Boss Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool must shape up defensively or forget about qualifying for the Champions League.

The Reds have kept only five clean sheets in their last 37 matches and while their manager believes the seven-point gap to Champions League places is by no means insurmountable, they will have to do considerably better at the back.

"There is always a period of pressure you will come under," said Rodgers ahead of Saturday’s trip to Sunderland.

"You can have the ball a lot of the game and you will still have to defend at some points in that game.

"You have to remain calm; the single biggest thing has been mistakes. It is not so much structurally but we have a tendency at times to make mistakes and that has cost us.

"That is something we work hard to get the players to eradicate from their game.

"From the Crystal Palace game (when they lost 3-1 in late November) we needed to change, get back the model of our work, and from that we have slowly got back to a decent level again.

"There is still a lot of work to do but part of that is to ensure we don't give away silly goals."

West Ham, Arsenal and Tottenham stand between Liverpool and Southampton in fourth but Rodgers remains confident, with the imminent return of striker Daniel Sturridge from a long-term thigh injury, it can be achieved.

"It's going to be tough but I am looking forward to the challenge," he added.

"We have a great spirit at the moment and footballing ideas are returning to our game and will push very hard in the second half of the season to bring success here.

"The players are improving and we can see how seven points may seem a lot but it certainly can be whittled away.

"You just have to consistently win games and perform well and that is our idea."

Rodgers has already said he does not expect to make many, if any, additions in the January transfer window despite continually being linked with numerous players.

Rodgers was non-committal on the latest speculation surrounding Manchester City's James Milner.

"James is a wonderful player, an outstanding footballer, but players get linked consistently here through agents trying to, by virtue of association, get a better deal," he added.

"I will never speak about any player until they were signed in the door. You can fire a list of names at me and you will get the same response."

Rodgers also does not expect many departures, apart from possibly on loan.

"If everyone stays there might be a few who need to go out on loan because they are not playing so much," he said.

"At this moment I wouldn't envisage too many departures."

Ahead of the Reds trip to Sunderland (Saturday, 12.45pm kick off) we speak to Gavin Henderson of The Roker Report.

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 15, 2012: Flags fly at hale-mast outside Sunderland's Stadium of Light before the Premiership match against Liverpool as a mark of respect for the 96 victims of the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster. (Pic by Vegard Grott/Propaganda)

Our corresponding game at Anfield a little over a month ago saw a dour 0-0 draw – should we expect more entertainment this Saturday?

Nope. Our results over the course of the season perfectly reflect the way we play. We take very few risks and are first and foremost focused on preventing our opposition from scoring. The key battle could be between Liam Bridcutt and Raheem Sterling, as if either one of them manages to get the edge over the other it could have a key baring on the end result. I think it’ll be cagey and tight, so who knows. Sometimes those type of games throw up strange results.

That stalemate arrived in a glut of 0-0 draws for Sunderland after the 8-0 hammering at Sunderland, how have you responded since then?

With much of the same, really.

The Manchester City result was disappointing, as was the Hull game, because we found ourselves in a position to take a point or three and ended up on the losing side on both occasions. It’s clear we’re primed for a lower mid-table finish this season and it’s not very fun to watch. It’s all we can expect really though, because we don’t have money just lying around to sign quality players.

Have your hopes / aims for this season changed since August?

Not particularly, no. The management and our director of football made it fairly clear that this season wasn’t going to be particularly fun, but that we want to use it as a base to build from going forward. We’ve rarely not fought against relegation as a Premier League club and it’s important that we change that, starting now. Last season, as fun as it was, was pretty much a disaster off the pitch and the right steps are being taken to right some wrongs. It won’t be easy.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, March 26, 2014: Sunderland's manager Gus Poyet during the Premiership match against Liverpool at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Much has changed for Liverpool since we last visited the Stadium of Light (Suarez’s return from suspension in September 2013) – from an outsider’s perspective, how do you view what’s happened at Anfield this season?

I’ll be honest, I think the writing was on the wall when Brendan Rogers was signing average players for huge money in the summer. Although the likes of Lovren, Lallana (who has probably been one of the better of your recent acquisitions, in fairness) and Lambert seemed like decent signings at the time, they are not players that are going to further a side who should have won the league and were about to embark on a return to the Champions League.

