Liverpool’s next Europa League challenge comes in the form of Turkish giants Besiktas, and here Jack Lusby provides an overview.

Liverpool welcome Besiktas to Anfield on Thursday night, over seven years after their last encounter with the Turkish side — an 8-0 home win that remains a record for the Champions League.

This clash, and the reverse fixture at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium the following week, is Liverpool’s first foray into the Europa League this season, with an aggregate victory taking them on to the last 16 draw.

With a coveted Champions League spot awaiting the winners of the tournament, Liverpool need to take this tie seriously and ensure victory.

But what can Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool expect from Besiktas?

Formations and Playing Style

Since joining from Lokomotiv Moscow in 2013, former West Ham United and Everton midfielder turned Croatia manager Slavan Bilic has stamped his staunch playing style on Besiktas, and seen moderate success.

Last season, the Black Eagles finished third in the Super Lig, behind Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

Bilic and his side should be well prepared, as he recently discussed how Besiktas often sit down to watch the Premier League: “If we have dinner, and there are big screens to watch, and there is no Turkish game, then we watch Premier League.”

This showed as Besiktas took Arsenal to the wire in their Champions League play-off clashes in August—Arsene Wenger’s side won 1-0 on aggregate.

After a 2013 victory over Gaziantepspor, Bilic outlined his side’s belief: “The team’s philosophy is ‘power to the people.’ There are no rich or poor here. No classes. That’s why I can say that I am endeavoring for a socialist team.”

This has translated to a hard-working, collective style.

Besiktas typically line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with defensive midfielders Veli Kavlak and Atiba Hutchinson providing a solid base for Gokhan Tore, Jose Sosa and Olcay Sahan to support lone striker Demba Ba.

In other games more recently, however, Bilic has also utilised a 4-1-4-1 formation, showing his versatility—a difficult eventuality for Liverpool to plan for.

Bilic employs a possession-based attacking style, focussed primarily in the wide areas and with an emphasis on defending from the front.

Key Men

Glancing over Besiktas’ regular features this season, one name stands out: Ba.

After terrorising Liverpool with a notorious strike last season, the 29-year-old move on to the Super Lig in a £4.7 million deal, clearly considered surplus to requirements by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

In Turkey, Ba has continued the fine run of goalscoring form that he has sustained throughout his career, and particularly during his time in the Premier League.

Ba has scored 16 goals in 20 appearances so far this season, including five goals in four Europa League games, and will likely lead the line against the Reds.

Typically operating behind Ba in the No. 10 role, Sosa has been Besiktas’ chief playmaker this season, laying on five assists in 14 Super Lig games this season, as well as scoring three goals.

Joining Besiktas along with Ba in the summer, Sosa previously lined out for La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, and brings with him a typically robust style of play that saw him slot in nicely in a substitutes’ role under demanding Atletico manager Diego Simeone.

Along with a canny set-piece ability and an inspired creativity, a determined defensive contribution serves as one of Sosa’s main attributes, and the 29-year-old will put pressure on Liverpool’s defence.

At the other end of the field Serdar Kurtulus stands as Besiktas’ best defender, and the Turkish side’s best chance of curtailing Liverpool’s attacking might.

A primarily defensive right-back, Kurtulus joined Besiktas from Bursaspor in 2006, before leaving for Gaziantepspor three years later, and returning in 2013.

The 27-year-old has rejoined Besiktas as an accomplished defender, with an average of 3.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game as well as great strength in the air—Kurtulus rarely forays forward, with his playing style most reminiscent of Javier Manquillo of the Liverpool squad.

Surprise Package

Besides the aforementioned trio, Rodgers would be wise to pay attention to the likes of former Chelsea winger Tore, versatile attacking midfielder Sahan and strong centre-back Ersan Gulum.

Beyond Bilic’s first team, Liverpool should be wary of former Fulham midfielder Kerim Frei.

The 21-year-old is somewhat of a supersub at Besiktas, with 11 appearances from the bench in the Super Lig complementing just four starts—Frei has scored three goals so far this season.

Pace, skill and a direct attacking style earned Frei, like many others before him, comparisons with Lionel Messi when he was at Fulham and his introduction could stretch Liverpool late on.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As mentioned, much of Besiktas’ attacks are focussed down the flanks, and that is where Liverpool will find their main strengths.

