Following Brendan Rodgers’ comments after Dejan Lovren’s debut on Sunday, Jack Lusby asks whether the Croatian is the Jamie Carragher replacement Liverpool have been waiting for.

Finally, Liverpool – seemingly – have a cohesive, competitive defensive unit.

It may have taken the club around a decade, but following the signing of Alberto Moreno, in an initial £12 million deal, from Sevilla, Reds fans can hopefully sleep safe in the knowledge the club’s back line is complete.

Central to this realisation is another summer signing, Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren.

The 25-year-old joined the club from Southampton last month, and has immediately drawn comparisons to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

Brendan Rodgers compared Lovren to the 737-cap Reds legend following the side’s friendly win over Borussia Dortmund.

The Northern Irishman, speaking to journalists in his post-match press conference, lavished praise on the cultured centre-back, claiming “Dejan was perfect. He is exactly what I’ve been looking for since Jamie Carragher left.”

When Carragher retired last summer, it was abundantly clear this was not only a player, but a character, who would take some replacing.

Rodgers clearly believes so, but is Lovren truly the replacement Liverpool have been waiting for.

In short, yes.

A Debut to Remember

Signed during the Reds’ lucrative pre-season tour of the USA, Lovren was unfortunately denied the opportunity to join up with his new teammates due to visa issues; this wasn’t wholly disastrous, as Seba Coates thrived in his stead.

This meant that the Croat had to wait until the beginning of May to make his long-awaited debut for the club.

Deployed as the left-sided centre-back alongside Martin Skrtel, Lovren performed with all of the enthusiasm clearly pent up waiting on the Mersey shores for the first-team’s return.

The former Lyon man gave a flawless performance worthy of Rodgers’ “perfect” analysis.

To continue the Reds manager’s Carragher comparison requires the outlining of the Bootle-born former vice-captain’s on-field qualities.

An uncompromising tackler with a canny ability to read the game and act with intelligence and aggression, Carragher was renowned as one of the toughest centre-backs in world football.

Against Der BVB, Lovren took matters into his own hands, in a performance reminiscent of the raw qualities of the Reds former No. 23.

In a defence alongside Javier Manquillo, Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel, the Reds needed a leader—throughout the contest, Lovren could be seen barking instructions and encouragement to his defensive partners.

Following the game, Skrtel told LiverpoolFC.com that “[Lovren] will make us stronger, so I really welcome his arrival – and it will only make me work harder.”

Rodgers continued his praise by outlining Lovren’s qualities, summarising: “He is a dominant, No.?1 centre-half, who reads the game well, offers good guidance to the back four and the rest of the team.”

Furthermore, much like Carragher, Lovren showed his ability with the ball at his feet, particularly with an incisive pass towards Philippe Coutinho to help set up Daniel Sturridge’s opener.

The Brazilian received the praise, but Lovren was as much involved as Coutinho, cutting through the Dortmund midfield with consummate ease.

Elsewhere, Rodgers detailed the centre-back’s aerial expertise: “Just like he showed against us last year he’s dominant in the box – both in ours and the opposition’s – and I thought he was excellent.”

Physically and mentally, against Dortmund on Sunday Lovren looked every bit the on-field Carragher replacement the Reds have been waiting for.

Carragher-Character

Alongside this performance-related comparison, so early into his Reds career Lovren is exuding the raw enthusiasm and commitment to the club that typified Carragher’s tenure at Anfield.

The centre-back was quick to pledge his unerring loyalty to the club following his signing.

In an early interview, Lovren told LiverpoolFC.com that:

“It’s a dream come true. I’m happy and glad to be here… After I played at Anfield last season, I said to myself: ‘One day I hope I’ll be able to play here for Liverpool’. The fans will know from the first minute that I’m a player that will give 100 per cent on the pitch.”

This is a commitment continued through Lovren’s frequently-updated Twitter account, with the Croat expressing his joy at his debut and a love for the city of Liverpool.

Carragher would bleed on the pitch for the club, literally, and this is due to this passion for the city, the club and its fans.

Seal of Approval

Finally, the most convincing facet to this comparison is a seal approval from the Reds legend himself.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo , Carragher outlined his belief that Rodgers had found “the leader the Reds need.”

This can be paired with an expert analysis of Lovren’s game by Carragher and Gary Neville, courtesy of Monday Night Football—the 36-year-old recognised at the time, prior to Liverpool’s interest in the Croat, that this centre-back was the real deal.

