Dejan Lovren believes there is no limit to what this Liverpool side can achieve, thanks to the abundance of young, exciting talents within the ranks.

Much was expected of Brendan Rodgers‘ men this season, although they initially struggled to adapt to life without star turn Luis Suarez. Since December, though, the Reds have improved apace and on Sunday moved within two points of the top-four, thanks to a seventh win during a 10-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling secured what could prove a vital 2-0 victory against Southampton – the kind of display which highlighted to Lovren the young squad’s potential.

“We have massive, massive talent and we can just go higher and higher because everyone is so young,” the 25-year-old defender said. “With the talent and young (players), I think we can achieve whatever we want, whatever we imagine.

“We just need to work hard and give our best on the pitch.”

The average age of Liverpool’s line-up at St Mary’s was 23.4 years – the youngest in this Premier League this season, according to Transfermarkt.

From 19-year-old Jordan Ibe to Martin Skrtel, the only starter in their thirties, it was a solid team display in difficult conditions at Southampton as wind and rain battered the pitch.

Lovren, like Adam Lallana, also had to handle the attention of the St Mary’s crowd, who let them know in no uncertain terms their dissatisfaction at their summer exits.

“It was an amazing win,” Lovren told LFCTV. “It was a tough game for us and we knew when we arrived here that it would be difficult for us.

“It’s a massive three points for us, now we’re a step closer to the top so we need to continue like this. I think we did a great job.

“Of course, it was a special moment to play against my ex-team – especially after the win, I’m more happy.”

The victory was not without controversy, though, as referee Kevin Friend made a string of poor calls, with Filip Djuricic twice taken down in the box before Lovren handled late in the first half.

“I am not sure for all three (penalty claims),” Lovren said. “I know for mine when I touched the ball with the hand, I know it was too close. It was a deflection so I couldn’t react and I don’t think it was a penalty.

“For the first two, I am not sure – I didn’t see. I was a little bit far away. I think at the end I think the referee was doing a great job.”

The backroom sports science team, led by Ryland Morgans, has recently published a number of peer-reviewed articles that ultimately improves the Reds’ knowledge of the game, supporting the manager and the players. Research was conducted by all full-time fitness staff at the Club and consultants Professor Barry Drust and Dr James Morton.

The sport science team work very closely with Brendan Rodgers, the coaches and physiotherapists. The fitness and science staff monitor the physical condition of players, the physical aspects of training and preparation as well as providing Rodgers with information about where players are when recovering in relation to upcoming matches.

“Our role is to develop individual programmes for players, making sure they are conditioned to deal with the physical demands of the manager’s tactical strategy, which includes a high press when out of possession, and quick explosive transitions. We also monitor players during recovery periods between matches which is supported by a tailored nutritional strategy” said Ryland Morgans, Head of Fitness and Conditioning at Liverpool FC.

“We believe science underpins football and we aim to generate research that develops our knowledge of the game and our players’ responses to training and match-play”, he added.

A number of research articles have recently been published from within the department and are unrivalled in Europe. Most importantly, the scientific findings are used to support decisions made by Rodgers and his staff to help achieve on-pitch success.

The papers are currently being published in various peer-reviewed scientific journals around the world and will benefit those involved in the scientific rationale behind practice, as well as fans who are interested in the science that underpins football.

Successful short passing frequency of defenders differentiates between top and bottom four English Premier League teams

David Adams, Ryland Morgans, Joao Sacramento, Stuart Morgan, Morgan D Williams

Abstract

It is said that dominating ball possession during football matches is a feature of successful English Premier League (EPL) teams. Yet, supporting evidence is unclear.

This study aimed to identify which performance indicators, falling under the umbrella of possession, separates teams that finish at the top versus teams that finish at the bottom of the EPL.

We analysed a range of technical data for defending, midfield and attacking units from all EPL matches played in one season.

We discovered that successful short passes made by defenders was the biggest contributor to the final result of the game.

The second largest contributor was successful passes made in the opposition half by midfielders. The third variable that contributed was unsuccessful passes made by defenders in the opposition half.

Findings suggest that successful EPL teams make use of defenders to build-up play. Maintaining possession via short passes allows the attacking team to move the opponents around the pitch and wait for attacking opportunities to emerge.

Changes in physical performance variables in an English Championship League team across the competitive season: the effect of possession

Ryland Morgans, David Adams, Richard Mullen, and Morgan D Williams

Abstract

For this study we monitored and analysed changes in physical match performance of six players from a Championship league team over the course of a season. We also examined the effects of team possession.

