entri - PFC Ludogorets Razgrad.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists he did not make a mistake by resting Raheem Sterling in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Sterling has emerged as a key player for the Reds over the last 10 months but, having played 180 minutes in England's two matches last week, he was benched for the Premier League visit of Villa to Anfield.

He was brought on after an hour with Liverpool struggling to break down their opponents but even he could not unlock the resilient Villa defence.

The 19-year-old will be back in the team for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Bulgarian outsiders Ludogorets, but Rodgers has defended his decision on Saturday.

"We have an exciting couple of months and this was a game I felt we could do that," he said.

"If he didn't have international football then it would have been the case.

"He is a big player for us but we have built a squad here where I have to trust all the players but as a team and a squad we didn't deliver.

"He will certainly play on Tuesday night."

Liverpool's starting XI against Villa contained five summer signings - with midfielder Adam Lallana making his debut after an injury in pre-season - but Rodgers said that was not the reason for defeat.

"We had new players against Tottenham (whom they beat 3-0 before the international break) and we were outstanding," he said.

"The players we have brought in are very good players and I am delighted with them but we just failed to open Villa up.

"We just lacked that bit of quality. We have seen many games here where we ended up with 15-20 shots on target but that didn't happen."

Rodgers hopes the return of the Champions League will give his side the chance to bounce back in midweek.

"This game has gone and we now have to focus on that," he said.

"There is nothing better than to get going again on Tuesday night in a competition we love.

"Hopefully we can start that competition with three points."

It’s the morning after that dreadful sinking feeling that three points were completely squandered as Liverpool went down 1-0 to Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers looks dejected against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Sunday back pages aren’t letting Brendan Rodgers‘ side get away with what was ultimately a damp squib of a performance.

Bar an early ambitious volley from Lazar Markovic, making his home debut for the Reds, Liverpool’s defensive frailties lead to them trailing after just eight minutes.

Gabriel Agbonlahor’s messy goal should have been avoided, but proved to be the winner with a dreary Liverpool performance to follow.

It was a damp squib of a game from the home side, being forced to play a very deep game on negative, perhaps too patient football.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Mail On Sunday ‘s Joe Bernstein had some words of criticism for one particular home debutant and an advert that was allowed to fly over the ground at kick-off:

Even though £25m England midfielder Adam Lallana and Manchester United reject Tom Cleverley were making club debuts, one-man publicity machine Balotelli was predictably the centre of attention.

Super Mario’s name was cheered louder than anyone else’s and a Liverpool lap-dancing club hired a plane to fly overhead and advertise their wares. Being photographed outside such an establishment was one of Balotelli’s many misdemeanours during his eventful spell at Manchester City.

Paul Wilson of The Observer believes Liverpool’s anonymous start was ultimately costly, and it could have been worse:

Liverpool started quite poorly, particularly in defence, and were a goal down after eight minutes. First, Mamadou Sakho allowed Gabriel Agbonlahor to claim a ball that should never have been his and was forced to concede an unnecessary corner, and a blocked Philippe Senderos header from Ashley Westwood’s cross stood up invitingly for Agbonlahor to poke into the bottom corner. Managers are never impressed when goals are conceded at set pieces and Liverpool were lucky not to give away another one four minutes later, when Senderos found space to get on the end of a Westwood free-kick but headed too high.

Liverpool found themselves struggling to find a way through a tight defence, with Villa’s game plan working perfectly in much the same way Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea came to “park the bus” near the end of last season.

Chris Bascombe of the Sunday Telegraph sums up the lack of ideas Rodgers’ side has when they haven’t taken their casual early lead:

By the time Liverpool found any rhythm they were faced with roadblocks at every turn. Only when Sterling was summoned on the hour was there a brief surge of belief, but it was short-lived.

The sense of desperation was palpable by the time Rodgers sent on Fabio Borini – a player he warned would get any game time two weeks ago – in a doomed salvage act. Coutinho struck the post, but there was no sustained pressure on Guzan.

