Liverpool have today confirmed that Philippe Coutinho has signed a new contract at the club, with reports suggesting it extends his deal to 2020.

The Brazilian playmaker has been in excellent form of late, assisting both goals against West Ham at the weekend.

Upon signing the new deal, Coutinho told the official LFC website: “This club is great and the fans have always supported me, so I’ve been eager to sign this new deal since conversations started. Today is a very happy day.”

“I’ve had a great reception since my first day here. As I always say, Liverpool is a big family and I’m a happy person here.”

Liverpool have announced the deal as a new “long-term” one, but reports this morning in the British press claimed the deal will see Coutinho extend his contract to 2020.

Speaking on Monday, Brendan Rodgers said: “You can see he is in a real good moment. He is playing a lot of games and we are trying to manage him but his performances are at a really high level which is great to see because he’s a little magician with the ball.”

Coutinho has made 31 appearances this season, scoring just twice, something Rodgers admits he can improve: “His courage and bravery to get on the ball is fantastic. If he can continue to improve, and there are areas where he can improve like his goalscoring, then he can get into that bracket of being world class.”

Liverpool signed Coutinho from Inter Milan for £8.5 million two years ago last week.

Alex Malone returns to This Is Anfield with an optimistic look at why the future is so bright for Liverpool and their young squad.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 31, 2015: Liverpool's celebrates scoring the first goal against West Ham United during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There was a time last season, when the wonderful SAS (and S) were brutally tearing defences apart, that we all more than just dreamed of the elusive 19th title. But at the same time, we were all nervously looking over our collective shoulders, to see a defence leaking goals more often than Julian Assange.

50 goals conceded (1.3 goals per game) just wasn’t good enough, and it eventually was our undoing. At season’s end, we had conceded two more than Crystal Palace in 11th, and twenty three more than Chelsea in 3rd.

Then, there was a time this season when the whole fabric of last season looked to have well and truly unraveled. The leaky defence wasn’t addressed, and continued at the 1.3 goals per game rate, while the absence of S and S meant the goals disappeared quicker than Fabio Borini after a red card. Dejan Lovren, seemingly due to price tag and out of necessity to plug the holes from last season, started time and time again, and slumped from decent, to poor, to a liability in a matter of weeks. To this point, he hasn’t recovered.

The performances were desperately poor; the cavalier, champagne football of last season was replaced by turgid, aimless, toothless displays. Manager of the year, Brendan Rodgers seemed to be buckling under the pressure, as his normally astute, common-sense decisions disintegrated in to head shaking ones. The Champions League came and went with a whimper. League position was bottom half for a while. Fourth place looked like a pipe dream. The ‘season after we finished 2nd’ hoodoo seemed to be striking its curse once more.

Sometimes managers ask for time as a host of new signings bed-in, but he clearly didn’t foresee or expect this. Reports from the Liverpool Echo and the usually reliable Chris Bascombe talked about Brendan pacing around his bedroom at 4am. This wasn’t a man who had answers; this was a man looking for them. He wasn’t alone – we all were.

Turnaround

But great managers and great clubs see their way out of adversity. It’s in the DNA. When the going gets tough and all that.

So, fast forward since the misery of November and early December, and suddenly, a turnaround I don’t think any of us could have anticipated is in full flow.

Since Dec 17th, we have won 7 games, drawn 4 and had just the single extra time cup defeat. We’ve won 5 league games and drawn the other two. That’s 1 defeat in 12 as well as 17 points out of 21 in the league. It’s also 20 goals scored and 9 against. Essentially, we’ve had 4 clean sheets in the last 6 games (5 out of six if you only count the first 90 minutes, but let’s not split hairs) and in the other 2 games we’ve conceded just 1 goal in each; or, to use the same stat as before, 0.3 goals per game over the last 6 games.

We’re all very aware that the formation change has had a marked effect on the performance of the team, so I’m not about to retread what’s already been written at length elsewhere. What I do want to discuss though, is just how bright the future look – and why we have so much to look forward to.

