Kolo Toure admits the team are very disappointed to have lost their first game of the season at home to Southampton on Saturday, but drew some perspective on the result.

The Reds have collected 10 points from their first possible 15, dropping points at Swansea and at Anfield against the Saints.

There are still 99 Premier League points still to play for this season, and Liverpool currently sit second in the table, behind only Chelsea.

Ivorian international defender Toure says the team will learn from their mistakes and look to get it right in the rest of the long campaign.

He told the club’s official website, “It’s a marathon – the season is very long and we’re going to have ups and downs.

“We all know that as a team we didn’t perform; it wasn’t one or two, it was the squad. We didn’t work as a team like we are used to.

“We need to get back to those basics, because that’s what our strength is – as a team we are really strong.

“We didn’t start the game very well as a team – we couldn’t pass the ball or move really. I don’t know why, but the performance wasn’t good from the whole squad.”

Toure started at right-back for the Reds in yesterday’s game, filling in for the injured Glen Johnson.

Although he looked fairly tidy in defence, his ability to go forward lacked the quality that Liverpool expect from Glen Johnson, who is currently sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Toure said that the side must move on and look to Wednesday’s League Cup third round tie at Old Trafford.

He added, “Now we just need to focus on the next game, there is not much time to think. We’ll analyse the game, see what we didn’t do well, and focus on the next game – which is a really important game against United.

“The most important thing is: how are we going to react to a setback like that? I’m sure the team is really strong mentally. Even 1-0 down, we were pushing, we saw the team were trying to come back.

“We didn’t have a chance to score the goal to make a draw. But the next game is going to be very important for us and we will do everything we can to win the game.”

Manchester United vs Liverpool gets underway at 7.45pm on Wednesday, 25th September.

On-loan Liverpool forward Fabio Borini is confident of impressing enough with Sunderland during the 2013-14 season to secure a place in the Italy squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

borini, fabio borini

The 22-year-old notched twice in 20 appearances for the Reds last year before sealing a season-long temporary switch to the Black Cats on transfer deadline day earlier this month.

Borini travelled to Euro 2012 with Italy ahead of his move to Anfield and, despite a debut campaign marred by injuries, impressed with two goals during the European U21 Championship in the summer.

With his country having already secured their ticket to the showpiece tournament at the end of the season, our No.29 is now determined to continue his progress at international level.

"I went to the European Championships two years ago when nobody expected - and I expect to do well enough this season to go to the World Cup," he said.

"I still have faith in my own ability because I proved in the U21 Euros this summer, after a bad season with injuries, that I can score goals.

"I came back after shoulder surgery and hadn't played a full game, but I played in the Euros and scored twice."

Two of Liverpool's loan stars enjoyed fruitful afternoons on Saturday with their temporary clubs – find out all of the details with our weekly loan watch update.

Suso was on the scoresheet for Almeria in their 2-2 La Liga draw at home to Levante yesterday. Former Liverpool midfielder Nabil El Zhar was on target for the visitors.

Academy midfielder Krisztian Adorjan played the whole game and struck a goal in stoppage time to help Groningen hammer RKC Waalwijk 4-1 in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Italian forward Fabio Borini played just short of an hour as Sunderland were thrashed 3-0 by West Bromwich Albion in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday.

In the Championship, full-back Jack Robinson returned from suspension to complete the full 90 minutes in Blackpool's 2-2 draw against Leicester City. Another ex-Red found the net in that match too - Paul Konchesky converted a penalty for the Foxes.

Striker Michael Ngoo entered the action for the final 11 minutes of Yeovil Town's 1-0 loss against Queens Park Rangers.

At League One level, Conor Coady was an unused substitute for Sheffield United in their 1-0 defeat by Preston North End at Bramall Lane.

In the same division, Joao Carlos Teixeira will be in contention when Brentford host Leyton Orient on Monday night.

Winger Oussama Assaidi will hope to feature for Stoke City when they travel to Arsenal later today.

Pepe Reina is likely to take part in one of the most anticipated matches of the weekend in Europe on Sunday evening - Serie A leaders Napoli face AC Milan at the San Siro.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet insists that his team can make amends for their 1-0 defeat by Southampton on Saturday by 'putting things right' when they travel to Manchester United next week.

The Reds' five-match unbeaten opening to the 2013-14 campaign was brought to an abrupt halt yesterday, with Dejan Lovren's goal handing the visiting Saints all three points at Anfield.

Mignolet and co will not have to wait long for an opportunity to taste victory once more, though, with a tantalising Capital One Cup clash against rivals United on the schedule for Wednesday.

"We wanted to win the game, especially when you play at home at Anfield against Southampton you want to get three points," the Belgian told Liverpoolfc.com.

