Liverpool assistant manager Colin Pascoe believes Mario Balotelli fully deserved his first Premier League goal which crucially gave them victory over top-four rivals Tottenham.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, February 10, 2015: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli scores the third goal againstTottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The sides were locked at 2-2 with seven minutes remaining when the Italy international converted Adam Lallana’s cross. Balotelli had been left out of the previous three squads after a woeful substitute performance at Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-final but Pascoe said the goal was just what he needed.

“Mario always works hard in training and recently he has been ill and he has had some knocks on his foot where he couldn’t get his boot on,” said the Welshman, standing in for Brendan Rodgers who had left to board a flight to Europe to watch a match tomorrow.

“It is testament to himself, he kept going and got his reward.”

Considering he had waited all season for the goal, Balotelli did not look particularly pleased with his effort. There was no celebration and straight after the final whistle he headed off down the tunnel without shaking hands with team-mates or opponents, or acknowledging the fans who still back him despite his disappointing campaign.

“He is immensely happy. To get a winner at Anfield, I am sure he is happy. Again, with Mario he knew he would have a part to play and he certainly did,” added Pascoe.

The victory was vital to Liverpool’s Champions League ambitions as it moved them within three points of third-placed Southampton, who have a match in hand, and Arsenal in fourth.

“We needed to win tonight to get closer to the top,” said Pascoe. “We always thought that. Our next (league) game is Southampton and we will look at that to get three points and keep closing the gap.”

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, February 10, 2015: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic celebrates scoring the first goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Lazar Markovic had given Liverpool an early lead, which was cancelled out by Harry Kane’s 23rd of the season. Daniel Sturridge, on his first start for five months, won the penalty for Steven Gerrard to equal Robbie Fowler‘s club total of 183 but that was cancelled out by Mousa Dembele’s close-range effort, only for Balotelli to have the final say.

“I think that it was a great game,” said Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino. “I am disappointed and at the same time proud of the effort of our players because it was great but in football you have to be lucky to get the points and today I think we were unlucky.

“I think maybe we gave the opportunity to Liverpool in the first half more than the second.

“We gave many balls away – easy balls to play – and Liverpool got the ball and played on the counter-attack.

“That was a little bit disappointing but I think the performance was good and we played to win the game. “I think it is a shame. We deserved a little bit more.”

Liverpool look to “keep closing the gap” to top four – Pascoe

Jordan Henderson feels Liverpool are more than a match for any team in the Barclays Premier League after they continued their excellent recent run with a 3-2 win over Tottenham.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 24, 2015: Liverpool's Jordan Henderson in action against Bolton Wanderers during the FA Cup 4th Round match at Anfield. (Pic by Lindsey Parnaby/Propaganda)

The Reds are now firmly in the hunt for a to-four place after extending their unbeaten streak in the league to nine matches. They now lie just three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and Henderson believes they are capable of beating anyone put in front of them.

“We always feel we can beat anyone if we keep playing the way we have been,” he said on BT Sport 1. “We’ve got some fantastic players here so we’ve just got to keep working hard on the training field and getting results like that.

“We’ve got a little momentum, we’ve been playing some great stuff and I thought we showed great character tonight.”

It looked set to be a frustrating night for the Merseysiders as Spurs twice fought back from a goal down. Lazar Markovic’s opener was cancelled out by the in-form Harry Kane, while Spurs levelled again, after Steven Gerrard had put Liverpool back in front from the penalty spot, through Mousa Dembele.

But forgotten man Mario Balotelli swooped to stab home seven minutes from time for his first league goal since his £16million move from AC Milan last summer. It was a muted celebration from the Italian, although Henderson thinks his team-mate will be delighted with his contribution.

“I’m sure he’ll be smiling in the dressing room. When he came on, he worked hard and got the goal and the three points for the team,” he added.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was understandably frustrated his side were on the losing side of an entertaining, nip-and-tuck encounter. But the Argentinian is keen to move on quickly from the setback with his side also in the hunt for a top-four finish.

“(I’m) disappointed with the result because I think it was a game (where) we deserved one point,” he said. “I think it was a great game, we played well to try and win the three points, but this is football and we’re disappointed with the result.

“But we need to accept that football is like this, we played for the three points. I’m proud for the efforts but we need to look forward.”

In a night full of positives as Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield, Jack Lusby highlights the role Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe played.

Liverpool took another step closer to the Premier League’s top four on Tuesday night, as Brendan Rodgers saw his side vanquish rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-2 win at Anfield.

Goals from Lazar Markovic, Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli won it for the Reds, with Harry Kane and Moussa Dembele both equalising along the way in a frenetic tete-a-tete.

Liverpool’s form is glistening at this stage, and momentum can only build with this victory.

