Deal Done!

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has rubbished claims Loic Remy's move to Liverpool broke down over a failed medical.

The France striker, 27, was nearing an £8.5million switch to Anfield before the Merseyside club pulled out - amid suggestions there were concerns over his fitness - but Redknapp admitted he is baffled by the news and suggested there were ulterior motives for Liverpool calling off the deal.

Redknapp, who is pleased at the prospect of having the former Marseille forward back with Rangers, told a press conference: "He'll come back here. I only know what I've seen and heard and I don't really know how he's failed a medical.

"He had a stringent medical here, one at Newcastle, one with the French team before the World Cup. He's never had a problem with his fitness - you couldn't meet a fitter lad.

"I don't see there could be any issue with his fitness. Their loss is our gain. I've got a fantastic striker. I said last year he's a striker capable of getting 20 goals in the Premier League and that's what we want him to do. I think he's one of the best strikers in the division.

"It can't be a medical one because he's never been unfit. It's not possible. It certainly didn't make any sense - there has to be another reason. It can't be a medical issue. There must have been some kind of breakdown or they've decided to move in another direction.

"I'm sorry for the boy that his move to Liverpool didn't happen but from my point of view, I've got a great striker back here. In my opinion, he's one of the best strikers at the Premier League. He's a good lad and a good professional.

"Liverpool is a football club that usually handle everything fantastically. I've never dealt with anybody better than them over the years. However, all the talk of the medical doesn't make any sense to me."

QPR had been rumoured to be targeting Watford striker Troy Deeney but Redknapp played down the speculation, adding when asked about the 26-year-old: "He was a player we enquired about and you make lots of enquiries but at the moment, there's nothing happening."

Sell him !

Pendapat peribadi saya, saya amat menghormati kesetiaan Borini.

Swansea City boss Garry Monk is adamant that only an “astronomical” bid could prise striker Wilfried Bony away from the club this summer.

Bony, who is the Swans’ record signing having joined for £12million from Vitesse Arnhem, has been heavily linked with a switch to Liverpool after an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old netted 25 goals in all competitions last season but, despite the reported interest from Anfield, Swansea are yet to receive any bids for the Ivory Coast international

Liverpool’s pursuit may intensify after pulling out of a deal to sign QPR striker Loic Remy, but Monk insists he has no intentions of selling Bony.

"There will be interest in a number of our players - that’s the way it is - but at the end of the day, Wilf is a Swansea City player," he told the South Wales Evening Post.

"Everything that has been said about him this summer has been said in the papers. We are not a paper company, so we'll just deal with the reality.

"At the moment nobody has come in for Wilf and he is our player. But it can't drag on for the whole summer.

"We don't want one of those scenarios where it's going on right up until the last day.

"It has to be made loud and clear what is happening at some point - but at the end of the day he is not for sale unless someone comes in with an astronomical offer, which is the same with every club around the world.

"Unless anyone wants to pay an astronomical fee, he will be going nowhere."

Bony has another three years remaining on his current deal in South Wales and has previously stated that he would be happy to stay.

Monk added: "I've spoken to Wilf. He is a very good guy, a top professional, and fortunately, I get on well with him.

"Every player has ambitions and aspirations. It would be silly for any player to say 'I only want to stay at this club'.

"If a so-called bigger or better club comes along and it's a higher level, then every player is going to do it.

"That's the way it is - that's the football world. But having spoken to him, he knows he is Swansea City player and he knows nothing has happened so far.

"All he wants is to concentrate on what he is doing for Swansea City. That's why he is with the squad (in Devon). If he was thinking about going, he wouldn't be here."

Antoine Griezmann: Closing on a move to Atletico

Antoine Griezmann: Closing on a move to Atletico

Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal to sign France international winger Antoine Griezmann from Real Sociedad.

The 23-year-old was linked with a big-money move to a host of clubs but Primera Division champions Atletico have won the race for the France international.

Atletico announced on their official website: "Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad have reached an agreement for the transfer of Antoine Griezmann.

