Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers expects some of his fringe players to leave before the end of the transfer window, having told everyone in his squad where they stand this season.

rodgers-pre-afcb-presser

Despite a good opening win at Stoke, much of this week has seen some of those who were not involved in the game air their frustrations in the media, with left-backs Alberto Moreno and Jose Enrique both giving interviews to the Spanish press.

Enrique, who claimed he, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli had been “alienated” by Rodgers having been made to train separately from the main squad, seems one of the likely exits.

The future of midfielder Lucas Leiva is also in doubt as he was left out of the squad at the Britannia Stadium with reports claiming he had fallen out with the manager.

Of that quartet, the Brazil international will be the easiest to offload – Enrique, Balotelli and, to a lesser extent, Borini are reluctant to give up their significant wages – with a number of Italian clubs interested, and, while Rodgers was not definitive on names, he accepts some will want out if they view their chances as limited for this campaign.

“It is natural at this stage of the season there will be moves for sure for some players,” he said.

“What is clear is that every player is understanding of exactly where he stands in the squad.

“The spirit is strong but of course it is a difficult situation with the transfer market still being open until the end of the month.

“There is always going to be that speculation but I am sure there will be movement of some of the players that obviously want to play.”

Rodgers, who has done his business early with seven signings brought in before the Barclays Premier League kicked off, is not a fan of the transfer window extending into the season because of the unsettling nature it can have on players.

“There is obviously a sport issue but there is also a moral issue once the season starts – players are unsure where they stand and it is a very difficult time for them,” the Northern Irishman added.

“You see everything settle within the squad once the window is shut because people can then focus on their professional life and life with their families as well.”

However, while he is happy to let some players go Rodgers insists the likes of Moreno and Lazar Markovic, brought in last summer for £12million and £20million respectively, still have a part to play this campaign.

“Both players are very talented players,” he said. “Maybe for the first time in their footballing careers – especially as they are so young – they are finding themselves not being a regular.

“They know very well, with the conversations we have had, it is a long, tough season and they will be needed and when the opportunity comes you take that and keep yourself in the team.

“There is no player here that hasn’t been told that.”

Despite falling behind Dejan Lovren in the centre-back pecking order, Mamadou Sakho will not leave Liverpool this summer, reports claim.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Monday, December 29, 2014: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho in action against Swansea City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Liverpool have rejected a loan bid from Serie A side AS Roma for centre-back Mamadou Sakho.

That is according to Kristian Walsh of the Liverpool Echo, who claims the offer was rebuffed “without hesitation.”

“Sakho is not among the players Liverpool are actively looking to move on before the transfer window closes,” Walsh writes.

“The former PSG man was not a part of the squad on the opening weekend of the season against Stoke, although the centre back missed three days of training in the run up to the game after the birth of his daughter, Sienna.

“The ECHO understands the offer was with a view to the permanent transfer, but it was rejected flatly and without hesitation.”

While Sakho has seemingly fallen into second-choice for Brendan Rodgers‘ left-sided centre-back, behind Croatian Dejan Lovren, that Liverpool flatly refused Roma’s offer is encouraging.

However, on the subject of Sakho’s departure Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph elaborated:

“Sakho is not a player Liverpool are actively trying to sell – unlike several other members of the squad – and the shortage of centre-half options would mean only a huge bid and the possibility of recruiting a swift replacement would prompt a change before now and the end of the window.”

Though Lovren’s performance in the Reds’ season opener away to Stoke City was impressive, the jury is still out on the 26-year-old.

“I don’t think either of them have covered themselves in glory since they’ve come here and I’m looking for a lot more this season from both players,” former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher said this week.

Carragher’s appraisal of Lovren and Sakho throws down the gauntlet for the pair in 2015/16.

With Liverpool competing on four fronts this season, and Lovren a decidedly suspect option partnering Martin Skrtel, Rodgers will need to hold on to Sakho this summer.

After a marked change in tactics for 2015/16 in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Stoke City, Brendan Rodgers lauded his new-look side’s “unpredictability.”

If Liverpool are to achieve success in 2015/16, this will be due to their “unpredictability,” believes manager Brendan Rodgers.

Following their opening 1-0 victory over Stoke City, Liverpool take on newly promoted AFC Bournemouth at Anfield on Monday night.

Rodgers spoke to reporters ahead of the clash.

Asked as to whether the more direct style of play showcased at the Britannia Stadium was an indication of a change of tactics, Rodgers remained conservative on his approach.

