Jordan Henderson insists there will be no hangover from the season among his Liverpool team-mates as they prepare for England's World Cup campaign.

Henderson is one of five Liverpool players in Roy Hodgson's England squad, along with Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling.

Having pushed Manchester City to the last day of the season in the race for the Premier League title, Henderson is adamant the Liverpool players are taking the positives from the campaign.

Henderson said: "Well, I think obviously after the last game of the season everybody would have been a little disappointed, that's just natural, but at the same time we were very proud of what we achieved in the season and how far we've come on.

"So everybody was delighted by that, the bigger picture if you like. So I think the lads at Liverpool are coming here full of confidence and raring to go for the World Cup."

Meanwhile, the former Sunderland favourite feels his game has developed through playing beside Gerrard on a regular basis under Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

And he reckons his partnership with the Reds captain will benefit the national team as they prepare for the Group D schedule.

Henderson said: "I feel as though since I've been at Liverpool Steve has helped me a lot personally on the field, you just pick up little things when you are training with him and especially when you are playing with him every week. He's really been a help to me and I'm sure a lot of the younger lads as well.

"Hopefully we've just got to keep that relationship going for as long as possible for Liverpool and hopefully we can bring it to England.

"I feel as though I'm improving all the time with the likes of the manager at Liverpool, the players around me and obviously coming here and working with the manager, the staff and the players at England. I feel as though I'm always improving.

"So I've just got to keep working hard, keep believing in myself and just keep doing what I've been doing."

James Milner and Leighton Baines were the only absentees from England training on Tuesday ahead of the friendly with Peru.

Milner missed the session at St George's Park in Burton with a cold and Baines was allowed to leave the squad briefly to deal with a family matter.

England's main injury worries, including Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Phil Jones, were able to take part in training along with Arsenal's Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Wilshere is hoping to use the warm-up games as a platform for the World Cup, having not started a match since March after fracturing his foot in England's friendly against Denmark at Wembley.

The Arsenal midfielder said: "I've been training for a long time now. I'm yet to play a game, but I've been training now for six weeks.

"I'm feeling well. I maybe need a few games, but I'm feeling good. Hopefully I can get some games under my belt before the big kick-off."

PERCINTAAN BIDUANDA LAYANG DENGAN JI FAT.....Aaaaah Mengimbau Nostalgia gua....

Ketika komik ni mencetus fenomenanya dahulu, aku masih lagi Sekolah rendah dekat Gong Badak, Terengganu.

When Jamie Carragher retired at the end of the 2012/13 season he took the rest of Liverpool’s defence with him. At least, that is how it seemed at times over the months that followed.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's captain Jamie Carragher making his 737th and last appearance for Liverpool during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Thankfully, while Liverpool may have missed Carragher on the football field he didn’t disappear from our lives completely, giving us a whole batch of new highlights in his weekly column for the Daily Mail, and on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football with Gary Neville.

With the season now over let’s take a look back at some of those highlights, and reflect on the promise of more ‘Carra moments’ to come.

August 10, 2013

Carra’s first opinion piece was published for the Daily Mail, and it wasn’t what most Liverpool fans wanted to read.

With his former club battling to hold onto their star player, Luis Suarez, the last thing anyone wanted was an article by the previous season’s vice-captain explaining why the player concerned was too good for the club. Under the provocative (part) title “Why Suarez is too good for Liverpool (and Arsenal)…” he at least acknowledged in headline and content what the rest of us were thinking. Why Arsenal?

August 19, 2013

Monday Night Football returned on Sky with Carragher partnering former Mancunian nemesis Gary Neville. During an analysis of Manchester United’s win over Swansea, Carragher elaborated on Robin Van Persie’s movement master class, by explaining how the Dutch striker had similarly outplayed him at Anfield during the 2011-12 season.

This set up some amusing banter between the two pundits. When Neville observed that Van Persie’s movement was akin to having “a burglar in your house” Carragher quickly retorted that Neville would be hiding “under the bed.”