Continuing his Lovren-manifesto via the Echo, Carragher tipped the defender as a future Liverpool captain, claiming:

“Centre-backs normally make great captains… You look at him and he has the potential to make a big powerful impact at the back and that’s what Liverpool need.

“The game we highlighted on Monday Night Football was at Old Trafford and he was coming up against Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, two world class strikers, and he more than held his own – in fact he came out on top.

“I don’t think the price tag is the biggest thing in the world it’s more how he deals with being a Liverpool player, what’s expected of him and the fact that he’s been brought in to improve the side.”

Carragher clearly joins Rodgers in the belief that Lovren can be Liverpool’s new leader, now it’s up to the centre-back to prove he has the mettle to back up these assertions.

Jamie Carragher: Fancies Chelsea

Jamie Carragher: Fancies Chelsea

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher says Liverpool's squad is now stronger - but the team may not be after Luis Suarez's exit.

The Liverpool legend will have his say on the teams, players, managers and stories surrounding Sky's live weekend fixtures - and in this column he looks at the clubs that will be on show on the first Super Sunday of the campaign.

So read on for his thoughts on Manchester City's title hopes, his former side Liverpool, a summer of change at Southampton and why Newcastle needed fresh blood...

You have said on your Twitter page that Chelsea are your favourites for the title, but which of Man City and Liverpool do you think will challenge them most?

CARRA SAYS: Probably City. They won the title last year so know they have what it takes; their manager, Manuel Pellegrini, will only be stronger in his second season in charge; and then you have that spine. Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero is the strongest spine in the Premier League and perhaps one of the strongest in Europe, so City's success will rest on those three.

They haven't added loads of players and other teams have been more active, but they do have a tad more depth now, particularly with the signing centre-back of Eliaquim Mangala. That was a position they desperately needed to strengthen, even though Matija Nastasic is now fit and Martin Demichelis improved as last season went on.

I also like the signing of Bacary Sagna as while I don't think he will bump Pablo Zabaleta out of the right-back spot on a regular basis, he is a great back-up plan as he has been one of the most consistent full-backs in the Premier League for five or six years. Fernando, the midfielder from Porto, has also come in but some people have wondered why Pellegrini hasn't been more active, especially since you could argue that the last time City won the title they didn't strengthen enough. However, there aren't too many players they could realistically get that are better than what they have. We mustn't forget how powerful that squad is.

What have you made of Liverpool's transfer business?

CARRA SAYS: They have wrapped up a lot of their deals early and that was vital, whether or not Luis Suarez had stayed. The squad didn't have enough depth last year and with the added games in the Champions League they desperately needed a number of new players to give them the luxury to chop and change and keep key men fit. They also needed to add quality because they didn't have enough last season, something that was shown by Brendan Rodgers using only 25 players in the Premier League. Losing Luis Suarez, the best player in the division, is a massive blow for the club, though, and while you can say the squad is now stronger, I don't think you can say the team is.

The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and the new boys such as Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Lazar Markovic will now have to take their game up a level to compensate for Suarez's absence. Everyone needs to take more responsibility, score more goals and have a bigger impact in the team. That goes for Daniel Sturridge, too, but it's not like he didn't perform last term; we're not talking about a player on the periphery but a key man and guaranteed starter. That said, he now knows he is probably the best attacking player Liverpool have got and that people will be looking at him to deliver. I think he will do that but I would like to see another striker come in to give him a helping hand.

There has been an exodus at Southampton, so what do you expect from the Saints this season under new manager Ronald Koeman?

CARRA SAYS: We can't get way from the fact they have lost some quality with Lallana, Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw, and Calum Chambers moving on, so they could be one of the teams in the dogfight and looking over their shoulders, but I don't for one minute have them as certainties to struggle. Koeman has great experience, winning the Eredivisie twice with Ajax and once with PSV, as well as turning around Feyenoord and leading them to two second places and a third in the last three years. He has also won the Copa del Rey with Valencia, but I think his biggest asset this season could be Sammy Lee, a top coach who knows the Premier League inside out.

People seem to be forgetting Southampton have signed some players as well as lost them. Feyenoord's Graziano Pelle was the second top scorer in the Eredivisie last year, while Twente's Dusan Tadic got lots of goals and the most assists, too, so they do have some pedigree and it's just about how quickly they can adapt to English football.

I like Fraser Forster as a signing, too; he is a big, strong, commanding 'keeper who needed to come down to England, be tested a bit more and really push Joe Hart all the way for that England No 1 jersey. If these players hit the ground running, then I think Southampton will be fine because there are still some good players there, though it's vital that they keep Jay Rodriguez and Morgan Schneiderlin at the club and add a few more.