Sprint and high intensity distances and the frequency of these efforts were greater in early-season, and were significantly reduced at mid-and-late-season. However, none of these variables were related to team possession.

Total distance covered by players was consistent throughout the season but it was found that players covered less distance when they were in possession of the ball – 29m less for every 1% increase in possession.

Therefore the physical demand on players was lower when the team was in possession of the ball, suggesting better quality teams are able to maintain possession for longer periods in a match which would mean they require less recovery time due to less sprinting and high intensity running.

Technical and physical performance over an English Championship League season

Ryland Morgans, David Adams, Richard Mullen, Chris McLellan and Morgan D Williams

Abstract

The English Championship League (ECL) has a demanding ten-month schedule exposing players to residual fatigue if they play the majority of matches, which could reduce physical and technical match performance towards the end of the season.

Over one season we studied 11 ECL players who played the majority of matches to see if differences in physical and technical performance occurred.

From the home matches analysed, only total distance covered was different, it was highest at mid-season (December) compared to two months later (February).

Team possession remained stable throughout the season and the relative total distance covered by the team was calculated to be less (72metres per minute) when the team were in possession.

In summary, maintaining possession during matches may reduce physical demands imposed on players and help preserve performance throughout the season.

A Comparison of Physical and Technical Match Performance of a Team Competing in the English Championship League and Then the English Premier League Following Promotion

Ryland Morgans, David Adams, Richard Mullen, Joao Sacramento, Chris McLellan, and Morgan Williams

Abstract

The changes in match demands when a team is promoted from the English Championship League (ECL) to the English Premier League (EPL) remain unknown. To date, estimates of between league differences are made using different teams.

This study explores differences in physical and technical performance of players who competed in the ECL and then the EPL following promotion.

Although total distance covered over the season was the only measure to significantly differ between the ECL and EPL, the 3% increase in total distance in the EPL was deemed practically non-significant.

In the EPL, players had an extra 57 ± 6 hours between matches, yet this had little effect on total, sprint and high intensity distances.

In summary, higher league standard may not require greater physical capacity and developing a tactical strategy to suit the ability of players that is sustainable across leagues is important.

High-intensity training and salivary immunoglobulin A responses in professional top-level soccer players: effect of training

Adam L Owen, Del P Wong, Gordon Dunlop, Carole Groussard, Wiem Kebsi, Alexandre Dellal, Ryland Morgans, Hassane Zouhal

Abstract

This study took saliva samples of 10 elite professional football players to monitor for salivary immunoglobulin A, which helps protect against upper respiratory tract infections, before and after training sessions.

Players took part in four training sessions with varying high and low intensity and durations. Training intensity was monitored as internal (through heart rate responses and RPE) and external (through GPS) loads.

Baseline and pre training salivary immunoglobulin A did not differ between the four training sessions both for high and low intensity.

Post-training salivary immunoglobulin A was not different between high intensity and low intensity sessions after the first three periods. However, at the fourth period, salivary immunoglobulin A concentration for the high intensity session was significantly lower than the low intensity session.

High intensity football training sessions might cause a significant decrease in salivary immunoglobulin A values during the post exercise window as compared with low intensity sessions. This study encourages coaches to monitor salivary immunoglobulin A in routine, particularly during high intensity training periods, to take precautions to avoid upper respiratory tract infection in highly trained football players.

An intensive winter fixture schedule induces a transient fall in salivary IgA in English Premier League soccer players

Ryland Morgans, Patrick Orme, Liam Anderson, Barry Drust and James P Morton

Abstract

We examined the effects of an intensive fixture schedule on salivary immunoglobulin A concentration in professional football players from the English Premier League. Saliva samples were taken from 21 males who participated in seven games over a 30-day period during December 2013 and January 2014 (games one to five occurred in a 15-day period).

Salivary immunoglobulin A decreased at two days post-game three, four and five compared with game one. When the normal fixture schedule resumed (i.e. one game per week), salivary immunoglobulin A returned towards baseline. So games six and seven values were not different from game one.

Data showed, for the first time, that a congested winter fixture schedule could cause concern in the lack of immunity for upper respiratory tract infections in professional football players.

Pre-match salivary IgA in soccer players from the 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign

Ryland Morgans, Adam Owen, Dominic Doran, Barry Drust and James P Morton

Abstract

We set out to monitor levels of salivary immunoglobulin A levels in international football players during the short-term training period that precedes international match play.

