Liverpool Ladies have retained the Women’s Super League title in the most dramatic style on the final day of the season.

Matt Beard’s side went into the final round of games as the outsiders for the title, in third place in the league. But a defeat for Chelsea at Man City, 2-1, and Birmingham drawing with Notts County, 2-2, meant Liverpool’s 3-0 win against Bristol Academy gave them the title.

Liverpool were such outsiders that the WSL trophy had to be driven by motorbike from Manchester to Widnes midway through the second half.

Goals from Natasha Dowie, Lucy Bronze and a penalty from Fara Williams gave Liverpool victory in at the Select Security Stadium, securing the title for a second successive season.

LFC Ladies finished the season level on points with Chelsea, but with a superior goal difference by two. Birmingham ended third, a point behind and missing out on a Champions League place.

The Ladies head to Sweden next where they hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg of the Champions League tie against Linkoping.

Emre Can: Hoping to spend many years at Anfield

Emre Can: Hoping to spend many years at Anfield

Emre Can has revealed that he turned down the option of returning to Bayern Munich in favour of joining Liverpool.

Having graduated out of the academy ranks at the Allianz Arena, the Germany U21 international was still being closely monitored by Bayern over the summer.

They had included a buy-back option in the deal which took him to Bayer Leverkusen in 2013, but knew they had to wait until 2015 before that clause kicked in.

Rather than wait to discover what their decision would be, Can decided to accept an offer from Liverpool – with his £9.75million release clause triggered by Brendan Rodgers.

A discussion with the Anfield boss convinced the 20-year-old that the Premier League was the right place for him, and he is now finding his feet in new surroundings.

Can said in the Liverpool Echo: “Bayern had a buy-back clause but that didn’t kick in until next year.

“There were some discussions with Bayern this summer but I decided the best thing for me would be to accept the opportunity to come to Liverpool.

“Before I came here I had discussions with Brendan Rodgers and that made my mind up. From those talks I was very positive about this move.

“This whole club is very ambitious and positive about how it wants to play football. That’s the way I want to play football, too.

“Liverpool believe in the same things and that’s why I came here. I want to stay here for a long time.”

Mario Balotelli: Yet to produce his best at Liverpool

Mario Balotelli: Yet to produce his best at Liverpool

AC Milan sporting director Umberto Gandini claims the summer sale of Mario Balotelli to Liverpool made 'everyone happy'.

The Italian striker completed a £16million move to Anfield late in the transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers was prepared to take a calculated risk on the ex-Manchester City man and bring him back to the Premier League despite his reputation for being difficult to handle.

Balotelli has made a slow start to his career on Merseyside, with Liverpool still working on his form and fitness, and he was dropped to the bench for a home date with West Bromwich Albion heading into the international break.

He has also been overlooked by his country for European qualifying duty, with his former employers at the San Siro suggesting that they are glad to be rid of a player who has lost his spark.

Gandini said in the Daily Star Sunday: “We all felt coming to Italy, to a place where he was loved, would have been the ideal environment for him to blossom into a star player.

“But it didn’t work out for both sides.

“Mario was not the kind of player we were looking for in order to have a better team on the pitch.

“On the other hand, he probably felt the Premier League was the best stage for him to perform on and he wanted to go back there.

“So Liverpool came at just the right time. It just made everyone happy.”

Balotelli netted 26 times in 43 Serie A appearances for Milan, but Gandini says the 24-year-old is not a natural goal-getter.

He added: “The way Mario plays is not like a pure number nine, a centre forward.

“Our problem at Milan was not having a forward who played in the box. But Mario was not used to doing that.”

The latest young player to be linked with a move to Liverpool is MK Dons man Dele Alli, and here Jack Lusby gives the lowdown on the midfielder.

Liverpool’s January transfer business looks set to kick off early, with the Reds already linked with a series of deals in the new year—the latest being MK Dons’ 18-year-old attacking midfielder Dele Alli.

The young Englishman is reportedly set to join the Merseyside club on a £9 million deal according to the Daily Express .

John Richardson claims that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers “has made the signing of the attacking midfielder a priority, knowing that Spurs have also been in touch with the League One club.”

