the Bolton Wanderers man in his tracks, and ensured a clean sheet for Horst Hrubesch’s side.

5 Can Standing Tackle

Last season, over 29 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen, Can made an average of 2.6 tackles (T), 1.5 interceptions (I) and 1.5 clearances (C) per game, according to WhoScored.

Comparing this to Dejan Lovren (2T, 2.7I, 7.8C) Mamadou Sakho (1.5T, 1.5I, 7.6C), Martin Skrtel (1.4T, 1.7I, 11.4C) and Kolo Toure (1.7T, 0.8I, 7.4C), Liverpool’s new No. 23 is comparable on all fronts apart from clearances made.

This is understandable given the 20-year-old made just one appearance as a centre-back last season.

Can Versatility

This was a performance that echoed this defensive prowess, but will Can be able to replicate this within a central defensive capacity for Liverpool, if required?

Can as a Centre-Back for Liverpool?

This performance outlined the encouraging prospect of Can as a centre-back for Liverpool, and with the right-hand side of the defence arguably the Reds’ weakest area, the youngster could be a welcome option for Rodgers.

Partnering Lovren with Sakho could well be the way forward for Liverpool, and Skrtel can provide sufficient cover as third-choice, but there remains the potential for Can to oust Toure as de facto fourth choice.

Toure turned down a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor this summer, but will unlikely feature often under Rodgers this season.

Can follows somewhat in the footsteps of the retired Jamie Carragher, taking his famous No. 23 shirt, and the youngster may be deployed in the Englishman’s famed role this season for the Reds.

It should be a limited measure, and it is still early days, despite a promising display outlining a dominant defensive mind and a classy, hurtling attacking prowess.

Nevertheless, the option is there for Rodgers.

Granted this was a prominent display against unconvincing opposition, but perhaps Emre Can has shown Brendan Rodgers that he is capable of filling this position for the Reds in the future.

Can Emre Can overtake Kolo Toure as Liverpool’s fourth-choice centre-back option this season? Let us know in the comments below.
