Manager Brendan Rodgers believes the next month will be pivotal to Liverpool's season.
After a disappointing start, the Reds recorded back-to-back wins for the first time in the campaign with victory at Leicester on Wednesday night.
And, because their main rivals for a Champions League spot have also had their own difficulties, achieving their primary aim of finishing in the Barclays Premier League's top four still remains well within their capabilities.
They currently stand just six points off third-placed Southampton and have yet to play anywhere close to their best football, or even field their strongest team, with striker Daniel Sturridge – who has been sent to Los Angeles for two weeks' rehabilitation – not set to return until the new year having not played for the club since August 31.
It leaves Rodgers full of optimism that a good month, starting at home to Sunderland on Saturday and then facing top-four rivals Manchester United and Arsenal in successive weeks, can put them firmly back on track.
"We have a bit of momentum now in terms of results, which breeds confidence in the team and releases what might feel like a little bit of pressure," he said.
"We still have a lot of work to do. There is a long road for us, but we are edging our way there.
"If we get to the halfway point in January and be there or thereabouts I will be pleased with that, considering the start we had in the first 12 games.
"After Crystal Palace (their third successive league defeat last month) it was a real difficult moment.
"The run of games up till that in terms of results and performances just weren't quite there, but the reaction and mentality the players have shown since that says a lot about their character and the determination to do well.
"We are not getting carried away with three (including the Champions League draw against Ludogorets) good performances and results. We just have to keep taking that confidence forward into the next game."
Rodgers has had to make changes, most significantly in midfield, in order to shore up a team which was being beaten too easily.
That has seen the re-emergence of defensive midfielder Lucas Leiva, who for the last 12 months has been linked with a move away, after captain Steven Gerrard was pushed further forward.
"I think when Lucas has played this season he has done extremely well," Rodgers added.
"There is the potential everyone can leave the football club, but we never had any offers for Lucas.
"He is a player who is an important part of our squad, who has real good experience as a Brazil international.
"Last year, unfortunately for him, we played Stevie in that playmaker role because of the players we had at the top of the field, so it wasn't so much a defensive role as we needed someone to initiate attacks.
"In the last few games we have gone with a different structure with having a defensive midfielder and he has offered that protection.
"He is in a good moment, playing very well and long may it continue."
Midfield is also an area where Rodgers is looking for more goals, especially in the absence of Sturridge, and B£20million summer signing Adam Lallana and vice-captain Jordan Henderson duly chipped in during Wednesday's 3-1 win at Leicester.
Lallana has had a stop-start Liverpool career so far, but Rodgers is confident they are now starting to see the best of the England international.
"Some changes in the team and behind that tactically have meant he has missed out in some games, but when he has played he has shown up very well," the Reds boss said.
"He took his goal very well, and he has great work-rate and intensity. I have been delighted with him since he has come in.
"He is a wonderful talent and will make a big impact during his time here.
"It's important the midfielders chip in. It's nice to see the goals starting to pick up and we are becoming a bit more resolute, which is critical for us."

With Liverpool’s crucial Champions League clash with Basel looming, Brendan Rodgers should look at resting some key players and starting some fringe stars for Saturday’s game against Sunderland.
Brendan Rodgers has had a mixed time of things when it comes to rotating his squad this season, and he has a hugely important decision to make on Saturday.
Liverpool face Gus Poyet’s Sunderland at Anfield, and while it is obviously an important game and could represent three victories in a row, the Reds’ next match is their most pivotal of the season so far.
They host Basel in their final Champions League group game, knowing that victory will send them through to the knockout stages. There are three players that Rodgers should rest against Sunderland, but which trio should come in in place of them?
Rested for Basel
The skipper enjoyed a successful return to the side against Leicester on Tuesday, scoring a well-taken goal and currently leading the way in your player ratings.
The 34-year-old is at an age where he must be handled intelligently by Rodgers, as has been much-publicised of late, and resting him for the Sunderland game makes total sense.
It will keep him fresh for the Basel clash, and considering Gerrard’s ability to inspire Liverpool in the biggest games down the years, he should be one of the first names on the team-sheet against the Swiss side. With Manchester United the opponents a week on Sunday, it makes even more sense not to start him on Saturday.
LUCAS LEIVA
Lucas has had something of a second coming in recent weeks, having seemingly been nothing more than a squad player with his best days behind him.
The Brazilian has been recalled for the Reds’ last three matches, and he has probably been their standout player in every game. He was particularly excellent against Leicester, and him occupying a defensive midfield has made Rodgers’ side look far more solid.
The 27-year-old’s injury problems are common knowledge, and in order to be 100 per cent fit and raring to go against Basel, where he will be key, he shouldn’t start on Saturday.
