Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard could be rested for the FA Cup fourth round visit of Bolton on Saturday.
With a must-win Capital One Cup semi-final second leg at Chelsea on Tuesday the 34-year-old, who missed last weekend's win at Aston Villa with a tight hamstring, is likely to drop to the bench.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed 17-year-old midfielder Jordan Rossiter will be involved in some capacity, while defender Glen Johnson, midfielder Joe Allen and striker Mario Balotelli all returned to training this week.
Provisional squad: Mignolet, Can, Lovren, Sakho, Manquillo, Henderson, Lucas, Moreno, Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling, Ward, Skrtel, Enrique, Rossiter, Gerrard, Williams, Markovic, Lambert, Borini, Ojo.
If Gerrard is rested, captaincy will be handed over to Jordan Henderson, who was yesterday praised by Brendan Rodgers for the way he has taken the leadership baton in Gerrard’s absence this season.
“When I first came in he was searching for his status at the club but the team who brought him in before knew he was a good persona and a strong character and that has continued,” Rodgers told press at his Melwood pre-match press conference.
“Now you see his leadership qualities on and off the field; he will protect the team and his colleagues and he is a wonderful ambassador for the club.
“I felt by giving him the vice-captain he could carry that if Steven wasn’t playing and he does it with great pride and honour.
“As a footballer he is still improving and developing and he will continue to do that.
“He was given the vice-captaincy role, that doesn’t always mean that player goes on to become the captain. It is not automatic.
“But certainly at this moment in time when Steven doesn’t play he does it in great fashion.
“When you see him in the tunnel leading out the team he has great presence and good status and the supporters respond to him. He is in a really good moment.”

There were strong rumours on Thursday evening that Philippe Coutinho is set to extend his stay at Anfield, with a new contract close to being agreed.
The Daily Mail reports that the young Brazilian is in the final stages of securing a new four-and-a-half year deal with Reds.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sees the 22-year-old as an integral part of his squad, and someone who has the ability to drive the club forward in years to come.
Coutinho has been in eye-catching form of late, producing some outstanding individual performances full of creativity, skill and hard work.
Rodgers was full of praise for him in his pre-Bolton press conference on Thursday, outlining why the attacking midfielder’s performances have improved after a sticky start to the campaign.
“He was outstanding the other night (against Chelsea). It was a difficult start to the season for him because if you think of Phil Coutinho, he has that bit of magic to make the key pass in the final third and combines with people ahead of him so well.
“Last year he had a [Luis] Suarez and a [Daniel] Sturridge to make those passes to and he could work well with their style.
“At the beginning of this season, he didn’t have that. Probably until six or seven weeks ago, his ability to make that threaded pass through wasn’t on because he didn’t have that [energy and movement upfront]. He’s a class act, and he’s still got so much growth and development to undertake here.”
The diminutive Brazilian joined Liverpool two years ago this month, and has been arguably Rodgers’ most successful signing during his tenure, along with Daniel Sturridge.

Brendan Rodgers recently hinted at some outgoing loan deals in January. Here, Jack Lusby looks at five players that would benefit from such a move.
Quizzed on January departures last week, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers suggested that “there might be a few who need to go out on loan because they are not playing so much.”
This is a great way of ensuring progress for young players. Under the guidance of Steve McClaren for example, the returning Jordon Ibe’s development was nurtured, and the benefits of a temporary move like this are obvious.
Liverpool must continue to tailor their promising youth players’ loan moves with the right club, and the right management.
In January, this should continue, and importantly this must be with a view to gaining a role in the first-team.
Here are five Liverpool players whose progress would benefit from a loan move this January.
With Rodgers utilising a wing-back system for the first-team at present, a ready-made option for the role of right wing-back in Liverpool’s academy is 20-year-old Ryan McLaughlin.
A pacey, attacking full-back, McLaughlin recently told LiverpoolFC.com that his dream was to “win silverware with Liverpool,” highlighting his commitment to the club, but also the long road ahead.
McLaughlin spent a short spell with Championship side Barnsley last season, making nine appearances, but is yet to make a senior appearance for Rodgers’ Liverpool.
At 20 years old, McLaughlin would need to break through to the first-team in the near future.
A loan move to a top-level Championship side could help him to develop his game, much like Andre Wisdom, who enjoyed success at Derby County last season.
Like McLaughlin, Australian left-back Brad Smith is well-suited to the current wing-back system at Liverpool, owing to his great pace and attacking ability.