"The young French footballer will sign a contract with our teams once he passes his medical."

Neither club has confirmed the transfer fee but reports in Spain suggest Atletico have met the 30million euro (£24million) buy-out clause in Griezmann's contract.

Sociedad said in a statement: "The player has the permission of Real Sociedad to undergo his medical in Madrid.

"Real Sociedad want to thank Antoine Griezmann for the professionalism and dedication he has shown during his time at our club, and at the same time wish him the best for the future."

Barclays Premier League trio Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham were among those sides believed to have been keen on Griezmann, along with French outfit Monaco.

However, it is Atletico who have secured his services as the champions look to rebuild after losing several key players from their title-winning side, with Diego Costa, David Villa, Filipe Luis, Adrian Lopez and Thibaut Courtois among those to leave.

Griezmann scored 53 goals in 202 games for Sociedad, who he joined as a 13-year-old, while he has made nine appearance for France including five at this summer's World Cup.

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Liverpool have pulled out of a deal to sign Loic Remy but refused to clarify why the move collapsed.

The QPR striker, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle, had been set to seal an £8.5million move to Anfield after agreeing personal terms.

A delay in confirming the France international as the Reds' fifth summer signing was initially attributed to administrative issues but Sky sources understand Liverpool pulled the plug on medical grounds.

Speaking after his side's 1-0 International Champions Cup win over Olympiakos in Chicago, Rodgers said: "It's very simple, we have decided not to go ahead with the deal.

"It's unfortunate for the player - we're obviously disappointed - but there's nothing more to be said. We move onto other targets."

Remy had been offered the number 7 shirt vacated by Luis Suarez but after watching England team-mates Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge operate in an attacking three alongside new arrival Lazar Markovic, Rodgers remains confident his side already possesses ample firepower.

"Luis Suarez isn't a Liverpool player so I don't need to talk about or reference Luis Suarez," Rodgers told the club's official website.

"I'll just worry about the players I have, who showed in enough games last season and the season before, when we didn't have Luis, that we can score goals. That won't be an issue.

"I've seen a difference in Daniel since he came back; he has obviously got confidence from the World Cup and his season last year.

"I think he's ready to take on the mantle. He got 20-odd goals last season so he's a striker of great value.

"Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he'll go on and finish that.

"We've got good speed. Raheem Sterling is always a threat - he's a joy to watch. I thought those three were really exciting."

Raheem Sterling: Liverpool celebrate his goal

Raheem Sterling: Liverpool celebrate his goal

Raheem Sterling scored a lone early goal as Liverpool claimed a 1-0 pre-season win over Olympiakos in the International Champions Cup.

The England international, deployed in a forward three alongside Daniel Sturridge and new signing Lazar Markovic at Soldier Field in Chicago, beat goalkeeper Balazs Megyeri with a half-volley on the stretch with just five minutes on the clock and that proved enough in the Reds' Pool B opener.

Gevorg Ghazaryan rewarded the Greek side's rally with a blistering strike four minutes after the restart but could only watch his shot crack the goalframe.

And though Andres Samaris seemed set in stoppage-time to ensure the points were shared, his right-footed effort from just outside the box was knocked away by Brad Jones.

Liverpool will next face Manchester City, the side that pipped them to the Premier League title last term by two points, on Wednesday night at New York's Yankee Stadium.

Liverpool overcame Olympiakos by a single goal in Chicago, with Raheem Sterling’s close-range strike the difference between the two sides. The 19-year-old shone throughout, while Lazar Markovic made a promising debut.

Olympiacos 0-1 Liverpool

Friendly / Soldier Field Stadium, Chicago / Sunday, 27th July 2014

Goals: Sterling (5)

By Henry Jackson

Brendan Rodgers gave new signing Lazar Markovic his first start in a Liverpool shirt, with Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge all also playing their first pre-season games of the summer, having returned from an extended post-World Cup break.

Brad Jones, Martin Skrtel and Jose Enrique were the only players who also started in the 1-0 loss to Roma on Wednesday, with Rodgers making a total of eight changes.

It took the Reds just five minutes to break the deadlock. Sturridge’s scuffed shot from the edge of the penalty area fortunately found it’s way to the on-rushing Sterling, and the 19-year-old finished clinically from close-range.

Rodgers’ side continued to dominate the early exchanges.

After a quiet first 20 minutes or so to his Reds career, Markovic won a free-kick in a dangerous area after a fine run. The resulting set-piece culminated in Gerrard firing a shot wide. Shortly after, Sturridge showed quick feet on the right wing, but his eventual shot was erratic.

As the half progressed Liverpool lost their stranglehold on proceedings somewhat- defensively they again looked edgy at times, and the signing of Dejan Lovren is a huge boost in that respect- but they always looked electrifying on the counter attack, with the pace of Henderson, Markovic, Sterling and Sturridge sure to give many Premier League defenders nightmares next season.

The score remained 1-0 until the break, and the Reds were worthy of their lead.

Football - Liverpool FC Preseason Tour 2014 - Olympiacos FC v Liverpool FC

Rodgers made three changes during the interval, with Jack Robinson, Joe Allen and Philippe Coutinho coming on for Jose Enrique, Emre Can and Markovic.

Olympiakos almost equalised just minutes into the second-half, with Gevorg Ghazaryan rattling the crossbar with a fine effort, and Mathieu Dossevi coming close seconds later.

Coates, Martin Kelly and Lucas were all introduced on the hour mark, in place of Toure, Johnson and Gerrard, and it inevitably killed the earlier tempo and fluency of Liverpool’s play.

Coutinho once again oozed class during his 30 minutes on the pitch, display wonderful dribbling skills and creativity. The 22-year-old has surely been the star of the Reds’ pre-season to date.

The Brazilian’s terrific long-range effort with 16 minutes remaining almost doubled Liverpool’s lead, and it was the only shot of real note on the Olympiakos goal in the second-half.

Although the side lacked something in an attacking sense after the break, defensively they were much improved. Martin Skrtel, in particular, was terrific. Just one unfortunate goal conceded in two games in America so far is a positive sign that things will be improved at the back next season. New full-backs remain a priority, however.

Andreas Samiris tested Jones in the dying seconds, while Allen almost put the icing on the cake after good work from Jordan Ibe.

The final whistle blew in Chicago, with the Reds recording their first victory of their USA tour so far. It was a solid, if unspectacular, performance, but one that saw Sterling and Coutinho once again outline what key players they have become at Anfield, and Markovic showing promise on his debut.

Man of the Match: Raheem Sterling

Tactical Overview

Rodgers went with his preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Markovic and Sterling either side of Sturridge, and Henderson and Can offering dynamism alongside the deep-lying Gerrard.

Liverpool: Jones, Johnson (Kelly 60), Skrtel, Toure (Coates 60), Enrique (Robinson 46), Gerrard (Lucas 60), Henderson, Can (Allen 46), Sterling (Ibe 74), Markovic (Coutinho 46), Sturridge (Lambert 74).

Subs not used: Ward, Coady, Peterson

Olympiakos starting XI: Megyeri, Salino, Siovas, Papadopoulos, Abidal, Ghazaryan, N’Dinga, Maniatis, Dossevi, Diamantakos, Saviola

Brendan Rodgers was delighted to welcome Croatian international defender Dejan Lovren to Liverpool and says he will immediately join the club on their tour of the USA.

dejan lovren

Lovren’s £20 million move from Southampton was confirmed by the club on Sunday night, ahead of the Reds’ second game of their USA tour against Olympiacos in Chicago.

The 25-year-old looks set to be Daniel Agger‘s long-term replacement, with the Danish international linked again with a move to Barcelona on Sunday morning.

Combined with Mamadou Sakho, who was signed from Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool now have £38 million worth of talent in the central defence, and Rodgers believe Lovren brings with him a lot of qualities.