Sosa will receive the ball ahead of the Liverpool defence and look to feed the advancing wide-men, likely Tore and Sahan, who will in turn look to supply Ba.

Ba, of course, represents a significant strength in his own right, not only due to his adept finishing ability, but also his hold-up play and intelligent movement—the Senegalese will look to give Rodgers’ defenders a hard time and play off the shoulder.

While Bilic will look to throw much of his strength into this flowing attack, Besiktas are susceptible to damage on the counter attack.

A lot of Arsenal’s attacks in their second-leg Champions League play-off victory earlier this season shows that:

Furthermore, as Alexis Sanchez’s winner proves, Besiktas can also be broken down by patient attacking play, with decoy runs and intuitive movement dragging their defenders out of position.

These lapses in concentration and the dissolve of structure could be the downfall of Besiktas, and a resolute Liverpool side should look to exploit that.

Lazar Markovic has been handed a four-game ban from European football, Press Association Sport understands.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic is shown a red card and sent off against FC Basel during the final UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Liverpool winger was sent off in the Reds' final Champions League group game against Basle in December for catching Behrang Safari in the face with a flick of his hand.

Markovic has been given an extra game on top of the normal three-match ban for violent conduct because he was sent off playing for Benfica in a Europa League match last May.

Markovic had already been substituted in the Europa League semi-final against Juventus but was sent off by Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg for his part in a touchline fracas.

The red card meant the 20-year-old missed the final against Sevilla, which the Spanish side won on penalties.

Liverpool opted not to appeal UEFA's decision and Markovic will miss both legs of the last-32 Europa League clash against Besiktas, the first of which is at Anfield on Thursday, as well as the home and away last-16 matches should the Reds progress.

Markovic's dismissal against Basle was one element of a thoroughly disappointing night for the club, with a 1-1 draw not enough to see them progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Manager Brendan Rodgers was unhappy with the red card, saying after the match: "I thought the sending off was a really disappointing decision by the referee.

"Lazar Markovic gets sent off for that – his fingernail barely touches the nose of the defender and the defender is the guy who should be looked at for his reaction."

Markovic responded to the ban on Twitter with the simple message "4?" accompanied by a picture of himself looking unhappy.

Lazar Markovic was controversially dismissed against Basel in December

Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic has been suspended for their next four European matches following his Champions League sending-off against Basel in December.

Players normally receive three-match bans for violent conduct but Markovic has been handed an extra game because he was sent off when playing for Benfica in last season's semi-final.

Having been substituted during the second leg against Juventus, Markovic became embroiled in a touch-line altercation and was red carded by referee Mark Clattenburg.

It was already clear the £20m summer signing would be unavailable for both legs of Liverpool's Europa League last-32 clash with Besiktas, which starts on Thursday, but he will now have to miss the whole of any potential last-16 encounter as well.

Markovic was very controversially sent off during the 1-1 draw against Basel at Anfield, just 15 minutes after coming off the bench.

As he ran forward with the ball, he pushed his hand into the face of the pursuing Behrang Safari, who tumbled to the ground in a somewhat theatrical manner.

Markovic has reacted to news of his ban on Twitter, posting a picture of himself after he was sent off with the message "4?"

JOHNSON TO LEAVE THE ANFIELD

*** kali ni sedih betul betul bukan macam yg tadi..

TEAMtalk's Top Men: (4-1-3-2): Mignolet, Dawson, McArdle, Lescott, Gibbs, Henderson, Clarke, Ozil, King, Ideye, Stead

Simon Mignolet (Liverpool): After a cacophony of flaps and fumbles cast doubt on his Anfield career, Belgian shot-stopper Mignolet maintained his admirable resurgence against Crystal Palace on Saturday evening. Despite early miscommunication, contributing to Fraser Campbell's smash'n'grab opener, the former Sunderland glovesman responded in imperious fashion, dealing exceptionally with Palace's cross-centric ploy. With his confidence restored, Mignolet could finally quash the incessant rumours surrounding his future.

Craig Dawson (West Brom): Tony Pulis' tactical prudence is weaving wonders at the Hawthorns, with versatile defender Dawson a major, if unexpected, beneficiary. Forced into an unfamiliar right-back role, he defied any premature "square peg, round hole" claims by producing a performance of supreme distinction as the Baggies trounced West Ham. While offering a reliable physical presence, his assist for Brown Ideye's early strike was full-back play transcribed verbatim from textbook.

Rory McArdle (Bradford): The imperious Bantam's blocker raised his game immeasurably on Sunday, inspiring the League One underdogs to a rather foreseeable cup upset against Sunderland. A major protagonist in Bradford's incredible sprint to the 2012 League Cup final, McArdle's assured defensive display once again propelled his side towards the national stadium. Steven Fletcher, Danny Graham and Connor Wickham, who's combined transfer fees tot up to around £30m, all tried and failed to bypass the towering centre-half.

Jolean Lescott (West Brom): The former England international cast off the shackles of his Man City detention last summer, joining the Baggies as a free man on the road to redemption. Thankfully, his prolonged period in the football wilderness has barely affected Lescott's undoubted, if forgotten, quality. Displaying excellent organisation and positional awareness, the 26 time international marshalled West Brom's impenetrable backline against the rather blunt Hammers.

Kieron Gibbs (Arsenal): While Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil served up a feast of delicious dexterity, Arsenal's roving left-back soared understandably below the radar. However, his performance was no less dazzling. Against a shell-shocked Middlesbrough, Gibbs' tireless overlaps and perfectly placed crosses bamboozled the visitors' static defence, laying on the opener for Olivier Giroud with a typically pinpoint delivery. His enforced exile from national recognition remains a source of underlying confusion.

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool): The Reds' captain-in-waiting assumed the armband with pride, offering a mouth-watering taster of Liverpool's future in the absence of outgoing talisman Steven Gerrard. In the bubbling cauldron of Selhurst Park, Henderson's impeccably refined forward bursts and instinctive tactical awareness inspired Liverpool's triumph in a full-blooded midfield battle, providing the platform for a hard-fought yet ultimately deserved win. On this evidence, Liverpool's future is in capable hands indeed.

Billy Clarke (Bradford): Even upon the rhythm restricting turf of Valley Parade, dexterous forward Clarke showcased his enviable technical nous, outperforming his top-tier counterparts with consummate comfort. His impressive link-up play and incisive passing exposed Sunderland's ragged backline as Bradford added yet another Premier League name to their ever burgeoning collection of scalps. His admirable efforts to claim the opener, via a huge deflection of countryman John O'Shea, typify Bradford's underdog spirit.

Mesut Ozil (Arsenal): At £42.5m, it's fair to say much was expected of Germany's principal playmaker when he swapped the brilliant white of Real Madrid for Arsene Wenger's trophy-hunting Gunners. And, after a rather underwhelming first 18 months in north London, Ozil is starting to augment his undoubted eminence with vital consistency. The languid schemer's magnificent display against Middlesbrough maintained his remarkable recent form; his weighted passes and delicate balance offering a further reminder of his astounding skill-set.

Joshua King (Blackburn): Arguably the finest performer of round five, the Norwegian international eradicated Stoke with a clinical hat-trick at Ewood Park. A flicked header preceded two uber-composed one-on-ones shattered the Potters as Gary Bowyer's unfancied charges took one huge stride towards Wembley. While his formative years at Manchester United only yielded a mere handful of first-team opportunities, King exceptional display finally propelled him into nationwide prominence. Who says the magic of the cup is dead?

Brown Ideye (West Brom): The universe has three constants; life, death, and the fact that football will always, always make us look like jabbering fools. Justifiably vilified after netting only twice in his first 17 games in English football, Brown Ideye's annus mirabilis continued on Saturday as he destroyed West Ham's makeshift backline with a performance of pure poachery. With trademark centre-forward intellect, the Nigerian's third and fourth goals of the calendar year offer a stark reminder of the beautiful game's undying unpredictability.

Jon Stead (Bradford): After netting in each round of the cup thus far, it was something of an inevitability that Bradford's strapping targetman would find the net against his former employers on Sunday. Stead, duly, rendered stattos smug and fans delirious as his low drive evaded Sunderland's clanger-happy 'keeper Vito Mannone. His trademark hold-up play and reliable aerial threat, straight out of the League One manual, proved too much for the beleaguered big-boys.