I think it’s fair to say that the club should have been better prepared for losing Suarez but you can’t plan for losing someone like Sturridge for as long as you have done. I suppose that once he’s back fit and in the team, it may give the whole club a lift. He’s a quality player.

Who do you view as our biggest threats?

Obviously, Raheem Sterling running at Wes Brown and John O’Shea scares me. It’s important for us that, if you do go with three at the back again, we keep things tight and take our chances. Now Gerrard’s future has been resolved I’d assume it’s been a huge weight off his shoulders and you might see him return to the type of form that served him so well last season.

And our weaknesses?

I’m hoping we’ve been practicing our set pieces this week because, quite frankly, Liverpool are awful at dealing with corners. I’d be looking to put whoever is playing in goal under pressure immediately and see how he reacts.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

What’s your thoughts on former Sunderland man Simon Mignolet?

I love him. Come back Simon. (I know he’s been shite for you lads like, but he’s a hero here!)

Who will be the key player(s) for Sunderland on Saturday?

As I alluded to earlier, I think Liam Bridcutt’s role is vital, should he play in the holding role left vacant after Lee Cattermole’s injury. If he – or Jack Rodwell – plays there, it’s important they have a great game if we’re taking any points from this match. Adam Johnson is in a decent spell of form at the minute and he always turns up against the bigger sides, especially at home, so I’d be expecting him to take advantage of Markovic bombing forward and leaving gaps in behind.

Where do you see our two sides finishing the campaign?

I see Sunderland finishing pretty much where we are now, without too much drama. The important thing to realise this season is that there are many, many poor sides in the bottom half of the league and we’re not losing games – especially against the top sides – that other teams are.

Going forward, you guys need Sturridge back and scoring goals if they’re going to make even the top six, which I presume would be massively underwhelming from the standpoint of a Liverpool fan.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 8, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson in action against Chelsea during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

As a former Sunderland player, what are your thoughts on Jordan Henderson‘s rise to Liverpool captain – do you find it a surprise?

Not particularly, no. He was earmarked as Gerrard’s natural replacement in the side when he initially side and you’ll not find many harder working players than Jordan. He had his detractors when at Sunderland but many people forgot he was only a young lad when he broke through here and his improvement has been great to watch. We’re proud of him.

Khabarangin! James Milner dilaporkan menjadi top target Liverpool di perpindahan pemain musim depan

Pada mulanya saya menganggap Milner ini adalah pemain yg sederhana dari system of play. Gagal membawa impak.

Peluang utknya datang dialukan. Pendapat peribadi saya, Milner adalah penambahan yg sgt menguntungkan, disamping status sbg free agent. YNWA!

Liverpool will not be signing a long-term replacement for Simon Mignolet this January, but are seeking an experienced goalkeeper on a short-term deal this month, according to The Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce.

BURNLEY, ENGLAND - Boxing Day, Friday, December 26, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Brad Jones is replaced by substitute goalkeeper Simon Mignolet against Burnley during the Premier League match at Turf Moor. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Liverpool’s goalkeeper situation has bordered on farcical this season, with Mignolet having been dropped “indefinitely” last month, only for Brad Jones to pick up an injury against Burnley on Boxing Day, meaning Mignolet made his return.

Pearce writes in The Echo on Friday “Liverpool may bring in an experienced goalkeeper on a short-term basis to compete with the under-pressure Simon Mignolet. ”

But, the club’s search for a long-term No.1 will wait until the summer.

We wrote earlier how Barcelona’s Marc Andre ter-Stegen could be one option for the Reds this January – although he isn’t “experienced”.

The best option would, of course, be Chelsea’s Petr Cech but that appears unlikely – especially since Chelsea allowed Mark Schwarzer to join Leicester City last week.

Reports in Italy suggest Lucas Leiva could be set for a January exit, with the Brazilian apparently keen on a move to Inter Milan.

LEICESTER, ENGLAND - Tuesday, December 2, 2014: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva in action against Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez during the Premier League match at Filbert Way. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

According to Gazzetta dello Sport , the 27-year-old has spoken to Inter boss Roberto Mancini about a January move.

Lucas has enjoyed something of a resurrection at Anfield this season, returning to the heart of midfield and adding much-needed defensive cover to the team.

