Steven Gerrard was used as Liverpool’s holding midfielder in the 5-3 victory at Stoke on Sunday, with Lucas Leiva in a more advanced role than usual. It was a tactical move that has led to much debate.
The inspirational captain was making his 650th appearance for the club and scored from the spot for the crucial third goal.
After the match, Gerrard explained that the ‘new’ role is where Brendan Rodgers has told him he will be used more often in the future.
“The manager’s told me, moving forward I’ll play this role a lot more,” Gerrard explained. “It’s going to take a little bit of getting used to, but I’ve played it many times for England and a few times for Liverpool in the early days so I’ll be comfortable in there once I get a few games in.”
Rodgers himself explained post-match to BBC Sport:
“He has got the personality to play in that controlling role.
“He gives us great variety in his passing. We saw today he picked it up from deep and stretched the game with his vision and quality.”
“He’s someone who fits the profile of that role; he does it a bit more with England.
“I have spoken to him a lot about it and it was just about timing. We saw today that he played really well. Steven showed great leadership as well.”
At 33 years old, Gerrard is unlikely to be a long-term solution in the role for Liverpool and The Reds have been linked with Yann M’Villa, the French holding midfielder, this January.
However, also due to Gerrard’s age, he is no longer able to play a more attacking role, particularly if Liverpool are to implement their high-energy pressing game in midfield. It’s certainly a conundrum for the manager.
We asked supporters on twitter for their thoughts on Gerrard as a holding midfielder. Here’s the best responses.
What do you think of Gerrard as a holding midfielder? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers insists he will only dip into the transfer market for quality additions this January.
Speaking after his side’s 5-3 victory at Stoke on Sunday, Rodgers explained his desire to strengthen – but only if the right player(s) are available.
“I would still like to strengthen [the squad] if I could,” he told BBC Sport. “But only if the right quality is there.”
Rodgers has been linked most heavily with winger Mohamad Salah, full-back Martin Montoya and holding midfielder Yann M’Villa so far.
Holding Midfield
One area that Rodgers may be looking to strengthen is that holding midfield position, where Steven Gerrard was deployed in the rollercoaster of a game at Stoke.
Discussing the change, Rodgers said “He has got the personality to play in that controlling role.”
“He gives us great variety in his passing. We saw today he picked it up from deep and stretched the game with his vision and quality.”
Gerrard, at 33 years-old, is clearly not the long-term solution and Rodgers will be seeking a more mobile and dynamic player for the role, such as M’Villa.
Season’s Chances
Meanwhile, Rodgers was asked about his side’s chances for the rest of the season.
“We entered into the game today, 18 games to go, nine at home, nine away, knowing seven of those nine away were against teams in the bottom half” Rodgers explained post-match, quotes via The Guardian.
“That doesn’t mean they are gimmes by any means – it is a very tough league – but certainly we have shown enough that we are going to be challenging and that is all we ever wanted to be.
“We never stated we are going to win the league, to jump from where we have been at, we just needed to be in the conversation.”
Rodgers side are now fourth but the top seven are so close that places mean very little. Everton are just one behind in fifth, Spurs two behind in sixth and Man United five behind in seventh.
Next up are home matches with Aston Villa and Everton.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has a wealth of options after Daniel Sturridge's goal-scoring return against Stoke, says Jamie Carragher.
Sturridge came off the bench on 66 minutes after nearly two months out with an ankle injury and marked his comeback with an 87th-minute strike that finally shattered the Potters' resistance in an eight-goal thriller.
Fellow forward Luis Suarez scored twice to take his Premier League goal tally to 22 and Carragher says their partnership gives Rodgers great flexibility with his formation.
Electric
"Suarez and Sturridge have been a revelation all season," said the former Liverpool and England defender and Sky Sports pundit.
"It was interesting to see how Liverpool would set up when Sturridge came on. First of all it looked as if Luis was going to go to the left but it looked as though Liverpool went to a 4-4-2 and Jordan Henderson then went to the left.
"Sturridge played in a great ball [for the fourth] and Suarez's finish was Thierry Henry-like. Those two are electric up front."
He added: "These are the selection dilemmas that Brendan Rodgers has got now. Philippe Coutinho went off [for Sturridge] and while we've been talking about the position that Henderson plays in the middle of a three, when he brought Sturridge on Liverpool played 4-4-2. Henderson went to the left, Lucas dropped back alongside Steven Gerrard.
"With these players coming back it doesn't just give him options in terms of players and numbers, it gives him options in terms of changing the formation.
"We've seen Liverpool play with a back three this season. It will be interesting with Sturridge coming on and making that impact how Brendan Rodgers sets up in the next few weeks."