Saliva samples were taken from thirteen outfield footballers who participated in the training camps preceding seven games (five home and two away) of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Samples were obtained daily for four days before each game at match day (MD) minus 1 (MD-1), minus 2 (MD-2), minus 3 (MD-3) and minus 4 (MD-4).

Salivary immunoglobulin A showed a progressive decline during the 4-day training period such that MD-1 values were significantly lower than both MD-4 and MD-3.

The data collected shows that a short-term training camp in preparation for international competition can lower salivary immunoglobulin A, leaving world-class athletes susceptible to a lack of immunity Future studies should monitor salivary immunoglobulin A (as a practical and non-invasive measurement of immunity) alongside internal and external measures of training load in an attempt to strategically individualise training and nutritional strategies that may support optimal preparation for high-level competition.

An English championship league soccer team did not experience impaired physical match performance in second match after 75 hours of recovery

Ryland Morgans, David Adams, Richard Mullen, Chris McLellan and Morgan Williams

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the hormonal and neuromuscular responses and physical match performance in a second match after 75 hours of recovery in English Championship League (ECL) football players during a mid-season weekly period.

Nine male professional outfield footballers whose average age, height, and mass were 25.7 years, 180 cm, 78.1 kg respectively from an ECL team competed in two matches separated by 75 hours.

The players completed an optional post-match recovery strategy that included: massage, cold-water immersion, or low intensity dynamic movement.

Team possession was greater in match two compared to match one (48 to 62%) while average pass frequency by each player increased in match two.

High intensity running was significantly greater during the second half of match 2 in comparison to the first half.

Salivary cortisol was significantly elevated immediately post-match one compared to baseline. Jump height was reduced post-match one for up to 40 hours.

In conclusion, the ECL football players in this study did not experience impaired physical performance in the second match after 75 hours of recovery, indicating that players coped with this short recovery period between matches. In addition, support for the use of athlete monitoring to assess recovery status is evident since each match elicited different post-match hormonal and neuromuscular responses.

Body composition assessment of English Premier League soccer players: a comparative DXA analysis of first team, U21 and U18 squads

Jordan Milsom, Robert Naughton, Andy O’Boyle, Zafar Iqbal, Ryland Morgans, Barry Drust and James P. Morton

Abstract

Professional soccer players from the first team under twenty-one and under eighteen squads of an English Premier League soccer team were assessed for whole body and regional estimates of body composition using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Per cent body fat was lower in 1st team compared with both U21 and U18 players. However, this difference was not due to variations in fat mass between squads but rather the presence of more lean mass in 1st team and U21 compared with U18 players. Accordingly, fat mass index was not different between squads, whereas lean mass index was greater in 1st team players compared with U18 players. Differences in lean mass were also reflective of higher lean tissue mass in all regions, for example, upper limbs/lower limbs and trunk. Data suggest that training and nutritional interventions for younger players should therefore be targeted to lean mass growth as opposed to body fat loss.

Dejan Lovren: Liverpool defender feels the future at Anfield is bright

Dejan Lovren: Liverpool defender feels the future at Anfield is bright

Dejan Lovren feels the abundance of young talent at Liverpool means there is no limit to what the club can achieve.

The Reds have compiled a 10-game unbeaten run since December and moved to within two points of the Premier League top four with their 2-0 win at Southampton on Sunday.

It is a return to form for a club who challenged for the title last season but who struggled in the first half of the current campaign to adjust to life after Luis Suarez, who was sold to Barcelona in the summer.

Their goalscorers at the weekend were 22-year-old Phillippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling, who is already an England international at the age of 20, while teenager Jordon Ibe has recently established himself in the Reds’ first team.

Martin Skrtel was the only player in Liverpool’s starting XI at Southampton in his 30s as they fielded a line-up with an average age of 23.4 years.

"We have massive, massive talent and we can just go higher and higher because everyone is so young," said former Southampton defender Lovren.

"With the talent and young (players), I think we can achieve whatever we want, whatever we imagine.

"We just need to work hard and give our best on the pitch."

Lovren, like Adam Lallana, also had to handle the attention of the St Mary's crowd, who let them know in no uncertain terms their dissatisfaction at their summer exits.

"It was an amazing win," Lovren said. "It was a tough game for us and we knew when we arrived here that it would be difficult for us.

"It's a massive three points for us, now we're a step closer to the top so we need to continue like this. I think we did a great job.

"Of course, it was a special moment to play against my ex-team – especially after the win, I'm more happy."