The defensive performance from Liverpool was worrying, the new-look back four seemingly yet to find a cohesive stride.

The Independent on Sunday ‘s Tim Rich briefly describes a couple of the problems on show on Saturday:

Liverpool’s back four seemed to offer greater cause for Rodgers’ concern. They were shaky and indecisive. Commentating from the stands, Jimmy Case, one of Anfield’s immortals, thought the way Mamadou Sakho allowed the ball to go out for the corner that led to Villa taking the leas was “incompetent”. When Senderos was allowed a free header from a free-kick, the stadium seethed with anxiety.

Liverpool will need a quick reaction to Saturday’s performance with the Champions League opener against Bulgrarian side Ludogorets on Tuesday night.

What were your positives and negatives from Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa Villa on Saturday? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

SIMON MIGNOLET- 6 (out of 10)-

On an afternoon of poor performances by Reds players, the Belgian did little wrong. He could do nothing about Villa’s goal, and other than that was untroubled. Still lacks presence behind the defence though.

JAVIER MANQUILLO- 5

Too often the 20-year-old was negative in possession, he lost the ball cheaply and his crossing was largely poor. He must be more bold going forward if he is to nail down a starting place on a regular basis.

DEJAN LOVREN- 5

Lovren was hugely at fault for the goal, being out-muscled by Philippe Senderos in the lead-up to Gabriel Agbonlahor’s strike. It has been a shaky start to the 25-year-old’s Liverpool career.

MAMADOU SAKHO- 5.5

The 24-year-old needlessly gave away the corner that lead to Agbonlahor’s goal, and looked shaky throughout. His distribution was generally fine, but his decision-making was poor.

ALBERTO MORENO- 6

Defensively the 22-year-old Spaniard looked unconvincing, but he did at least get forward and offer attacking zest in wide areas. One of the Reds’ brighter players.

STEVEN GERRARD- 6

The skipper didn’t enjoy his finest performance, but he did little wrong. His passing was good, but there was often a lack of urgency about his play.

JORDAN HENDERSON- 6.5

Henderson was probably Liverpool’s best player on the day, but that’s not saying much. The 24-year-old never stopped running and getting forward, but his passing was a little off.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO- 5.5

After such dazzling pre-season form, Coutinho has struggled this season. He couldn’t find the space to influence proceedings, and barring a terrific late effort that hit the post, his shooting once again left a lot to be desired.

LAZAR MARKOVIC- 5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Markovic’s home debut was a forgettable one in general, with the 20-year-old struggling physically at times and his final ball very erratic. Replaced by Fabio Borini midway through the second-half.

ADAM LALLANA- 6

The 26-year-old was clearly off the pace on his Reds debut, following a knee injury, but he did at least offer more creativity and urgency than a number of his teammates. Substituted for Raheem Sterling on the hour mark.

MARIO BALOTELLI- 5.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli goes down injured Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Despite the pre-game hype surrounding Balotelli’s Anfield bow, he was on the periphery of things throughout, and often cut a frustrated figure. The Italian failed to fill the void left by the injured Daniel Sturridge, before being replaced by Rickie Lambert after 70 minutes.

Substitutes

RAHEEM STERLING (on for Markovic 60) 6.5

The 19-year-old added pace and threat to the team, and he was a huge loss to the side prior to being introduced.

RICKIE LAMBERT (on for Balotelli 70) 5.5

The 32-year-old was quiet when he came on, and fluffed his lines late on when in a dangerous position on the edge of the penalty area.

FABIO BORINI (on for Markovic 70) n/a

The Italian had no impact on proceedings.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted his side lacked their usual spark as they slipped to a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

After falling behind to a ninth-minute goal from Gabriel Agbonlahor following some slack defending, Liverpool pressed Aston Villa back for the remainder of the match.

The home side dominated possession and had 18 shots at goal, but just one on target, with Philippe Coutinho’s late effort against the post the closest they came.

