There have been some majestic efforts by Reds players since the Premier League began in 1992, and Henry Jackson (@OnFootballTweet) picks his five best over the last 21 years. What would be your number 1?

HULL, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 1, 2013: Liverpool's Luis Suarez takes a free-kick against Hull City during the Premiership match at the KC Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

5. STEVEN GERRARD vs Aston Villa- 2007

Liverpool’s opening game of the 2007/08 season was heading towards a frustrating draw away to Aston Villa, with the game in its dying moments.

Gerrard, so often the club’s talisman, produced a moment of individual brilliance, curling a sensational effort into the top corner to send the travelling fans into delirium.

4. PATRIK BERGER vs Man Utd- 2000

Danny Murphy would score an excellent winning free-kick at Old Trafford nine months after this, but Berger’s effort was even better.

The Czech Republic star rifled an thunderous effort past Raimond van der Gouw at the Stretford End, from all of 30 yards, to give the Reds the lead. Although they would end up drawing the game 1-1, it was still an unforgettable moment from the former Liverpool hero.

3. FABIO AURELIO vs Man Utd- 2009

A huge match at Old Trafford back in 2009 was a must-win game for Rafa Benitez’s side. Fernando Torres and Gerrard had overturned an early deficit, before Aurelio’s moment of inspiration.

Nemanja Vidic had just been sent off for hauling down Gerrard, and from the resulting free-kick the Brazilian left-back bent a wonderful effort past the motionless Edwin van der Sar.

Liverpool went on to win 4-1 to reignite their title challenge, and Aurelio’s goal was the moment of the match.

2. GARY MCALLISTER vs Everton- 2001

McAllister’s sensational strike remains arguably the most dramatic Merseyside derby moment of the last 20 years.

With the scores level at 2-2 at Goodison Park, deep into stoppage time, Liverpool won a free-kick 35 yards from goal. Many thought McAllister would just dink the ball into the box, but the Scot outrageously went for goal, curling the ball into Paul Gerrard’s near post.

It was a huge victory in Liverpool’s quest for Champions League football that season, and McAllister became a Liverpool legend in the process.

1. JON ARNE RIISE vs Man Utd- 2001

On 4th November 2001, Jon Arne Riise scored the greatest free-kick by a Liverpool player, in my opinion. The fact that it was against United made it even sweeter.

Michael Owen had given the Reds the lead at Anfield, before they were awarded a free-kick on the corner of the Anfield Road penalty area.

The ball was laid off to Riise by Didi Hamann, and the young Norwegian thundered a sensational shot past Fabian Barthez, sending Anfield wild. The stunning effort helped Liverpool to a superb 3-1 victory on the day.

What’s your favourite free-kick by a Liverpool player? Who has Henry missed?

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard says his side are now genuine title contenders in the football betting best odds and believes Luis Suarez is currently the most talented player in the world.

HULL, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 1, 2013: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the first goal against Hull City during the Premiership match at the KC Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The skipper missed out on Sunday’s 5-0 victory away at Tottenham, a win that moved the Reds to within of two points of leaders Arsenal as Brendan Rodgers’ men continued their fine start to the season.

After Liverpool’s strong finish to last term, a top four place was seen by the Anfield faithful as a realistic target but Gerrard believes his team are now capable go going even further.

“Of course we are a title contender,” Gerrard is quoted as saying in the Mirror. “There’s still a long way to go – a lot of big games and hurdles to come. We will take a lot of belief from this.”

One of the main reasons for Liverpool’s strong first half of the campaign has been the form of Luis Suarez who after missing the opening months of the season due to suspension, has gone on to net 17 goals in his 11 league appearances.

Two of these came in the win at White Hart Lane, a game in which he was handed the captain’s armband due to Gerrard’s absence with a hamstring injury and led with aplomb in what was arguably the Reds’ best performance under Brendan Rodgers.

The Uruguayan won the Football Supporters’ Federation award on Monday night and the skipper believes his teammate is currently the best player on the planet, as well as a crucial component of Liverpool pushing for a top four place.

“Luis is key to that (Liverpool’s Champions League ambitions)” he said. “On current form Luis Suarez is the best player in the world at the moment. If he keeps playing like that there’s no doubt we’ll finish in the top four. That’s what Luis wants.”

Jon Flanagan’s performance in the 5-0 demolition of Spurs on Sunday has seen supporters jokingly refer to him as the Scouse Roberto Carlos – but, being a right-footed player at left-back the comparison should more be with Philip Lahm.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Jon Flanagan celebrates scoring the third goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The man who has been involved in “Flanno” returning to the first-team, Rob Jones, believes the 20 year-old local lad could solve the problematic position for years to come.

“Grasping opportunity is what professional football is all about” Jones told 5Times.co . “The way he is playing, Brendan will have a tough call when Jose Enrique is fit, and who knows – Jon Flanagan could be Liverpool’s first-choice left back for the next few seasons.”