The victory was not without controversy, though, as referee Kevin Friend made a string of controversial calls, with Filip Djuricic twice taken down in the box before Lovren handled late in the first half.

"I am not sure for all three (penalty claims)," Lovren said.

"I know for mine when I touched the ball with the hand, I know it was too close. It was a deflection so I couldn't react and I don't think it was a penalty.

"For the first two, I am not sure - I didn't see. I was a little bit far away. I think at the end I think the referee was doing a great job."

That is not something Southampton midfielder Djuricic agreed with after being taken down by Emre Can and then Joe Allen in the opening minutes.

"I think the second one was a clear penalty," he said. "The first one, okay, I fell down because I felt the contact.

"The referee in that case could or could not whistle, but the second one I think was a clear one and it could decide the game on a different way, but we could also play a little bit better in the offensive line, and be more direct."

Pencapaian___

1. Mignolet : A+

Pelajar terakhir menerima A+ ialah Emre Can yg membolehkan beliau diberi RMT. Mignolet perlu mendapat markah A vs City untuk menebus mata ganjaran itu. 5 consecutive cleansheet di Away game mengulangi sejarah 30 tahun yg lepas dan kali terkahir 5 cleansheet berturut turut home and away pada 9 tahun yg lepas. Berjaya melakukan aksi Neuer yg kurang disenangi pihak lawan. Namun cikgu tutup mata.

******

2. Lovren - B+

Markah tertinggi bekas penolong ketua kelas bilik sebelah. 7 kali ! Harap ianya tidak disengajakan.berjaya memeberi hari sukar kepad Elia yg 2 - 3 kali kena pau di depan kelas.

******

3. Skrtel - A

Apo nak Dikato !

*****

4. Emre Can - B+

Selepas 2 exam sebelum ini dia agak mamai. Dia bangkit untuk berjuang demi mempertahankan RMT beliau selepas diberi notis minggu lepas. Menjaga depan gate sekolah dengan baik dan tegas mengatasi budak yg suka merengek seperti djuricic. Memang multipositioner tulen. Kanan kiri atas bawah kecuali keeper je dia belum. Yg tu Enrique senyum. Terlibat dalam early controversial tackle. Tapi clean!

*****

5. Ibe - B+

Involved dengan banyak touch cuma jawapan dia tak cukup tepat bila di bahagian rumusan. Yang pasti dia adalah pelajar yg paling bahaya bila on the ball. Cuma terlalu banyak sponsor kelas lain.passing kerap lose di final third. 8 lose passes ! Ibe anda diperhatikan!

******

6. Markovic - B

2 succesful tackles.

Dikeluarkan atas faktor mahukan fresh leg yg terus konsisten mengawal ancaman Clyne.

*****

7. Allen - B+

Berjaya menjawab kertas dengan baik tapi bukan cemerlang sebab dia bukan budak bahasa tetapi dihantar untuk pertandingan pantun menggantikan Lucas yg masih MC.

2 inteceptions

4/5 succesful tackles !

Good game. Anda kian meningkat cuma sikap anda yg terlalu pendiam membuatkan anda kerap dihentam persatuan PIBG.

*****

8. Henderson - B+

50 total passes, menjadikan dia pelajar paling banyak belanja rakan rakan dan tak kedekut.

4/5 tackles. Rajin membantu geng budak belakang dan memastikan kelas dalam keadaan teratur dan pelajar bertugas ikut jadual. Meyukarkan Wanyama dan Elia yg nak buat projek.

*****

9. Coutinho - A

Dengan bangganya, kami ingin memberikan apresiasi ke atas PC10 kerana berjaya menyelesaikan soalan sukar dalam masa yg cepat dengan teknik menjawab jarak jauh (mjj). FIRST SHOTS AND FIRST GOAL.Wonder goal sekali lagi. Dah 2 kali wonder goal mungkin sebab dia suka tengok wonderpet yg suka membantu haiwan yg kesusahan. Secara keseluruhan ,good tapi not exellence sebab sekolah terpaksa menggunakan kaedah meyerap tekanan atau preserverance tactics. Focus more to defense dan win the balm di centre. Jadi semua budak meja depan agak kurang involvement berbanding meja belakang.

*****

10. Lallana - C+

Mungkin teruja kembali ke sekolah lama beliau. Tak ada killer passes. Namun dia ada membantu geng meja belakang sebab agak terhad aktiviti latih tubi di meja depan. konfem dia sign sendiri report card ni tak nak tunjuk parents.