Reports on Tuesday suggest Glen Johnson’s contract talks at Anfield are faltering, amid speculation over the full-back’s future.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's Glen Johnson during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)Glen Johnson during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Before you get too carried away, it’s worth stressing that this rumour appears to be extremely tenuous.

The Mirror reports that Johnson is stalling on a new deal, and with his current contract set to expire this summer, there is a growing belief that the 30-year-old will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The hugely untrustworthy Winner Sports and Metro claim that the Reds already have Johnson’s potential replacements lined up, with Porto star Danilo and former Liverpool star Alvaro Arbeloa on their radar. The former would likely cost up to £28million, while the latter could leave Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Whether there is any truth in all of this seems very debatable, but there can be no denying that many Liverpool fans wouldn’t exactly be heartbroken to see Johnson leave.

The Englishman has been a good servant to the club at times since signing from Portsmouth in the summer of 2009, but his performances have been lacking in the last few years.

With Jon Flanagan and Javier Manquillo solid young options in Johnson’s position, and Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe thriving at wing-back this season, the former Chelsea man would not be missed too much.

Would you be sad to see Glen Johnson leave Liverpool? Let us know in the comments below.

Reports on Monday evening claim Liverpool’s interest in Roma star Miralem Pjanic remains strong, despite the hefty fee required to bring him to Merseyside.

BOSTON, MA - Wednesday, July 25, 2012: AS Roma's Miralem Pjanic in action against Liverpool during a pre-season friendly match at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, the second match of the Reds' North American tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Mirror claims that Pjanic would cost the Reds £37million and £160,000 a week, as they look for a successor to Steven Gerrard in midfield.

It is believed that Brendan Rodgers‘ much-publicised trip to Rome last week was to meet Roma director of football Walter Sabatini, in order to discuss a deal for the Giallorossi‘s prized asset.

Pjanic is thought to be Rodgers’ first-choice replacement for the departing Gerrard, and it would be a major coup if the club managed to acquire his signature.

The 24-year-old Bosnia international is one of the most talented midfielders in Europe at the moment, combining creativity and class with an admirable work-ethic. He joined Roma from Lyon in 2011, and has become a hugely important player for the Serie A giants in the years since.

Liverpool are also reportedly interested in bringing fellow Roma stars Radja Nainggolan and Adam Ljajic to Anfield, but the level of interest in the talented duo remains far less than that of Pjanic.

Who do you see as the perfect Steven Gerrard replacement? Let us know in the comments below.

Nampak gaya Liverpool bakal kehilangan khidmat Lazar Markovic akibat layangan kad merah pada aksi menentang FC Basel ketika perlawanan piala Eropah tempoh hari.

It’s a little over two months since Simon Mignolet was dropped for an “indefinite period” by Brendan Rodgers. Josh Sexton looks at how his recovery has been key for Liverpool.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 20, 2015: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in action against Chelsea during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

December 2014; goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is told by manager Brendan Rodgers that he will be dropped indefinitely and replaced by back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones.

At the time Mignolet’s confidence was through the floor, criticised by many for his poor distribution, lack of command of his area and several high profile mistakes, including his fumble against Ludogorets a month earlier.

Towards the back end of last year, as Liverpool’s title charge began to falter, fans and pundits alike were trying to pick out the different reasons to explain why Liverpool hadn’t won the title, with some attributing the failure to Mignolet’s errors.

Despite starting off the campaign in the best possible fashion, with a penalty save against Stoke on his debut for the Reds, that was about as good as it got for Mignolet, as Liverpool consistently struggled to defend, in particular defending set pieces, which is mainly due to Mignolet’s lack of aerial ability.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Boxing Day Thursday, December 26, 2013: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet looks dejected as Manchester City score the second goal to make the score 2-1 during the Premiership match at the City of Manchester Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Mignolet didn’t command his area and didn’t distribute the ball in a way that allowed Liverpool to counter attack with requisite intensity – as previous goalkeeper Pepe Reina had mastered during his time at the club.

Instead the onus was on the midfielders in the team to break up the play and start the counter attacks as, in Mignolet’s defence, none of the defenders had particularly covered themselves in glory over the course of the season.

