Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has shrugged off criticism aimed at him and insists he does not dwell on individual performances whether they are good or bad.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, October 22, 2014: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in action against Real Madrid CF during the UEFA Champions League Group B match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Belgium international came under even more scrutiny after an error in the midweek Champions League tie but responded with only his third clean sheet in 25 appearances in the scrappy 1-0 win over Stoke.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar this week blamed him for the club's poor start to the campaign, criticising his inability to deal with crosses or command his area, but it has not even registered with Mignolet.

"I deal with a good performance the same as a poor performance – you have to accept it and move on," he told Press Association Sport after Liverpool ended a three-match losing run in the league.

"What I did after the (Ludogorets) game was look forward to the next game and that is what I will do again today.

"It is always pleasing as a goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet but the most important thing is to get back to winning ways and hopefully we can build a bit of momentum now.

"If you play at home you want to win games and we did the job and that is all that counts.

"There is another game on Tuesday (against bottom side Leicester) and we will look forward to that one."

After an instantly forgettable first half which saw Liverpool lack any semblance of cutting edge or even an idea of how they were to break down Stoke they improved after the break.

However, Jordan Henderson, standing in for the rested Steven Gerrard as captain, Raheem Sterling, Lucas Leiva and Rickie Lambert all had decent chances to score, but it was only after the visitors had hit the post through Bojan Krkic and Mignolet had produced a brilliant close-range block to deny Biram Mame Diouf that the winner came – from the most unlikely of sources.

Henderson swung in a cross for Lambert to head over goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and back off the crossbar and right-back Glen Johnson was quickest to react with a low diving header to bundle the ball over the line with five minutes remaining.

Liverpool survived a nervous seven minutes of stoppage time to record only their third clean sheet of the season in a defence which saw one change from the midweek Champions League draw with Jose Enrique in at left-back, allowing Johnson to switch to his preferred right with Javier Manquillo the one to miss out.

That meant a first league start since February 12 for Kolo Toure, who had impressed at centre-back in the last two European matches.

"He has got the experience. He has played throughout the years and he knows what he is capable of doing," Mignolet said of the 33-year-old Ivorian.

"He can help the team and organise them so we know what to expect from him and he works his socks off every day in training and is always ready when the gaffer needs him."

Despite playing behind another changed back four Mignolet said it made no difference to him.

"We are professional football players so we have to deal with that," he added.

"You train with all the lads in training every single day so you know what they can do and you know what their capabilities are."

s i n e r g i - pelajaran penting buat sterling.

Liverpool supporters groups Spirit of Shankly and Spion Kop 1906 took the decision not to take any of their flags and banners into Anfield for the match against Stoke on Saturday as part of their ongoing protest against ticket prices.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 29, 2014: Liverpool fans' protest against ticket prices 'Let Me Tell You A Story Of A Poor Boy' during the Premier League match against Stoke City at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The two groups are, at the least, seeking engagement with the football club and owner John W. Henry. They have written this very pertinent letter to Henry:

Dear John W Henry,

You may already be aware, but in case it escaped your attention, there was a visible demonstration today which was focused on rising, and already expensive, ticket prices. However unlike the Black Flags protest at home to Hull City, we revealed a glimpse of the future – a normal Kop. Instead of the usual pre-match flags and banners, a tradition of supporters and the Kop, there was nothing. No surfer. No flags celebrating triumphs. No wavers celebrating club legends. No colour. No ceremony.

This isn’t merely a withdrawal of our ‘support’. It’s because we support the team and this football club so much that we persist in protesting. No, this is something much bigger. It is a warning of what is to come. Not because the support won’t be forthcoming but because the support will be priced out. The tipping point for many is approaching and for others it has been and gone. Supporters who face the heartbreaking decision to walk away and stop attending agonise over it so much because they know once they have taken that step, there is no going back. Until we get proper and direct engagement from yourself and the club on this issue, the flags and wavers will remain furled and unwaved.

We don’t do this just for ourselves. This is not merely self preservation. It’s about the long term future of our support, our culture and our traditions. As our current owners and custodians you have a responsibility, a very significant one, to preserve and safeguard the future of this football club. This does not just exist on a spreadsheet under profit and loss – it is about the future of our support and ensuring that the things that have made the club famous and successful in the past continue into the future. The current generation of support face being priced out, so how can we expect a future generation to take their place? It leaves us asking a worrying question – just what will our support be like in the next five, ten or fifteen years?

It’s with the importance of such questions hanging over us that we come to you direct. We are not asking you to find the silver bullet or expecting you to wave a magic wand. All we ask is that you meet with both organisations, and begin a conversation that will see us working together to develop solutions to the problem of ticket price increases. It is an opportunity for us, as a football club to lead the way again. To help show how the whole of football can tackle this growing problem.