“This is a very important signing for us and I’m delighted it’s completed so Dejan can join up with us on our US tour,” the Liverpool manager told the club’s official website.

“He is a commanding and powerful presence and clearly has leadership skills, which is important; he fits the profile of player we are looking for.”

Lovren is the third player to swap St Mary’s for Anfield this summer following the signings of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, whilst he is the fifth new arrival of the summer after the aforementioned, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic.

Lovren will make his first competitive appearance for the Reds against his former club when Liverpool host Southampton on Sunday, August 17th in the Premier League.

Rodgers added, “He is still relatively young, so his peak years are ahead of him and I believe he will improve and progress even further with us.

“I’m looking forward to him arriving and working with us as we continue our preparations for the new season.”

There’s been a mixed response from Liverpool fans on social media on Sunday afternoon following the news that the Reds’ move for Loic Remy is off.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, September 30, 2013: Newcastle United's Loic Remy celebrates scoring the second goal against Everton during the Premiership match at Goodison Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

French international Remy is reported to have failed his medical in the USA ahead the USA of the proposed £8.5 million move from QPR due to a heart condition.

The news is yet to be confirmed by club or player, though many media outlets on both sides of the pond are reporting the news.

BBC Sport‘s Ben Smith writes:

They had planned to give Remy the number seven shirt and he had waited in the US for the best part of a week for the deal to be confirmed. The move will not be resurrected and Remy now faces the prospect of a return to QPR.

The collapse of the deal has provoked reactions of disappointment and confusion amongst some fans:

Liverpool may now look back to the transfer market for an alternative striker, with some fans speculating that French forward Alexandre Lacazette will become Brendan Rodgers‘ new target.

Whilst some believe Rodgers will look again to Swansea City forward Wilfried Bony:

There was some good news for Liverpool on Sunday however, with their £20 million deal for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren set to be completed by Monday, according to Jamie Carragher:

Who would you like to see Liverpool try to sign after missing out on Remy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below, or in our Liverpool FC Forums .

The Reds take on Olympiacos at Chicago’s Soldier Field on Sunday night (kick-off 11pm UK). Keep an eye on This Is Anfield for team news and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for live updates.

The 27-year-old had flown to Boston to undergo his medical and was then given a few days to head to New York, according to The Liverpool Echo.

Liverpool though sort a second opinion on an issue that arose during the medical and have now cancelled the deal because of this.

The news is reported by all the Liverpool based journalists, and rumours on Saturday at The Reds’ training in Chicago have now been confirmed as such.

While no mention of what the issue is has been made, Remy does have a heart condition which has reportedly affected previous potential moves during his career.

Remy, according to The Echo, was due to be handed the number 7 shirt.

Liverpool are expected to identify new targets now and are not thought to want to resurrect the deal for the French striker, write The Guardian.

One piece of good news for Liverpool is that Dejan Lovren’s move has been finalised.

Daniel Agger: Confident Liverpool can cope without Luis Suarez

Daniel Agger: Confident Liverpool can cope without Luis Suarez

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is confident that the departure of Luis Suarez will not affect their Premier League title ambitions next season.

Suarez spearheaded Liverpool's title bid last season as they just missed out to Manchester City for English football's top prize.

The Uruguayan, who scored 31 goals last season and won the PFA Player and Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year prizes, left Liverpool for Barcelona earlier this month for a fee in the region of £75million.

Liverpool have brought in five new faces in the shape of Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic this summer and Agger believes they can help fill the void left by Suarez's departure.

"I don't think the transfer of Suarez is that tough." Agger told Ritzau.

"There are some new (players) who will take over. As soon as big players leave, there will be new ones who will come and some other players will raise their game.

"Hopefully, there will be more additions who will bring some qualities."

Agger's own future at Liverpool has been the subject of speculation this summer with Barcelona thought to be keen on luring the central defender away from Anfield after eight years at the club.