Richardson continues that the club “have discussed a package which, with various add-ons, would see MK Dons bank £9m.

“Liverpool want to complete the deal once the next window opens in January and would then loan Alli back until the end of the season.”

Rodgers looks keen to strengthen his side early and, whilst a loan move back to the Dons may be on the cards, Alli’s talent, paired with his potential and energy, could see the 18-year-old slot into the Liverpool squad immediately.

Raw Qualities

At this point, Alli stands as one the most highly-rated young players in English football.

It is likely that, beyond Rodgers, his biggest fan is current Dons manager and former Liverpool Academy coach Karl Robinson.

After starring in the side’s 6-1 September victory over fellow League One side Crewe Alexandra, in which Alli grabbed a hat-trick, Robinson praised his young charge with the emphatic “I’ve gone past words now for him.”

“I just think he gets better and better and he does all his talking with the football.”

Alli’s performance in that encounter would not be of a surprise to any, after a barnstorming display in front of the cameras in the Dons’ 4-0 Capital One Cup victory at home to Manchester United.

The midfielder was deployed in a deep-lying role in what effectively became a 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2, and his bustling play helped break up United’s scant attacking opportunities with ease.

In particular Alli’s astute, decisive reading of the game saw him thwart United No. 22 Nick Powell time and again, with the midfielder’s strength doing the rest.

What’s more, however, Alli was able to recycle possession both from deep and burst forward to aid the persistent Dons attack with consistent success.

Forward Ben Reeves may have garnered most of the widespread praise for his three assists, but Alli was equally as impressive.

Alli is athletic, mobile and confident with the ball at his feet—paramount qualities within Rodgers’ midfield.

Depth

Reports linking Liverpool and Alli, as a central midfielder, come at a timely juncture, given the side’s current injury problems in that position.

Above all else, the absence of Emre Can, Joe Allen and Adam Lallana at times this season have pointed to a lack of depth in the Reds midfield—without the trio, Rodgers struggled and stuck, disappointingly, with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The return of Lallana, and ultimately the return of Daniel Sturridge, provides the manager with the option of a return to the successful 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 diamond structures.

In his recent overview of the young star, Henry Winter of The Telegraph described Alli as a “ball-winning, ball-using midfielder” and these are the exact qualities that would aid this system.

Continuing in interview with the midfielder, Winter quotes Alli in a mature assessment of the developing of a philosophy, akin to that of Rodgers’ midfield at Liverpool, in the English game:

“We’re all trying to play the same way, keeping the ball, closing the other team down, not sitting off, dominating games with possession and attacking quickly. All the clubs understand that possession is important. The way Spain have a philosophy as a country — possession — is what we are starting to do.”

On the strength of his performances and the intelligence of this assertion, signing Alli would provide a welcome depth to this Liverpool midfield.

Youth

Once more, following summer signings such as Can and Lazar Markovic, if Liverpool are to move for Alli in January this would point towards a long-term vision for the club under Rodgers.

Markovic has featured prominently this season, despite struggling for form thus far, whilst Can would surely have settled into a regular midfield role if his transition wasn’t stalled by injury sustained during the last international break.

That’s without mentioning the phenomenal progress of Raheem Sterling under the Ulsterman.

Without asserting that the Liverpool manager favours youth, it has been clear from the off that Rodgers is happy to give credit where credit is due, regardless of age.

Alli is a player that would continue this progress, with a mature talent and mentality.

Strengthening this argument, Dons manager Robinson detailed a fearlessness in the youngster that defies his age: “The kid handles pressure like it’s a walk in the park and at the highest level you have to perform under immense pressure.”

There will be an unquestionable increase in the pressure on Alli’s shoulders in a potential move into the Liverpool midfield, but despite his young years the midfielder is seemingly ready to compete in such an environment.

Value?

At a reported £9 million, at just 18 years old and performing exclusively in the lower leagues, it can be argued that there is a lack of value in a potential deal for Alli this January transfer window.

However, factoring the midfielder’s young age as a positive, and with Alli’s mature performance against United in the Capital One Cup, the Dons youngster can prove to be an astute signing for Rodgers.