If we do not begin to tackle this now, the question we will be forced to ask ourselves is:

Just what is important to OUR football club – the colour of our flags or the colour of our money?

We look forward to hearing from you soon

Spirit of Shankly & Spion Kop 1906

With a huge Champions League match against Basel coming up in less than a fortnight, the sight of the Kop minus it’s famed flags and banners is a bleak prospect and one which FSG must avoid.

Perhaps if more Premier League clubs supporters were as willing to protest against the rising price of Premier League football, more clubs would be forced to take action and costs lower across the country.

Similarly, if Liverpool were the first club to lower ticket prices, others may be forced to follow suit.

Apathy among fans over the cost of football needs to end before a generation are priced out.

Raheem Sterling ! Philippe Coutiho !

No More boleh dilakukan .

Brendan Rodgers was pleased with side’s performance in their 1-0 win over Stoke City at Anfield on Saturday. Watch his pre-match press conference below.

The Reds were much improved in the second half and Rodgers admitted his side needed to up the tempo after a slower first half.

On the decision to rest Steven Gerrard, Rodgers admitted he was unaware it was 16 years since the captain made his debut until he saw the programme in the changing room.

“He’s at the point in his career where he’s not going to be playing every game” explained Rodgers.

“We can’t just be relying upon Steven in every game.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had no idea it was the 16th anniversary of Steven Gerrard‘s debut and felt bad leaving him out of the team for the 1-0 win over Stoke.

However, the captain was on the pitch when the winner was scored by Glen Johnson five minutes from time to end a three-match losing streak in the Premier League.

“I wasn’t aware it was 16 years until I walked into the dressing room and saw the programme,” said the Reds boss. “I spoke to him yesterday and he didn’t mention it so I felt bad when I saw about 20 pictures on the programme.

“Steven is in a part of his career when he is not going to play every minute of every game.

“He played Palace and he played Ludogorets when he was outstanding and put in a huge amount of effort, and we have other players here who can come in and do a job and Steven understands that.

“I need to look at each game. We have good players that are fresh. He came on and gave a great contribution towards the end and his experience and stature in the game helped us at that point, but I thought the team overall was excellent.”

Gerrard’s contract expires at the end of this season and the 34-year-old has said he is not yet prepared to hang up his boots, like close friend Jamie Carragher did the season before last.

But with questions being asked about how much longer Gerrard can be effective at the highest level, a new deal may not be as straightforward as it once was.

“Not that I am aware of,” was Rodgers’ response when asked whether there had been any progress on a new contract.

“I think the club is talking with Steven’s representatives so there is no update on that.”

After a turgid first half performance the Reds improved after the break, but it took Johnson’s diving header after Rickie Lambert’s header had bounced down off the crossbar to finally break the deadlock.

But Liverpool were also indebted to goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, whose high-profile blunder in midweek against Ludogorets only increased the spotlight on him after some indifferent performances.

The Belgian made one brilliant close-range save to deny Mame Biram Diouf just before Johnson struck while Bojan Krkic also hit a post. “He has made a couple of great saves. We asked him to simplify his game and do what he is good at, which is shot-stopping,” said Rodgers.

“He came for a couple of crosses at the end when the pressure was on and he made a couple of great saves, and I am very pleased for him as he is a very good guy who is working hard at his game.”

Stoke boss Mark Hughes was deflated he could not break the Potters’ woeful run at Anfield, where they have not won a top-flight match in 51 attempts and last scored in 1983. “We feel a little bit disappointed. We put a huge effort in,” he said.

“Our record here hasn’t been great. We thought this was a real opportunity to wipe the slate clean and get a positive result.

“In the first half Liverpool created very little. In the second half it became more open because we were looking for a winner.”

Liverpool edged past Stoke City courtesy of Glen Johnson’s late winner, their first league win since mid October at QPR.

It was the cliched game of two halves for Brendan Rodgers‘ side – who were much improved in the second half after a poor opening 45 minutes which saw neither side with a shot on target.

Simon Mignolet: 7

A much improved performance from the under fire keeper; making multiple saves late on, one an excellent finger tip over the bar as Stoke pushed for an equaliser. Also collected a corner late on – much to the applause of Anfield.

Glen Johnson: 6.5

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 29, 2014: Liverpool's Glen Johnson scores the first goal against Stoke City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Awarded a 7 merely for his credible and brave headed goal, showing commitment to the cause not seen from the 30-year-old in a long time. There was a more typical Johnson moment in the first half when he heart heartedly attempted to dribble past a Stoke forward on the edge of the box, failing woefully and being easily pushed off the ball.

Martin Skrtel: 6.5

A solid display but not greatly troubled all afternoon. Again looks far more assured with Toure alongside him rather than Lovren.