Smith made his Liverpool debut last season, replacing Joe Allen as a 59th minute substitute in the Reds’ 2-1 loss away to Chelsea. Deployed as a left winger, this underlines his attacking nature, and a deft flick with his first touch displays a great confidence.
A powerful performance in Liverpool’s post-season friendly win over Shamrock Rovers evidenced Smith’s ability and potential.
Having already been recalled from a loan spell with Swindon Town this season, Smith needs another temporary move to continue his development.
Jordan Rossiter may have made the headlines with a debut goal in Liverpool’s 2-2 penalty shootout victory over Middlesbrough in this season’s League Cup, but alongside the midfielder was fellow academy midfielder Jordan Williams.
After the game, Rodgers highlighted this pair of debuts as “a step towards them playing for the first-team regularly.”
True to his word, Rossiter has made Rodgers’ substitutes’ bench in the Premier League of late.
At 19 and two years Rossiter’s senior, Williams has less time to establish himself—and seemingly less chance of breaking into the first team at this juncture.
However, clearly possessing the potential and the backing of the manager, a loan move in January could be ideal in nurturing Williams’ talents into a first-team role at Liverpool next season.
Academy striker Jerome Sinclair made his first and only senior appearance for the club to date in Liverpool’s 2012/13 2-1 League Cup victory over former club West Bromwich Albion, becoming the club’s youngest ever player in the process, at just over 16 years old.
Since then, Sinclair’s progress in the first-team has been, understandably, muted, with the poacher utilised in both the U18s and U21s last season, with great success.
A pacey, robust strike option, Sinclair has all of the tools to become a feature in Rodgers’ attacking line in the future, but requires the experience that a loan move would provide.
Perhaps a lower-level Championship side would take the punt with the goalscorer this January?
Signed from Bayer Leverkusen for £1 million in 2012, German striker Samed Yesil came with a great reputation stemming from an exceptional goalscoring record at both domestic and international youth levels.
Yesil said all the right words on joining the club, too, stressing the importance to “improve physically on my body because the Premier League is a hard league,” and work hard to make the first team.
However, Yesil’s physicality has proven the biggest issue, with the striker suffering a pair of crippling anterior cruciate ligament injuries in 2013.
Now back fit, Yesil should be looking for game time with a Championship club in order to prove his quality in front of goal and build his physicality to impress Rodgers enough for a chance in the Liverpool first team.
Who else should Liverpool send on loan this January? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists he does not want to lose any more senior players in the summer and remains hopeful out-of-contract defender Glen Johnson will sign a new deal.
With captain Steven Gerrard joining Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the season the Reds boss admits he cannot afford to lose the diminishing number of experienced players in his youthful squad.
That means midfielder Lucas Leiva, who has been linked with several moves this season but has subsequently become a key part of the side's revival, is also likely to be retained.
Negotiations with right-back Johnson, who will be 31 at the start of next season, stalled at the beginning of the campaign as the club wanted to extend his stay on reduced terms due to his age.
That was not accepted by the England international and, despite there being no progress since, Rodgers hopes an upturn in the team's fortunes plus the attraction of staying at one of Europe's biggest clubs will persuade the player to remain.
"We can't have three or four leaving next season," said Rodgers.
"The intention will be to keep everyone, partly because of the mix in the group.
"Steven will obviously be a loss, when you are losing someone of that calibre of man and player it would be a loss to any club, but you move on.
"For the younger players to develop their potential they are going to need that seniority around them. You can't just have a whole group of young players.
"Glen Johnson we want to keep, Lucas we want to keep.
"I know the club and his (Johnson's) agents spoke towards the beginning of the season but I am hopeful he will stay and we can find a solution so he can be here.
"Obviously, like every player, you want that security and it sorted earlier than it is now.
"But when he looks at it he realises he is at one of the biggest clubs in the world with a team which is developing and growing that he would want to be a part of.
"I think he will try to find a solutoin with the club to stay here. He loves being here, he enjoys working with the way we are playing.
"His game will adapt over the next couple of years. He is not the maurading full-back of six or seven years ago but he is still a quality player and he has a lot to offer with his experience and football.
"He is one we would look to keep."
Rodgers believes his squad are now starting a slow build-up to be title challenges again next season after running Manchester City a close second in May.
But in order for that to happen he needs squad stability and he those players who have not seen much first-team action that they must remain patient and play a supporting role.
"Players have to understand it is about the team," he added.
"If you are going to have success you have to be unselfish – the manager will pick the team to win the game.
"Players have to realise sometimes they will play and sometimes they will be out of the team and they have to respect that is the manager's decision for the ethos of the team.