*****

11. Sterling - B+

*****

12. Sturridge - B-

Good performance namun pihak sekolah merasakan di patut membawa balik 1 gol. 3 shots on goal. Tapi nak buat macamana, budak budak duduk meja depan memang tak banyak aktiviti semalam.

*****

13. Moreno - B+

2 tackles, 2 clearances dan 1 interception.good play. Decision dia utk menggolekan bola ke kawasan depan keeper membuatkan kelas sebelah terbocorkan jawapan.

We round-up the best newspaper reaction from Liverpool’s terrific 2-0 win away to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - Sunday, February 22, 2015: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the second goal against Southampton with team-mates Jordan Henderson and Alberto Moreno during the FA Premier League match at St Mary's Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There is a definite argument to say that this was the Reds’ most important win of the season so far, and it now makes Champions League qualification a distinct possibility.

Defeat for Brendan Rodgers‘ side against a fellow top-four rival would have been fairly disastrous, but the professional manner in which they gained all three points was hugely impressive.

Liverpool were never at their fluent best, and were fortunate to have the referee on their side a few times, but defensively they were terrific and the brilliant attacking duo of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling produced at the other end of the pitch.

It’s now five away clean sheets in a row in the league—the first time the Reds have achieved that since 1985—and Rodgers’ men now have the kind of momentum that saw them produce an unlikely title charge last season.

James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo lauded the way in which Liverpool ground out the victory, and was particularly praiseworthy of Martin Skrtel and Simon Mignolet‘s performances:

This was an afternoon for character, spirit, guts and resilience and Liverpool displayed all those qualities in abundance.

[…]

In the second half they gave a lesson in how to control a contest as they kept Southampton at arm’s length. This side may lack the swashbuckling attacking brilliance of Rodgers’ class of 2013/14 but he has now created a slick, cohesive unit. The balance of the team is so much better and that’s reflected in their new-found defensive steel.

[…]

Martin Skrtel was their outstanding performer against Southampton as he repeatedly repelled their advances. Saints top scorer Graziano Pelle barely had a kick. Behind him, Simon Mignolet once again played a starring role. No-one epitomises the Reds’ transformation this season more than the Belgian keeper.

The Daily Telegraph ‘s Henry Winter highlighted just what a huge improvement it has been since that miserable defeat at Old Trafford, and the ground they have made up on their rivals:

Liverpool were never at their fluid best but there is a resilience to them now, and it is 469 minutes since they last conceded an away goal in the league.

The last goal this current Liverpool side let in on the road in the league was on Dec 14 at Old Trafford when Robin van Persie scored with 19 minutes remaining of a 3-0 win. Defeat dropped Liverpool to 10th position, leaving them 10 points behind third-placed Manchester United, and raising questions about Rodgers.

Liverpool are now two points behind the fourth-placed United, three behind Arsenal, who are third, and with Rodgers being feted from all quarters.

Barney Ronay of the Guardian gushed over the brilliance of Coutinho’s stunning goal, and also heaped praise on the hugely promising Jordan Ibe:

Coutinho took two paces forward and produced a moment of pure inspiration, a dipping right-foot shot that twanged down over the line off the bar. Here a single moment of sublime, explosive skill was pretty much the sole moment of illumination in a messy, cantankerous first half.

For Liverpool, Jordon Ibe has made the biggest impression in recent weeks, a 19-year-old who already looks the model of a high-class young attacking footballer. Ibe’s power and athleticism look pretty state of the art, reflecting a vogue at the highest level for muscular, imposing, skilful wide players.

Finally, the Daily Mail ‘s divisive Martin Samuel believes a top-four finish is now more than possible, and was impressed that Liverpool showed they could win when not at their brilliant best:

Nobody gets out the bunting for sixth place, but there is more to Liverpool’s inch-by-inch progress up the table than first sight suggests.

This win edged them past Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but the gap now separating Liverpool from clubs with loftier ambitions is increasingly small. They are a point behind Southampton, whose bubble may be about to pop, two points off Manchester United in fourth, three points away from Arsenal in third. Inferior goal difference means Liverpool will need to go that extra yard but, on this form, it is well within their power.

They scored with their first two shots on target in this game, the second in the 73rd minute, but that should not detract from the display. This was a gutsy, impressive win on a day that made it impossible to play the brand of football that is the trademark of manager Brendan Rodgers.

Next up for Liverpool is Thursday’s Europa League second-leg clash with Besiktas at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium (6:00pm kick off GMT); the venue of the Reds’ unforgettable Champions League triumph over AC Milan in 2005.