Newcastle have been busy, bringing in the likes of Siem de Jong and Daryl Janmaat. Did they need to go big this summer?

CARRA SAYS: Most definitely. Newcastle were hovering around the top six last season but when they lost Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain in January their season seemed to fall apart. I really felt for Alan Pardew as everyone at the club - coaching staff, players, fans - seemed like they couldn't wait for the season to be over. I really thought Newcastle needed to not only up the quality but also the mood and some of the signings should do that. Colback is a local lad who will get stuck in and De Jong was a big, big, player for Ajax and I think we can expect to see a very exciting Newcastle team this season. Whether Hatem Ben Arfa is part of that remains to be seen, having had his No 10 shirt taken by De Jong and been linked with a move away.

There is no doubt that the boy has talent and he has scored some absolute belters, but he can fade in and out of games and skill is only one part of being a good player. Pardew sees Ben Arfa around the training ground every day and if he had a great player there who could help his team then I'm sure he'd use him, particularly as they didn't pull up any trees last season. The fact Pardew's not perhaps shows that he's not got the right attitude, though that's just me speculating. Newcastle supporters may be thinking: 'Why is such a dangerous player out of favour when he could really do with him?' but I always feel the manager knows best in situations like this.

And, finally, what do you expect to happen on Super Sunday?

CARRA SAYS: I think Liverpool will come flying out of the blocks and make a very fast start, just as they did last season at home to Stoke, and, if I'm being honest, I think this will be very difficult for Southampton. Newcastle versus Man City, meanwhile, is a tricky one because Pardew's team will be fired up at home and City, albeit with a lot of first teamers missing, got done pretty convincingly by Arsenal in the Community Shield. City smashed Newcastle 4-0 at the Etihad on the first day of last season but I don't see anything like that this time around and while I'd just lean towards the visitors, I wouldn't be surprised if Newcastle got some kind of result.

The new season starts on Sunday for Liverpool and Oliver Smith tackles the key questions ahead of the 2014/15 campaign for The Reds.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 10, 2014: Liverpool's players line up for a team group photograph before a preseason friendly match against Borussia Dortmund at Anfield. Front row L-R: Philippe Coutinho Correia, captain Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Javier Manquillo, Raheem Sterling. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

For the first time since 2009, Liverpool begin the new season with title hopes grounded in something more than just blind hope. After taking the title race down to the last day of the season in 2013/2014, Liverpool will look to go one better and finally clinch their nineteenth League title in 2014/2015.

Here are 10 key questions for the new season…

What are the key lessons Liverpool need to learn from last season?

There are two main lessons that Liverpool need to learn from last season if they are to improve on their second placed finish:

Goal difference matters – the Reds finished the season with a goal difference 14 goals worse than Manchester City, who eventually pipped them to the title post on the final day of the season.

The Citizens’ superior goal difference was due to their defensive superiority- they only scored one more goal than Liverpool but conceded 13 fewer- and effectively widened the gap between them and second placed Liverpool by an extra point. Rodgers’ troops will need to cut out results such as 3-6 away to Cardiff and 4-3 at home to Swansea since, even though three points were gained from those fixtures, sloppy goals were needlessly conceded, undermining the Merseysiders title credentials.

Philosophy is great, but you need a healthy dose of pragmatism to win titles. In the two games that lost Liverpool the title last season, Brendan Rodgers demonstrated a perhaps noble but ultimately naïve dedication to his footballing philosophy, when a more pragmatic approach could have steered the title away from Manchester and in the direction of Merseyside.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Monday, May 5, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet along with Glen Johnson and Martin Skrtel look dejected as Crystal Palace score the third goal during the Premiership match at Selhurst Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Against Chelsea at Anfield towards the end of April Rodgers set his side up to go all out for victory, even though a draw would have left the fate of the title in their hands. Chelsea played the perfect counter-attacking game and punished the Reds as a result, winning 2-0. Then, in the penultimate fixture at Selhurst Park, Liverpool kept on trying to add to their total, rather than shutting up shop at 3-0. Crystal Palace went on to exploit their defensive weaknesses and remarkably scored three times in the space of ten minutes to all but end their title dreams.

Where are the Reds’ strengths and weaknesses?