In a midfield flooded with talent with the likes of Jordan Henderson, Allen, Lallana and Can in the mobile, central ranks, Alli may struggle to hold on to a first team role from the off.

However, the ageing Steven Gerrard may point towards an opening for the midfielder.

Alli clearly has the potential to develop his qualities as a powerful box-to-box talent, and this could suit a fluid Liverpool midfield; Can could find himself in Gerrard’s deep-lying role in the near future.

Prior to that, and assuming Alli will return to the Dons on loan until next season, the youngster can provide energy and depth to the Liverpool midfield.

Whilst £9 million may seem a significant outlay for such an inexperienced talent at this stage, securing the signing of Alli in January should be a provident move.

Would signing £9 million Dele Alli be a good move for Liverpool? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool attacker Raheem Sterling has reportedly agreed a new five-year deal at the club, which will see him earn a whopping £125,000 a week.

NEW YORK, USA - Wednesday, July 30, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the second goal against Manchester City during the International Champions Cup Group B match at the Yankee Stadium on day ten of the club's USA Tour. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The claims are made in Sunday’s Independent newspaper following recent speculation over the 19-year-old’s contract.

Sterling, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last 12 months with both club and country, has two and a half years left on his current deal. He currently earns £30,000 a week (via numerous reports over the last month) but The Independent claim that figure is £43,000 per week – perhaps mixing up the substantial bonuses which Sterling has included in his current deal.

£125,000 per week seems like a hefty pay rise and amount to be paying such a young player. Whether this report has much credibility is yet to be seen.

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has, according to a report on Sunday, rejected Liverpool’s request of a trial to prove his fitness ahead of a proposed free transfer move.

The Spanish shot stopper has been sidelined with an ACL injury since March, with his contract at Barcelona having expired over the summer, making him available to sign for a new club outside of the transfer window.

Liverpool have been linked with the 32-year-old for some time, however, according to The Sunday People, he’s now turned down Brendan Rodgers‘ request to spend four days at Melwood on trial to prove his fitness.

If true and a compromise cannot be found, the failure to land the experienced Spaniard would be a blow to Liverpool and Rodgers, who has been keen to acquire competition for Simon Mignolet.

Earlier reports this month had suggested Rodgers was confident of acquiring Valdes so perhaps a solution can be found.

Reports on Friday had claimed that talks had begun between the two parties, but that they would not be “easy” – something that is seemingly proving true so far.

Are Liverpool right to be cautious with Valdes following his injury, or should they sign him regardless? Let us know your thoughts below.

With Liverpool already suffering with a long list of injuries, news of injury to Lazar Markovic on international duty adds to the club’s misery.

Brendan Rodgers, look away now.

Liverpool’s growing injury list this season seems to show no sign of stopping, this time with Serbian winger Lazar Markovic facing a layoff after taking a knock on international duty on Saturday night.

The 20-year-old, £20 million summer signing started for Serbia in their European Championships 2016 Qualifier against Armenia.

Markovic started in the No. 10 role, behind Lazio striker Filip Djordjevic, but struggled to impose himself on the early proceedings in the tie.

Russian sports writer Artur Petrosyan gave his immediate verdict on the injury, suggesting Markovic could be facing a layoff of two to three weeks.

After having reportedly lost Dejan Lovren to injury already this international break, and after expressing his fury at the treatment of Daniel Sturridge by England manager Roy Hodgson during the last European jaunt, Rodgers will be disappointed at the nature of Markovic’s injury.

Emre Can and Joe Allen joined Sturridge on the treatment bench after the last international break, and Liverpool’s form has suffered massively since.

The loss of Markovic may not be considered such a blow, at this stage, with the youngster currently struggling to reach form in a Reds shirt.

The 20-year-old has made six appearances so far for the club since his move, without a single goal or assist.

Furthermore, Markovic has been criticized for his lack of defensive contribution, with a particularly limp display in the recent 1-1 Merseyside Derby draw standing out.

Nevertheless, Rodgers will be disappointed to lose an important player due to matters out of his hands.

Fingers remain cripplingly crossed on Merseyside this international break.

How damaging will Lazar Markovic’s injury be to Liverpool’s fortunes in the coming weeks? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
