Mario Balotelli: Tough start to life at Anfield

Mario Balotelli: Tough start to life at Anfield

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has denied media reports linking Liverpool's misfiring striker Mario Balotelli with a move to the Turin giants in the winter transfer window.

The Italy international has scored just two goals since joining Liverpool from AC Milan in a £16million transfer in August and has yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season.

Allegri, who coached Balotelli at Milan before taking the helm of Juve in July, told Italian TV station RAI: "I think this is a made up story.

"Balotelli has done very well with me but he belongs to Liverpool and he is not a player that can arrive at Juventus."

The 24-year-old Balotelli, who is also a reported target of Paris St Germain, has struggled with a groin injury since November.

Balotelli's agent Mino Raiola insists that despite Balotelli's slow start to life at Anfield, the former Inter Milan striker will come good at Liverpool.

"I'm not worried," Raiola told RAI. " Mario has been out for almost 10 weeks with an injury and you cannot judge him until he is 100 per cent fit.

"It's not easy to go abroad and adapt quickly to a new team."

Raiola does not regret Balotelli's return to the Premier League.

The striker played almost three seasons at Manchester City before joining AC Milan in January 2013.

"Decisions are judged at the time when they are made," Raiola said. "In the summer, it was right (for Balotelli) to leave Milan and I would do it again.

"Mario has gone to the best league in the world.

"Now he is not doing well at Liverpool for different reasons but Mario is calm and he is working to return to be in top condition.

"I do not regret this transfer and Mario's departure from Milan."

Balotelli is under contract with Liverpool until June 2017.

Five years after Liverpool signed Maxi Rodriguez on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid, Jack Lusby assesses his Anfield career – proving not all free transfers are bad.

This week marks five years on from Liverpool’s signing of winger Maxi Rodriguez and, while the cultured Argentine will never be considered one of the club’s greatest ever players, there is cause to argue he is one of the club’s best signings in recent years.

Maxi spent just a season and a half with Liverpool, but remains a fondly regarded player by Reds supporters – with good reason. Indeed, you still hear how he “runs down the wing for me” (to the tune of Heartbeat’s theme song) on the odd away day.

A hugely underrated player, despite his cherished presence in the memories of Liverpool fans, Maxi was an important squad player for four successive Reds managers during a turbulent time.

Most paramount, however, Maxi proved that free signings can still be great players.

Moving to Merseyside—January 12th, 2010

Football - Liverpool FC sign Maxi Rodriguez

Maxi joined Liverpool in January 2010 with a mixed reputation. Primarily, he was considered a phenomenal, influential talent, whose performances for Espanyol had earned him a £5 million move to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2005.

A series of strong, committed performances endeared Maxi to the Atletico faithful, and the midfielder was rewarded with the captaincy in 2007, following the departure of Fernando Torres.

There was also that golazo for Argentina in the 2006 World Cup.

Elsewhere however, this reputation was soured by Maxi’s petulant reaction beyond subbed by manager Abel Resino in a game against Barcelona—the Atletico captain threw his armband on the floor with disgust.

This signalled the end of Maxi’s La Liga career, but a fortuitous offer of salvation beckoned.

On his signing, then-manager Rafa Benitez described his joy at finding his man, who possessed “character and a good mentality,” and would hopefully represent an end to a long search for a top-quality winger.

Maxi’s arrival followed the failed tenures of Antonio Nunez, Bolo Zenden, Mark Gonzalez, Nabil El Zhar and Ryan Babel.

Benitez continued: “He can play in three positions – on the right, left or as a second striker – and is someone with a very positive mentality, which is what we are looking for.

“He is comfortable on the ball, can pass and keep possession. He is good at getting into the box and scoring goals and a good finisher. Every year he gets five to 15 goals from the right side of midfield.”

The manager knew the quality he was signing, and Maxi rewarded Benitez’s faith.

The Liverpool Years

Maxi’s Liverpool debut came in a 1-1 away draw to Stoke City in the Premier League, replacing Philipp Degen as a 78th-minute substitute.

Continuing as a sub for Liverpool’s next game, a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, Maxi had to wait another week for his full debut—a drab 0-0 draw away to Wolves.

Maxi continued this peripheral role throughout the season, and arguably beyond that.

But, as a player Benitez, Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers could all depend on at the drop of a hat, Maxi was a rare dependable stalwart in his one and a half seasons at Merseyside.

That Maxi maintained a consistency despite this role is a marker of his quality.

Furthermore there were, of course, his goals.

Maxi played a prominent role in Liverpool’s surge to the 2011/12 League Cup Final, with a goal in the 2-0 quarter-final victory over Chelsea.

Then there was the exceptional spell where the Argentine netted seven times in three games, including consecutive hat-tricks against Birmingham City and, most outstanding, away to Fulham in a 5-2 victory.

In 73 games for Liverpool, Maxi scored 17 goals — a hugely useful utility player, and a committed professional.

A Cult Hero

When Maxi left for Newell’s Old Boys in the summer of 2012, the move was met with a mixed array of feelings from Liverpool fans.

The winger penned an emotional open letter on the announcement of his departure, declaring that “I am returning home with a suitcase full of great memories, good friends within the team and also within this great family that works every day in the club.”

Maxi’s mention of home underlined the sentiment behind this move: as with many ageing South American stars, the dream end to a player’s career is with the club where it all began.

For Maxi this was Old Boys, where he had spent three seasons in the first team after breaking through from the youth ranks.

That he is still producing the goods in the Primera Division, and for Argentina in the 2014 World Cup, at 34 years old underlines why this departure was a shock, and a footballing disappointment, for the Reds.

As Maxi’s letter continues, his love for the club that he lifted in dark periods from 2010 to 2012 goes some length to match this cherished Argentine outfit.

“Before signing for LFC, I just saw the club as one of the greatest institutions in football. After my time here I can confirm that this is not just a great club but also a great family.

“You can NOT imagine what a great honour it was for me when the Kop sang, ‘Maxi, Maxi Rodríguez runs down the wing for me da da da da dada…’”

In Maxi, Liverpool found a rare, unanimously shared cult hero—a player who, despite not necessarily having the impact of fellow signings from Spain such as Xabi Alonso or Fernando Torres, is held in a similar regard.

With an endearing passion and a consistent quality, Maxi became a true fans’ favourite.

Five years on, if Liverpool do dip into the free transfer market, either in January or in the summer, Liverpool fans should be wary not to scoff — there may be another Maxi Rodriguez waiting to shine.

It’s been a steady improvement at Liverpool in recent weeks, with Brendan Rodgers‘ side now able to enjoy a week to relax after the busy festive fixtures. Natalie Cork takes a look at why things have taken an upturn.

If stats and tables are to go by and not the running order of Match of the Day, then it’s pleasing that Liverpool’s form over the last five Premier League games is bettered only by high-flying Southampton — 3 wins and 2 draws is the same as Man City over the busy Christmas / New Year fixtures.

Although it might not feel like it, the Reds have suffered just 1 defeat in 13 games; might we finally have turned a corner in what has been a dejected season so far?

It was somewhat palpable that Liverpool would stagger out the starting blocks this season, suffering a hangover from last year’s second place finish. After becoming accustomed to a great deal of success in the second half of last season, everyone involved with the club had forgotten the bitter taste of defeat.

Even after spending big in the summer transfer window, as the season has progressed, the Reds have suffered decisive injuries to upset the squad. Critics were quick to condemn a demise for the Reds over the festive period after a slump in form, with Rodgers job surprisingly being question by many.

But, through condemnation and anger, ironically it is Rodgers men that have boasted the impressive form over the busy Christmas and New Year period, albeit with a rather kind fixture list assisting this.

Settled team

It’s no coincidence that Liverpool’s upturn in form has arrived at a time when Rodgers finally seems to have found his best team and settled with a system that gets the best out of his players. Though dealing with heavy criticism, the character loving Irishman has morphed his players into a 3-4-2-1 formation that enables them to play with the creativity and intensity they have lacked since last season.

SUNDERLAND, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 10, 2015: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva clashes with Sunderland's Santiago Vergini during the Premier League match at the Stadium of Light. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It is also no coincidence that the Reds solid run has emerged with the inclusion of Lucas Leiva in the team. In a football world consumed by stats, the involvement of the Brazilian has proven to be pivotal in Liverpool’s run. The one game in which the Reds have lost in their last thirteen has been the one that the defensive midfielder wasn’t involved in (at Old Trafford).

Not sporting the characteristic Brazilian inheritance of flair and pace, Lucas’ performances often go under the radar of fans and unmistakably the media. His assurance and willingness to dig deep for the team allows the flamboyant of the team to do what they do best.

In the 10 games Liverpool has played without Lucas, the Reds have managed only a mere 8 points from a possible 30. After receiving such heavy criticism throughout his Anfield career, the 28-year-olds importance to the team comes as a revelation.

Finding their feet

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho in action against Bournemouth during the Football League Cup 5th Round match at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After an irresponsible walkout before the Merseyside Derby in November, Mamadou Sakho has forced his way back into the starting 11 and firmly established his spot in the newly implemented formation. The odd miss-control and eager tackle aside, the Frenchman has looked solid on the left side of the defence with six straight starts in the team.

Emre Can’s assertiveness has no doubt calmed the back three, reducing the pressure and anxiety that has been previously asserted on Liverpool’s defence in recent times. Originally signed as a midfielder, the versatile German has demonstrated to his boss that he can be used across the field by recently operating on the right side of the back three.

In an unorthodox wing-back position, Lazar Markovic has begun to excel and show how patience can ultimately recompense. Although an attack-minded midfielder at heart, the young Serbian does not shy away from the mandatory defensive duties needed as a wing-back. An extremely talented 20-year-old may finally be adapting to life in a new country and will only continue to improve.

BOURNEMOUTH, ENGLAND - Wednesday, December 17, 2014: Liverpool's Lazar Markovic celebrates scoring the second goal against Bournemouth during the Football League Cup 5th Round match at Dean Court. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

And finally, Liverpool’s little magician. Subsequent to an impressive pre-season, Philippe Coutinho failed to continue to step up to the plate in the Premier League. The number 10 was tried and tested in different positions in numerous formations but had little impact on games.

Ultimately, Coutinho has found his feet and appears to be thriving in his new role in this fresh system. The young Brazilian is back to bullying the opposition with his trickery, quick feet and audacious passing – a vision Liverpool fans have waited patiently for.

Five points off Arsene Wenger’s trophy (fourth spot of course), a semi-final showdown with Chelsea in the League Cup, 4th round of the FA Cup and the last 32 of the Europa League – Liverpool’s season has not been the catastrophe that many have depicted.

Although the magnitude of results is not expressing Liverpool’s dominance in games, the Reds are quietly adding to their Premier League tally. Winning games is the first stride; increasing goal difference is subsequent and will no doubt improve with time.

Maybe, just maybe, 2015 will show an upturn in fortune for the Reds.

Sakho, Lucas, Can and Coutinho key to Liverpool’s upturn in form as 2015 begins brightly

Bye Bye Suso!

~By Axello

Another prospect talent yang meninggalkan Anfield sebelum mencapai potensi sebenar.

At least 8-10 juta is a tag price.

Takut nanti jadi macam Chelsea buy back Matic 25juta dan Utd struggle nak Pogba 72juta. Matic berbeza kerana ia adalah apart of deal mendapatkan David Luiz dan Chelsea make a good deal, jual Luiz dan beli balik Matic.

Suso?

Di peringkat kelab pun dia gagal menempatkan diri, janga kata First 11, first 15 man squad pun sukar. Kenapa?

1. Coutinho-Sterling.

Suso asalah pure no.10. Sementara Sterling pada musim lepas hampir menyebabkan Coutinho lack of game.

2. Good player but not marquee player.

Perkembangan dan peak terlalu awal 2 pemain ini menjadikan Suso sentiasa not the first team player.

3. Tactical Consideration.

Perkembangan awal Suso agak terbantut. Rafa Benitez memang good talent searcher tapi Rafa memang bukan jurulatih yg berani menggunakan pemain muda.

Perkembangan mereka terhad.

Mungkin ia sedikit mengurangkan squad depth tapi Saya nak suso berjaya menembusi skuad kebangsaan Spain yg menjadi idaman beliau. They are good player.

Ini adalah simple guide pemain di posisi

Suso, Shelvey dam Kelly

Flanagan , Manquillo

Henderson Can

Pc- Sterling

- Mark Lawrensen

Juventus have confirmed a move to sign Mario Balotelli, according to a report in The Times.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 27, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli applauds the supporters as he is substituted against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The report, written by respected journalists Gary Jacob and Tony Barrett (the Liverpool correspondent) carries quotes from Juve boss Massimo Allegri – who coached Balotelli at AC Milan before his move to Anfield in the summer.

“We would like to recruit him, but we do not know if it’s possible,” Allegri is quoted as saying. “Mario had a good season with me. Unfortunately he’s built up a character outside the world of football and everyone talks about what he does off the pitch. All coaches love to lead the best players.”

Balotelli, who has found himself as a peripheral figure since returning from injury last month, is yet to score a Premier League goal for the club. In his 18 appearances (11 starts) his two goals have arrived against Ludogorets (Champions League) and Swansea City (League Cup).

The Times‘ report claims Juve could be interested in an initial loan move for the 24-year-old Italian.

Allegri’s interest in Balotelli was also reported in Italian publications over the weekend.

Balotelli was also linked with a loan move to PSG over the weekend.

With Lucas Leiva linked with an exit, and Fabian Delph reportedly a Liverpool target, Jack Lusby compares the two as defensive midfielders.

Is Lucas Leiva set for a January exit from Liverpool, and is Fabian Delph the right man to replace the Brazilian?

According to reports on Saturday, “Inter Milan are ready to offer £7million to prise Lucas away from Liverpool.”

“While Lucas, 28, has become a regular starter at Anfield again, the Reds will consider the offer.”

The Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce reported on Sunday that “the Reds have yet to receive a bid from Inter” – signs point towards a January exit for the midfielder.

Brendan Rodgers conceded that Lucas wouldn’t leave the club on loan, but failed to rule out a permanent move, then a post-match tweet from the midfielder himself seemed to indicate an impending close to a long-running spell on Merseyside.

And with Aston Villa midfielder Delph linked with a move to Merseyside, it would suggest that, if Lucas were to leave, the 25-year-old would serve as his replacement.

Delph has been a long-reported target for Liverpool but, given Lucas’ recent resurgence and Delph’s stop-start 2014/15 season so far, perhaps it is sensible to consider whether he is a true upgrade.

Lucas’ Role

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Tuesday, October 28, 2014: Liverpool's Lucas Leiva in action against Swansea City's Nathan Dyer during the Football League Cup 4th Round match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Lucas has helped Liverpool spur into life as we enter the second half of the season after a personal resurrection under Rodgers in recent weeks.

Lucas has now played 11 Premier League games for the Reds this season, establishing a regular spot as Liverpool’s midfield anchor.

Since his introduction to the side for November’s 1-0 victory at home to Stoke City, Lucas has started in all but one of Liverpool’s league games, completing the full 90 in six out of eight appearances.

Remarkably, during that run Liverpool have not lost a game, with Lucas helping the side to five wins and three draws.

Further underlining his influence, the one game Lucas did sit out of in that run Liverpool lost—in December’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

A simple, but crucial, job, Lucas’ deployment in midfield provides stability and assurance.

A stand-out performance in Saturday’s 1-0 victory away to Sunderland is the perfect crystallisation:

Typically situated in a deep-lying role, Lucas broke up play with efficiency and physicality, making six tackles and two interceptions.

Furthermore, Lucas was a diligent outlet in possession, keeping things simple when required, but also showcasing an attacking impetus, with a 90.2 per cent passing accuracy and one key pass.

While most of Lucas’ play was in Liverpool’s half, the midfielder did aid the his side’s pressing play in Sunderland territory, helping to defend from the front:

Lucas Tackles Sunderland

Lucas’ duty in midfield is clear, and his effect on the side’s overall performance can be starkly underlined in terms of goals conceded with and without the midfielder.

This season, Lucas has been a consistent player for the Reds, making 3.8 tackles and 2.1 interceptions on average per game, while 0.5 key passes showcases his rare adventurous element.

While it can be argued that there is an ultimate upgrade on Lucas for Liverpool, with fantasies of Morgan Schneiderlin perhaps wide of the mark given Southampton’s continued excellence this season, whether or not the player in question can be Delph is another matter entirely.

Fabian Delph

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, January 18, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa's Fabian Delph during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Impacted by injury this season, Delph’s 2014/15 has seen the midfielder make 11 appearances in the Premier League, allowing for the perfect comparison with Lucas.

Delph is an all-action, box-to-box midfielder, as evidenced by an outstanding display as part of Roy Hodgson’s midfield in England’s 2-0 September victory over Switzerland.

As evidenced by the data presented below, Delph is a significantly less prolific defensive charge—although this may well be due to his being fielded in a different position to Lucas, which is another glaring issue in itself.

Lucas vs Delph

Delph does top Lucas in the attacking sector, but that is not the job he would be required to do in replacing him at Liverpool.

Far from it is Delph a poor player, and if moving to Liverpool in January or summer, the midfielder would fit in well with Rodgers’ hard-working squad.

But replacing Lucas, Liverpool’s only specialist defensive midfielder, with Delph would be an oversight by the manager.

The player Delph more closely resembles is the ghostly Joe Allen (currently sidelined through injury) who boasts a similar work rate and eagerness to move play forward on the ball.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, August 17, 2014: Liverpool's Joe Allen in action against Southampton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Delph vs Allen

If Lucas does say farewell to the club after a long stay this January, Allen would be equally as capable of filling his role as Delph would — but neither are an upgrade on Lucas’ sheer defensive diligence.

By all means, Liverpool should sign Delph, but replacing Lucas with the Villa man would fail to recognise the Brazilian’s influence; and this ignore other factors, such as his experience and dressing room presence.

As comparison shows, Delph would not be able to produce the same defensive quality as Lucas does under Rodgers at Liverpool; if the midfielder leaves in January, a specialist defensive midfielder must be signed in his place.

Liverpool FC boss Brendan Rodgers is convinced the return of Raheem Sterling will give his side lift-off as they look to push for a European place in the second half of the Barclays Premier League season.

Sterling missed Liverpool's 1-0 win at Sunderland on Saturday after being rewarded for his tireless contribution over the Christmas period with a two-week break in the Caribbean.

But Rodgers believes the 20-year-old's scheduled comeback against Aston Villa next weekend will coincide with the start of a run-in which will end frustration over the Reds' relatively inconsistent start to the campaign.

Rodgers said: "I felt if we are going to get the best out of Raheem he is going to need a little bit of a rest and he will come back next week.

"The exciting thing is we have always been better in the second half of the season and that is the business end.

"We will get Raheem back fresh and (Daniel) Sturridge back fresh and we also have Adam Lallana to come back – so it is going the way I hoped it would."

A ninth minute goal from Lazar Markovic proved enough for Rodgers' men to win a largely forgettable encounter with the ailing Black Cats, whose woe was heightened by the 49th minute sending-off of Liam Bridcutt for two bookable offences.

Markovic almost added to his clinical opener when he fired another first half effort against the crossbar from long range, but Sunderland briefly rallied after the red card and Adam Johnson's rising 25-yard effort also struck the bar.

Markovic's impressive performance was another tonic for Rodgers who can see the return of his big names being backed up by the increasing confident performances of his new squad members.

"Lazar has been very, very good for us in the last six or seven weeks so it is just taking time," added Rodgers.

"Emre Can and Alberto Moreno have also taken time coming to a new country with a big spotlight on them because of what we did last year, but now they are starting to settle into the philosophy of how we play." PA