Liverpool’s strengths lie in attack, and their weaknesses in defence. Even without Suarez, their attack is one of the most formidable in the League and has the potential to continue to frighten defences in 2014/2015, as demonstrated by the four-goal demolition of German giants Borussia Dortmund in the Reds’ final pre-season friendly.

0245__3958__lovren1000e_517X310

A lot of work needs to be done to sure up Liverpool’s defence, although hopefully the signings of Dejan Lovren, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno will go a long way to tightening up the Reds’ back line. Rodgers has shown that he can produce wonderful attacking teams; he now needs to prove this season that he can add defensive rigour to the attacking brilliance that his squad unquestionably possesses.

Who will be the key player?

2013/2014 was the season that Jordan Henderson proved that he was good enough to play for Liverpool and justified his £16 million price tag. His abundant dynamism and energy in midfield, which so often went overlooked, were sorely missed in the final few games after his injury time red card against Manchester City. They will be needed now more than ever as the Reds face a more demanding fixture list this season.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 10, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia celebrates scoring the third goal against Borussia Dortmund during a preseason friendly match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Philippe Coutinho is another player who could come into his own this season. He’s been offered a bumper new contract by Brendan Rodgers and was the stand-out performer in pre-season. If he can step up to the plate and take over Luis Suarez’s mantle, the Reds’ attack won’t suffer in the Uruguyan’s absence.

Can we cope without Suarez?

Following on nicely from the previous question, yes; but with certain qualifications. Firstly, Sturridge, Coutinho and Sterling must progress further and remain injury free. If they do, Sturridge and Sterling could form the next SAS, while Coutinho will be the playmaker pulling the strings in between the lines.

Secondly, we need to sign another striker as back-up to Sturridge. Lambert will be much more useful off the bench than Aspas, but I wouldn’t trust him to be the sole striker for an extended spell if Sturridge was on the side-lines for a significant amount of time.

Will we ‘do a Spurs’?

A £100 million spending spree is always fun, but not always wise. Funded by the £75 million sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Brendan Rodgers has been spending money like it’s going out of fashion this summer, splashing out £20+ million on three occasions. Although most of his signings make sense in isolation, whether or not they do as a whole is less clear.

CHARLOTTE, USA - Saturday, August 2, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers against AC Milan during the International Champions Cup Group B match at the Bank of America Stadium on day thirteen of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There’s a very real possibility that so many new arrivals will disrupt squad cohesion and negatively affect the team’s performance, replicating Tottenham Hotspur, who struggled last season after selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record fee and spending the proceeds on seven new signings, whose cumulative goal tally was only one better than Bale’s from the previous season. At the end of the day, only time will tell whether we ‘do a Spurs’, but it’s rightly a real worry for many Reds supporters.

Is our defence good enough?

One of Rodgers’ transfer priorities has been sorting out Liverpool’s weak and vulnerable defence, which leaked 50 goals last season, more than most teams in the top half of the table.

As a result, Lovren and Moreno have been brought in from Southampton and Sevilla respectively in order to solve long term problems at centre back and left back. Meanwhile, Manquillo has signed on loan from Atletico Madrid to provide Glen Johnson with some much needed competition at right back.

All three appear to be quality players with plenty of potential and, if they can gel as a unit, then our defence should show a marked improvement on the 2013/2014 campaign.

Where will we finish?

I would love to say that I think Liverpool will go one step further this year and win the Premier League title for the first time, but I just cannot see it happening unfortunately. The loss of Luis Suarez is significant and it will take time for the fresh faces in the squad to gel. The demands of Champions League football will also put a strain on the squad, making a title tilt more difficult. A top four finish is certainly realistic, though, and I think the Reds will finish third and secure automatic entry into the 2015/2016 Champions League.

How far will we go in the Champions League?

It depends to a large degree on how difficult a group we are given in the draw on 28th August. Liverpool have been out of the Champions League since the 2009/2010 season, hence we are in seeding pot three alongside the likes of Galatasaray and Sporting Lisbon. That means there is a strong chance that the Reds will face a European giant such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Juventus in the group stage, which could reduce our chances of progressing far.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND. TUESDAY, MAY 3rd, 2005: Liverpool supporters on the Spion Kop sing "You'll never walk alone" before before the UEFA Champions League Semi Final 2nd Leg against Chelsea at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The goal should be to reach the knock-out stages and, if Liverpool get out of their group, who knows how far they might go with the backing of the Kop behind them on magical European nights at Anfield once again?

Can we win a domestic cup?