"It is difficult for players when they don't play. I speak a lot with those who aren't playing but I have shown I will view (things) in training and lots of players here who were maybe not playing, by showing their level and commitment, have played their way into the team and Lucas is a prime example of that."
The Brazil international looked to be heading out of Anfield last summer after playing second fiddle to Gerrard in the defensive midfield role.
When his absence continued in the current campaign it seemed certain he would depart in January but a change of formation has seen him reintegrated.
Since his return to the starting line-up in late November Liverpool have lost just once in 15 matches – their only defeat coming at Manchester United when he was dropped.
"He was out of the team last year because of the nature of the set-up with Steven in that co-ordinating role," explained Rodgers.
"I'm not one who likes to play with two holding players. If you play with two holding midfielders sometimes they get in the way of each other.
"Now we have flipped it as we play with two in there but one of them is as defensive one and he has done that very well." PA

Emile Heskey has become an unfunny joke among sections of the football world, but the striker had the model Liverpool career, writes Jack Lusby.
Liverpool welcome Bolton Wanderers to Anfield on Saturday for their FA Cup Fourth Round clash, and the tie should see a Merseyside return for former striker Emile Heskey.
Heskey joined Neil Lennon’s side, along with fellow veteran Eider Gudjohnsen, on a short-term deal just before Christmas, and the pair immediately made an impression in a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.
At Bolton, Heskey is defying his recently manipulated reputation as one of England’s most risible strikers, with his name seemingly punctuating sentences for many brain-dead ‘lads’ over the past five years.
Heskey is the punchline to an incalculable number of unimaginative jokes, and undeservedly so.
On Saturday, Heskey returns to the ground where he made his name as a briefly unstoppable Premier League striker—one who was better than many seem to remember.
Early Days
Liverpool signed Heskey from Leicester City in March 2000, in an £11 million deal, making him a club-record transfer at the time, and manager Gerard Houllier’s first home-grown signing.
Why?
On Heskey’s sale, then-Leicester manager Martin O’Neill described the striker as “irreplaceable,” continuing: “We as a club did everything we could to persuade Emile to stay with us for as long as possible.”
Heskey’s form for the Foxes had made him one of the Premier League’s most-coveted forwards, rightly underlining Houllier’s enthusiasm in signing the 22-year-old.
In six years with Leicester, Heskey scored 40 goals in 156 league games, including seven in the 1999/00 season before his March move.
It was, however, more Heskey’s style of play that had made him a talisman at Filbert Street, and the striker brought this to Liverpool.
This is what Houllier recognised, as he detailed on Heskey’s 2000 unveiling:
“You take a player because he is a talent and because you think he will work out well for the team…I think at his age he is not the finished product. Like every player here he will want to progress and improve. You take players not for the number of goals they score but for the role they can play for the team.”
Heskey proved particularly vital in his first full season with Liverpool, after establishing himself slowly following his March move.
The Treble Season
Many remember Heskey as a pure physical, battering ram of a striker, indebted to his spells with Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa, but his pace aided him in his early days, and he was at his peak at Liverpool.
The striker kicked off his tally with the only goal in a 1-0 win over Bradford City, and it came at the perfect time, with Reds fans beginning to question his quality and place in the side.
Strong performances in wins over former club Leicester, and fierce rivals Everton, helped endear Heskey to the Liverpool faithful, and his confidence increased throughout the season.
Heskey scored his first, and only, Premier League hat-trick that season, in a 4-0 victory over Derby County at Pride Park.
In a dominant team performance, Heskey displayed an all-round excellence—on that day, the striker was truly unplayable, and this is a quality indicative of his best days at Liverpool.
Heskey ended the 00/01 season with 22 goals from 56 appearances, including a career-high 14 league goals, and secured top scorer in the FA Cup, with five goals in five games.
In interview with Boardwalk Empire star and boyhood Reds fan Stephen Graham last year, Heskey talked about how significant his success with Liverpool remains to him:
Notably, Heskey points to England’s 5-1 victory over Germany as his most memorable moment, and that the win was inspired by Liverpool players.
This helps mark just how good the striker was during his time at the club.
Heskey & Owen
On joining Liverpool, Heskey declared a deciding factor behind his decision to move to Merseyside was the chance to play with an international teammate.
Heskey claimed: “I have played with a lot of forwards and we have bonded together and that includes Michael Owen…I found it an exciting prospect to play alongside Michael.”
Nowadays it is difficult to imagine the words “Michael Owen” and “exciting” in a sentence, but at the time this was a mouth-watering partnership in the making.