"They came here, blocked us off and were really organised - which made it difficult for us to play and create chances. If you then concede in the second half, it's a disappointment.

"We've got another game on Wednesday, when we can put things right straight away; I think it's a perfect scenario to get back to it. We have a decent game to look forward to and everybody can put things right.

"Sometimes you have a disappointing result, but then you have to make sure the result and performance afterwards is back on top."

With injury sidelining Glen Johnson, vice-captain Daniel Agger carrying a knock and full-back Jose Enrique benched as a precaution, Brendan Rodgers was forced to alter his defence.

But Mignolet downplayed suggestions that regular changes to the backline in front of him were a significant factor in the side's unexpected blip against Southampton.

The 25-year-old continued: "We have a wide enough squad to deal with injuries and suspensions. Everybody can look back on their performance, and take the positives and negatives out of it.

"That's how it goes in the dressing room - we all have to look at ourselves. We have a game on Wednesday to put things right and I'm sure everybody will be up for it again.

"We have very strong individuals in the dressing room; I'm sure everybody will be back in training and looking forward to the game against Manchester United."

Having now fully served a 10-game suspension, Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez is eligible for selection again and our No.22 believes his return can provide an instant boost.

"Every single competitive game we play is important. We want to go out and win every game," the 'keeper concluded.

"Today we didn't manage to do that but we've got another opportunity on Wednesday and it's a big game as well.

"Luis Suarez is coming back, which can maybe give us a lift. So we've got positives to look forward to."

Within minutes of leaving the pitch on Saturday, there was only one question on Kolo Toure's mind: How do we recover from this setback?

The Ivorian defender was in the Liverpool XI as Southampton recorded an unexpected 1-0 victory over the Reds in the Barclays Premier League at Anfield yesterday.

A header from Saints defender Dejan Lovren on 53 minutes was enough to end Liverpool's unbeaten record in the division - but Toure is confident of an immediate response from his colleagues.

He told Liverpoolfc.com post-match: "It's a marathon - the season is very long and we're going to have ups and downs.

"We all know that as a team we didn't perform; it wasn't one or two, it was the squad. We didn't work as a team like we are used to.

"We need to get back to those basics, because that's what our strength is - as a team we are really strong.

"We didn't start the game very well as a team - we couldn't pass the ball or move really. I don't know why, but the performance wasn't good from the whole squad.

"Now we just need to focus on the next game, there is not much time to think. We'll analyse the game, see what we didn't do well, and focus on the next game - which is a really important game against United.

"The most important thing is: how are we going to react to a setback like that? I'm sure the team is really strong mentally. Even 1-0 down, we were pushing, we saw the team were trying to come back.

"We didn't have a chance to score the goal to make a draw. But the next game is going to be very important for us and we will do everything we can to win the game."

Despite fielding four players across the backline who generally operate as powerful central defenders, the goal Liverpool conceded derived from a corner into the penalty area.

"It's always difficult to concede from set-pieces, definitely," said a typically honest Toure.

"But we have been defending very well. Today they scored from a set-piece; in the Premier League, we know every free-kick and corner is a goal opportunity.

"We didn't defend very well on that part of the game, and we will work on that. We'll analyse the game, see what we can do better, what we need to improve, and get ready for the next game."

That next game represents a trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, to challenge Manchester United in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Our No.4 added: "It's very important, every game is really important for us.

"We're going to play the game like it's a cup final. Every game, that's what we want to do; play every game as 100 per cent as we can and try to win.

"It's a tough game and we know it's going to be a good challenge. I'm really happy that game is coming because we will show a reaction and how strong we are mentally."

Luis Suarez will be available for selection from Wednesday after completing his 10-game suspension, and Toure expects the Uruguayan to help further improve the Reds.

"He's a big player for us," the defender said. "We all love him and he's going to be back, which is really good for us. But we have good players who have been doing a great job as well.

"The strength in Liverpool now is the squad, the team - as a group we are really strong. We have another power coming, Luis Suarez, and he is welcome.

"We are really happy; we know that he is going to help us improve the team again."

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the Reds’ first defeat of the season earlier today when they went down 1-0 to Southampton at Anfield.

Watch the highlights of Liverpool 0-1 Southampton here >>

A second half header from Saints centre-back Dejan Lovran separated the two sides in a performance which seemed to lack pace or passion from Brendan Rodgers‘ men.

There were lots of question marks raised through the game – none more so than the decision to start with four centre-backs in defence.

There was a total of three different combinations at centre-back today with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel both substituted in the second half as Rodgers desperately tried to spark Liverpool into attack.

Mamado Sakho looked very uncomfortable in his left-back position until he was given a reprieve from the position by the eccentric-as-ever Jose Enrique.

In the middle of the park, Lucas and Steven Gerrard‘s performances seemed to run out of steam, which meant there was nothing linking the defence to Liverpool’s attack.