We certainly can, whether or not we will is a different matter. The Reds’ focus will be on the League and European football this season, so FA Cup and League Cup campaigns will probably be sacrificed in order to secure progress on those two fronts. Expect to see youngsters such as Jordon Ibe given the chance to stake a claim for more frequent first team action in the domestic cup competitions.

“I want a trophy this year. My sole aim in the first three years was to get us into the Champions League. I knew what it meant to the city and the supporters, so my drive in that period was to get us back.

“Now I want the club to win the big trophies again. That’s what I said to the players. The expectancy this season is continual improvement. We want to win. To be successful is winning trophies.”

– Rodgers outlines his aims to win a trophy this season

Will this be our year?

If ‘our year’ means the year that we finally win the League after almost a quarter of a century of heartache, then no – I think Liverpool are still a season away from winning the title. However, this could be our year to show that we are a genuine force in European football by going far in the Champions League and automatically qualifying to compete in arguably the game’s biggest competition once again in 2015/2016.

2014/2015 Liverpool Season Preview: 10 Key Questions

Kolo Toure: Intends to see out his contract at Anfield

Kolo Toure has snubbed a proposed switch to Trabzonspor in order to spend another season at Liverpool.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that a fee to take the Ivorian defender to Turkey had been agreed and that personal terms were in the process of being thrashed out.

Toure has, however, revealed that he has turned down the option of moving on.

Despite finding himself behind the likes of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger in the Anfield pecking order, the 33-year-old feels it would be wrong to join a ‘lower league’ at this stage.

Toure will therefore spend the 2014/15 at Liverpool and see out the two-year contract he signed upon his arrival from Manchester City as a free agent in the summer of 2013.

He told Sport Ivoire: “I am still at Liverpool. I had talks with the coach who clearly indicated that I was part of his plans.

“It is a privilege to be at Liverpool. I am very happy to wear the shirt of this legendary club.

“I feel good physically. At 33 years of age, I am ready for any challenge. It is because I have been spared from serious injuries during my career.

“I continue to work hard in training to keep up the momentum, and it is why the coach wants to keep me at Liverpool.

“Trabzonspor are interested in me, but I have expressed my pleasure at being a Liverpool player.

“Yes, it is always a possibility to join a lower league for more playing time, but I am a competitor and I decided to stay at Liverpool.

“However, the situation can change at any time, but for the moment I am at Liverpool and I want to carry on with the club.”

Brendan Rodgers: Bringing top talent to Anfield

Brendan Rodgers: Bringing top talent to Anfield

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool's summer transfer business shows they are capable of attracting Europe's top talent.

Four years without UEFA Champions League football has posed problems on and off the field at Anfield, with it difficult to land big names without the draw of high-level continental competition.

A sustained title challenge in 2013/14 has, however, returned Liverpool to that elite group and helped to open doors in a competitive marketplace.

Top marksman Luis Suarez may have been offloaded to Barcelona, but the £75million generated from that sale has been pumped back into the squad.

Rodgers has been able to lure Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Rickie Lambert, Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Divock Origi and Javier Manquillo to Merseyside, while a deal for Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno is close to completion.

On the business carried out and what it means for Liverpool and their standing in the global game, Rodgers said: “It’s a huge indication of the progress of the club, a really good symbol of where the club is at.

“We have made huge strides in the last couple of years. That ability to attract top players is great.

“Lovren was a really good player for Lyon and Southampton. He was a guy sought after by a number of clubs, but for him to say he only wanted to come to Liverpool was great.

“Young Markovic had two or three other clubs waiting to take him, clubs where he had mates from his international team. But he wanted to come to Liverpool.

“These guys watch football throughout Europe. They watch us and want to be part of what we’re doing.

“It’s the growth. It hasn’t happened by accident, a lot of work and time has gone in.

“The most important thing is to have an identity. There’s real excitement around the club.”

Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign at home to Southampton on Sunday. Jack Lusby looks at how the Saints have shuffled their pack this summer.

Liverpool vs. Southampton, Anfield – Sunday 17 August, 13:30pm

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool welcome Southampton to Anfield on Sunday for their opening fixture of the 2014/15 Premier League season.

The Reds have transformed their squad somewhat this summer, having made eight signings (so far) following the announcement of a deal for Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno.

Three of these players — Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren — have arrived from their opponents on Sunday. The Saints choosing to capitalise on their players’ high stock following a successful period under Mauricio Pochettino.

Pochettino left the club for Spurs at the beginning of the summer, and Calum Chambers, Luke Shaw, Dani Osvaldo and Billy Sharp have also joined Lambert, Lallana and Lovren through the exit door.