Not to be outdone, Neville quipped “You’d be the burglar” with obvious allusions to the thieving Scouse stereotype.

When the program’s focus switched to Arsenal’s performance against Aston Villa, Carragher’s summed up the gunners transfer policy with the dry observation that “There’s only one section of people overspending at Arsenal – the supporters.”

September 16, 2013

Despite winning rave reviews for their analysis, it was inevitable that Carragher and Neville would cross swords at some point.

When the pair were asked to rank three England legends (Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes), club loyalties were always going to come to the fore. When Carragher suggested that Gerrard and Lampard were better than Scholes, because of their impact in big games, it was hardly surprising that Neville might come out in defence of his old team mate Scholes.

Not exactly a highlight for the pair given the inane nature of the task but a memorable moment nonetheless. It was a moment however that was later eclipsed by Carragher’s finest quote as a media pundit.

After offering his view that full backs are either failed wingers or failed centre backs, his observation that “No-one wants to be a full back as a kid. No-one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville,” left everyone, including Neville in laughter.

December 27, 2013

Christmas came and went, with Liverpool on top of the table, exceeding everyone’s wildest expectations in the process. Despite the club’s great form though the team looked anything but solid at the back. So, when Carragher revealed in his Daily Mail column that Brendan Rodgers had asked him, during preseason, to stay on one more year, Liverpool fans around the globe were left to wonder on the impact of Carra’s fateful decision to say no.

Even worse, under the title ‘If I knew Liverpool would be in the title race I wouldn’t have retired’ Carragher revealed that he had knocked Rodgers back not once, but twice (the first time when Rodgers joined the club and asked Carra to consider joining his coaching staff).

28th April, 2014

In the aftermath of the game that decided the title, Carragher and Neville received more applause for their analysis of Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Anfield. Carragher, for his part, acknowledged the Gerrard mistake for what it was (despite many fans and pundits attempts to downplay this fact), but followed up with the much more interesting observation that Sakho had the space to come forward and pass to Flanagan (instead of Gerrard). In Carragher’s view this is something that a more confident ball player such as Agger would have done.

Another interesting insight was in the way that Chelsea distributed the ball in a direct manner from stoppages to avoid playing the ball into the midfield where Liverpool were so strong. Most importantly of all though he defended the Chelsea game plan and acknowledged that he himself had been required to do similar things when playing for Liverpool.

On the lighter side, a Neville speech “I have a thought process…” was quickly interrupted by Carragher. “You do?” he asked, “when did that happen?”

5th May, 2014

The title race was already over but many of us refused to admit it. At least, that is until Liverpool played Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and threw away a three goal lead. This collapse provided Carragher with the opportunity to analyse an area of the park that he knows best.

Alongside Gary Neville, the two former players dissected Liverpool’s shaky defence and the reasons for the capitulation. For Carragher, no one was spared. Our centre backs were weak mentally. There was a lack of leadership on the pitch. The decision making poor. Some players, Skrtel and Johnson, looked tired.

Perhaps the worst criticism though was saved for Mamadou Sakho whom Carragher observed, always seems to be going backwards in any match that he plays. The French international, Carragher admitted, is a player that always makes him nervous. Many Liverpool fans would probably agree.

What Next?

In partnering Carragher with Neville, Sky have created a punditry team that is sure to be gracing our TV screens for some time. While Carra’s column might not have reached the same heights – whether he is comparing Suarez to Cantona, offering his thoughts on Andy Carroll or advocating Rafael Benitez for Tottenham – his column is nevertheless worth a read due to the personal relationship he has with many of those he is discussing.

If that is not enough meat for your potatoes, you could always amuse yourself by reading the Carra hating comments, written by small minded Manc and Smurf fans, which generally follow any article containing the Carragher name. The man himself might not be playing anymore but rival fans vitriol has no such retirement date.

Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez has suggested that the club may not look to make a 'Galactico' signing this summer.

Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic are just two names to have been strongly linked with the European champions - who have had the transfer tactic of every year bringing in at least one major singing - a Galactico - during Perez's two tenures at the Real helm.

However, whilst admitting he likes good players such as Suarez and Rakitic, Perez is not sure if any new players will arrive.

"I like all good players, but especially those of Real Madrid, but I like them all," he told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

"Luis Suarez? There are many good players, we will keep improving the squad."

Asked about a Galactico signing, he added: "There are not too many, they're all here!"

One Galactico who Perez is delighted with is the most expensive of them all, Gareth Bale - who scored in the Champions League final victory over Atletico Madrid at the weekend.

"One goal is not worth €100million, but Gareth was the best player in the Premier League. The press attacked the player but he has demonstrated his quality at decisive points throughout the season."

A number of the current Real squad have been linked with moves, but Perez insists he is happy to keep hold of his players.

"I am friends with the all the presidents and they all call me when they want a player - but if they called me at this time, I would tell them nobody is for sale - but in football you never know, last year we sold Ozil when nobody expected it - football is like that."

Iker Casillas is one of those linked with a move, as he shared the number one role with Diego Lopez last season.

But Perez again does not see him leaving and said: "I do not think the final in Lisbon was his last match as a Real player."

Perez did not rule out the prospect of selling some squad players such as Alvaro Morata with a view to them returning in the future as they did with full-back Daniel Carvajal.

Joe Urquhart continues the 2014 TEAMtalk Soccers ceremony by handing out the award for the Game of the Season.

The 2013-14 season was one of the most exhilarating and entertaining in recent memory.

The Premier League title race once again went to the final day, the Capital One Cup final swung one way and then another, and the FA Cup final went to extra-time after the underdog looked set to slay the giant.

Here are the games that you, our loyal readers, voted the most memorable of the past nine months.

5. Manchester City 4 Manchester United 1, September 2013:

At number five is the Manchester derby from September. This was arguably David Moyes' first real test as United boss - and oh how he failed.

Having previously lost 1-0 to Liverpool in the weeks before, as well as drawing 0-0 against Chelsea at Old Trafford, the United faithful were keen for a positive result against their rather loud 'noisy neighbours'.

However, Sergio Aguero made easy pickings of the ageing United backline to put City ahead on 16 minutes with a magnificence volley, an early blow that must have had even the most hardened United fan reeling.

So, when Yaya Toure put City 2-0 up on the stroke of half-time, you couldn't help feel that this was the changing of the guard in Manchester.

Sixty-one seconds into the second half maybe Moyes himself realised this too, Aguero again drifting into the box unmarked to ease the ball past a frantic David de Gea to put the hosts three goals to the good.

The rout was completed just three minutes later as Samir Nasri slotted home from six yards out. City didn't just have United on the ropes; they had them on the deck with the referee counting to 10.

A late but brilliant free-kick from Wayne Rooney gave United little consolation as they had been well and truly outplayed by their City rivals, from start to finish City outclassed Moyes' side in every aspect.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing - we now know the struggles that United faced under Moyes in the coming months - but this particular game, more than any, epitomised the Scot's time at Old Trafford.

Lots of misery followed by the slight glimmer of hope that something, maybe something could be done to right the wrongs in the red half of Manchester.

4. Arsenal 3-2 Hull City, May 2014:

Saturday, May 17, Wembley Stadium. The day Arsenal fans had been dreaming of. Nine long years since their 2005 FA Cup triumph over old foes Manchester United.

With haunting memories of the 2011 League Cup final against Birmingham City, Arsenal fans must have been wary the threat a strong Hull City side possessed. And when James Chester reacted quickly to divert Tom Huddlestone's wayward volley into the Arsenal goal after four minutes Gunners fans must have been thinking the worst.

If Arsenal fans were thinking the worst then, lord knows what they made of what happened four minutes later as Curtis Davies was given the freedom of the Arsenal box to place the ball calmly past the onlooking Lukasz Fabianski.