With many positives to take from this Liverpool win, in which Rodgers’ side established their top-four credentials and seriously damaged the challenge of Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Markovic and Jordon Ibe shone as two of the Reds’ key men.

The Wing-Back Role and Spurs’ Weakness

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, February 10, 2015: Liverpool's Jordon Ibe in action against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

As Spurs’ teamsheet rolled out an hour before kick-off, a noticeable weak spot emerged immediately after Hugo Lloris’ name—Pochettino’s defence looked makeshift and susceptible to Liverpool’s direct play even on paper.

Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose—hardly Cafu, Jaap Stam, Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini, are they?

As Walker made an embarrassing foul throw and Rose gave away Liverpool’s penalty with a trip on Daniel Sturridge, the sheer weakness of Spurs’ defensive flanks became clear to see.

If Rodgers was to exploit any area, it should be Spurs’ full-backs.

This is where the wing-back role comes into its own in Rodgers’ system, and Ibe was the chosen one at Anfield on Tuesday night.

In Rodgers’ 3-4-2-1, the wing-back is tasked primarily with supporting any Liverpool attacks, with their average position much higher up the pitch than a traditional full-back or even a traditional wide midfielder—although, of course, a large portion of defensive work is required too.

Ibe was tasked with this role and terrorised Rose throughout, with much help from Markovic.

Markovic and Ibe

After Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, much of the debate was on Ibe’s exemplary performance in the right wing-back role, with Markovic looking on from the substitutes’ bench after taking a knock in the Reds’ previous game.

Before Tuesday’s clash, whether Ibe or Markovic would take up this role on the right flank was a considerable talking point, but the pair ended up both playing due to injury to Raheem Sterling.

If they were to be considered positional rivals before this win, Markovic and Ibe now look to be an exceptional partnership in the making.

PRESTON, ENGLAND - Saturday, July 19, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Ibe in action against Preston North End during a preseason friendly match at Deepdale Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Targeting Spurs’ weak left side with Rose and the often absent Vertonghen, Ibe and Markovic dovetailed to near perfection.

As mentioned, Ibe’s role is typically to provide width and cover on the flank, and the 19-year-old drove towards the Spurs byline with regularity.

Lone striker Sturridge thrives on this level of support, with his intelligent movement often seeing him head to the near post or the edge of the six-yard box, as with his strong attempt on 13 minutes, after Ibe’s cutback sat up nicely on the deflection.

The newcomer mixed up his play throughout however, as he did against Everton, and much of his best work came when drifting inside to run at the Spurs defence.

This is where Markovic’s understanding came into play.

When Ibe came inside, Markovic would switch to a wide role; when Ibe cut down the byline, Markovic duly supported Sturridge, serving as what was effectively a shadow striker.

In their first outing together Markovic and Ibe looked to be a devastating partnership and much of this was due to the returning presence of Sturridge.

Daniel Sturridge

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, February 10, 2015: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge in action against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

On his first start for the side in five months, Sturridge was understandably rusty in areas, but the little-by-little approach from Rodgers and the Liverpool medical team in managing the striker’s return seems to have aided his confidence and overall sharpness.

Operating in what will likely be his long-term role for Liverpool as a lone striker, Sturridge performed with intelligence and finesse.

With Markovic and Ibe troubling Vertonghen and, in particular, Rose on Liverpool’s right flank, Sturridge was able exercise his natural movement in plenty of space.

Sturridge served as a moving target for the pair: as a sounding board for Markovic’s intricate attacking play, as the aim of Ibe’s cutbacks or as the finisher of moves.

What was most impressive with Sturridge’s play, and is an area that Liverpool have been missing on the whole during his absence—although Sterling did produce some of this in his time at centre-forward—was the way in which the striker dropped deep to instigate attacks.

Sturridge, a comfortable creative player, found space for the restricted Philippe Coutinho to pass into, and built moves from there.

Markovic in particular benefited from this, with his steamrolling runs overlapping the deep-lying Sturridge—the 20-year-old’s opening goal is the perfect example of this style, as Markovic offered an outlet on the charge.

Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe started the season as peripheral figures under Brendan Rodgers but, after Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, are threatening to form a devastating long-term partnership on the Reds’ right flank.

Can Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe continue their promising partnership for Liverpool? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool defeated Tottenham 3-2 on a topsy-turvy evening at Anfield. We round-up the best reaction from social media both during and after the game.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, February 10, 2015: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli [hidden] celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur with team-mates during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

This was the kind of match the Reds just never used to win. Having been pegged back twice by Mauricio Pochettino’s side, if anything a winning goal from the visitors looked more likely.

But Mario Balotelli, of all people, popped up with a late effort to earn his side a massive three points; his first Premier League goal for Liverpool.

