Following Steven Gerrard‘s decision to join the Los Angeles Galaxy, we speak to the organiser of the LA Liverpool Supporters club.
Q. Brian, as a Liverpool supporter living in LA, I imagine it’s mixed feelings on Gerrard’s move to California?
A. Yes, of course. I think most of us were shocked when news first broke. Afterwards, it was probably a mixture of sadness and excitement to hear that Steven wouldn’t be finishing his career at Liverpool, but given that his mind was made up on a move to the States and that he could end up in LA, we weren’t going to complain. It’s as bittersweet as it can get.
Q. How big is the news of Gerrard’s move?
A. It certainly ins’t at Beckham’s level, but that’s because Stevie’s never been that kind of player – or person, for that matter. He’s low-key. It’s probably at the same level as when Henry and Lampard joined (can we even say that yet?). The LA Galaxy is trending on social media and there’s been a few articles on the LA Times, Yahoo! and so on. It’ll probably pick up some more as news unfolds and when he finally suits up.
Q. Do you get to watch many Galaxy games? How would you describe the league and the quality of play?
A. I used to be a season ticket holder and before that would go to almost every match since the team played its first game. Nowadays, I follow the team on the TV or the pub. I occasionally attend a match.
In terms of the league and quality of play I think most would agree that it’s always improving and growing. The atmosphere is also getting better.
Q. Do you think Gerrard will have a bigger impact than David Beckham did?
A. Yes and no. With Beckham the league was getting a name or superstar, I suppose. The amount of coverage the league, team, and Beckham got was unlike anything the sport had seen in the modern era of this country. No disrespect to David, who is a top professional, quality player, and good person from what many say, but he’s no Steven Gerrard. The league has never had a player like Steven Gerrard. He is the anti-modern player in that he’s not into the superstar thing and is quite low-key.
Those who don’t support Liverpool, but appreciate the sport will appreciate Stevie because of what he’s achieved in his career and how he’s gone about it. Otherwise there will be those who won’t understand what his arrival means. In short and in football terms – he will make an impact. As far as marketing and all that comes with it – who knows.
Q. How might Gerrard fit in to Galaxy’s side? Do you think Bruce Arena will use him as an attacking or holding midfielder?
A. Excellent question – I don’t know. I think the manager has already mentioned that he isn’t concerned about where Stevie will fit simply because of the quality he possesses and what he brings overall. He’s always been able to play just about anywhere. I think both the team and Stevie will be fine wherever it’s decided that he’ll play.
Q. Away from Gerrard’s move, what’s it like being a Liverpool fan on the west coast of America?
A. You need a lot of coffee. Joking aside, I’ve no complaints. It’s probably the same as anywhere else, to be fair. We have a great group of people here who don’t mind waking up early and driving long distances to support the club we love, sing a few tunes, and down a few pints on every matchday. We cheer together, we cry together – we’re always there for Liverpool and each other.
Q. Are you going to get a Galaxy season ticket now to enjoy watching Gerrard play?
A. Already have one! We’re actually organising a ‘KOP block’ with Orange County and San Diego to make sure Stevie feels at home. Anfield West sort of thing! Maybe we can get all the North American OLSC’s to attend Stevie’s first match!

Liverpool could be set to bring Roma star Miralem Pjanic to Anfield in the summer, according to reports, as they look to find a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard.
The skipper’s imminent exit has led to much speculation over who could come in and fill the void left by him, and Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Pjanic could be that man.
The reports claim the Reds have prepared a €30m offer for the Bosnian, earning an annual wage of €4m in the process. That is more than he currently earns at Roma.
The 24-year-old is a superb central midfielder with great technical ability and terrific dribbling skills, as Nikola Mitrovic outlined for This Is Anfield last year, and he would be a great acquisition.
Pjanic has already won 56 caps for Bosnia, and he has been integral to Roma’s success since joining from Lyon in 2011.
Although perhaps not that similar to Gerrard in style, he lacks the Liverpool captain’s drive and passion, but is more aesthetically pleasing, he has the leadership skills and talent to thrive as the Reds’ new talisman.