This rumour will likely come as a surprise to many, given that he has become a key player again, and because of the loyalty he has shown the club since joining in 2007. Barring Steven Gerrard, he is now Liverpool’s longest serving player.

Although the Brazilian’s potential exit would be a blow to Brendan Rodgers, it’s worth stressing that the Reds can do better in that role.

Lucas’ return to form has been refreshing without question, but he is still limited. His lack of pace is alarming at times, and he doesn’t have the technical ability to dictate a game from the middle of the park.

There are better options out there, most notably Lars Benders, as Jack Lusby recently discussed, and assuming Lucas did leave this month, it would be imperative that the club bought in a replacement.

If they let him go without having someone else lined up, it would be absolute madness.

There were reports on Friday linking Liverpool with a move for Barcelona goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, and it would be a shrewd acquisition in an area where the Reds are desperate for reinforcements.

Ter Stegen

According to the Mirror , Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring the highly-rated Germany stopper to Anfield, as they look for replacements for Simon Mignolet.

The 22-year-old has been on Rodgers’ radar for a while now, having been linked with a move for him back in 2012.

Ter Stegen joined Barcelona for £9.7m from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer, and along with the likes of Thibaut Courtois and David de Gea, was seen as the most talented young goalkeeper around. He is also tipped to become Manuel Neuer’s long-term heir for the national team.

His first season at Camp Nou hasn’t gone to plan, however, and he has seen himself fall behind Claudio Bravo in the pecking order.

Although he has played in all six of the Blaugrana‘s Champions League fixtures, he is yet to feature in a single La Liga game and has spoken of his current frustrations to German daily Bild.

“It’s good to be at Barca but the situation is difficult. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care and it isn’t easy being a spectator.

“I want to be the No.1 and I’m convinced that’s something that will happen if I continue to improve and work hard.

“I can only try to prove that I am the best [of the two goalkeepers] and that’s why I came here, so it’s something I will fight for.”

It’s clearly been an exasperating period for the 22-year-old, who the majority expected to be Barca’s undisputed first-choice in goal when he arrived at the club.

Chances are he will stay in Spain and fight for his place, and the likelihood of him leaving so early in his career there appears slim.

There can be no denying the quality he would bring to Anfield though, whether it be his reading of the game, shot-stopping or use of the ball.

Liverpool’s goalkeeping woes

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 1, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and Alberto Moreno look dejected as Newcastle United score the first goal during the Premier League match at St. James' Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Reds’ troubles between the sticks were exposed yet again during their 2-1 win over AFC Wimbledon on Monday evening, as Mignolet produced yet another clanger.

He showed no authority whatsoever in dealing with a Wimbledon corner, allowing the monstrous Ade Akinfenwa to prod home and bring the League 2 side level in the process.

People will point to the fact that, other than that error, the 26-year-old was good, but at this level you cannot be making such regular gaffes.

Brad Jones’ spell in goal was arguably worse than Mignolet’s. The 32-year-old has been a lower league player for the majority of his career, and has barely ever been first-choice. The most games he has ever racked up in a season is 23, with Middlesbrough in 2009/10.

Rest of the season

You can’t help but feel that if Rodgers doesn’t bring in a new goalkeeper this month, instead relying on Mignolet and Jones until the end of the season, it could ultimately cost the Northern Irishman his job.

The Reds are battling in three cup competitions and still hold aspirations to squeeze into the Premier League top four. Signing a new keeper would certainly improve the chances of success.

With reports suggesting there will be little activity at Anfield this month but that the Reds are keen to bring in a keeper on a short-term deal, a loan move for ter-Stegen this month could suit all parties.

RUMOUR - PATAH HATI

Patah hatiku

Membawa derita

Merajuklah diri

Merajuk diri

Tak tentu haluan

Patah hati ku

Membawa derita

Merajuklah diri

Merajuk diri tak tentu haluan

Ku harap janjimu

Bahagia selalu

Sayang

Rupanya patah

Rupanya patah di tengah jalan

Hendak diulang... Hendak diulang

Resah menanggung

Sayang

Kenanglah jangan

Kenanglah jangan disebut pun jangan

Hancur hatiku

Di dalam nestapa

Mengenangkan nasib

Mengenang nasib diriku malang

Maksud hatiku

Maksud hatiku

Bahagia bersama

Sayang

Apakan daya

Diriku miskin