Owen and Robbie Fowler, Liverpool’s primary strike options before Heskey’s arrival, both offered similar qualities—as pure finishers they were deadly but, particularly with the former, contributed less than requisite in build-up play.
Heskey offered a different dimension to the Reds.
The perfect build man, little man partnership, Heskey and Owen established an exceptional understanding with each other than went some way to ending Fowler’s glittering career on Merseyside before his 2006 return.
In Heskey’s four full seasons at Liverpool, Owen scored more goals than he had managed before or since, with 99 from 181 appearances.
In 2001, Owen won the Ballon d’Or and, while no one can take away from the striker’s achievement, a big factor in this was undoubtedly his partnership with Heskey for Liverpool and England.
Heskey was the perfect foil for Owen and the model striker for Liverpool: modest, hard-working and tactically astute.
Emile Heskey embodied the Gerard Houllier reign at Liverpool, and despite his success under the calculated Frenchman, he is often looked down on in the pantheon of Reds players.
But on his return with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, the former England man should be lauded for his success on Merseyside.

Liverpool host Bolton Wanderers at Anfield late Saturday afternoon as the Reds make a return to FA Cup action for their second fixture of the competition. Ben Twelves takes a look at the numerous team selection options available to the Liverpool manager.
In a busy week of cup competition football for Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool, the Reds turn their attentions to the FA Cup on Saturday evening as they host Championship side Bolton in the fourth round.
Rodgers’ side had to overcome a testing fixture against League Two battlers Wimbledon in the last round and the Liverpool boss will be hoping for a more straightforward evening than 19 days ago where Steven Gerrard’s excellent brace rescued the Reds and ensured no cup embarrassment would materialise.
The Reds continue their recovery and progression after the dismal first half of the season with Rodgers’ side growing game by game. Liverpool will need to display their new-found confidence and produce a strong display again on Saturday to move into round five, as it promises to be a tricky fixture against Neil Lennon’s men – who arrive full of confidence themselves having lost just once in their last 12 matches in all competitions.
With Liverpool facing a hectic and demanding fixture list next month, the matter of the winner-takes-all second leg against Chelsea in just three days’ time and another vitally important Premier League fixture to come when West Ham visit Anfield, the match against the Trotters provides the perfect opportunity to rest certain players ahead of the challenging period and that is what Rodgers must do.
The Team
The match is set to come too early for Daniel Sturridge and Brad Jones is missing once more, but Rodgers could welcome back Glen Johnson, Dejan Lovren, Joe Allen and Mario Balotelli to the fold as all are now available having returned to full training this week.
Rodgers stated in his pre-match press conference that changes are likely, but one of those who won’t feature is returned loan star Jordon Ibe, who is frustratingly cup-tied having featured for Derby in round three. Jordan Rossiter is set to be involved however, and fellow prospects Jordan Williams and Sheyi Ojo – who have both had first team involvement this season – will also be hopeful of inclusion in the match-day squad.
It’s vitally important that Rodgers makes a number of changes to allow for rest for key players ahead of the all-important return leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, and the Liverpool boss could give a number of first choice options the afternoon off such as Jordan Henderson, Steven Gerrard, Lazar Markovic, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling.
Leaving those players out allows the Northern Irishman to hand match action to players who have seen opportunities limited such as Javier Manquillo, Jose Enrique, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini in addition to the four returnees, and Rodgers has a wealth of options ahead of him which he must make full use of.
The Line Up
Rotation is a certainty for Saturday’s fixture, but the big question is over how heavily Rodgers should alter his XI. The ideal answer would be that the Reds boss makes as many changes as possible, and by doing so that should see just five of those who have played consistently in recent weeks keep their places in the team – Simon Mignolet, Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Emre Can and Steven Gerrard.
Johnson, Manquillo, Allen, Enrique, Lallana and Borini should be the names taking the six vacated shirts, and introducing those into the starting XI should see Liverpool line up looking like this late Saturday afternoon:
Alternatively, the Liverpool manager – as suggested in his media-conference – could choose to deploy a less rotated XI retaining most of the spine of the team that has seen an upturn in performances to help maintain the current momentum.
Making a slightly fewer number of alterations to his starting team and keeping a more familiar look, I expect Liverpool to line up looking like this:
While a game the Reds should comfortably win, it’s important Rodgers’ men don’t underestimate the ex-Premier League side – who will arrive with former favourite Emile Heskey – and ensure that the job is done professionally, without complications to allow for a smoother journey into the fifth round than the previous stage and to concentrate on Tuesday’s huge encounter.

Liverpool lineup options vs Bolton: Rodgers to rotate but not heavily?