Rodgers’ men often blew opponents away last season as they came close to winning the Premier League, but shorn of Luis Suarez and the injured Daniel Sturridge, they looked toothless at times.

"We started slowly in the game and only probably only started to click and up the tempo when we went 1-0 behind," Rodgers, who left teenager Raheem Sterling on the bench, told Sky Sports.

"I think the players gave everything. It was a bit of mixture, we couldn't find that quality in the final third of the field and Aston Villa defended well.

"We just couldn't find the final pass, we had enough of the ball but we just couldn't create so much.

“It is sometimes what happens. Normally we’re a team which starts very, very fast, but for some reason we didn’t start like that.

“When a good team gets in front, it can be hard to break them down.

“We had enough of the ball, and we had enough time to get back into the game, but we couldn’t do that.”

Liverpool succumbed to a hugely disappointing defeat at the hands of bogey side Aston Villa, with Gabriel Agbonlahor’s early goal the difference between the two sides at Anfield.

Football - FA Premier League - Liverpool FC v Aston Villa FC

Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa

Premier League / Anfield / Saturday, 13th September 2014

Goals: Agbonlahor (9)

By Henry Jackson

There were four Liverpool players in the starting XI who were given their home debut by Brendan Rodgers, with Alberto Moreno, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Mario Balotelli all making their Anfield bows.

Lallana and Markovic replaced Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge from the side that beat Tottenham 3-0 two weeks ago- the former was rested and the latter was injured- while Philippe Coutinho came in for the stricken Joe Allen.

Markovic had the first attempt of the game, firing a volley over the crossbar following good work from Moreno. The young Serb then headed wide, but Balotelli was in a prime position to put the Reds in front had he left it.

It was the hosts who took the lead, however, following a positive start. Gabriel Agbonlahor capitalised on some poor defending from a Villa corner, particularly from Dejan Lovren, poking his side into a 9th-minute lead. More shocking defensive work should have led to Philippe Senderos making it 2-0, but the former Arsenal man headed over when completely unmarked.

There was a flatness about Liverpool’s display, with endless corners given away and a spark lacking without Sterling and Sturridge in the side. Senderos was extremely lucky to stay on the pitch after a blatant trip on Balotelli which referee Lee Mason failed to spot.

Rodgers’ men continued to enjoy more of the ball around the half-hour mark, but barring a blocked effort by Lallana, more often than not their patient passing led to no chances created.

The game continued in a similar pattern for the remainder of the half, and although Lallana and Balotelli both fired efforts wide of Brad Guzan’s post, Paul Lambert’s side took a deserved 1-0 lead into the interval. A huge improvement was needed.

The Reds were unchanged when they emerged for the second-half, as they looked to overturn the first-half deficit. It was a positive response, with the passing more crisp and the atmosphere more passionate.

Sterling’s introduction after 60 minutes was met with great joy by the Liverpool faithful, but Villa continued to be extremely tough to break down. The 19-year-old fired over from range, but it was as close as Rodgers’ men came to levelling as the final quarter of the game loomed.

Balotelli and Markovic made way for Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini, as Rodgers tried to freshen things up, but that elusive goal just would not come.

It so nearly did, as Coutinho’s wonderful effort with 10 minutes remaining came back of the post, and Sterling drove the rebound straight into Henderson.

The game petered out in its final moments though, and Villa sealed yet another good win at Anfield. It was a deeply disappointing day on Merseyside.

Man of the Match: Jordan Henderson

Tactical Overview

Rodgers opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation rather than the 4-4-2 diamond used so effectively of late, with Coutinho deployed in the No. 10 role and Lallana and Markovic supporting Balotelli on either flank.

With several new players in the side, however, the team often looked disjointed. Balotelli and Lallana clearly lacked match sharpness, while the relationship between Lovren and Sakho often left a lot to be desired.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Manquillo, Moreno, Lovren, Sakho, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Markovic (Borini 70), Lallana (Sterling 60), Balotelli (Lambert 70)

Subs not used: Jones, Enrique, Lucas, Toure

Aston Villa starting XI: Guzan, Hutton, Baker, Senderos, Cissokho, Westwood, Delph, Cleverley, Richardson, Agbonlahor, Weimann.

Gabriel Agbonlahor: Celebrates after finding the net at Anfield

Gabriel Agbonlahor: Celebrates after finding the net at Anfield

Liverpool suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat at the hands of a determined Aston Villa side as Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the only goal at Anfield.

Villa struck in just the ninth minute as Philippe Senderos got in front of Dejan Lovren to meet Ashley Westwood’s corner, with Agbonlahor pouncing in the six-yard box to poke the ball home.

From that point on, Paul Lambert’s men defended in superb fashion with Senderos and Nathan Baker excellent as they repelled everything Liverpool had to throw at them.

Brendan Rodgers’ side never really tested Brad Guzan in a limp attacking display, with the closest they came to levelling coming when Philippe Coutinho hit the post and substitute Raheem Sterling fired the follow-up against Jordan Henderson.

Villa are now up to second in the table after an excellent start to the season, but Rodgers has much to ponder ahead of their UEFA Champions League return.

With Daniel Sturridge sidelined for up to three weeks with a thigh injury - for which Rodgers has still not forgiven England - it meant Liverpool started a game without him or Luis Suarez, a summer departure to Barcelona, for the first time since December 2012.

Last season the pair scored 56 league goals between them so it was immediately apparent where the Reds were most likely to be under the greatest strain.

Lambert knew this, and also the fact their opponents have still not entirely cracked defending set-pieces, and that was what he targeted.

Liverpool were denied space in the final third which stifled much of their forward progress, while the visitors attacked with speed when they had the chance and were aggressive at corners and free-kicks - which ultimately produced their winner.

Mario Balotelli was brought in by Rodgers last month to provide additional firepower but he spent much of the first half either being kicked or trying to avoid being kicked by Senderos.

The Swiss defender got away with at least one blatant hack at the former Manchester City striker off the ball which would have likely resulted in a card had referee Lee Mason or either of his linesmen seen it.

Whether it knocked Balotelli, making his home debut, off his stride or not it was the latter stages of the half before he started to show signs of life with one viciously-dipping shot with the aid of a deflection off Andreas Weimann dropping just wide of the post.

He also created a good chance for Adam Lallana, making his debut after injury in pre-season delayed his first appearance since a summer move, but the former Southampton midfielder drilled a half-volley just wide from Balotelli's lay-off on the edge of the area.

By that time Liverpool were already behind after mistakes by their two centre-backs.

First Mamadou Sakho tried to control the ball close to his own goalline instead of playing safe and ended up conceding a corner, from which Lovren got the wrong side of Senderos whose header created a scramble from which Agbonlahor scored in the ninth minute.

The goal was against the run of play as Lazar Markovic, also making his first Anfield appearance, had already volleyed over Alberto Moreno's far-post cross and headed wide after being involved in good build-up play with Henderson and Javier Manquillo.

While Lallana was deservedly booked for a late challenge on Tom Cleverley, making his debut after a deadline day loan move from Manchester United, Mason missed Senderos' kick at Balotelli and chose to take no action after Alan Hutton appeared to rake his studs down the Italian's knee.

Senderos could have rubbed further salt into the wound but headed a free-kick over when well placed and then blasted wide from close range at another corner.

Balotelli had the first chance of the second half, heading wide Steven Gerrard's corner.

Sterling's introduction, having been rested after international duty, on the hour raised the temperature a notch or two with Hutton booked for scything down the youngster within seconds of his arrival.

Villa's plan to smother Liverpool continued to work, however, and even the introduction of Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini for Balotelli and Markovic failed to produce the chances needed to rescue a point.

The closest they came was when Coutinho bent a shot around goalkeeper Guzan only for it to rebound back off the post as Villa left Anfield having taken their tally to eight points from their last four visits.