“I said last time there is an unpredictability to our game,” he said.

“I have a way of working that won’t change, but I’m not dogmatic in my approach.

“I’m very much about finding ways to win – if a team presses you high you can go over the top of that press or go around that press.

“The players we’ve brought in over the summer have given us that variety.

“If you want to go over the top you may not have the profile of player who can do that, [but] we’ve had a good summer as we have brought in players who can make that work.”

Liverpool’s win over Stoke saw a host of new signings make their Liverpool debuts.

Nathaniel Clyne, Joe Gomez, James Milner and Christian Benteke all appeared from the start, while £29 million signing Roberto Firmino was brought on in the second half.

Supporters will be hoping to see more of Firmino in the near future, and Rodgers was asked whether he would be ready to start at Anfield on Monday.

“He’s building up his fitness really well,” he said.

“He helps himself because he trains to the maximum every single day.

“[He’s a] good guy as well, every aspect of life over here in Liverpool he’s thrown himself into – football, language – he’s done really well.

“He is getting very close [to starting].”

Football - Liverpool FC Preseason Tour 2015 - HJK Helsinki v Liverpool FC

One new signing who missed out on making his competitive debut last weekend was Danny Ings, whose second-half substitution was thwarted by Philippe Coutinho‘s winner.

Rodgers suggested that the striker may have to wait to make his first appearance for the Reds, due to a light schedule at the start of the season.

“For all the players that I’ve explained and recognised that between now and the end of the month it could be difficult [with one game a week],” he said.

“After international break the games come thick and fast.

“For the likes of Danny and the other players we had that [behind-closed-doors] game [against TNS].

“He’s settling into life well here.”

In Benteke, Clyne, Gomez, Milner, Ings, Firmino and Divock Origi, Rodgers has a host of different tactical options to deploy.

The manager will be hoping this variety will see his side improve over the course of the season.

Speaking during his pre-AFC Bournemouth press conference, Brendan Rodgers hinted at departures for a host of Liverpool players this summer.

rodgers-pre-afcb-presser

Mario Balotelli, Jose Enrique, Fabio Borini and Lucas Leiva could all leave Liverpool this summer, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Monday night’s home clash with AFC Bournemouth, the manager hinted at departures for “players who want to play.”

Asked about the futures of the peripheral quartet, Rodgers said: “It’s natural at this stage there will be moves, I’m sure, for some players.

“Every player is of the understanding of where he stands in the squad – the spirit’s strong, the spirit’s fine.

“There’s always going to be that speculation, but I’m sure there will be some movement for players who want to play.”

Balotelli, Enrique and Borini have all been exiled from training with the first-team squad this season, while Lucas was linked with a move away from Merseyside following his omission from last weekend’s match-day squad for the 1-0 victory away to Stoke City.

Lazar Markovic and Alberto Moreno, however, will continue to play a part in Liverpool’s season, despite both missing out at the Britannia Stadium.

Markovic, like Lucas, was left out of the squad, while Moreno was included on the substitutes’ bench.

On the pair, Rodgers said: “Both players are very talented players, clearly it’s why they have come here.

“Maybe for the first time in their footballing careers they will maybe find themselves not being a regular, [but] they know very well that it’s a long season and they will certainly be needed.

“It’s just about when the opportunity comes they take it and keep themselves in the team.

“They’re fighting and working well, and I’m sure they will both be ready when the opportunity comes.”

Moreno was kept out of the starting lineup by 18-year-old summer signing Joe Gomez, and Rodgers praised the former Charlton Athletic man for his performance at Stoke.

“I felt comfortable [to play him],” he said.

“Very quickly he showed me he can be a really important member of our squad.

“He can play in a few positions – centre-back being the main one. He’s a player who can add a great amount to our squad.”

Gomez performed comfortably at left-back, marshalling an experience opponent in Jonathan Walters, and Rodgers was happy with the spirit of the encounter, saying: “I spoke to [Jonathan] after the game and thanked him for giving him that experience!

“He’s 18 years of age, but what struck me when I first met him was his maturity. [At Charlton] his feet were very much grounded.

“He’s felt his best opportunity as a player to improve was at Liverpool.

“I’m sure there’ll be moments along the way where we’ll need to manage him, but at the moment he’s enjoying it.”