Let’s begin with the ‘old guard’ (and by that I mean from pre and early Rodgers days) who are for one reason or another, leaving or being phased out of the team. Of course, there is the absolute legend, Mr Steven Gerrard, who will soon be leaving us. But all legends end up moving on, and for everything Steven has done for us, I (sadly) think it’s the right time.

Jose Enrique is a peripheral figure now and needs to consider his future elsewhere. Glen Johnson is playing less and less (yes, I know he’s reportedly been offered a new contract, but that can often mean that you sell and get some actual dosh instead of losing for free.) Even if he stays, his playing time will be massively reduced. Fabio Borini has consistently proven he’s not up to the job and his days are most definitely numbered. Joe Allen too has gone from bright and hopeful to nervous and hopeless. Kolo Toure, was only ever a stop-gap figure and rarely features of late. All of these, alongside the disaster named Balotelli, and the disappointment named Lambert, are likely to be ex-Liverpool players in the coming year.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Tuesday, January 27, 2015: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva in action against Chelsea during the Football League Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg match at Stamford Bridge. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

But it’s not all bad news for the entire old guard – Lucas has finally regained his form after injury, and has been a virtual ever present in the recent good run. Henderson has gained the captain’s armband and his favoured central role, and Skrtel is the beneficiary of the excellent Sakho and Can alongside him. All 3 though, need to continue to impress and improve because it’s the new kids on the block who are giving us genuine excitement of a bright future ahead.

Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling are genuine world-class prospects and their recent partnership and understanding is a genuine footballing joy to behold. Some of the football these two are capable of, both individually and as a partnership is breathtaking. The first goal against West Ham saw Coutinho pick a pass that Lionel Messi would be proud of. Oh, and they’re 22 and 20 years of age!

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 31, 2015: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia in action against West Ham United during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

In addition to these two magicians, we have another youngster – Jordon Ibe – who is threatening to follow in their dancing footsteps. His cameo against West Ham cemented an extremely successful spell at Derby, where he was one of their players of the season, and he’s only 19.

So, with a frontline consisting of 25-year-old Daniel Sturridge, ably aided and abetted by the three aforementioned youngsters, that’s a strike force to strike fear in to any defence in the world for years to come. And they’re gonna get better!

Continuing with the ‘new guard’ we have even more to get excited about. Currently in central defence, we have one of the finds of the season in the quite wonderful Emre Can who turned 21 just over a fortnight ago. This kid is powerful, technically superb, can pick a pass, shoot and has shown his versatility both at the back, and in his natural midfield role. If I have one real hope for the ‘new Gerrard’ it’s Emre that stands out as the natural successor. He’s that good.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

On the flanks, we have not SAS, but M&M; 22-year-old Alberto Moreno and 20-year-old Lazar Markovic. While neither are the finished article, the potential of these kids is there for all to see. With each game they’re gaining confidence, and Brendan is playing his part by playing these lads on form rather than replace them with the more experienced (and less effective) old guard.

Markovic especially, who initially looked very much like a rabbit in the headlight, has added pace, confidence, and importantly, grit and steel to his game since. I’ve particularly enjoyed that cocky look and smile he returns at players trying to intimidate him. It didn’t take him long to figure out the physical side of the premier league and how to fight fire with fire.

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 10, 2015: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic in action against Sunderland during the Premier League match at the Stadium of Light. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

‘Old-timer’, 26-year-old Adam Lallana has been a mixed bag so far and it’s fair to say the jury remains out. No doubt he has silky skills and wonderful technique (he was superb against Swansea), but can he translate all of that in to ongoing effectiveness and consistency? I, for one, believe he can. He was excellent for Southampton, and while that proves nothing (big fish, small pond etc.) he just has too much natural talent to fail – I think! Time will prove me right or wrong, but I’m predicting he’s going to play a key role for us in the next few seasons.