Arsenal were in deep trouble and after only just eight minutes. The hoodoo had seemingly struck again - and this was supposed to be their year, the year they finally reclaimed some long-awaited silverware which many Arsenal fans young and old had been drooling over.

However, Santi Cazorla's stunning set-piece after 17 minutes sparked a historic comeback for the north London club at the home of English football. Cazorla's delightful curling strike evaded the scrambling Alan McGregor and gave Arsenal a glimmer of hope. Maybe, after all, there was something in the Wembley air for Arsenal.

Arsenal probed and pressured Hull City's defence but the long-awaited equaliser did not come until 19 minutes from time from an unlikely source as Laurent Koscielny tapped home from close range to haul his side level.

Full-time came and went with the two sides locked at 2-2 apiece, and extra-time was a nervy affair with neither side wanting to make that fatal error that could cost their team dearly.

Finally, and fittingly, the comeback was completed by arguably Arsenal's player of the season, Aaron Ramsey, as he rifled home a well-struck shot from a brilliant Olivier Giroud back heel - sparking scenes of delirium amongst the Arsenal fans. They had finally done it.

3. Real Madrid 3 Barcelona 4, March 2014:

Often, El Clasico is...well, shall we say, not exactly a classic, but this time boy did it deliver.

In recent times this fixture has had a bad rap for the play-acting, feigning injury etc. but these two Spanish giants don't half produce a good game when they try and play football.

An early strike from Andreas Ineista after seven minutes brought the game to life. This season Barcelona have been, well, very un-Barcelona like. So perhaps it was a slight shock when the Catalans struck first.

However, Real Madrid were not about to lie down in their own backyard after 17 straight wins at the Bernabeu, and a quick-fire double from Karim Benzema after 24 minutes turned the game on its head.

A game that means so much to both sides, it was unusually open, and with just three minutes of the first half remaining Lionel Messi announced himself to the game, drawing Barcelona level heading into the break.

With the game finely poised heading into the second half it didn't take long for Cristiano Ronaldo to get in on the action, Dani Alves' clumsy challenge on Ronaldo himself was deemed just inside the area, although television replays suggested otherwise, and Ronaldo slotted home the resulting penalty kick.

Ten minutes later Neymar broke through the Madrid back line at pace before a slight (very slight, if non-existent) touch from Galacticos skipper Sergio Ramos resulted in a penalty and sending off for the centre-half. Messi did the honours from the spot.

Seven minutes from time Messi sealed his hat-trick and the Barcelona win from the spot again after Ineista was caught in a Xabi Alonso and Daniel Carvajal sandwich after some quick footwork.

Messi wheeled away in delight as he became the second highest scorer in La Liga history, moving ahead of former Real striker Hugo Sanchez onto 236 goals.

The Argentine also became the all-time top scorer in Clasicos with 21 goals, surpassing Real legend Alfredo Di Stefano.

2. Crystal Palace 3 Liverpool 3, May 2014:

Liverpool were three goals to the good with 11 minutes to play at Selhurst Park. You would be mad to bet against a team from that position; even the most hardened gambler would have ticked this one off his slip.

As it transpired it could be an 11 minutes that could haunt Brendan Rodgers, Steven Gerrard and co. for the rest of their lives. Was this the Premier League title that got away?

Chelsea ended Liverpool's 11-game winning run the previous week and put the title back into Manchester City open palms, but it was Crystal Palace who turned those open palms into a clenched fist.

An unmarked Joe Allen nodded Liverpool in front inside 20 minutes as normal service was resumed.

The Reds remained mainly in control, but it wasn't until Daniel Sturridge's second half strike that Liverpool doubled their lead. However, when Raheem Sterling fed Luis Suarez the ball just three minutes later, surely the points were heading back up to Merseyside as the Uruguayan poked the ball past the flailing Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni.