Steven Gerrard says he chose to join LA Galaxy because of the success the team has had in the past, and is determined to help them win more trophies.
It was announced on Wednesday that the 34-year-old Liverpool midfielder will join Major League Soccer's most successful side in July, by which time the American season will be in full swing.
Los Angeles will be bidding for a fourth title in five seasons and Gerrard has made it clear that he is not planning to take it easy during his time in the States.
"I'm not going over there for a holiday or to endear myself,” said Gerrard. “I'm going over there to win.
“Football is my life and it will continue to be so for another couple of years.
"At this stage of my career, I think the timing is right to move on to a fresh challenge and I'm going to be moving to the most successful team in the United States.
“I still feel like a player, still know I can perform well for the next couple of years, so I want to go in to a setup with a winning mentality, a team that's used to winning and with people that also want to win in the future.
“I can guarantee I will go there and work hard. I’ll make sacrifices and be dedicated to performing at a consistent level.”
Gerrard was courted by Galaxy coach Bruce Arena and team president Chris Klein, and says he was impressed by what they had to say.
Aggressive
"Their pursuing me was very aggressive," he said
"All the talks with them have been very positive. It was them telling me what I wanted to hear, telling me about the winning mentality of the club, about their aims and goals for the future.
"That basically suits me, at this stage of my career. They want success and that's what I want to finish my career. They seem to me like they are winners and that's how I see myself.
“I will be going over to hopefully win some more medals.
“There’s obviously a huge bonus involved in where the LA Galaxy are located as well. That will be nice for my family, to come out of our comfort zone and try something different.
“It is really exciting on and off the pitch but the most important thing is that I go there and it is a success on the pitch.”
After an association of 25 years with Liverpool, Gerrard will be leaving as an all-time great, and he reiterated his desire to return to the club in the future.
“I owe Liverpool fans a lot,” he said. “It has been a privilege to play for them and represent them for all these years.
“I will continue to do that until the end of the season and I’ll give everything I have got within to try and bring some success this season.
“Hopefully, I will come back. That’s the message.
"The relationship with Liverpool doesn't end in the summer. In fact, it will never end.”

LATEST NEWS RUMOUR !!! Penyerang muda Boca Juniors Jonathan Calleri ( 21 thn )...
Mario Balotelli is rumoured to be moving away from Anfield this month, but the chances of it actually happening appear very slim.
According to the Express (via Tuttomercatoweb) , who have a history of printing some fairly false rumours, the 24-year-old will join Olympiacos on loan before the end of the current transfer window.
While Balotelli’s time on Merseyside has been one of extreme disappointment to date, with the former Manchester City man scoring just twice in 17 appearances since joining for £16m from AC Milan, he would surely not be sold given Liverpool’s lack of depth in attack.
With Daniel Sturridge injured- his imminent return doesn’t guarantee he will come back fit and firing straight away- and Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini short of ability at the very top level, Balotelli remains a key part of the squad.
His late cameo against AFC Wimbledon may not have set the world alight, but he still did more in a few minutes than Lambert did in almost 80. He doesn’t justify a starting berth week in, week out, but he is worth persevering with.
It could certainly be argued that the controversial striker may leave Anfield come the summer, especially if his form doesn’t improve, but a January move away makes little sense unless Brendan Rodgers has someone else lined up.

James Milner is reportedly top of Liverpool’s wish-list this summer, as Brendan Rodgers looks to add depth to his squad.
According the Express , not always the most reliable source, the 29-year-old is set to move to Anfield on a free transfer at the end of the season, as the Reds begin life without Steven Gerrard.
Milner has found his first-team opportunities at Manchester City limited because of the quality of players like David Silva, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas, and a change of scenery may well appeal to the former Leeds United man.
The England international would bring undoubted quality and versatility to Liverpool’s squad, something Rodgers always admires in players, and he is capable of thriving in wide attacking areas, central midfield and even full-back if required.
There would be doubts over whether Milner would be a guaranteed starter on Merseyside though, with players like Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson all key players in positions he normally adopts.
That said, the aforementioned quality he would guarantee, which is underrated by many because of his typically English work-ethic, would make him a shrewd acquisition.

RUMOUR Radamel falcao To Real Madrid ? Karim Benzema To Liverpool ? OTAI KPLM
SAH !!! Liverpool akan menentang Bolton Wanderers dalam saingan Piala FA pusin...
A host of top European players are entering the last six months of their contracts this January, and Jack Lusby includes James Milner on a list of five that Liverpool should target.
With the new year comes the January transfer window, but moving into 2015 also introduces another market for depleted sides: the free agent market.
With six months to go on their contract, players are permitted to speak to foreign clubs and officially agree a Bosman transfer for the next season and beyond.
Having spent big in the summer, it can be suggested that manager Brendan Rodgers didn’t fully address the areas that needed strengthening, and furthermore this may suggest that Liverpool have a tight budget this January.
Still, requiring a strong spine, a relatively inexpensive solution for the future can be approaching soon-to-be free agents.
Here, we’ve gone for a balanced selection worthy of gracing any hallowed five-a-side turf, and more than capable of solidifying Rodgers’ ambitions and providing Liverpool’s spine for years to come.
First up, as is clearly paramount for the Reds this season, is a goalkeeper.
Loris Karius (FSV Mainz 05)
Simon Mignolet and Brad Jones are clearly far from up to scratch at Liverpool, and Rodgers needs to find a new No. 1 goalkeeper as soon as possible.
Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius is available on a free transfer in the summer, and the Reds can begin contract talks immediately, with the 21-year-old German looking likely to leave the Bundesliga club on the expiry of his current deal.
A tall, bulky shot-stopper, Karius was touted as a replacement for the departing Pepe Reina last year by Bleacher Report’s Allan Jiang, describing him as “a physically imposing goalkeeper with world-class potential.”
Karius has made 17 Bundesliga appearances this season, conceding 25 goals.
Jiang continues by outlining him as a Manuel Neuer-esque sweeper-keeper: “[Karius] routinely demonstrates his agility by closing down space, which pressurises opposing players into rushed shots.”
Although with Karius just 21, Liverpool may be wise to also seek a more experienced option, but the Mainz hotshot could be an astute move by Rodgers in January.
Other options: Sergio Romero, Jefferson, Beto
Fabian Schar (FC Basel)
With the full-back areas covered for the foreseeable future by the likes of Alberto Moreno, Javier Manquillo, Jon Flanagan and Andre Wisdom, Rodgers would be wise to turn to a new centre-back in the free agent market.
That could come in the form of one of this season’s Champions League opponents: FC Basel man Fabian Schar.
An impressive member of Basel’s back line for years now, despite his youthful 23 years, Schar has made 58 appearances for the Swiss champions.
This season that has included 15 Super League games, and a further six appearances so far in the Champions League; Basel, of course, advanced at Liverpool’s expense.
With this experience, and great scope for potential, a move to Anfield could see Schar develop his swift, aggressive style and become a long-term fixture in Rodgers’ currently shaky defence.
Furthermore, as a natural right-footer Schar would be able to partner Mamadou Sakho, who must be built around as Liverpool advance.
Other options: Andrea Ranocchia, Ron Vlaar, Winston Reid
Sami Khedira (Real Madrid)
This suggestion may be stepping into the realms of fantasy but, with Steven Gerrard announcing a summer move to LA Galaxy this month, Liverpool must step up their attempts to replace the long-serving captain: A free agent in the summer, Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira fits the bill.
The 27-year-old has seen his options increasingly limited at the Bernabeu, compounded by Madrid’s acquisition of compatriot Toni Kroos this summer.
This season Khedira has made just five appearances in La Liga, all as a substitute, amounting to a total of just 66 minutes; although the midfielder has been battling injury concerns, this is a paltry amount for such a phenomenal talent.
An exceptional ball-winner, a graceful ball-player and a devastating force on the move, Khedira is arguably the complete midfielder.
His defensive tendencies would suit Rodgers’ side mostly, as beyond Lucas Leiva the squad lacks an established anchor.
A midfield trio of Khedira, Emre Can and Jordan Henderson should be a mouth-watering prospect for Liverpool fans.
Other options: Nigel de Jong, Stephane Mbia, Mathieu Flamini
James Milner (Manchester City)
Onto a player Liverpool have been consistently linked with this season—and in seasons previous—Manchester City midfielder James Milner would bolster Rodgers’ squad immensely.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini recently claimed “[there is] no news. I hope we will find an arrangement,” underlining his desire to hold on to Milner.
As the manager continued “I think that I have said already what I think about James Milner. He is very useful. He always plays with 100 per cent commitment and intensity,” this highlights just why Rodgers should be targeting the 29-year-old.
Milner’s main strength is his versatility, and within this a remarkable consistency.
Having started in five different positions already this season, Milner has also replaced players in various other positions; the only roles Milner hasn’t played are as goalkeeper and centre-back.
Within this, Milner is a great outlet both in terms of defence and attack, and is an exceptional passer of the ball.
If Liverpool can offer Milner a more regular central role, they stand a chance of poaching the City man.
Other options: Fabian Delph, Mark Noble, Dirk Kuyt
Luiz Adriano (Shakhtar Donetsk)
Injury to Daniel Sturridge, limited options for Mario Balotelli and the ineffective displays of Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini underline why Liverpool need to sign another centre-forward in the future.
It may be another risk, but a move for Shakhtar Donetsk strike Luiz Adriano could be a rewarding move for Rodgers.
In the Ukrainian Premier League this season, Adriano has scored four goals in 13 games.
Adriano’s heroics have mainly come in the Champions League, with five appearances heralding an amazing nine goals.
What is most appealing is Adriano’s playing style, with searing pace, great movement and a poachers’ instinct hallmarking his game.
At 27 years old Adriano would be a ready-made option for Rodgers, and a great deputy for Sturridge as well as a player who would work well in tandem with Liverpool strike.
Other options: Andre-Pierre Gignac, Danny Ings, Sebastian Giovinco
Would these five free signings be right for Liverpool? Let us know in the comments below.