It was a fascinating match from start to finish, in which both sides were going all out for three points, and it highlighted both the strengths and flaws in either team.

Lazar Markovic’s early goal was cancelled out by the in-form Harry Kane, while Steven Gerrard‘s penalty was soon responded to by Moussa Dembele close-range finish.

There were good and bad performers for the Reds. Philippe Coutinho had a huge off-night by his standards, but Jordon Ibe and Emre Can were once again outstanding.

The win leaves Liverpool right in the mix for a top-four finish; just one point behind Spurs, two adrift of Manchester United and three behind Arsenal and Southampton.

Here is how fans, journalists and ex-players reacted to the game on social media:

‘Walter Sobchak’ on the forum:

Absolutely brilliant result! I’m still moaning over the draw against the bitters, but a loss or a draw today would have been devastating to our chances of top 4.

The pitch at Anfield looks horrible and slows down our play. Needs to be sorted in the summer. Happy for Mario – he needed that goal, and so did the team! Ibe is going to be massive for us. Tie him and Sterling down with sneaky-agent-proof contracts ASAP.

‘Hope in your heart’ on the forum:

Really great win against a side with utter self-confidence and on a great run, probably one of the current top three sides in the league.

It was such hard stuff with Tottenham dominating so much in midfield, but the belief and the fighting spirit was there, especially once Gerrard went out. Time to rejoice before the next crunch game at Southampton!

Let us know your thoughts on the game in the comments below.

Liverpool won 3-2 against Tottenham in a pulsating clash at Anfield on Tuesday evening, enhancing the Reds’ Premier League top-four aspirations in the process.

Liverpool 3-2 Tottenham

Premier League – Anfield – Tuesday, 10th February 2015

Goals: Markovic (15), Gerrard pen (52), Balotelli (83); Kane (26), Dembele (61)

Pre-match

Brendan Rodgers was forced into making two changes from Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Raheem Sterling missed out with a foot injury and was replaced by Lazar Markovic, while Daniel Sturridge made his first Liverpool start since August, in place of the injured Lucas Leiva.

Steven Gerrard started in a deeper midfield role than of late, despite looking tired against the Toffees, while Jordon Ibe kept his place after a very impressive showing at right wing-back.

Victory was much-needed for the Reds, in order to keep their top-four aspirations alive, and they faced an unchanged Spurs team fresh off the back of a memorable win against north London rivals Arsenal.

First-half

Sturridge had the first chance of the game, racing through on goal before scuffing his right-footed shot. Gerrard then curled a free-kick just over Hugo Lloris’ crossbar.

Markovic volleyed a close-range effort well over after 11 minutes, as Liverpool dominated the early stages of the game. Lloris made a superb save to deny Sturridge soon after, and Joe Mason tested Simon Mignolet at the other end.

In the 15th minute the Reds were ahead. Markovic ran at the Spurs defence, and his left-footed shot squeezed a little tamely past Lloris’ dive.

After 25 minutes it was 1-1, however, and it was that man Harry Kane who scored. Erik Lamela found the 21-year-old inside the area, and he finished clinically past Simon Mignolet. It all seemed a little too easy though.

The game continued to ebb and flow, and Sturridge hit the post with an audacious back-heel, but at half-time it was 1-1. It had been an unbelievably open contest.

Second-half

Seven minutes after half-time Liverpool were correctly awarded a penalty, after Sturridge was fouled by Danny Rose. Gerrard dispatched the spot-kick, and Rodgers’ men were back ahead.

Mignolet made a sublime save to keep out Erik Lamela’s long-range shot, as the visitors continued to look very threatening in attack. Lucas was a huge loss in the middle of the park.

It was 2-2 soon after, however, as Moussa Dembele converted Kane’s cross. The latter looked offside though, and Spurs had also been awarded a very soft free-kick in the lead-up to the goal.

Dejan Lovren replaced Gerrard midway through the second-half, with Emre Can moved further up the pitch, while Alberto Moreno forced Lloris into a smart save. Could the Reds find a late winner?

With seven minutes remaining, something remarkable happened; Mario Balotelli scored. The Italian, on as a substitute, poked home fellow sub Adam Lallana’s cross from six yards out, amid scenes of great joy inside Anfield. It was his first Premier League goal for Liverpool.

The Reds held on in a nervy finale, earning a vital win over their Champions League rivals in the process.

KOMEN Anda utk perlawanan LIVTOT

Positif dan Negatif..

LIVERPOOL masih menjadi satu satunya pasukan yg belum kalah pada 2015.

Positif : 3 Points from tight and tough game. And mario score first PL goal in Liverpool shirt and also the matchwinner.

Super subs made by Rodgers. More effective dari subtitution spurs.

Negatif: mignolet finally dibolosi selepas 4 game Clean sheet.
