Steven Gerrard scored twice to send Liverpool through to the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-1 win over a spirited AFC Wimbledon.
Days after announcing he was leaving in the summer after a 17-year professional career at the club, Liverpool captain Gerrard put the Reds ahead after 12 minutes with a fine header.
But Adebayo Akinfenwa equalised nine minutes before half-time after the ball dropped to the feet of the giant striker three yards from goal.
League Two Wimbledon had a flurry of chances either side of half-time, but it was Gerrard again who gave Liverpool the lead, firing home a trademark free-kick from the edge of the box.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers fielded a fairly strong side, starting the likes of Gerrard, Simon Mignolet, Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho, and both sides knew they would be meeting Bolton Wanderers in a home tie in the fourth round before kick-off.
The game lived up to the pre-match hype having evoked memories of Wimbledon’s 1-0 FA Cup final win over Liverpool in 1988.
And Liverpool’s one clear-cut chance in the first half resulted in a goal, and it was the skipper who netted.
Javi Manquillo’s right-wing cross was headed home by Gerrard from 12 yards out after a move involving Lambert, but the hosts reduced the Premier League side’s chances for the rest of the opening 45 minutes.
Wimbledon went close to an equaliser midway through the first half after a melee in the area resulted in Sean Rigg’s volleyed effort being tipped over the bar by Mignolet.
Minutes later the ball fell to top scorer Matt Tubbs inside the area after Manquillo let the ball drop, but the striker knocked the ball just wide with just Mignolet to beat from a slight angle.
The League Two side levelled on 36 minutes through Akinfenwa, sliding home from three yards after Barry Fuller had hit the bar from a George Francomb corner.
Question marks were asked again of Belgian goalkeeper Mignolet, who failed in his attempt to clear the original ball into the box under pressure from Wimbledon players.
Adam Barrett saw a header cleared off the line by Gerrard in the second half, before Coutinho shot wide from an angle when passing to his captain looked the better option.
But when Coutinho was brought down on the edge of the area by Fuller, Gerrard stepped up for his ninth goal of the season, curling a perfect free-kick past James Shea.
A minute after the goal, the hosts went down the other end through Dannie Bulman, but his header went just over Mignolet’s goal.
The second half saw a flurry of chances fall to Liverpool; first Lambert’s side-footed effort was saved by the leg of Shea, before Coutinho brought another save from the Wimbledon stopper when he should have scored.
With six minutes remaining, Adebayo Azeez saw a powerful effort blocked well by defender Martin Skrtel in the Liverpool box, before Liverpool broke from the resulting corner, only for Lazar Markovic to see his effort saved fantastically by Shea again.
Azeez again looked to get on the end of a knock down in stoppage time from six yards out, only for Mignolet to save with his feet, before Gerrard’s effort at the far post went through Shea’s legs but couldn’t beat Jake Goodman on the line.

Brendan Rodgers believes an FA Cup title birthday present would prove "a wonderful send-off" for AFC Wimbledon match-winner Steven Gerrard.
Video: YouTube user Shazzy Mazzy22
Gerrard's brace rescued Liverpool from a potentially sticky situation, securing a 2-1 third-round victory at Kingsmeadow on Monday night.
The 34-year-old proved just what Liverpool will miss next season in his first game since confirming he will leave his boyhood club in the summer.
Liverpool boss Rodgers hailed Gerrard's "world-class ability" and backed the Reds to chase FA Cup glory, with the May 30 final the day the Anfield skipper turns 35.
"Well the FA Cup final is on his birthday, so there would be no better way for us to mark it, that would be a wonderful send-off for him," said Rodgers.
"Okay he might be getting a bit older but he'll always have that world-class ability and world-class talent.
"There are a lot of games to play in between, but we've targeted a cup victory this season, so we're still very much in line for that moving into the second part of the season.
"The team's still very focused and we played some really good football tonight on a really good pitch.
"So the idea is to get a cup run, and if we can do it that would be really special of course."
'The Beast' Adebayo Akinfenwa bludgeoned Wimbledon level after Gerrard had headed Liverpool into an early lead.
Gerrard then stepped up to complete a trademark salvage job by firing home an accurate free-kick strike as Liverpool stubbed out any chance of an upset.
The former England captain dragged his home town club out of the mire as he has so many times before, bringing into sharp focus what Liverpool will be without when he moves to America next term.
Rodgers however refused to accept that the more Gerrard continues to underpin Liverpool triumphs, the more the pressure grows to find the club's future talisman.
"We play as a team, we win as a team and we lose as a team," said Rodgers.
"It's very much a collective.
"I've never asked anyone to do any more than anyone else.
"You have of course your quality players, I've always said nothing's changed that.
"But of course it's up to us as a club, we need to ensure we keep working and producing top-class players.
"Steven was outstanding in the game, a brilliant individual performance from him and a real catalyst for us.
"If he was a real selfish player he might have stayed on the ball and got himself a hat-trick as well, but he was still trying to create opportunities for other players."
Rodgers conceded England midfielder Adam Lallana could now miss a month with the thigh injury suffered in Liverpool's 4-1 victory over Swansea.
"More or less, it might be a wee bit shorter than that," said Rodgers of Lallana's injury.
"It's a slight strain that he has, so no real timeline on it, but hopefully it won't be as long as that."