Damien Delaney gave the hosts a glimmer of hope with 11 minutes remaining after his deflected shot flew past Simon Mignolet in the Liverpool goal.

The Crystal Palace ultras couldn't quite believe their luck when three minutes later Dwight Gayle cleverly turned a Yannick Bolasie cross into the Liverpool goal. It was well and truly game on.

The comeback was complete seven minutes later and with just two minutes remaining on the clock. It was the goal that broke Liverpool hearts, reduced Luis Suarez to tears and caused widespread depression across the red half of Liverpool. It was Gayle again that calmly slotted the ball home from 10 yards out to all but end Liverpool's title dream.

A Tony Pulis masterclass which is worthy of second place in this year's Game of the Season awards.

1. Liverpool 3 Manchester City 2, April 2014:

"This does not f**king slip now"...well Steven, you may not have won the Premier League title this season but you have won our coveted Game of the Season award.

As Liverpool and Manchester City took to the Anfield turf to choruses of 'You'll Never Walk Alone', nobody could have predicted the football that was about to unfold in front of our very eyes.

Liverpool made an exhilarating start to the game and were rewarded for their efforts in the sixth minute after Luis Suarez played a phenomenal ball to Raheem Sterling, who showed the experience of a veteran striker to calmly place the ball past Joe Hart in the Manchester City goal.

Anfield erupted when 18 minutes later Martin Skrtel peeled off the front post to guide a Steven Gerrard corner cleverly into the net. Liverpool were rampant.

Manuel Pellegrini made a shrewd change just after half-time, however, bringing James Milner on for the non-existent Jesus Navas.

Milner made his presence felt just seven minutes after coming off the bench as a quick one-two with Yaya Toure saw the England International break through the Liverpool defence to feed the ball back across to David Silva, who slotted home.

It was that man Silva again who drew City level five minutes later - although Glen Johnson was credited with the own goal, it was Silva's clever play that led to the big spenders drawing level.

For all the money in the world it looked like City had Liverpool found out, but it was the hosts who found a second wind, and finally, with twelve minutes to go Philipe Countinho pounced on a Vincent Kompany sliced clearance to put Liverpool back ahead on the field and two points clear in the title race.

Even a late red card for Jordan Hendersen couldn't do anything to dampen the Liverpool spirits as the title swayed towards Merseyside.

As it turned out this season was the one that got away for Liverpool, but they have no doubt produced some brilliant attacking football this season, thrilling hard core supporters and neutrals alike.

A five-goal thriller that produced the highest level of football is a worthy winner of the 2014 Game of the Season.

Congratulations to Liverpool and Manchester City, you have our blessing to produce a game of this standard again.

TEAMtalk Soccers: Game of the Season

Unknown   at  18:44  No comments

Liverpool will start their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Preston North End for the second season in succession.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side will travel to Deepdale for the friendly on July 19th, 3pm kick off.

The two sides contested the ‘Bill Shankly Shield’ last July in a match that Liverpool won 4-0 courtesy of goals from Philippe Coutinho, Jordon Ibe, Raheem Sterling and Iago Aspas.

The match takes place just a week after the World Cup Final, meaning any of Liverpool’s players taking part in the tournament won’t be involved. It could be the first glimpse of any new signings though.

Reports over the weekend claim that The Reds will conclude their pre-season preparations with a high-profile friendly against German side Borussia Dortmund at Anfield.

Full Pre-Season Dates

  • Saturday 19 July – Preston North End v Liverpool – Kick-off 3pm Deepdale

  • Wednesday 23 July – Liverpool v AS Roma – Kick-off 5pm CST at Fenway Park, Boston

  • Sunday 27 July – Liverpool v Olympiacos – Kick-off 5pm CST at Soldier Field Stadium, Chicago

  • Wednesday 30 July – Manchester City v Liverpool – Kick-off 7pm EST at Yankee Stadium, New York

  • Saturday 2 August – Liverpool v AC Milan – Kick-off 6:30pm EST at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte
