Liverpool’s below-par start to the season has been epitomised by a lack of creativity in front of goal, writes Henry Jackson.

(All statistics provided by Squawka and WhoScored)

2013/14 was an unforgettable season for anyone associated with Liverpool Football Club, and despite the eventual disappointment of not winning the Premier League, Brendan Rodgers‘ side still played some of the most eye-catching football ever seen at Anfield.

Goals were scored by the bucket-load, teams were torn to shreds and the rate at which the Reds created chances was relentless. 101 goals in 38 league games was a magnificent return.

2014/15 Woes

The pre-season hype this summer saw many fans predicting, and expecting, the same this time around, but the opening month or so of the campaign has not gone to plan.

Three league defeats in just five matches, and just seven goals in that time, have seen Liverpool make a limp start to 2014/15. There has been a real flatness about the performances too, which is almost as worrying as the results.

Despite some very questionable defending, the key to the Reds’ lack of zest has been their failure to create clear-cut chances on a regular basis.

There is a worrying sign that opponents have learned how to negate Rodgers’ men; sitting deep and staying compact, before stinging them on the counter-attack or at set-pieces.

Liverpool have only scored once on the counter-attack so far too, which highlights the fact that more sides are playing a more cautious style against them in comparison to 2013/14.

Another noticeable statistic is that Liverpool have scored just once from set-pieces in their five leagues so far, compared to 36 in their 38 matches in 2013/14.

The person who arguably needs to shoulder the blame for this is Steven Gerrard. The 34-year-old’s delivery from wide areas was exceptional last season- time and time again he provided inch-perfect corners and free-kicks for the likes of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Sturridge- but so far this season he has been erratic, over-hitting numerous attempts.

The table below shows just how less effective the Reds have been in front of goal in the Premier League in comparison to last year.

LFC Premier League

2013/14

2014/15 (after 5 games)

Goals Per Game2.71.4
Chances Created Per Game12.810.4
Set-Piece Goals Per Game0.980.2
Shot Accuracy (%)5042

This shows that Liverpool’s attacking threat has diminished fairly alarmingly in almost every respect so far this season, in particular the goals scored and the aforementioned ruthlessness from set-pieces.

Sturridge and Coutinho

A player who has been a huge loss to the side in recent weeks is Daniel Sturridge. It is very easy to look at the void Luis Suarez has left since joining Barcelona- any side would miss a player widely regarded as one of the top five in world football- but Sturridge has been equally missed since picking up an injury with England at the start of the month.

The 25-year-old scored 21 goals last season, made seven others for teammates and averaged 3.4 shots per game. Prior to injury this time around he had averaged 4.3.

He might frustrate a little at times, but the one thing Sturridge guarantees is a goal threat. He is a terrific finisher, has underrated creativity and his movement and awareness get both himself and teammates into goalscoring position.

Although the arrival of Mario Balotelli has added undoubted quality to the squad, he lacks the dynamism and constant threat of the former Chelsea man, and is being shown up somewhat because of it. Liverpool look a different side with Sturridge playing.

Philippe Coutinho is another who makes a difference when he’s at the top of his game. The 22-year-old has had a poor start to the campaign- such a surprise, considering his magnificent pre-season form- failing to dictate games and open up defences with the brilliance he displayed last season.

He has created just three chances this season at an average of just one a game, whereas in 2013/14 he produced 64 opportunities for teammates at nearly two a game.

His shooting has also left a lot to be desired, with the Brazilian failing to hit the target at any point so far this season. Although the 38% accuracy he had in 2013/14 is far from memorable, it looks clinical in comparison.

Because confidence is relatively low at the moment, the Reds’ much-praised passing game is also suffering. The tempo is simply not there, and too many players look happy to play the easy ball rather than take risks. Last season there was an absolute fearlessness about them, which is in total contrast to their current frame of mind.

Conclusion

It’s very easy to start panicking this early into the season, but there are definite worries about Liverpool’s lifelessness in front of goal since their fortunate opening weekend victory over Southampton.

The return of Sturridge, hopefully against Everton on Saturday, should make a huge difference, while Coutinho’s form remains key. The integration of new players also takes time, and the likes of Balotelli, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic are all creative attacking players who should get better and better.

It’s far from panic stations just yet, but if it continues in the coming weeks it may start getting to that stage.

Daniel Sturridge: Might return against Everton on Saturday

Daniel Sturridge: Might return against Everton on Saturday

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has not ruled Daniel Sturridge out of his plans for Saturday's Merseyside derby clash with Everton.

The England striker has not featured for his club since the 3-0 win over Tottenham at the end of August after suffering an injury to his thigh while on international duty.

Sturridge missed the start of Liverpool's Champions League campaign and two defeats in the Premier League but Rodgers says there is a chance he could be back for the 232nd derby, which takes place at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

Even if Sturridge misses out, Rodgers is sure he will be back in his first-team plans soon, with a trip to Basel coming up in midweek as well as their busy spell continues.

Rodgers said: "We've got a number of injuries that we're just going to give every chance to. Obviously the game is 48 hours away.

"[Sturridge] is a player who is out on the field working. Daniel and a number of others we'll assess nearer the time. If he doesn't make it, then he won't be far off after that.

"He is someone that responds well to treatment and it's gone well - he's out on the field. There's still a couple of days to go yet before the game. The most important thing is that he is nearer to fitness.

"He certainly won't be match fit - he hasn't played for a few weeks. But it would be great to have him back because he's a wonderful player for us.

"He's a great reference for our team at the top of the field. His pace and movement and quality that we saw the last time he played for us, against Tottenham. He was exceptional.

"We'll be very happy to have him back and we hope that can be this weekend. But we'll assess over the next couple of days."

Kolo Toure: Liverpool defender ready for Merseyside derby

Kolo Toure: Liverpool defender ready for Merseyside derby

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has warned Everton that they will not repeat the mistakes they made against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

The Reds needed a penalty shootout to get the better of the Championship club in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

Brendan Rodgers’ side conceded twice in normal time to play out a 2-2 draw, before winning the shootout 14-13.

Liverpool will now take on Everton in the Merseyside derby in the Premier League on Saturday.

Toure insists that he and his team-mates have learned from their mistakes against Middlesbrough and will be more prepared against the Toffees at Anfield.

“We will learn from our mistakes and prepare for what we know will be a tough game,” the centre-back told the Liverpool Echo.

“We beat them 4-0 here last season and I am sure they will know we are really quick going forward.

“I think it will be a tight game but we’re at home and we’ll look to go out fast. We know winning this one would make a big difference.

“There’s a lot riding on it and we need the three points. We can’t think about any other games coming up, we need to focus on Everton and give everything to this game.”

However, Toure admits that winning against Everton will not be easy and says that they should not lose focus because of next week’s Champions League commitment.

“It’s going to be a tough game against Everton but we will give our all again and we’re confident,” said the 33-year-old.

“We’ll focus on that one and try to do as well we did against them here last season.

“Both teams are back in Europe and that can take a lot out of you because you play against tough teams and you can lose a bit of focus on the Premier League.”

Liverpool’s penalty shootout victory at home to Middlesbrough in Tuesday night’s League Cup tie saw Jordan Rossiter emerge as a genuine positive, writes Jack Lusby.

Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool continued their mediocre form in Tuesday’s third round encounter at home to Middlesbrough, with a 2-2 extra-time draw followed by one of the most remarkably drawn-out penalty shootouts in the English football’s history.

Eventually emerging 14-13 victors, this was an unwanted distraction for a Reds’ side who, despite poor league form, should have sealed their progress in normal time.

Heading in to Saturday’s Merseyside Derby, Rodgers needed to build momentum with this victory, but a stuttering run continued. However, there are plenty of positive to take from the tie.

The performances of peripheral figures Jose Enrique and Suso will have provided encouragement with the manager’s squad thinning, whilst the senior debuts of the two Jordans, Williams and Rossiter, suggest a bright future for the club.

17-year-old midfielder Rossiter, in particular, gave a great account of himself in his first competitive outing under Rodgers.

Jordan Rossiter

A combative young midfielder, Rossiter has been with the club since he was six years old, having been signed for the Liverpool Academy after being scouted playing for his school side.

The 17-year-old has captained both the U18s and U21s, and last season was named the club’s Academy Player of the Season, after another barnstorming set of performances which saw Rossiter named on Rodgers’ substitutes’ bench for last December’s loss at Chelsea, and the following month’s victory at home to Hull City.

Like many other young players throughout the years, Rossiter has been lumbered with somewhat of an albatross, being compared to current Reds captain Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard’s long-time teammate Jamie Carragher previously opined that Rossiter has “got a bit of character and steel that me and Stevie have had.”

A popular member of the Academy, a debut for Rossiter clearly meant a lot to those involved with the club, prided with their emphasis on developing youth throughout the years.

Deployed in a three-man midfield alongside Adam Lallana and Lucas Leiva against Middlesbrough, Rodgers would have hoped to employ this steel in order to avoid a lack of presence in the middle of the park found the previous weekend against West Ham United.

Perhaps ironic given this panache was lacking in Gerrard at the Boleyn Ground.

Vs. Middlesbrough

Happily, Rossiter rewarded Rodgers’ selection with an emphatic performance, topped perhaps only by Raheem Sterling and Suso from the Liverpool side.

With Lallana, naturally, providing the more advanced creative outlet within the Reds’ midfield three, Rossiter operated in tandem with Lucas in receiving the ball in a deep-lying position and ensuring possession was recycled astutely.

The 17-year-old outlined his composure on the ball by consistently finding his teammates with a pass and, more often than not, these were forward passes—this is a young player with no fear or reticence.

Furthermore, Rossiter continued this fearless approach with several shots from range, and it was this inclination to target the Middlesbrough goal belied the profligacy of Rossiter’s teammates—decked out in no-frills black boots, the midfielder’s style proved consistent.

The crowning moment of this debut, clearly, came with Rossiter capping his display with a well-taken long-range effort on 10 minutes, after collecting a deflected Rickie Lambert effort.

Celebrating wildly, this was clearly a monumental moment for the Reds youngster and, in more positive circumstances, may have provided the Anfield faithful with a moment to match the delirious revelry following Jon Flanagan’s first goal for the club against Spurs last season.

Continuing the theme of wholesale joy, Flanagan led the brigade as myriad club figures praised the performance and influence of Rossiter against Middlesbrough.

Clearly a popular figure, this debut performance may stand as a significant moment in the future of Liverpool under Rodgers—although the Ulsterman will do well to protect one of his most promising of Academy prospects when introducing Rossiter in the future.

The Future

After any outstanding contribution such as Rossiter’s, a young player is likely to be hyped to no end, and it is important to remain reserved regarding the future of a 17-year-old who has just made his first senior outing for the club.

Luckily, Rossiter is seemingly a level-headed young player, and his post-match interview reflected this, saying:

“To score on my debut, I couldn’t have asked for any more. It’s a dream come true to be honest. It was brilliant. I’m made up.

“I know I need to keep my feet on the ground and keep on improving. If I do that then hopefully I’ll get more appearances in the future.”

The midfielder is clearly aware of the competition ahead of him at Anfield, with Rodgers signing players such as Emre Can to add depth and quality to his midfield this summer.

However, and current injury to Can outlines, this season stands to be a congested one for a Liverpool side already struggling with the demands of added competitive fronts in the Champions League, and Rossiter may benefit from this.

The victory over Middlesbrough sees the Reds through to the Fourth Round where they’ll face Swansea, – it’s possible that Rodgers will continue to field players such as Rossiter in this encounter, giving the youngster another opportunity to shine.

The Liverpool manager is the perfect steward for an aspiring young player looking to break through, and Rodgers spoke after Tuesday night’s win claiming “my job is to grow young talent otherwise there is no point having our academy.”

After a fearless and hugely encouraging outing, the Liverpool manager could do worse than to look to Rossiter to fill out his squad this season.