Liverpool: Rodgers set to keep faith with starting eleven

Liverpool: Rodgers set to keep faith with starting eleven

Liverpool will be hoping for a more fluent attacking display than last weekend then they host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Monday.

Summer signing Roberto Firmino scored a hat-trick in a behind-closed-doors friendly this week, which was also used to give the likes of Danny Ings, Emre Can, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho some match practice, but he is likely to remain among the substitutes as Brendan Rodgers is poised to name an unchanged side.

Midfielder Joe Allen is sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe promised on Friday that "everyone will get a chance" to feature at Anfield after new signings Max Gradel, Sylvain Distin, Tyrone Mings and Adam Federici all started on the bench last weekend.

Midfielder Harry Arter missed out against Villa and is facing a race to recover from groin and hip problems, while loan signing Christian Atsu and midfielder Shaun MacDonald could also be in contention after injury.

Opta stats

Liverpool have never lost to Bournemouth in six previous cup fixtures (W4 D2). This will be their first league meeting.

Bournemouth's two previous trips to Anfield to face the Reds have ended in a 4-1 defeat (FA Cup 3rd round replays in 1927 and 1968).

No side won more away games (13) or collected more points away (44) than Bournemouth in the Championship last season.

Liverpool only attempted four shots (excluding blocked) in their first game against Stoke City - fewer than any other side on MD1.

Liverpool launched 28 long balls on MD1 against Stoke; 12 more than they averaged per game in 2014-15 (16).

Only Man City (693) and Arsenal (481) completed more passes on MD1 of the 2015-16 Premier League season than Bournemouth (464).

Callum Wilson scored 12 goals in 23 games away from home in the Championship last season - only Ipswich's Darryl Murphy (13) scored more on the road.

Matt Ritchie assisted more goals than any other player in the Championship in 2014-15 (17).

Christian Benteke has scored 11 goals in his last 12 Premier League appearances.

Simon Mignolet has kept more clean sheets than any other Premier League goalkeeper in 2015 (10).

Eddie Howe will be competing against two of his “role models” when Bournemouth face Liverpool at Anfield on Monday.

The young Bournemouth manager, widely considered among the most promising in the country, observed Brendan Rodgers‘ methods while the Northern Irishman was in charge at Swansea before his appointment at Liverpool.

As a young player he also worked under Sean O’Driscoll, one of his predecessors at Bournemouth who this summer became Rodgers’ new assistant, and there is little question he has been strongly influenced by the two.

The three share similar philosophies on how football should be played, preferring creativity and possession to pragmatism or being direct.

“[Rodgers has] been a role model, really, for me,” said Howe, 37. “Someone you look up to and admire. I admired watching his Swansea teams play.

“When you try and analyse games and analyse systems, and philosophies, he’s certainly someone that I’ve looked at. I respect the way he conducts himself as well.

“I think he’s now building another Liverpool team, a new Liverpool team, this year, so it’ll be interesting to see how they do.

“Liverpool are going to be up there competing in the top places in the league, there’s no doubt about that. That’s why it’s going to be one of our toughest games of the season. [It’s] Liverpool’s first home game of the season, making it even more special. For us, we’ve got to make sure we turn up.”

O’Driscoll was appointed to replace Liverpool’s previous assistant manager, Colin Pascoe, after Rodgers controversially chose to reshape his coaching staff at the end of a disappointing season.

His arrival at Anfield surprised many observers but Howe was not among them because, as with Rodgers, O’Driscoll taught him so much.

“It won’t mean anything to me during the game because you’re working and you’re there to do a job and get a result, but it’s great to see Sean doing so well and at a great club like Liverpool, so congratulations to him on that move,” said Howe.

“I thought it was nothing more than he deserved, really, because he’s an outstanding coach. It’s great to see the good guys do well in football. I’m delighted for him but when we meet up it’ll be purely work.

“[O’Driscoll was] probably hugely influential, without me really directly knowing it, in a sense that you’re moulded by experiences and people that you work with and work for.

“I was associated with Sean for a long time, way back to my youth team days. Naturally, when you look at someone and observe them closely you inherit their beliefs and some of the ways that they work.

“I certainly believe Sean had a huge part in my management style. Obviously he’s moved on and I haven’t seen or worked with him for a long time, but I think that stays with you. I was very lucky, as a young professional, to have such a forward-thinking coach as Sean.”

Howe also said Bournemouth are not at present bidding for any players, including reported targets Charlie Austin or Jonathan de Guzman.