The £9 million signing from Sunderland was under a lot of scrutiny heading into his second season at the club.

It’s only natural for supporters to compare him to his predecessor and Liverpool’s former first choice goalkeeper. Reina was loved by Liverpool fans with over 200 league appearances, over half of which he kept clean sheets, and a three-time winner of the Golden Glove award in the Premier League.

Reina’s distribution was like no other, he had the ability to start counter attacks in the blink of an eye with his range of kicking and his throwing ability, but not only that he was a leader, and he commanded.

CHARLOTTE, USA - Friday, August 1, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Jose Reina during a training session at the Bank of America Stadium on day twelve of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

As his replacement Mignolet hasn’t offered much of this, his distribution has been problematic, and he has often held the ball too long when a counter attacking opportunity has presented itself.

He’s lacked confidence and hasn’t commanded his area or his defence, and he has often missed the ball when he has came out to claim it from set pieces, thus many people have questioned Liverpool’s choice of replacement.

However, fast-forward to February 2015, Mignolet has since been reinstated to the team, due to Jones’ injury initially on Boxing Day, and his confidence has majorly improved – which he attributes to a talk with his fiancée.

Since the turn of the year, Mignolet has kept four clean sheets in six games, and has made some big saves in recent times, including a few great saves in the FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet makes a save against Chelsea's Diego Costa during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

His kicking has vastly improved from some of the horror shows from earlier in the season, and he has shown more intent to distribute the ball quickly to start counter attacks for the team.

Although set pieces are still an issue, Mignolet’s decision making has improved allowing him to make better judgements as to whether to come and claim the ball from a crowded penalty area or stay put and trust his defenders to clear it.

However, when he has come to claim the ball he has usually succeeded, looking back to the Palace game again where he made several effective punched clearances from set pieces and crosses into the box.

There is no doubt that Mignolet has been a key part of Liverpool’s turnaround in form going into the second half of the season – ultimately confidence starts at the back, the defence has to be confident that if they are beaten that they can trust their keeper to deal with it, and also to know what he is going to do next.

The trust in the defence and the growth in confidence has been contagious, and Liverpool have become more clinical in the second half of this season, scoring ten league goals in the new year, but more importantly only conceding four goals in the league.

The addition of Emre Can to the back three, and the form of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho, may have a big role to play in this, but ultimately Mignolet’s growth in confidence has played a huge role in the growth in confidence of the whole team and the subsequent upsurge in form.

Simon Mignolet’s turnaround in form key for Liverpool

FA Cup has reached the quarter-final stage

FA Cup has reached the quarter-final stage

Arsenal face a trip to Manchester United in the FA Cup quarter-finals while giant-killers Bradford will be at home to Reading.

The draw for the last eight took place at Deepdale just before Louis van Gaal's men took on Preston in the final game of fifth-round weekend.

United fell behind to Scott Laird's goal early in the second half but goals from Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and a Wayne Rooney penalty secured their progress and an Old Trafford clash with their old rivals from north London.

There is one other all-Premier League tie, which pits new Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood against local rivals West Brom.

Bradford have already beaten Premier League sides Chelsea and Sunderland to reach the quarter-finals and, as their chairman Mark Lawn hoped, they will take on Championship opposition at home in the form of Reading, who were winners over Derby County on Saturday.

Bantams manager Phil Parkinson has plenty of history with Reading as he made more than 400 appearances for the club as a player and was voted into the club's all-time best XI.

Lawn told Sky Sports: "We've got a chance, haven't we. Ninety minutes from Wembley, both sides will realise, and they will both be going for it.

"I think it gives Bradford a great chance. I think we'll sell out here again, hopefully it will be bouncing and we'll push through. That would be great to get these fans back at Wembley again because they deserve it.

"Reading are only one game from Wembley as well and I am sure Phil (Parkinson) will have them prepared right. There's that little bit of extra spice because Phil's a big hero down there."

The first tie out of the hat saw Liverpool given a home draw against Blackburn Rovers, who thrashed Stoke City 4-1 on Saturday thanks to a hat-trick from striker Josh King.

Quarter-final draw:

Liverpool v Blackburn Rovers

Bradford City v Reading

Manchester United v Arsenal

Aston Villa v West Brom

Ties to be played March 7 and 8.