Can Jordan Rossiter make a further impact for Liverpool this season? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool stumbled past Middlesbrough in the League Cup on Tuesday night, but among the positives was the debut of Jordan Williams – who replaced fellow debutant Jordan Rossiter late in the game.

ANFIELD, ENGLAND - Friday, August 22, 2014: Liverpool's Jordan Williams before the Under 21 FA Premier League match against Manchester United at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After 17-year-old starter Rossiter grabbed his first professional goal just 10 minutes into his first team debut, Williams courageously stepped up and buried home a penalty in front of Kop in the dramatic shootout win. It was the birth of what Reds everywhere hope will be two future Kop favourites.

While a first team bow is always a momentous occasion, whispers have surfaced around the exciting future ahead of Rossiter, and the local lad who joined the club aged 6 has enjoyed previous recognition with Rodgers’ squad. Since the age of 16, he’s trained regularly with the first team stars and was even named on the bench last season against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. For Jordan Williams however, it’s been a slightly different story.

Background

Born Michael Jordan Williams, but known to his teammates and coaches as Jordan, the composed midfielder didn’t join the Anfield ranks until the age of 14, when he signed for Liverpool along with goalkeeper Ryan Crump from Wrexham, whom he joined previously from Bangor City.

The Bangor born 18-year-old has been a mainstay of the clubs’ under 21 team, featuring regularly for Alex Inglethorpe’s side last season despite still being eligible for the youth team – for whom he made 15 appearances and scored once alongside 21s involvement.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, September 23, 2014: Liverpool's 'Suso' Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Saenz De La Torre celebrates scoring the second goal against Middlesbrough during the Football League Cup 3rd Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The versatile Welshman spent most of that time with the next group up operating in defence, again scoring once in eight appearances this time, but showed with the impressive performance at the highest level on Tuesday night that he is equally adept when in the middle of the action.

First Team & International Recognition

After impressing consistently with the under 21 side and bravely over-coming a career threatening knee injury, the talented youngster was rewarded for his commitment and continued his rise through the clubs’ system with a second half substitute appearance in the first teams’ ‘end-of-season’ friendly against Shamrock Rovers, coming on for Rafael Paez at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin – a game played in front of an excellent crowd of 42,517.

Speaking after his appearance, he told NewsNorthWales:

“It was an unbelievable feeling to make my debut in front of 42,000 people, and to be around some first team players. Putting the shirt on with your name on it is a very proud moment, not just for me but for my family as well.

“The atmosphere was something that I’ve never experienced, considering it was a friendly it was still very loud. Brendan Rodgers just said for me to enjoy it when I was ready to come on.”

International recognition followed his steady progress, and at the beginning of September, Williams made his debut for Wales’ under 21s side in a UEFA qualifier against Lithuania. He started as a centre back that special night, in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Dream Debut

The years of hard work at club level came to fruition on Tuesday night, when the Welshman was handed a surprise debut in the Capital One Cup tie. Reports pre-match indicated that he was included in the 20-man squad for the game along with Rossiter and fellow prospects Sheyi Ojo and Kevin Stewart and hours later, he was named as a substitute for the match.

The dream moment came with 11 minutes to play when he entered the field replacing the goal scoring debutant after 79 minutes and the game was forced into extra-time meaning Williams enjoyed a further 30 minutes of action on his Anfield bow.

What can’t have been envisaged however was what happened next as the game had to be settled with a dramatic penalty shootout. Raheem Sterling spurned the chance to fire the Reds into the next round of the competition, meaning responsibility of the first sudden death penalty fell to the debutant in front of the watching world.

With no evidence of nervousness whatsoever, the Welsh international kept calm and coolly slotted past Middlesbrough keeper Jamal Blackman in the Kop end goal – a moment he will remember forever – helping Liverpool to go on and win on spot-kicks.

Heaps of deserved praise followed for the 18-year-old from staff, team-mates and former players alike, as another academy graduate made the impressive step-up to the first team limelight.

Williams has already featured three times for the under 21s this term, and despite announcing himself on the first team stage, he could feature on Thursday night for Michael Beale’s team when they take on Patrick Vieira’s Manchester City.