Kolo Toure: 7

Adds a leading presence so the Liverpool defence so often lacking of late. Assured, comfortable in possession and easily Liverpool’s best defender on current form.

Jose Enrique: 6

Recalled for the first time since a pretty awful performance at QPR, Enrique didn’t venture forward much and played his usually predictable diagonal balls and passes down the line, rarely did they come off.

Jordan Henderson: 6

Energetic and admirable, but it’s not quite working for Hendo at the moment.

Lucas Leiva: 6.5

Won tackles, broke up play and looked comfortable as Liverpool’s defensive midfielder. Should have scored when Liverpool broke with 5 vs 3 midway through the second half but his shot was too close to Begovic and comfortably saved.

Joe Allen: 6

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 29, 2014: Liverpool's Kolo Toure and Joe Allen challenge Stoke City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

A tidy performance but was deployed very deep alongside Lucas almost like two defensive midfielders during the first half especially. Should have scored when his shot from close range clipped the top of the bar. Moved into defensive midfield role after Gerrard’s introduction and looked at home. Won more tackles than any other Liverpool player (4).

Raheem Sterling: 7

By far Liverpool’s biggest attacking threat, again. His pace caused Stoke problems but often there was nobody to profit from him. Tried hard to link up with Coutinho but it just didn’t quite click. Beat

Philippe Coutinho: 6

Tried hard and almost scored a superb goal after a typical mazy run from the centre in the first half but was crowded out with little support. Withdrawn late on.

Rickie Lambert: 6

Held the ball up well but still seems to be struggling with life at Liverpool in home games. He had a good chance in the second half but his shot was low and weak, easily saved by Begovic. Three full games in a week for the 32-year-old and he seems to be benefitting from playing regularly.

Subs:

Steven Gerrard: n/a (for Lucas, 75)

The skipper replaced Lucas with 15 minutes to go as Liverpool shifted from 4-4-1-1 to 4-3-3. Gerrard operated in one of the two more advanced midfield roles, with Allen at the base of the three.

Dejan Lovren: n/a (for Coutinho, 86)

Rodgers was preparing to bring on Adam Lallana just before Johnson’s goal. He changed that to introduce Lovren instead, going to five at the back.

Brendan Rodgers: Was pleased with Liverpool's determination

Brendan Rodgers: Was pleased with Liverpool's determination

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hailed his side's persistence as they battled to a 1-0 victory over Stoke to end their miserable run.

Glen Johnson’s late header gave the Reds their first victory in all competitions in November, ending a run of three straight Premier League defeats.

It was a cagey affair at Anfield with no shots on target in a drab opening 45 minutes, but it was a much-improved match after the break which saw plenty of chances before Johnson’s vital winner.

"Absolutely I thought [we deserved to win]," said Rodgers. "It was obviously a difficult game. Stoke don’t concede many goals - they’ve got outstanding players.

"Mark [Hughes] has done an excellent job since he’s gone in there. They’ve got quality in their team so we knew it was going to be a test, but I thought we thoroughly deserved the win.

"We had to be persistent today and keep going. In the second half, the speed of our game was better - we were able to express ourselves a little bit more after a solid first half."

Rodgers' men have league fixtures against strugglers Leicester and Sunderland before a vital Champions League encounter with Basel, where a win will see them through to the last 16.

Confidence

The Liverpool boss admitted his side have not matched the standards set last season, but feels Saturday’s hard-fought victory over the Potters could prove to be a watershed moment.

"We haven’t been playing at our best this season," Rodgers added. "There are a handful of occasions, if even that, when we’ve been really fluent.

"For us, it was just about getting the confidence back in the group. We haven’t been good enough in our performances, but they’ve shown in the last couple of games that determination and being competitive is what this group is about.

"Sometimes, to go on a really good run like we’ve done over the course of 18 months, you have to start with solid victories and today was a solid victory. We had that in the first game of last season against Stoke when we won 1-0, so we’re hoping that again, our season is starting with that.

"There’s still a long way to go, but today was a very important three points for us."

Lambert's header led to Johnson's winner

Lambert's header led to Johnson's winner

Liverpool ended a run of three straight Premier League defeats as Glen Johnson’s late header gave them a 1-0 win over Stoke after a nervy encounter at Anfield on Saturday.

Johnson reacted quickest to a Rickie Lambert header which hit the bar, after the visitors went close on numerous occasions, with Bojan Krkic hitting the post and Mame Biram Diouf denied by Raheem Sterling’s clearance.

After a drab opening 45 minutes, the game opened up massively and both sides spurned some superb opportunities. Lucas and Joe Allen both missed chances inside the box, while Bojan drew a spectacular stop from Simon Mignolet in stoppage time.

But the hosts held off some late Stoke pressure to record their first win in November and alleviate some of the pressure mounting on Brendan Rodgers.