Nevertheless, Liverpool were still top of the Premier League when the full time whistle blew. They later fell to 2nd in the table, but only on goal difference, when Chelsea beat Fulham.

Brendan Rodgers acknowledged his frustration and admitted Liverpool were below par following their 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds suffered their first defeat of 2013-14 as Dejan Lovren's second-half header secured three points for the visitors.

Afterwards, Rodgers was honest in his appraisal of his side's performance.

He told his post-match press conference: "I think both [the result and performance] were very disappointing, in all honesty.

"We never really got going from the off - it was a bit lethargic and technically we were short today, so it was a very disappointing result and performance for us.

"As I said, technically, I was really disappointed today. I thought we never really got going and we were flat and slow in our game.

"Which hasn't been like us. We've normally started games very well. But we'll just put it down as one of those days and now we need to go on another good run."

Rodgers elected to select a back four consisting of Kolo Toure, Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho for the contest - and reporters quizzed the boss on his reasoning.

He explained: "It was really what we had available. We've got Glen Johnson out injured and Martin Kelly's only returning - he's had a few games, but he's still trying to work up his fitness having been out for a year.

"Jose Enrique is one we've got to keep an eye on his knee. He's got an issue with his knee and if there is an overload on that, it could maybe put him out longer term. We've got Cissokho out already, so it [Enrique's knee] was one we needed to keep an eye on.

"Kolo and Mamadou have played at full-back before, but obviously you lose a wee bit of that offensive threat. They coped as well as they possibly could.

"I thought Toure was exceptional today with his enthusiasm and drive to try to get into the game.

"But I just felt from the off we never really got going and then to cap it off we gave away a really poor goal from a corner.

"In the build up to it, we conceded possession poorly and then ended up conceding a corner. To have so many defensive-minded players, to lose a goal like that was criminal, really."

Agger, who missed Monday's 2-2 draw with Swansea due to a knock, was replaced by Jose Enrique on 57 minutes.

Rodgers continued: "He's had the problem with his side. We needed him to play, really. He hadn't trained all week and felt a bit of pain in the game, so we decided to take him off, try and be a bit more offensive and see if we could get 30 minutes or so out of Enrique.

"It's not ideal to have to play that [four centre-backs]. If it's something where we don't have players back fit and recovered, we may have to look at a different system that allows it to work.

"But we'll just accept that today we're not happy and we'll look forward to Wednesday night."

In addition to Glen Johnson and Aly Cissokho, Liverpool were also without the injured Philippe Coutinho, who was ruled out until towards the end of October due to a shoulder injury.

"We've been unfortunate to lose a number of injured players all at the same time," said Rodgers. "And when you bring out the likes of Glen Johnson and Coutinho and you haven't got Suarez in your team, then it can make a big difference.

"But we have what we have and the players have been brilliant. Today hurts, because we haven't tasted defeat for such a long time. I'm still very optimistic for the season. We've had good wins and we've drawn.

"Obviously the defeat today was hard to swallow, but our optimism is very much intact and we feel we can have a really good season."

Meanwhile, journalists asked Rodgers about the return of Luis Suarez from suspension.

The striker completed his ban against the Saints and will now become available for selection.

"I think that's a positive from today; the fact that he is back now, the ban has finished and he's available from next week," said Rodgers.

"But I can't underestimate how well the players have done. It's worth mentioning that this is our first defeat since March, where we lost against Southampton. So we've had two poor performances against them and it's cost us.

"In that period the players have been brilliant. Today was one of those days when we were right off it.

"Sometimes in these games it's players like him [Suarez], who can make the difference. It's going to be great to have him back."

On Suarez's fitness, Rodgers added: "I think he's in a good condition and he's been playing games, both behind closed doors and ones that have been organised for him. He's been doing a lot of specific work with the conditioning teams.

"He's obviously not going to be 100 per cent, when you come into these sorts of cup games and these games that are at a greater intensity.

"But he's a worker and he's a fighter and his condition is good. He's in a good place. He just needs to get games to bring him right up to full speed."

Rodgers' frustration at Saints defeat

Unknown   at  02:38  No comments

Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season ended at the hands of Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive Southampton side on Saturday as they were beaten 1-0 at Anfield.

Liverpool 0-1 Southampton

Saturday, 21st September 2013

Premier League

Anfield

Dejan Lovren rose above Daniel Agger early in the second half to score the only goal of a game in which Liverpool rarely mounted any real attacking presence.

It is a blip on an otherwise good year for Brendan Rodgers‘ men, who’s previous defeat to today was at the hands of the Saints at St Mary’s earlier in the year.

There was a total of three different centre-back partnerships throughout the game, with Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger and Mamadou Sakho all starting across the back for the Reds.