Reports on Monday night claim Liverpool’s Spanish midfielder Suso has agreed a deal to join AC Milan when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 21-year-old made his return from injury on Monday, playing 45 minutes for the under-21s but could even leave the club this month.
Spanish newspaper Marca broke the news of a pre-contract agreement having been reached.
While Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio claims Milan will try to make the deal happen this month.
Both reports suggest a four-year contract with the Rossoneri for Suso.
Suso has made 21 appearances for the club so far, the majority of which arrived in the early months of Brendan Rodgers‘ first season at the club. He spent last season on loan to La Liga side Almeria.
Liverpool signed him from Cadiz as a youngster in 2010.

Liverpool edged past AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup third round on Monday evening, and we assess each Reds player on the night.
SIMON MIGNOLET (out of 10)- 5
Despite making a couple of decent saves, Mignolet once again had a night to forget. His woeful attempt to clear a corner led to Wimbledon’s equaliser, and there were a couple of other shaky moments too.
Vote Mignolet as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
EMRE CAN- 6
The 20-year-old didn’t always look totally assured at the back, but all in all he had a solid evening. He continues to look an exciting talent and this is a key learning curve for him.
Vote Can as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
MARTIN SKRTEL- 6.5
The Slovakian has been much-maligned at times this season, but he had a pretty good evening against a very physical Ade Akinfenwa. He was more dominant aerially than of late, although did miss one header which almost proved key in the first half.
Vote Skrtel as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
The Frenchman was pretty impeccable all evening long, using the ball excellently, reading the game well and winning plenty in the air. The France international is becoming a key player for Liverpool and is quite clearly the club’s best defender.
Vote Sakho as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
JAVIER MANQUILLO- 6
The young Spaniard showed plenty of endeavour, especially as he was struggling with an ankle injury throughout. He produced a good cross for Gerrard’s opener, but his decision making was poor at times.
Vote Manquillo as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
LUCAS LEIVA- 6.5
The 27-year-old kept it simple all evening, and provided a good defensive shield in front of the defence. He lost the ball a few times, but was also a bit more expansive with his passing.
Vote Leiva as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
The soon-to-be Reds captain had an impressive evening, showing wonderful energy and using the ball intelligently from start to finish. He has to be starting games in the middle of the park.
Vote Henderson as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
LAZAR MARKOVIC- 7
Markovic had a good game, showing great pace and drive on a number of occasions. He almost scored in the first-half, but just missed the target, and should have made it 3-1 late on. Promising though and certainly growing into life at Liverpool.
Vote Markovic as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
STEVEN GERRARD- 7.5
It just had to be Gerrard who was the star man, didn’t it? The skipper was the difference between the two sides, and showed just how influential he can still be. He made errors in possession, but his two goals were brilliantly taken – that’s four goals in two games for the captain!
Vote Gerrard as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 6.5
The 22-year-old was guilty of trying to do too much at times, but he was a constant threat and oozed quality on the ball. The Brazilian will play better this season, but he did pretty well.
Vote Coutinho as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
RICKIE LAMBERT- 4.5
The 32-year-old was extremely poor throughout, despite playing a part in Gerrard’s first goal. He offered no movement, his touch was woeful and he looked overweight. Really poor display, and it was obvious he hadn’t played much of late.
Vote Lambert as your Man of the Match on Twitter:
Substitutes
JOSE ENRIQUE (on for Javier Manquillo 71)- 5.5
The Spaniard put one shocking cross into the crowd, but did offer some attacking thrust when he came on.
MARIO BALOTELLI (on for Lambert 79)- 6
The 24-year-old did far more in 11 minutes than Lambert did in 79, showing more pace and goal threat. He wasn’t on long enough to make a proper impact though.
KOLO TOURE (on for Markovic 87)- n/a
Late cameo only.

After watching his side edge past Wimbledon 2-1 on Monday night, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers paid tribute to Steven Gerrard, saying: "I've always said he's a world class player, maybe getting older and maybe at times the legs fatigue a wee bit, but he's absolute top draw.
Video: YouTube user Mr Beanyman
Gerrard scored a goal in either half to set up an FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Bolton Wanderers at Anfield later this month.
"He's got that real sprinkling of quality that this team needs. His two goals tonight were fantastic."
Rodgers was relieved his side managed to avoid a potential banana skin, admitting their performance levels dipped as the first half wore on before improving after half-time.
"It was a very tough game, congratulations to them – I think any coach or manager will tell you, you come to a stadium like this here and that type of game is very, very difficult," he said.
"I thought we started the game well, how we would want to, but then we lost our shape within the game and we presented them with chances by giving the ball away.
"We adapted at half-time and in the second half we could have had a few more chances but we still had to defend right the way through to the end.
"I've got to give a bit of testament to my players. We showed the character to come through and get the second goal and really – should have had two or three more."
