Football journalists in England and across the world have come into offices with a stinking hangover this morning, with one eye on Christmas and the other looking around the room for writing inspiration.

Newspapers

So put the cocktail of media offices that are counting down the hours until the door slams for Christmas Day, and a slow news day together and you get something far worse than a Jagerbomb—the dregs of the transfer Rumour Mill.

As this article is already descending into some sort of chaotic pantomime, quite apt for this time of the year, let’s go through a few of the rumours surrounding Liverpool this morning.

CARDIFF, WALES - SATURDAY, MAY 13th, 2006: Liverpool's Xabi Alonso celebrates winning the FA Cup after a penalties victory over West Ham United during the FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Daily Star‘s Jack Wilson found some quotes from Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti about Xabi Alonso and whether the Spanish international will get a new contract at the Bernabeu next summer, or not.

He writes, starting with big capital letters to emphasise that THIS IS A REPORT IN A NEWSPAPER:

MANCHESTER UNITED, Chelsea and Liverpool could all fight for Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti hinted he may be set for the exit door.

ITV also carry the the story, putting two and two together and coming up with a good transfer rumours story about the former Liverpool midfielder.

As for those quotes from Ancelotti. Ahem…

The club has no further information regarding his [Alonso's] renewal.

But if he signs or not, he is our player until the summer of 2014 and if he is available, he will play.

We have other important players. We have played half of the season without him and the results have been good.

Right then, let’s pluck another transfer story out of the air.

The Liverpool Echo had difficulty finding stories too in their transfer rumour round-up. In fairness, they wrote in big bold letters:

* Please remember, these are internet rumours, gathered in one place for your convenience, not Liverpool Echo stories.

Loving the emphasising in the press today.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's captain Luis Suarez in action against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

So on to Luis Suarez . According to an “exclusive” by the notoriously reliable/unreliable (you pick, it’s not rocket science) Goal.com, Suarez’s release clause in his new contract consists of a figure around the £60m-£70million mark.

They also say the release clause can only be triggered by a non-English club, which has very much spoilt Arsene Wenger’s plans for Christmas.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, May 8, 2012: Liverpool's Stewart Downing in action against Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand during the final home Premiership match of the season at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

What else? Well Caught Offside say Liverpool are “preparing a bid” for outcast Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand. I do hope there’s actually some method to “preparing a bid”, or at least good practice, like preparing the turkey for stuffing.

And there’s something about Barcelona’s Pedro and a tedious link to Liverpool and Arsenal in the Daily Express , but ignore it.

That’s about it. Have a wonderful Christmas eve, eve, and Santa, wherever you are, I’ll swap you a 0-0 tonight between Arsenal and Chelsea for a glass of sherry tomorrow night.

Scraping the festive Rumour Mill: Xabi Alonso to Liverpool; Suarez’s £70m clause; Barca’s Pedro

This is the final part of my look at the Liverpool academy. Thanks to all those that took time to read it and those that left a comment. I understand not everyone will agree with my views. But like the boot room of old. Discussion is always good.

Liverpool FC Youth Academy: Groundhog Day (Part 2)

Liverpool FC Youth Academy: Groundhog Day (Part 1)

lfcacademyday_feb2013

Is the U21 league holding back players?

As it stands the step up from the U21s to the first team is too big. The NextGen was a very good competition, and while UEFA have introduced their own U19 Champions League, the problem is that it’s only for clubs that qualify for the Champions League. This is not only excluding Liverpool but also other top academies in England and Europe.

While I feel the U21 system has its merits I feel it would be better served if the established Primer League clubs played each other more often. I would like to see Liverpool play Manchester United and City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton, Villa etc at least 2 times a season if not 3 or 4. I would also like a strong European U21 competition.

I would like to see the U18 league developed in a similar manner again with a European competition. It’s clear that the games against the bigger teams matter more and are played at a higher intensity.

We can’t let a situation like last year develop again where Liverpool didn’t have any game against Everton at U21 level and no games with Manchester United and Everton at U18 level.

Are we using the loan system correctly?

It’s clear the loan system is not working for Liverpool. When Barcelona loaned Gerard Deulofeu this season, clubs queued up. Barcelona could have sent him to a club that was playing in Europe but they wanted to send him to a club where he would play. They set up an arrangement with Everton that the more he played the less Everton would have to pay. Liverpool needs to adopt a similar approach in order to ensure there players get game time.

What do we need to do to help improve our Academy and developing youth players in general?

When Rafa Benitez suggested having B Teams in the lower divisions it was laughed at. However it’s clear from Spain that players develop better playing with their colleagues in a competitive environment.

I feel a link could be set up between the top Premier League clubs and a club in League One or League Two. Liverpool could have a link with Tranmere Rovers or Accrington Stanley. Liverpool would provide free coaches to the clubs. The club would not have to pay wages but would have to play a certain number of Liverpool players per game. If a player wasn’t working they could choose another from the academy.

If Liverpool decides to let a player go, the affiliate would be given first option on signing them. If the affiliate developed the player and then decided to sell the players then all transfer fees should be split 50/50. Also there could be rewards to the club for example if someone like Jordan Lussey spent a season on loan at Tranmere and played 30 games or more and the club decides to sell him to Wigan for £3 million then Tranmere would get 15%.