Rodgers rested captain Steven Gerrard on the 16th anniversary of his debut for the club, with Philippe Coutinho coming in, while Kolo Toure was given the nod ahead of Dejan Lovren in central defence and Jose Enrique started in place of Alberto Moreno.

Stoke, meanwhile, were without Victor Moses after the winger was injured against Burnley, so Marko Arnautovic filled in on the left wing. Mark Hughes also made two changes at the back, with Marc Wilson and Erik Pieters coming in.

The crowd were left frustrated in the opening 45 minutes as Liverpool failed to impose themselves in the middle of the park, even after Stoke had to withdraw Steve Sidwell early on, with the midfielder failing to recover from a 50-50 challenge with Rickie Lambert.

Glenn Whelan, who replaced the injured Sidwell, had to be withdrawn himself at the break and Charlie Adam was introduced against his former club. The midfielder almost had an effect straight away, but at the wrong end as he gave the ball straight to Sterling before recovering to cut out his pass for Lambert.

Moments later Henderson, who was captain in place of Gerrard, drilled a volley inches wide as Liverpool started to find their feet.

Rodgers’ men were almost caught out at the other end as Bojan found Diouf in behind and, with Mignolet electing not to come out, the striker tested the goalkeeper for the first time in the match, forcing a low save from the Liverpool shot-stopper.

Things continued to open up, and Bojan flew in from the left before drilling a shot against the near post, then moments later Sterling dragged a left-footed effort inches wide.

Sterling was involved again as he intercepted Arnautovic’s pass and Liverpool momentarily had five against three. The winger played in Lucas, but the Brazilian’s lack of goals shone through as he drilled his shot straight at Begovic.

Allen then spooned a close-range shot over after some neat play from Coutinho and Sterling as the hosts just couldn’t find the back of the net, while Stoke looked like they would rue their missed chances.

Mark Hughes must have thought it wouldn’t be his side’s day when a corner fell to Diouf six yards out, but his shot on the turn was blocked on the line by Sterling.

Just a couple of minutes later the deadlock was finally broken, and Gerrard was inevitably involved in the build-up. The midfielder’s cross was met by Lambert, who powered a header against the crossbar and Johnson reacted quickest, charging in to head the ball low into the net.

It was a huge blow for Stoke, who would have felt they could have taken all three points, but they couldn’t get back on level terms despite some late pressure inside the Liverpool half.

Liverpool 1-0 Stoke City

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, November 29, 2014: Liverpool's Kolo Toure and Joe Allen challenge Stoke City during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It was 16 years to the day since Steven Gerrard made his Liverpool debut, but, after two 90 minutes games already this week, Brendan Rodgers finally dropped his captain for a Premier League game for the first time this season.

Gerrard joined £87 million of summer signings on the bench, as Rodgers kept Kolo Toure and Lucas in the side from midweek and brought in Jose Enrique at left back with Glen Johnson moving to right back.

The first half was a myriad of poor play, crosses across the box to nobody and a very poor tempo to the game.

Two of the last three meetings between these two sides at Anfield ended in 0-0 draws, and for long periods of this game it looked like being a third in four years.

Half time arrived and neither side had had a shot on target.

It was a first half devoid of attacking intent or creativity; a game that very much summed up the league table – 12th vs 13th, separated by one point and neither side with a win in each of their last four Premier League games.

Liverpool were much brighter in the opening to the second half, and Henderson almost opened the scoring shortly after the break but his volley hit the side netting at the Kop end.

It was Stoke who came closest to breaking the deadlock on the hour mark when Bojan’s shot smashed the post at Mignolet’s near post. Second later Sterling almost opened the scoring at the other end but his shot went across the face of goal.

Liverpool should have scored minutes later when they broke 5 vs 3, but the ball was played to Lucas (of all people) and his shot was saved by Begovic.

The home side were dominant and almost scored when Sterling’s cross teed up Allen but his shot hit the top of the bar from six yards out. Lambert had a low shot saved a minute earlier.

Liverpool finally made the breakthrough with 6 minutes remaining. Lambert’s header rebounded off the bar and Johnson bravely headed the ball in from 6 yards.

Rodgers shelved plans to bring on Adam Lallana and instead brought on Dejan Lovren to shut up shop.

Johnson was injured as he scored and that led to seven minutes added time, with Stoke pushing for an equaliser.

Mignolet made a superb finger tip save from Bojan and Liverpool held on for a much needed three points – their first Premier League win since QPR away in mid October.

Attendance: 44,735

Referee: Craig Pawson

Liverpool: Mignolet, Johnson, Skrtel, Toure, Enrique, Lucas (Gerrard 75), Allen, Henderson, Coutinho (Lovren 87), Sterling, Lambert.

Subs not used: Jones, Moreno, Lallana, Markovic, Can.