Steven Gerrard says he is determined to compete for trophies during his time at Los Angeles Galaxy.
It was announced on Wednesday that the 34-year-old Liverpool midfielder will join the Major League Soccer side in July, by which time the American season will be at the halfway point.

The Los Angeles Galaxy learned a valuable lesson from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard's past in telling him "what he wanted to hear" in their aggressive pursuit of the midfielder.
The 34-year-old will leave Anfield at the end of this season after confirming he will be joining the reigning Major League Soccer champions in the summer.
Both Gerrard and Galaxy themselves describe the recruitment process as "aggressive", which is in stark contrast to the way Liverpool handled his contract negotiations.
The midfielder admits had the Reds offered him a new contract last summer he would not be bringing an end an association which stretches back to when he was eight years old.
But an extension to his existing deal was not raised with the player until November – after Gerrard had expressed his surprise that no talks had been forthcoming – by which time he had already been told by Brendan Rodgers his playing time would be managed.
Such a tactic had already seen him left on the bench for Liverpool's Champions League match against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu and that, combined with the delay in negotiations, gave interested parties the encouragement they needed to make approaches.
History has shown – most pertinently in his dalliance with Chelsea in 2005 which was only averted after a last-minute intervention by then chief executive Rick Parry – Gerrard needs to feel he is wanted but the current regime, by accident or design, did not heed those lessons.
"Their (the Galaxy's) pursuing me was very aggressive," Gerrard told lagalaxy.com.
"The talks I've had with them have been very positive, they basically told me what I wanted to hear, told me about the winning mentality of the club, what their goals are for the future.
"Having spoken to the manager Bruce Arena and the people above him they are very aggressive and they want success and that is what I want and that is how I want to finish my career.
"I'd like to think I've got the same attitude as the people who have made this signing happen – the manager, the CEO and the owner, they like to see themselves as winners."
Galaxy president Chris Klein said, helped by the backing of owner Philip Anschutz, they went in hard in their targeting of the player.
"The LA Galaxy continue to compete for championships and strive for unparalleled success each year, and signing Steven is another example of Mr Anschutz's continued commitment to the growth of soccer in Los Angeles and North America," he said.
"We were aggressive in our pursuit of Steven and look forward to his contributions to our club both on and off the field."
Having been told his game-time would be reduced over the coming season Gerrard felt he was ready for a move as he still has plenty to offer.
"I think it is time for a fresh challenge in my life," added the midfielder.
"At this stage of my career I think the timing is right to move on, but I still feel like a player.
"I've watched a lot of their games and I still know I can perform well for the next couple of years so I want to go into a set-up with a winning mentality with a team that is used to winning.
"I am not going over there for a holiday or to enjoy myself. I am going there to win; if I win and play well then my life becomes enjoyable."
Gerrard admits he hopes the move will also be beneficial to his family.
"Football is my life and it will continue to be so for the next couple of years," he said.
"There is also a huge bonus involved in terms of where they (Galaxy) are located, that will be nice for my family also.
"The biggest challenge will be settling in. I've lived in Liverpool all my life and am a Scouser through and through.
"But you only get one life and it is important to try different things, new experiences and it is a big thing for my children to take them out of their comfort zone and give them a life experience to allow them to develop as humans as well." PA