And finally, there’s 22-year-old Jon Flanagan, 22-year-old Joao Carlos-Teixeira, 17-year-old Sheyi Ojo, 22-year-old Luis Alberto, 21-year-old Andre Wisdom and 19-year-old Divock Origi all offering potential future exciting options – and – it’s worth repeating; each and every one of them under 22 years of age.

We still need a few additions, but what team doesn’t? We certainly need goalkeeping reinforcement. We need another centre half. We need another natural goal scorer. But when (not if) we find them, and add them to this incredible pool of young, blossoming, immense talent, the 2013-14 season and the football played, might not be seen as an anomaly for Liverpool Football Club, it might just become the norm.

Liverpool’s bright future: Why the 2013/14 season can become the ‘norm’ at Anfield

Former defender Jason McAteer says Liverpool should have looked to sell Mario Balotelli in the January transfer window, saying he thinks the Italian offers nothing to the way the Reds play.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli applauds the supporters as he is substituted against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

“Balotelli’s not worked,” said McAteer in an exclusive interview with This Is Anfield. “I’d get him out, I don’t think he offers anything to the way Liverpool play. I don’t think he offers anything to the dressing room.

“I don’t think he’s suitable. I think for him, he needs to move. He needs to go somewhere where’s he’s going to be able to play the way he wants to play because he’s finding it difficult to change, to adapt.

“I don’t think he’s the kind of player who can adapt. He is what he is and that’s no criticism of him, that’s the way he plays as a centre-forward; Rickie Lambert plays in a different way.”

Balotelli, of course, joined Liverpool in August last year for £16 million from AC Milan, but hasn’t started a game now since early November.

“I think Brendan thought there was enough quality there to change him, and it hasn’t worked,” says McAteer.

You can watch the full interview with McAteer below, discussing the problems with the January window, interest in Danny Ings, the improved form of the side, the role of the wing-back and plenty more current Liverpool FC discussion.

“Balotelli’s not worked” – Former Liverpool player says Reds should have sold Mario Balotelli

Former defender Jason McAteer says Liverpool should have looked to sell Mario Balotelli in the January transfer window, saying he thinks the Italian offers nothing to the way the Reds play.

Steven Gerrard‘s next appearance for Liverpool will be his 700th for the club; we look back at his previous milestone appearances and how each game panned out.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, January 5, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard in action against Oldham Athletic during the FA Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Reds’ legendary captain will reach yet another landmark moment in his unrivalled career when he next walks out for Liverpool, probably against Bolton in the FA Cup replay on Wednesday night.

It’s an amazing achievement by the 34-year-old, and he will join Ian Callaghan and Jamie Carragher as just the third player in Liverpool’s history to play 700 times for the club.

Here are how Gerrard’s other milestone appearances for the Reds panned out.

100th- Liverpool 1-1 Boavista- 11th September 2001

Scorers: Owen (29); Silva (3)

LFC starting XI: Dudek, Carragher, Henchoz, Hyypia, Vignal, Hamann, McAllister, Gerrard, Murphy, Heskey, Owen.

This Champions League group stage clash back in 2001/02- coincidentally on the same day as the 9/11 terrorist attacks in America- was Liverpool’s first ever game in the competition since it changed from the European Cup in 1992, barring the qualifying round win over FC Haka.

Michael Owen levelled matters for Gerard Houllier’s side, following a shock early opener by Boavista striker Elpidio Silva, and they had to settle for a slightly disappointing point in the end.

Gerrard was starting to establish himself as one of Liverpool’s star men, despite still being just 21 at the time, and he had produced a virtuoso display for England 10 days earlier in their 5-1 mauling of Germany. There was much more to come from him though.

200th- Charlton Athletic 3-2 Liverpool- 28th September 2003

Scorers: Smicer (15), Owen pen (52); Lisbie (31,43,83)

LFC starting XI: Dudek, Finnan, Hyypia, Biscan, Riise, Diouf, Gerrard, Smicer, Kewell, Heskey, Owen.

What promised to be a memorable afternoon for Gerrard at the Valley back in the 2003/04 season turned into a nightmare, as Houllier’s men succumbed to a late defeat.

‘Captain Fantastic’ was just a few weeks away from being named Liverpool’s new skipper, and he was beginning to emerge as one of the finest young midfielders in Europe.

His influence on the side was growing by the week, and 2003/04 saw him drag the Reds through many games single-handedly.

Despite leading through Vladimir Smicer, Kevin Lisbie’s double turned the game on its head before half-time. Although Owen equalised from the penalty spot, Lisbie completed his hat-trick from range after 83 minutes.

300th- Aston Villa 0-2 Liverpool- 5th November 2005

Scorers: Gerrard pen (84), Alonso (89)

LFC starting XI: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Sissoko, Alonso, Gerrard, Garcia, Morientes, Cisse.

Gerrard’s 300th appearance in a Liverpool shirt proved to be a memorable one for the lifelong Reds fanatic, as Rafa Benitez‘s produced a late flourish to earn all three points at Villa Park.

By this point in his career, Gerrard was widely regarded as one of the best players in world football, and arguably the finest central midfielder on the planet. He was a European champion, and although still just 25, was already an Anfield icon.

The skipper calmly dispatched a penalty with just six minutes remaining to send the away fans into raptures, and Xabi Alonso put the icing on the cake with a clinical last-minute finish.

400th- Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal- 28th October 2007

Scorers: Gerrard (7); Fabregas (80)

LFC starting XI: Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Kuyt, Voronin, Torres.

As has been the case so often throughout Gerrard’s magical career, he stepped up to the plate on another milestone occasion back in 2007.

His blistering strike after just seven minutes sent Anfield wild, in what was a typically close encounter against a talented Arsenal side. Cesc Fabregas equalised late on, however, as the Reds had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Fabregas summed up the Englishman’s brilliance at the time in a pre-match interview:

“I would love to have Gerrard in my team. He is the player who four or five years ago when I was in my house I was looking up to him.

“And now I have the chance to play against him, which is fantastic for me to keep learning, because he is one of the best midfielders in the world.”

500th- Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Liverpool- 5th December 2009

LFC starting XI: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Insua, Lucas, Mascherano, Gerrard, Benayoun, Reira, Kuyt.

It’s fair to say that Gerrard’s 500th Liverpool appearance was far from the most memorable, as Benitez’s men struggled to break down a stubborn Blackburn side.

Gerrard, the reigning Footballer of the Year at the time, was still the Reds’ standout player on the day though, outlining his enormous influence at that stage in his career. There is an argument to say that 2009 was his absolute prime.

The skipper had chances to win the game, as did David N’Gog late on, but it wasn’t meant to be. After such a brilliant 2008/09 campaign, Liverpool finished seventh this time around, and Benitez’s time at Anfield came to an end.

600th- Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle- 4th November 2012

Scorers: Suarez (67); Cabaye (43)

LFC starting XI: Jones, Wisdom, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Sahin, Allen, Gerrard, Suso, Sterling, Suarez.

By this point Brendan Rodgers had taken over as Liverpool manager, bringing a new style of football to the club. Despite his slight decline from his absolute peak, Gerrard remained a key man for the Reds.

Yohan Cabaye produced a brilliant strike to give Newcastle a half-time lead, but a moment of individual genius by Luis Suarez levelled matters midway through the second-half.

His sensational chest control and finish from Jose Enrique’s pass was undisputedly one of the goals of the 2012/13 season.

What are you predicting from Gerrard on his 700th Liverpool appearance on Wednesday? Let us know in the comments section below.

Liverpool return to FA Cup action as they travel to the Macron Stadium on Wednesday night looking to progress to the fifth round where a tie against Crystal Palace awaits. Ben Twelves takes a look at the numerous options available to Brendan Rodgers.