RICKIE LAMBERT
Lambert has had a decent run in the side of late, and barring a pretty insipid display against the Foxes, he has done well.
That performance could definitely be put down to tiredness, having played four matches in 10 days, and the 32-year-old needs a break.
With Mario Balotelli still out injured, Lambert is very much the first-choice striker for the Basel showdown, and it would be madness to start him against Poyet’s men. It would, admittedly, leave Rodgers lacking in attack, but it’s a gamble worth taking.
Replacements
Coutinho has had a frustrating season, finding himself in and out of the Liverpool side and struggling to hit the exceptional heights of 2013/14.
With Gerrard very likely to start proceedings against Basel, it makes total sense for Coutinho to replace him against Sunderland. He is a proven match-winner on his day, and he will be hungry to show that he can force his way into the team for Tuesday’s game.
Having the Brazilian to bring in at the expense of Gerrard highlights the improved squad depth at Anfield this season, and he will be fresh and raring to go.
Can’s Liverpool career is yet to properly ignite, mainly due to injury, but there can be no doubting that the youngster has shown glimpses of his huge potential.
Saturday’s match is the perfect opportunity for him to come in for Lucas, and he would dovetail nicely in a midfield three with Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen.
The 20-year-old German is still too inexperienced to be thrown in at the deep end for a huge Champions League game, and starting him for a winnable game at Anfield is a no-brainer.
Borini has had a strange few months at Anfield. Having tried everything possible to stay at Liverpool in the summer- a number of moves collapsed because the Italian refused to leave- he is now finding himself surplus to requirements. Surely he regrets the decision to stay.
The 23-year-old has featured just five times in the Premier League, and when he has played, his performances have been fairly forgettable in truth.
Saturday could provide the perfect opportunity for Borini to prove himself, however. Lambert shouldn’t start the game, as mentioned, and with Balotelli still out, he is Rodgers’ only option in attack. With Coutinho and Raheem Sterling either side of him, it should be enough to earn all three points against the Black Cats.
Who would you rest against Sunderland, with the Basel game looming? Let us know in the comments section.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has not ruled out taking Anfield’s capacity beyond the 60,000-mark in the future, but insists it does not make financial sense at this stage.
Work begins on Monday on the £100 million-plus redevelopment of the ground’s main stand, which will add about 8,500 seats to the 45,500 currently present.
Phase two of the proposals will see an expansion of the Anfield Road end to take overall capacity to just under 59,000. With a season ticket waiting list stretching into the tens of thousands, it is unlikely to satisfy the demand for match tickets, but Ayre stressed the proposed new numbers fitted the business plan.
“Never say never, people say. I think it is too difficult to answer that question,” Ayre said when asked whether expansion had reached its limit with the latest proposals.
“We have great experience from our owners (Fenway Sports Group) who have achieved something similar at Fenway Park (home of Boston Red Sox baseball team) and we are always looking to improve the stadium and you just don’t know where this thing goes over time.
“We think the capacity we are aiming for ultimately is around the sweet spot for Liverpool – but that could change.
“Sweet spot has a number of points to it: one is the cost to develop and the return on that investment.
“If you spend £40million on a stand and you get 5,000 general admission seats, that takes a long time to get that back, so you have to find a solution and other ways to make that return quicker.
“The 60,000 capacity as a construction cost feels like the right solution to be able to be sustainable and build the business from, so in that regard that is why we feel that is the right number.
“For now we feel we are on the right track and we feel the range of facilities and the quality and authenticity is the right fit for now and years to come.”
In recent weeks, protests over ticket prices have taken place at Anfield and the fact more than half of the new seats in the redeveloped Main Stand will be non-general admission will have done little to assuage those complaining that ordinary fans are being priced out.
The club will meet with supporters’ representatives next week and Ayre is confident they can still keep fans onside.
“We built the economic model on the basis of having a range of prices, as we do today,” he added.
“We have said all along we absolutely recognise there needs to be some affordable pricing and tickets in the stadium and that is the case today, but maybe there can be more of that.
“More importantly for us is people understanding why we increase prices: they have largely increased in line with inflation and, if you look at players’ wages, transfer fees, they are not going down either.
“We always want to try to find the right solutions for our fans.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists he will pick on form rather than price tags as he continues to sideline the most expensive defender in Reds history.
Dejan Lovren joined from Southampton for £20m this summer but has been on the bench for Liverpool's last three games.
Alongside him were summer recruits Emre Can (£10m), Lazar Markovic (£20m) and Alberto Moreno (£12m).
"Dejan has been brilliant. He has taken it like a man," said Rodgers. "He is working hard in training. He knows he will get an opportunity and hopefully he can then take it.