Disappointed
Liverpool squandered a 2-0 first-half advantage before the break but took the lead again when Gerrard stroked home a 51st-minute penalty, awarded for Marc Wilson's challenge on Raheem Sterling.
But Carragher said the spot-kick should not have been given - both because Wilson's challenge was innocuous and because Sterling should have been pulled back for hand-ball in the build-up to the incident.
"The main talking point is the penalty and, for me, I don't think it is," he reflected. "There is the slightest contact but football is a contact sport and I'd be disappointed if I was Marc Wilson.
"Gerrard has got a great record with penalties. The pressure was on him - he's just come back into the side - and from 2-0 up it's now 2-2 and the penalty is in front of the Liverpool supporters as well. I think everyone was delighted for him when he put it away."
After the match Gerrard told Sky Sports how well he is adapting to playing in a new, deeper holding role at Rodgers' request and Carragher said that it's a position the 33-year-old is ideally suited to.
"I think he'll want to play there. The longer it goes on the more he'll realise that maybe he's not the Steven Gerrard of Istanbul - charging about the pitch, getting goals, creating goals.
Quarter-back
"This is something that you see a lot from midfielders now - dropping in between the centre-backs. It's like a modern theme within the game.
"He's like a quarterback with his range of passing but he can also get back and get blocks in. You know you are going to get that from Steven Gerrard whether he's playing the holding role or is attacking midfield role.
"In that position he adds a little bit more than Lucas in that position with the ball. I sometimes wonder if they could prolong his career by playing him at centre-back. In 12-18 months' time he might even go there because not many centre-backs would have his range of passing.
"But for the time being it looks as though he's going to play this role because it's the first time I've ever seen Lucas Leiva play in an attacking midfield role for Liverpool and the lad played well."

Ada apa dengan Anfield? Tak tahu lah ada apa tapi banyak team-team besar yang datang dari seluruh dunia tumbang di Anfield. Paling tidak pun, mereka sulit sekali untuk menewaskan kita. Any fan would have taken Liverpool’s 5-3 victory at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday afternoon at the beginning of the day, having never won at Stoke City in the Premier League.
It was an ugly win for Brendan Rodgers’ side, embedded in a thrilling encounter in the pouring rain of Staffordshire.
As Liverpool’s attacking play continues to improve and draw admirers, and the ‘SaS’ of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge took off where they left off, defensive frailties remain at the back for the Reds.
For the first time since Liverpool’s dreary day in Hull at the start of December, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure lined up in central defence for Liverpool.
Neither player looks focused when playing alongside each other, constantly covering for the other and switching sides of central defence.
Skrtel has built up a good defensive partnership with £17million summer signing Mamadou Sakho, and will be the first to welcome him back to the team for next Saturday’s league game at home to Aston Villa.
Both Aly Cissokho and Glen Johnson under-performed, too.
Cissokho looked both clumsy and very short of confidence both defensively and in attack. His first touch often broke up what could have been swift Liverpool counter-attacks.
Furthermore, the Frenchman gave away a string of fouls , which only encouraged Stoke’s midfield forward, causing problems in the centre for Liverpool.
Whilst Cissokho will no doubt be replaced by the currently injured Jose Enrique or Jon Flanagan upon their returns, Johnson’s drop in form is becoming a concern.
Johnson was often left exposed where he would usually comfortably deal with attacks down the opposition left wings.
For Stoke’s first goal, a Peter Crouch header from Marko Arnautovic’s cross, Johnson was lacking in keeping up with the game.
Questions must also be asked of Steven Gerrard in the holding role in midfield.
With a defensive making tackles in the right places, and playing the ball successfully and intelligently, Stoke’s attacks could have been broken up before threatening the goal.
Liverpool’s attack covered for the shambles happening at the back, and the rise of Raheem Sterling continued, now playing a major part of Liverpool’s attacks.
The combination of Suarez and Sturridge for the Reds’ fourth and fifth of the afternoon was a sight for sore eyes. Their partnership, and the goals they accumulate between themselves, could be the difference between a top four finish for Liverpool, or not.
As it is, Rodgers’ Liverpool are looking good for keeping up with the teams at the top of the table, now just five points off the top of the Premier League.
Use the January transfer window wisely to fix the patches in defence, and defensive midfield, then there is no reason why Liverpool’s attack can’t guide the Reds to great things come May.

6- Simon Mignolet: tidak meyakinkan, bergelut dengan bola tinggi. membuat kesilapan dalam gol ketiga Stoke, bagaimanapun beberapa kali beliau berjaya menyelamatkan keadaan.