Jones knows what it’s like for a right-back to transition to the left side, having done so himself during his time at Liverpool:

“People presume it must be a fairly easy transition as a full back to play on the right and the left but it’s not, it can be like doing things in reverse and as a right-footer you prefer to tackle with your right foot so the things you do naturally need a little bit of thought.

“I’m just really impressed by his improving maturity, his first touch is brilliant, his passing is great and his defending has been superb.”

Jones recently returned to being involved at the club, after being asked to come in and help with the under 18s and 21s players – working with the defenders to provide advice to them.

“I am really enjoying being back at the club, I was made up to get the call from Brendan” Jones said.

“Coaching isn’t our remit, more talking to players and helping out where needed. Steve McManaman helps with the team and the midfield, Robbie [Fowler] with the strikers and I think the youngsters have enjoyed having us there.”

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre is in Barcelona for talks with Luis Suarez‘s agent Pere Guardiola, according to Andy Hunter of the Guardian.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 15, 2013: Liverpool's Luis Suarez celebrates scoring the fourth goal against Tottenham Hotspur during the Premiership match at White Hart Lane. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Hunter writes in Wednesday morning’s newspaper:

The Anfield club’s managing director, Ian Ayre, flew to Barcelona on Tuesday for preliminary negotiations with Pere Guardiola, the agent involved in the striker’s dispute with Liverpool over the terms in his existing deal when Arsenal tried to sign him in the summer.

The stunning form of Suarez has urged the club to act quickly in trying to tie up the Uruguayan international into a new long-term deal.

Suarez still has two and a half years remaining on his current deal, and it is likely any new contract would include clauses to allow him to leave, should Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League.

In the summer, Suarez claimed Liverpool had gone back on a promise to allow him to leave Anfield should they not qualify for UEFA’s elite competition—which they failed to do.

Both Arsenal and Real Madrid were said to be interested in signing the Liverpool forward.

Since Suarez’s return from a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Invanovic in April, he has scored 17 goals in 11 starts for the Reds this season.

However, Hunter warns that Liverpool will have to put their money where their mouth is if they hope to sign the 26-year-old up to a new deal and fend off interest from Europe’s top clubs. He adds:

There was no official contract offer put to Guardiola by Ayre. Their meeting was merely the start of what could prove a protracted process, with the brother of the Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola well aware of how highly Suárez’s stock has risen this season. Real Madrid were interested in the 26-year-old in the summer but did not lodge an official bid, although they are expected to again be among Suárez’s suitors at the end of this campaign.

Last night Suarez picked up the Football Supporters’ Federation Player of the Year award at a ceremony at Arsenal’s Emirate’s Stadium.

On accepting the award, he thanked Liverpool fans for their support in welcoming him back this season, despite a bad year.

“After so many difficult moments for me I was able to win the supporters back,” he was quoted by Sporting Life as saying. “And that was unbelievable when I came back to play.

“They helped me, and that was important for me, for my confidence, and for my family, because they are together with me in this.

“It’s very special for me (the award) because my hard work on the pitch is recognised.

“Everybody knows about my problems and my difficult year, but after that I forgot everything and have been able to get back on the pitch.”

Fabio Borini scored an 88th minute equaliser for Sunderland, who he is on-loan to from Liverpool for the season, against Chelsea in the League Cup Quarter-Final on Tuesday night.

Goal Borini – Sunderland 1-1 Chelsea – 17-12… by all-goals-Highlights

Chelsea had lead from early in the second half when Lee Cattermole bundled the ball into his own net, with goal-line technology playing a part in deciding it was a goal:

Goal Lampard – Sunderland 0-1 Chelsea – 17-12… by all-goals-Highlights

Borini, who was a 74th minute substitute for Adam Johnson, then turned provider to set up Ki Sung-Yueng for Sunderland’s winner in the 118th minute and knock Jose Mourinho’s side out of the competition.

The goal was Borini’s second for the Black Cats, after scoring a stunning goal against Newcastle in October.

Borini was signed from Roma in July 2012, having had previous spells at Chelsea and Swansea but has made just 20 first-team appearances for Liverpool, scoring twice.

Despite the 22-year-old being sent on-loan to Sunderland for the season, Brendan Rodgers last month insisted he has a bright future at Anfield.

“Fabio is a young player who has been unfortunate,” Rodgers was quoted in the Metro as saying. “He got injured early on and was out for a period of time. That first year for a lot of players at a big club is difficult.

“He was a player who I felt needed games. He’s got talent and you saw that with his goal the other day [against Newcastle].

“I just felt this year, with us having limited games, that I had players, especially the young ones, who weren’t going to play so much. I needed to plan forward in order to get these players to maximise their potential for Liverpool.

“Sometimes that will mean going out and getting games. And with the likes of Fabio that’s why he’s gone to Sunderland.

“He’s definitely got a future here. He’s a talented young player and one who, over the next few years, will hopefully develop well.”