After a one match break from cup competition football in Saturday’s 2-0 league success over West Ham, Brendan Rodgers’ Reds quickly turn their attentions back to another tricky cup tie against Neil Lennon’s rejuvenated Bolton.

Nothing separated the two in-form sides in a flat fixture at Anfield which ended in a goalless draw, but with a winner and loser set to be decided in the replay, Rodgers’ side will be looking to continue their upturn in performances and results to move into round five of the competition with as little fuss as possible against the Championship team.

Liverpool responded perfectly on Saturday to their League Cup semi-final exit as the Reds recorded three straight league wins for the first time this season, and Rodgers’ squad will need to translate their impressive league form to the FA Cup in order to arrive in the next round where a trip to Selhurst Park beckons.

The fixture which should have been avoided has come at a cost for the Reds though, with the second Merseyside derby of the season at Goodison Park next up, and with only a small amount of time between the games Rodgers has a tricky selection dilemma on his hands for the cup clash.

The Team

The Liverpool squad edges closer to full strength with Brad Jones and Jon Flanagan the only remaining absentees, and the depth of the squad should allow Rodgers to make a number of changes to his starting team, but that is unlikely to include playing Daniel Sturridge from the beginning against his former club as his comeback continues to be carefully managed.

Options are aplenty for the Northern Irishman, and though a strong team will need to be fielded in order to get the job done against Lennon’s men, rotation where possible should be forthcoming with Liverpool set to play the first of six fixtures in a short but hectic month.

A number of players could benefit from a night off with Lucas Leiva being a priority having played 120 minutes in the second leg at Stamford Bridge and 90 minutes at the weekend, and the consistent back three could all benefit from a break as could Philippe Coutinho, and Raheem Sterling could be benched in preparation for the weekend.

KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES, ENGLAND - Monday, January 5, 2015: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard in action against AFC Wimbledon during the FA Cup 3rd Round match at the Kingsmeadow Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Replacements are readily available for Rodgers, with Steven Gerrard free to feature after being afforded an afternoon off at the weekend, and Glen Johnson, Dejan Lovren, Jose Enrique, Javi Manquillo, Joe Allen, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini will all be hopeful of receiving some match minutes, though Jordon Ibe is frustratingly cup-tied having featured for loan club Derby in round three.

The Line Up

Rodgers’ words in his pre-match press conference were that he would “pick a team to win” but having also acknowledged “when you have so many games you have to plan forward” at the same time, changes to the starting XI seem certain though how many alterations that entails is up for debate.

Four changes were made to the XI for the 0-0 draw at Anfield, but the Liverpool boss could choose to make more this time with his team having come off the back of two hours of football against Chelsea and having made only one change in the victory over Sam Allardyce’s side.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's Emre Can in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

First choice players such as Lucas and Emre Can – who has been on the receiving end of some rough treatment in recent games – should be rested, as should Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic with the pair continuing to impress in physically demanding wing-back roles, and Coutinho and Sterling’s importance means they should be preserved ahead of Saturday’s derby.

Resting those key players and introducing six faces could see Liverpool look like this:

Bolton changed XI

However, Rodgers may opt to make the same number of switches as the first game – should he choose not name an unchanged XI – in order to keep momentum in the side but still affording a night off for the most needed, and with that being a more likely option, I expect a stronger Liverpool to look like this come kick-off on Wednesday night:

Bolton strong XI

FA Cup glory is in Liverpool’s sights with some of the Premier League’s big boys having already been eliminated in the fourth round, and though Rodgers’ men will have to guard against complacency in a testing match, Wednesday night presents an ideal chance for the Reds to take another step towards reaching Wembley.

Liverpool lineup options vs Bolton: Rodgers to keep strong side to ensure progress?

Kedudukan Liverpool tahun 2015.

YNWA

IFAB nak pinda peraturan bolasepak
