Cristiano Ronaldo: Not thinking about record, according to Carlo Ancelotti

Cristiano Ronaldo: Not thinking about record, according to Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti insists Cristiano Ronaldo is fully focused on the team's requirements and not writing his name into the Champions League history books.

The Portugal international is one goal away from equalling the great Raul's tally of 71 in Europe's elite competition.

If Tuesday's opponents Liverpool display any of the defensive vulnerability they have shown this season, there is every chance the 29-year-old - who scored at Anfield in the meeting a fortnight ago - could surpass that feat at the Bernabeu.

Even the return of fellow forward Gareth Bale after a five-match injury absence is unlikely to take any of the spotlight away from Ronaldo but Ancelotti is not concerned by talk of landmark moments.

"Cristiano is working hard for himself and the side, just like other players," said the coach of the defending champions.

"I don't think he's thinking about the record, he has time - it's not his last game. He is focused on playing for the team."

Bale's comeback gives Liverpool, who were comfortably beaten by three first-half goals at Anfield, an even greater headache.

"Gareth Bale is ready to play and is back from injury. I don't know if he will play from the off or on the bench," added Ancelotti.

While Real have no problems up front - they won 4-0 against Granada at the weekend to take their tally to 37 in 10 matches in the Primera Division - the Reds have been woefully lacking in the injury-enforced absence of last season's second-highest scorer Daniel Sturridge.

Much-maligned striker Mario Balotelli has found the net just twice since his £16million summer move from AC Milan but will be expected to shoulder the burden again at the Bernabeu.

He will hope to last longer than the 45 minutes he did in the first meeting at Anfield, when he caused an outcry among some supporters by swapping shirts with Real defender Pepe as they headed down the tunnel - from which the Italian did not emerge for the second half after manager Brendan Rodgers made a tactical change.

However, Ancelotti sprang to the striker's defence.

"Balotelli is spoken of a lot, maybe too much," he said.

"He has quality and is at a side where they're not playing well having lost (Luis) Suarez, who scored a lot.

"They need another solution but I don't think all of Liveprool's problems are Balotelli.

"He needs to do his work for the side, that's all that can be asked of him - and I don't have problem with shirt-changing."

Louis van Gaal: Has not faced the same criticism as David Moyes

Louis van Gaal: Has not faced the same criticism as David Moyes

Mark Holmes explains why Manchester United are better under Louis van Gaal than David Moyes, and also blasts three unpunished lunge tackles.

United on right track under Van Gaal

It has been suggested in some quarters that Louis van Gaal is rather fortunate to be escaping the sort of criticism that David Moyes was having to deal with at this stage last season.

Manchester United have actually taken four points less from Van Gaal's first 10 Premier League games in charge than they did in Moyes' - and this from arguably a much easier start. Having spent £150million in the summer, there are some that feel Van Gaal should already be under serious pressure.

However, there is a world of difference between him and Moyes.

1) His record with clubs of similar stature has to be taken into consideration, despite cynics arguing it is irrelevant. Whereas there was always a feeling that the United job was too big for Moyes, that is undoubtedly not the case with Van Gaal.

2) The fact that the Dutchman did spend so heavily over the summer is a) proof that he can attract good players to the club and b) a justifiable excuse for the slow start as new players bed in.

3) Despite another defeat in the derby on Sunday, it is not hard to spot the improvement in United's performances in recent weeks. They may have only taken one point, but the Reds matched both Chelsea and City with 11 men on the pitch.

4) It is all part of the job, of course, but it cannot be ignored that Van Gaal has suffered terrible luck with injuries since taking the job, particularly in defence. The injury to Marcos Rojo, just as he was beginning to look the part, is the latest kick in the teeth.

5) Above all else, there is one reason why Van Gaal is not receiving the sort of criticism that Moyes got: the way that United are playing. They are attacking with purpose again, trying to score at every opportunity, and not relying on any one way of creating chances.

Yes, there are problems which Van Gaal needs to resolve, but United do at least look something like themselves again. It won't happen overnight, but once injuries clear up and Van Gaal is able to name a settled side, he will have them challenging for the Champions League again.

Lunging tackle back with a vengeance

You may be aware that a certain national newspaper has begun a 'Hands Off In The Box' campaign (backed, hilariously, by Martin Keown), aimed at drawing attention to what they describe as 'WWE-style behaviour' in penalty areas.

You may also be aware that the back pages of more than one of Monday's newspapers are plastered with pictures of Marouane Fellaini apparently spitting, that dastardly act that the occasional former pro will hilariously describe as worse than a leg-breaking challenge.

That, of course, is a nonsense - give me a bit of spit in the face over a broken leg any day of the week - and while defenders undoubtedly should be penalised for preventing strikers from reaching a ball by holding, it is ridiculous to suggest that every piece of grappling in the box should result in a penalty given the amount of blocking, pulling, pinching, backing in, toe stamping and so on that takes place at the same time. It will never, ever be removed from the game while it remains a physical contact sport.

What is equally ridiculous is that, while newspapers draw attention to these relatively tame infringements, little has been said or written about three extremely dangerous challenges made by Alex Song, Moussa Sissoko and Jan Vertonghen in the Premier League over the weekend.

All three played lunged in with their studs showing. Only through a combination of evasion and fortune did Mame Diouf, Joe Allen and Ashley Westwood avoid injuries as the victims of the challenges but, because they did escape unharmed, all three challenges will quickly be forgotten about, with the offenders' reputations unscathed.

While Christian Benteke sits out the next three games for reacting to Ryan Mason provocation with a soft hand in the face, Song, Sissoko and Vertonghen are free to help out their teams.

If a national newspaper wants to start a genuinely useful campaign, how about one which puts pressure on the Football Association to ensure players are punished heavily for these sorts of dangerous tackles, regardless of whether an injury is caused.

Ferdinand ban ridiculous

On the subject of disproportionate punishments, it really is laughable that QPR's Rio Ferdinand is currently serving a three-game suspension for using mildly-offensive language in response to a Twitter troll.

Footballers are supposed to be good role models...blah, blah, blah...but Ferdinand can certainly be forgiven for believing he has been picked on (again) given the way the FA handled the Malky Mackay/Iain Moody and David Elleray cases.

Yes, what Ferdinand wrote was seen by vastly more people than that written by Mackay and Moody in private texts but what he said was also significantly less offensive. And as Ferdinand's team-mate Joey Barton pointed out, perhaps the FA should publish a list of banned words on social media and the requisite punishments for using any of them.

As Barton also pointed out, a three-game ban puts Ferdinand's actions on a par with violent conduct. But as the Song, Sissoko and Vertonghen look set to go unpunished, perhaps we are getting an understanding of the FA's priorities.

1) Marco Reus

2) Gonzalo Hinguain

Korang rasa camner? skuad yang dibeli BR sebenarnya cukup untuk dapatkan 1 team full dengan barisan simpanan sekali, cuma most of pembelian not on form so far. Injuries, Loan, dan Failure to Adapt Tacktical buat masa ni jadi penghalang Liverpool, communication gak.

MY HIDDEN LETTER TO STEVEN GERRARD ! - from Axello

TAJUK AKHBAR :STEVE GERRARD TO MANCHESTER CITY.

PHUIIII!!!

Tapi , adakh boyhood

fans yg meminati kelab bandar mereka seistimewa Gerrard ???

Time is running OUT. Dalam situasi Liverpool yang ada sekarang, saya tanpa bias menyatakan tidak ada peluang untuk menang BPL terutama musim ini

dan Gerrard dah semakin dimamah usia.

SAYA RASA LEBIH MULIA GERRARD MEMENANGINYA DENGAN MAN CITY BERBANDING OWEN YANG MEMENANGINYA DENGAN MAN UTD. Mengambil kira rivalry isu.

U always the best Liverpool player and captain walaupun legend lain ada 3/4 league title. Tapi anda tetap mahu bersama kami. Steve Gerrard!

Daniel Sturridge‘s return, whenever that finally is, and a return to the diamond shape in midfield will offer Brendan Rodgers the opportunity to repair the early season misery, writes Alex Saldanha.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 4, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers against West Bromwich Albion during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Ten games into the new season and Liverpool have accrued a miserly 14 points and sit in the lowly position of seventh in the table. Put into context, if Liverpool were to continue in this vain they would finish with only 53 points (31 points less than last season’s tally of 84) a total that would have placed them in eighth position last season.

The Reds are currently experiencing problems all over the pitch: in the ten games so far they have conceded 13 goals, with only two clean sheets, showing little improvement on last season’s patchy defensive efforts.

Going forwards Brendan Rodgers’ men have only scored 13 goals and it is here where the major problem lies. Last season with the brilliant Luis Suarez – Daniel Sturridge partnership up front Liverpool were averaging 2.66 goals per game, scoring so many that the defence’s deficiencies were irrelevant. Now Liverpool score on average less than half of that total: without these goals compensating for the defence’s flaws Liverpool and dropping points at an alarming rate.

Sturridge Absence

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It is for this reason that Sturridge must now be seen as key to the Reds’ season: once he steps on to the pitch the Reds’ attacking threat and goals tally will multiply. Due to the scintillating form of Suarez last year Sturridge’s contribution went, somewhat, under the radar: not enough has been made of his excellent goals record for the club (after 50 games for the club, only George Allan can beat Sturridge’s tally of 36 goals in Liverpool’s history).

Now without Suarez, expect Sturridge to cement his position alongside Aguero (and now Costa) as the league’s top striker.

However, Liverpool are currently without their talisman and could foreseeably, given his injury record since joining the club, be without him for other periods during the season. And it is in his absence that Rodgers must find a way to pick up consistent points.

It is fair to say that Rodgers’ efforts so far have not been successful: in three games with Sturridge Liverpool have picked up six points compared to only eight in the seven games without.

During this period in Sturridge’s absence Rodgers has (with the exception of West Ham away) favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation with Mario Balotelli being preferred as the lone man up top (with the exception of West Brom at home where Rickie Lambert was the lone striker).

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 25, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli looks dejected as his side draw 0-0 with Hull City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

What has been clear from these games is that Balotelli is not a lone striker. This is hardly a major revelation – the best games of his career have both been when playing with a strike partner (Aguero when scoring two against Manchester United at Old Trafford during City’s 6-1 win and Cassano when scoring the two goals that knocked Germany out of the Euro 2012 semi finals) and he revealed as much in a recent interview.

What Mario needs is a partner to link up with and provide the intelligent movement (that he lacks) to create space for himself: it is no coincidence that his two goals for the club have so far been scored when partnered by Fabio Borini.

Formation

From this is drawn the conclusion that Rodgers should revert back to last season’s formation of the 4-1-2-1-2 midfield diamond. Yes it was not successful against West Ham but it is hard to argue for that game being a valid reason to discredit the formation’s benefits: the team were two goals down within seven minutes due to schoolboy defensive errors that could have happened under any system (one a set piece) and were, consequentially, up against it for the rest of the game.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 20, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard looks dejected as West Ham United score the third goal during the Premier League match at Upton Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The 4-1-2-1-2 would not only help Balotelli but should see improvements in the performances of numerous individuals.

Raheem Sterling’s best performances for the club have arguably come in the central position behind the strikers. That is not to say he is incapable of playing out wide, he is excellent too in that position, but recently he has found himself isolated out wide, in a central position he should be able to find himself more pockets of space in which to pick up the ball and run at opposition defences.

Coutinho also should benefit: playing as one of the two midfielders he will see the number of players providing movement in front of him increasing providing him with more opportunities to play his killer passes. Gerrard could, similarly, benefit from the increased movement with his passing range whilst Henderson with his box to box pressing may as well have been born for this system.

It is arguable that this system will make Liverpool more vulnerable at the back, especially in wide areas but this may be a risk worth taking. All systems have their pros and cons and Liverpool’s defence is not perfect as things stand.

Whilst it should be expected that the defence will improve as the season progresses and they have chance to gel (in Manquillo, Lovren and Moreno three new regulars have been introduced) for the time being the best option looks to be compensating for the defence’s weakness by looking to score more goals than the opposition, a formula that Rodgers’ found great success with last season.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 31, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the second goal against Tottenham Hotspur from the penalty spot with team-mates Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli during the Premier League match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

And finally on the point of Sturridge’s return: yes he is capable of being the lone front man in a 4-3-3 but he also fits perfectly into the 4-1-2-1-2. Liverpool’s best performance of the season came with Sturridge playing in a 4-1-2-1-2 away at Tottenham Hotspur (a game which also provided hope that himself and Balotelli could strike up a good partnership) and statistics have shown that, even with Sturridge on the pitch, Liverpool average more goals per minute with two up top.

The other option would be to play 3-5-2, a formation that could help provide defensive solidity against top clubs but after the exploits under it last season the midfield diamond looks for the most part to be the best option.

Despite the underwhelming start to the season there is plenty of time for Rodgers to turn things around. Last season he proved just how adept he was at dealing with problems building a formation in which his players thrived, he now faces the same challenge this season and a previous solution could just be the answer he requires to kickstart The Reds’ season.

Building A New Liverpool: How Brendan Rodgers Can Halt The Reds’ Slide

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has urged his team-mates to use their disappointment at Newcastle as extra motivation for a daunting double.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Monday, August 25, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson looks dejected as Manchester City score the third goal during the Premier League match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by Chris Brunskill/Propaganda)

The Merseysiders lost 1-0 at St James' Park on Saturday as their lack of cutting edge without the departed Luis Suarez and the injured Daniel Sturridge was exposed once again.

However, they have little time to lick their wounds with a Champions League trip to Real Madrid looming on Tuesday evening ahead of Saturday's visit of Barclays Premier League leaders Chelsea to Anfield.

Henderson told the club's official website, "They are two big games, two games to show that we can score goals and defend better.

"We'll look forward to that still. We'll work hard during the week and put in two good performances, hopefully, against two top teams."

That, however, may be easier said than done with manager Brendan Rodgers admitting as he started to analyse an unproductive day on Tyneside that "80 per cent" of last season's goals had been taken out of his team with the absence of SAS double-act Suarez and Sturridge.

Liverpool enjoyed plenty of possession at St James', particularly as midfield general Steven Gerrard worked his way gradually higher up the pitch as the game wore on.

However, with Mario Balotelli static and Raheem Sterling, who spent most of his afternoon wide on the right, largely becalmed by full-back Paul Dummett, home goalkeeper Tim Krul had little of note to do.

Newcastle always looked the more dangerous through the pace of Gabriel Obertan, until he tore a thigh muscle 23 minutes into the game, and then substitute Rolando Aarons, Sammy Ameobi and the marauding Moussa Sissoko.

But it took them until the 73rd minute to find what proved to be the winner when substitute Ayoze Perez capitalised on Alberto Moreno's hesitation on the edge of his own six-yard box to hammer the ball past helpless keeper Simon Mignolet.

The Belgium international then pulled off a superb save with his foot to deny Remy Cabella a second, but his efforts were to count for nothing in the end.

Henderson said: "It was very disappointing. We came here for confidence and to get a result and we didn't manage to do that, so we're very disappointed.

"Throughout the game, I thought we dominated the ball but we didn't really get in behind them or create many chances.

"We had one or two through Philippe Coutinho and Martin Skrtel from the corner, but overall, we're disappointed not to get something out of the game.

"I felt as though we started the game well and we quietened the crowd down, kept the ball. But the ball wasn't the problem – we were dominating the game through possession, but it was just getting into that final third and creating an opening.

"We struggled with that, so we'll have to improve on that and kick on for the next game."

That next game – Real at the Bernabeu Stadium – could hardly be any more difficult with the Spaniards having won 3-0 on Merseyside at a canter On October 22, and clear-cut chances are likely to be even more difficult to come by.

However, Henderson insists that is a collective responsibility despite the growing pressure on summer signing Balotelli.

He said: "It's down to the whole team, especially the midfielders and the attackers, to make runs in behind and create lots of options and movement and combination play as well.

"I just thought we didn't do as well as we know we can, so we'll have to improve."

Jordan Henderson keen to move on from Liverpool loss at Newcastle

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has urged his team-mates to use their disappointment at Newcastle as extra motivation for a daunting double.