However if Lussey made it at Liverpool after 10 first team games Tranmere would get £50,000 and after 50 games they would get £200,000, if the player makes 5 International appearances they get another £250,000, they would get another £250,000 after 5 Champions League, so the clubs would be paid for there part in helping developing the player.

If Tranmere promoted to the Championship then the link is stopped and a new one formed with another club. If this proved to be a success we should look at setting up a similar arrangement with a European team.

Should the first team manager have control of the academy?

I think there needs to be a separation between the first team and the academy as every time we employ a new manager they will revamp the academy for their own short term needs.

I think the first team manger should have a say on certain things but the clubs philosophies would not be changed. I would hope that we wouldn’t ever employ someone whose football ideology was as different to Liverpool’s as this could set the academy back years if they had control of the academy also.

Are we on the right track or do we need a new blue print?

I feel we are on the right track but if we aspire to having one of the best academies in Europe we still have a bit to go. Firstly we need to become the best academy in the North West and then in England. For years we had a world class academy infrastructure that was not producing top flight players.

It’s clear we need to recruit the best players locally. Recent evidence would also support the idea of recruiting the best talents from domestic academies more than international ones. Maybe a quota supporting 3 to 1 bias toward domestic recruitment so we get players like Raheem Sterling, Jordan Ibe and Jerome Sinclair and supplement that with an exceptional non-domestic talent like Suso.

It is clear we need to improve more technically. I feel more hours of specific coaching will help this. The Clubs, the FA and the Premier League need to get together and devise a programme that works with junior clubs and school teams so kids are technically proficient at a younger age.

If we could get academy players to a very high level of technical ability then you could use the loan system when they are 19 or 20. They should be sent to the affiliate club where they would play in matches that matter in front of crowds. The following year they could be sent to a European affiliate.

I think the U18 and U21 leagues need uniformity and the kids need to play as many highly competitive games as possible, there needs to more emphasis on European competition for both the U18 and U21s. The big clubs should get together to ensure this happens.

I feel we should have a role for ex-players whether they played for our first team or our academy. It’s great to see the like of Robbie Fowler, Rob Jones and Steve McManaman back at the club but it’s also brilliant to have someone like Richie Partridge at the club.

I firmly believe we are on the right roads but we still have a long way to go to get to the levels of the likes of Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon where we produce world class players on a regular basis.

Liverpool look to continue their impressive free-scoring run of form which could see them top the Premier League over Christmas with a Boxing Day visit to Manchester City, live on BT Sport.

Thursday, 26th December 2013; 5.30pm kick-off

Premier League

City of Manchester Stadium

Liverpool are on a roll after high-scoring victories against Norwich City, West Ham, Tottenham and Cardiff, but finish the year with two difficult trips to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Boxing Day’s mouthwatering clash at the City of Manchester Stadium is live on BT Sport and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to claim a victory to ensure Liverpool go into Sunday’s game at Chelsea as league leaders.

The opposition

Manchester City are also in good form though with recent wins over both Bayern Munich and Arsenal. City have won all eight Premier League games at home so far this season.

They return to Manchester off the back of a 4-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

However, Manuel Pellegrini’s side are without leading scorer Sergio Aguero who could be out until the end of January with a leg muscle problem.

In last year’s fixture, Liverpool held Man City to a 2-2 draw at the City of Manchester Stadium. Having turned the game around from a 1-0 deficit thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge, Aguero struck late to salvage a point for the home side.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Wednesday, November 28, 2012: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling in action against Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Team news

This time round, Liverpool have no Gerrard or Sturridge, but Luis Suarez is in the form of his life, having scored 19 goals in his opening 12 games of the campaign.

Jon Flanagan should continue at left-back, and Mamadou Sakho‘s increasingly confident performances surely put him ahead of Daniel Agger in central defence for this post-Christmas footballing feast.

Possible Liverpool XI vs Manchester City 26.12.2013 (rough formation)

- Lucas Leiva KPLM

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen says the club’s home form this season is turning Anfield into a fortress once again.

The Reds’ 3-1 victory over Cardiff City on Saturday was their eighth win at home this season, having only dropped points to Southampton back in September.

It was also a sixth straight home win for Brendan Rodgers‘ men and Allen, who was one of Liverpool’s star performers against the Bluebirds, says confidence amongst the players is now sky high.

“That’s the idea – every team wants their home ground to be like that,” he told the club’s official website. “To have Anfield almost like a fortress, like it used to be, is our aim and we feel we’re getting there now.

“We always knew a victory today would be great to build momentum and confidence going into what we know are two tough away games. Job done today and now we can go into those games looking forward to picking up good results.

“Not just this season but at the back end of last season as well, we really started gaining that confidence and belief in what we’re trying to do and the way we’re trying to play. We’re reaping the rewards of that this season.”

Liverpool are now top of the Premier League table, and will stay top for Christmas if Arsenal fail to beat Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.

The Reds were further boosted by the news this week that Luis Suarez has signed a new long-term deal to remain at the club. It was an announcement that delighted the players, according to Welsh international Allen.

He added, “It’s an incredible boost for us. We all know he’s a world-class player, he has shown that time and time again this season.

“It’s amazing for us to have him in the team. He showed again today how vital it is we tied him down to that long-term deal.

“One of the first things top players look for is the players they would be joining if they were to join a club like this.

“It will be a fantastic pull, and with the performances we’re picking up. Hopefully if we can maintain that until the very end of the season, it will be an exciting summer.”