This has meant new manager Ronald Koeman has had to start life at Southampton with an almost blank canvas. The Dutchman has signed five new players so far, with more promised.

The Southampton side that challenges Liverpool on Sunday will be far removed from the side that defeated the Reds early on last season.

So who are Southampton’s new boys?

Ronald Koeman

New manager Koeman was appointed mid-way through June, and as such has had around two months to stamp his identity on a thin squad.

The 51-year-old was an attacking central defender in his playing days, which saw spells with Gronigen, Ajax, PSV, Barcelona and Feyenoord.

In a period of six years from 1989 to 1995 at Barcelona, Koeman scored a remarkable 67 goals in 192 appearances — the Dutchman was renowned for his accurate free-kicks.

As a manager, Koeman has taken charge of Ajax, Benfica, Valencia and Feyenoord amongst others.

Joining Koeman in the dugout will be former Red Sammy Lee, and the pair will look to establish a typically Dutch brand of possession-based, attacking football at Southampton.

Fraser Forster

Age: 26

Position: Goalkeeper

England goalkeeper Fraser Forster joined Southampton from Celtic in a deal worth around £10 million.

The gargantuan shot-stopper will likely usurp former regular Saints No. 1 Artur Boruc between the sticks from the off, and Forster’s ability demands this.

A great reflex stopper, Forster also has a dominant command of his box, particularly useful given the loss of Lovren this summer.

Ryan Bertrand

Age: 25

Position: Left-back

Former Chelsea man Ryan Bertrand was, seemingly, a long-term target for Rodgers at Liverpool, but—luckily—the Reds eventually plumped for Moreno.

The Englishman is a solid left-back option with considerable experience, namely in the Champions League, of which Bertrand boasts a winners’ medal after having successfully shackled Bayern Munich’s right flank.

Not quite enough for Liverpool, but Bertrand will have a point to prove with the Saints.

Saphir Taider

Age: 22

Position: Centre-midfield

With Osvaldo moving on loan to Inter, the Serie A side sent one of their own to the south coast in return, with Saphir Taider joining the Saints on a season-long loan deal.

A 22-year-old Algerian midfielder, Taider is, according to Koeman, “part of our philosophy to bring in talented, young players.”

“He can play as a controlled midfielder, but he can also move up around the box and up front,” the manager continued, referencing the loanee’s versatility—Taider is another player that can make up for the loss of Lallana.

With two appearances for Algeria at the World Cup, Taider is well-oiled ready for the season to commence.

Dusan Tadic

Age: 25

Position: Left-wing

Onto a lesser-known name, Serbian playmaker Dusan Tadic has, ostensibly, been tasked with filling the void left by Adam Lallana as the Saints’ principal creative outlet.

A £10.9 million signing from Dutch side FC Twente, Tadic is clearly one from Koeman’s file-o-fax.

The 25-year-old scored 16 goals and made 14 assists in 33 games for the Eredivisie side last season, according to Squawka—a substantial return for an attacking midfielder.

Tadic will be looking to translate this form into the Premier League and, although the gulf in quality between the two leagues is vast, Liverpool should be well aware of the merits of signings from the Dutch league.

Graziano Pelle

Age: 29

Position: Striker

Rickie Lambert joined Liverpool having scored 28 goals, with a further 15 assists, in 75 Premier League games since Southampton’s promotion — big boots to fill.

The man Koeman has acquired for the task is Italian centre-forward Graziano Pelle, who joins from the manager’s old club Feyenoord on a three-year deal.

Pelle scored 55 goals in 66 games under Koeman in the Eredivisie, and the 51-year-old will be hoping this ability can be applied in the Premier League.

Described by The Guardian as a “Lambert-style late bloomer,” Saints fans will be hoping this is truly the case.

Shane Long

Age: 27

Position: Striker

Back to pastures more familiar, and reports emerged on Wednesday that Southampton had agreed a fee with Hull City for striker Shane Long.

A move to the south coast will be the Irishman’s second transfer in a year, having only joined Steve Bruce’s side in January.

With proven Premier League goalscoring pedigree, the reported £12 million to be paid for Long is justified, particularly given Jay Rodriguez’s current long-term injury lay-off for Southampton.

If a deal is completed in time, it is likely Long would feature at Anfield on Sunday.

Likely Southampton line-up vs. Liverpool: Forster; Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Bertrand; Wanyama, Davis, Ward-Prowse; Pelle, Tadic, Long