"Picking on form has always been the case and all the players understand that.
"If you look at Martin Skrtel as an example, he didn’t play so much for me during my first year here.
"But we spent a lot of time that season talking about the strengths he had in his game and the areas where he needed to improve.
"After that period, once he got into the team, he was absolutely fantastic. He has been a real rock for us.
"I am sure that Dejan will be exactly the same. Sometimes you need that little bit of time out of the team. I have absolutely no doubt that he will be a very good player for us."

Liverpool host Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday as they begin another busy week in the fixture schedule meaning Brendan Rodgers will have to rotate his side once again. Ben Twelves takes a look at some of the options available to the Liverpool manager.
Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool return to Anfield looking to make it three wins a week when they take on struggling Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, before the much anticipated make or break encounter against Basel.
After a desperately poor period of form, The Reds have improved in the results department at least as they currently sit three games unbeaten in all competitions, but performances still remain far from the vintage Liverpool we have been used to seeing as points are the ultimate priority at this moment in time.
Overcoming a tough Stoke side last weekend and a battling Leicester on Tuesday night will certainly have provided an extremely welcome confidence boost to a fragile squad, and it’s important for Rodgers and his team continue to grind out results until the confident and dominant displays we want to see return.
Sunderland arrive for the game off the back of a 4-1 hammering against title chasing Manchester City on Wednesday night, but with the fixture set to be the fourth in 10 days for Liverpool and with big games to follow in the Champions League before a trip to Old Trafford next Sunday, the Reds manager will certainly have to rotate his squad heavily in order to preserve certain players’ fitness for the testing games ahead.
The Team
With little changing on the injury front and Mario Balotelli still out, Rodgers is set to have the same squad at his disposal as for the last four matches, though Mamadou Sakho’s imminent return to full fitness could see the French international welcomed back to the squad despite the unlikelihood of game time.
Another week consisting of three fixtures means the Liverpool boss will have to make numerous changes for each game and there are a number of decisions to call for the visit of Gus Poyet’s team.
Steven Gerrard came back into the starting XI in midweek after the majority of the weekend off, and it showed as the Liverpool captain produced a much better performance – registering on the score-sheet in the process.
But if one thing has been learnt from the rested and revitalised skipper, it’s that this level of management is the way forward and therefore he should drop back to bench for Saturday’s clash where he should be used if and when needed with Joe Allen, Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho all potential starting candidates.
Plenty of other players could do with a well-earned rest too, including Lucas Leiva and Rickie Lambert who have made the extreme transition of being underused to overused – both completing three and four 90 minutes in a row and that feat means they need a break.
Raheem Sterling looks jaded due to the weight of expectation that he’s found himself under despite his improved recent form, and even though it may be slightly idealistic with Liverpool needing as many of their best players available to continue moving forwards slowly, he could do with a match among the substitutes with Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Coutinho alternative options.
Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure have all featured heavily in the Reds back four, and Rodgers should make changes as best as possible – particularly in full-back positions – to ensure the majority of the squad stay as fresh as they can.
The Line Up
Periods of fixtures in quick succession is about finding the balance between rotating and remaining competitive and Rodgers has a tough job ahead of a demanding week.
However, bringing the energetic Alberto Moreno into the back four from the start will allow Glen Johnson to make way and in midfield both Lucas and Gerrard can drop to the bench with Emre Can and Joe Allen available to come in.
In attack, Sterling could make way for Philippe Coutinho to start but such is Lambert’s improved form and Fabio Borini’s questionable whereabouts, the England striker should retain his place in the starting team, but the Italian must feature on the bench to allow for change as soon as possible.
In a 4-3-3 shape, Liverpool should line up like this on Saturday:
Alternatively, it could be a wise time to bring Borini back into the starting XI against his former club to allow for the nippy 23-year-old’s work-rate and tenacity alongside the tiring Lambert in attack. Therefore Rodgers should consider a return to the diamond formation:
However, in keeping with the Liverpool manager’s favoured 4-2-3-1, this is how I’d expect Liverpool to look come 3pm Saturday:
Another challenging week of three tough fixtures awaits Brendan Rodgers’s slowly improving Liverpool side and with The Reds making small steps on their road to recovery after a dreadful start, it’s important not to lose focus.
Saturday’s game poses a tricky fixture for Rodgers and his team against Sunderland with so many factors to take into consideration ahead of two more crunch fixtures, but following back-to-back wins and an increased confidence, Liverpool must take full advantage of a perfect chance to make it three in a row.
Would you rest Gerrard – and indeed Lucas – with Basel just three days after Sunderland?

Predicting the Liverpool lineup vs Sunderland: To rest Gerrard or not?