“Gutsy, resilient and spirited” — How the papers reacted to Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Unknown   at  17:19  No comments

Menjelang pertemuan dengan Barcelona, Frank Lampard memberikan pandangan tentang Messi dan Suarez.

"Saya sangat suka melihat aksi Luis Suarez. Dia mungkin mengambil masa utk setelkan diri di Camp Nou sebab di Liverpool dia adalah pemain utama (main man)."

"Saya tahu saya akan banyak berdepan dengan LeoMessi jika saya diturunkan. Cabaran paling sukar ialah menutup ruang. Walaupun kami closing down tight . Messi tetap berupaya untuk mengambil kesempatan dari celah celah ruang yang kecil"

Brendan Rodgers accused Southampton of disrespecting their former players Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert after Liverpool's "outstanding" win at St Mary's.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - Sunday, February 22, 2015: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Southampton's manager Ronald Koeman during the FA Premier League match at St Mary's Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

An exceptional, early Philippe Coutinho strike and Raheem Sterling's second-half effort helped the Reds collect a seventh win in 10 league matches, moving them within two points of the top four.

The 2-0 victory was not without its controversy, though, as Southampton were frustrated by a series of controversial decisions by referee Kevin Friend and his assistant officials.

Dejan Lovren got away with handball towards the end of a first half which began with Filip Djuricic twice being taken down in the penalty box. Friend did not deem the challenges of Emre Can and Joe Allen to be fouls.

"Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't," Liverpool manager Rodgers said. "Sometimes you don't away from home.

"I thought the referee was excellent, but obviously with the pressure he was under from the crowd, especially with them being 1-0 behind, makes it big decisions for him, but I thought in the main he got them right.

"It was an outstanding win for us, very controlled.

"Of course you have to defend at times, particularly away from home against a very good side, but it's a wonderful win for us.

"As the game wore on we might have got in more had we picked our passes better, but (we got) two wonderful goals, different types of goals, and (we were) defensively very strong."

Rodgers was quick to praise Lovren after the former Southampton defender helped Liverpool to a clean sheet on what was a rare start.

The Croatia international was jeered throughout the match after making an unsavoury summer exit, as was former Southampton captain Lallana on his first return to the south coast.

Rodgers was upset by the way Lallana was treated at St Mary's, where the Liverpool manager believed there was a lack of gratitude towards another returning player, Lambert.

"Adam was the captain here for two years, gave incredible service to Southampton and I know for a fact he could have left here a number of times and didn't," the Reds boss said.

"And to get the reception he got I thought was disappointing.

"I looked in the match programme and there was nothing relevant to his time here and all the time has been here since a boy.

"Then there's the like of Rickie Lambert – great servants to here, incredible players that have got the club to where it is today. There was no mention of him, which I thought was sad.

"I can see Lovren because he was only here a year, but those two guys gave their heart and soul to Southampton and are big supporters of this club.

"They've moved to one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it is hard to deny a player that. I thought they could been given a wee bit more today."

Rodgers may not have read every page in the programme, however. Club captain Kelvin Davis described Lallana and Lambert as "fantastic servants" in his notes.

Liverpool are without in-form defender Mamadou Sakho for their Premier League encounter with Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, whilst both Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli start on the bench.

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND - Saturday, March 1, 2014: Southampton's St. Mary's Stadium before the Premiership match against Liverpool. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

When these two sides met at Anfield on the opening day of the season, Liverpool ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Sturridge.

The Reds would move to just two points off fourth place and three points off third with victory against the Saints as Brendan Rodgers‘ side look to capitalise on dropped points for Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham this weekend.

With Steven Gerrard out injured, Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen marshall the Liverpool midfield, with Lazar Markovic and Jordon Ibe on the flanks and Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho supporting Raheem Sterling up front.

Emre Can, Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren make up the defence in front of Simon Mignolet in goal, with Kolo Toure and Glen Johnson on the bench.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Lovren, Henderson, Allen, Markovic, Ibe, Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling.

Substitutes: Ward, Johnson, Toure, Lambert, Sturridge, Moreno, Balotelli

Southampton: Forster, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Targett, Wanyama, S. Davis, Ward-Prowse, Djuri?i?, Elia, Pellè.

Substitutes: K. Davis, Gardos, Schneiderlin, Gardos, Long, Mané, Tadi?, Reed.

Southampton v Liverpool gets underway at 4:15pm and it’s live on Sky Sports 1 in the UK.