5- Glen Johnson: berjaya mengekang Marko Arnautovic, tetapi sedikit terleka ketika gol pertama Stoke.
8- Raheem Sterling: Berjaya "membunuh" Erik Pieters setiap kali naik menyerang; aset terbaik Liverpool.

8- Raheem Sterling: Berjaya "membunuh" Erik Pieters setiap kali naik menyerang; aset terbaik Liverpool.
Penyelamat pasukan.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hailed his side's attacking display as they got the better of Stoke City 5-3 after an eight-goal thriller at the Britannia Stadium.
The Reds moved back into the top four as they finally picked up their first Premier League success at the Britannia Stadium after an all-action encounter with Stoke.
Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal from Ryan Shawcross and a Luis Suarez striker before former Reds stars Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam drew Stoke level before the break.
Steven Gerrard restored Liverpool's lead from the penalty spot and Suarez added a fourth before Jon Walters set up a dramatic finale.
However, the returning Daniel Sturridge scored his side's fifth goal as Liverpool withheld a Stoke fightback to take all three points and Rodgers was delighted with his side's character.
"Well I thought they were brilliant," Rodgers told Sky Sports. "We made mistakes defensively which wasn't so good and we will assess that. but to come here and get five goals and I think it is the first time Liverpool have won here in the Premier League so to do that score the goals we done and put in the work and effort that we did was fantastic so I am delighted for the players.
"I think you could see that I think the aggression in our game and we were really offensive in our play today, but we are disappointed we went to 2-0 in the first 38 minutes it was the perfect away performance we then lost our concentration and all of a sudden it's back to 2-2.
"But again we went out in the second half and we went again showed the character of the team and to finish up on the offensive and you need to defend of course moments that is what you do here it is notoriously difficult place to come.
"But to play how we played and get five and maybe score one or two more makes me very, very happy."
Rodgers conceded the penalty that got Liverpool back in front in the second half - awarded after Raheem Sterling went down under light contact from Marc Wilson - was a bit of a gift from the referee.
"I think it was soft if I am being honest," admitted Rodgers. "I think it's one where if you are the attacking team you are happy to get it.
"I would call that a 'Spanish' penalty, one when you watch European football where the attacker goes into the defender - the defender obviously doesn't get the ball but the contact puts him over.
"We took that and that gave us the momentum in the game again at 3-2 and from that we were able to kick on."
Rodgers also hailed the performance of captain Gerrard, who operated in deep-lying position alongside Lucas in the Liverpool midfield.
"Well he is a very influential player," noted Rodgers.
"I think you see in his range of pass he is someone I feel that has the profile to play that role how he co-ordinates the game, his range of passing, his leadership, his personality.
"You need a player with big personality to play in that controlling role because you are on the ball a lot you've got to make choices whether to play deep, whether to play short and I thought he was outstanding in that."
Rodgers also had words of praise for Sturridge after he marked his return from injury with a goal and an assist.
"I thought he was outstanding as well coming in having been out so long his pace, his movement for his goal was brilliant.
"Well you can see for Luis' goal in the second half just his pace takes him away a great bit of skill to come inside and work it around the corner and Luis does what he does which is finish.
"Both of them are really, really outstanding players and anyone will tell you the top players can play with each other."

Steven Gerrard hailed a "big" win for Liverpool as the Reds defeated Stoke 5-3 at the Britannia Stadium to climb into the top four in the Barclays Premier League.
Gerrard stroked home a second-half penalty while Luis Suarez added a double to take his league tally for the season to 22 from just 16 appearances.
Daniel Sturridge, back from injury, was also on target as Liverpool recorded their first league victory at Stoke in more than 29 years, and Gerrard was in no doubt of the importance of the result.
"It's big. Our record against Stoke in the league is poor away from home and we wanted to put that right today. I thought we showed tremendous character," Gerrard told Sky Sports.
"It's results like this we need if we want to finish in the top four."
The final scoreline by no means tells the whole story, with Liverpool guilty of squander a 2-0 lead.
Goals by Liverpool old boys Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam had the hosts level at the break, but the Reds went back in front through Gerrard's penalty before pulling away for the win.
"The first 40 minutes we controlled the game," Gerrard added. "It was very comfortable then we went a bit soft, made a couple of mistakes, and it became a real tough game from then on."
Gerrard was operating in a deep-lying position alongside Lucas in the Liverpool midfield and admitted he was still adjusting to his more withdrawn role.
"It's something we've been working on in the week and the manager's told me moving forward I'll play this role more," he said.
"It's going to take a little bit of time to get used to, but I've played it many times for England and a few times for Liverpool in the early days, so I'll be comfortable in there."
