Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels says he wanted Steven Gerrard to win the Premier League title last season with Liverpool.
Speaking of reported interested from Man United in signing him, Hummels said he admired players such as Gerrard who are one-club players.
“There are some [who stay at one club for their whole careers], and they are all really great players. Paolo Maldini of Milan, for example, or Steven Gerrard. I would have been so happy for him if he had won the championship with Liverpool.”
The German centre-back says he won’t move abroad for money, with United having spent huge money on Luke Shaw and Angel Di Maria this summer despite no European football on offer.
“If one day I start thinking about playing abroad, money won’t be the reason. I don’t even think about that at the moment. We still have so much further to go here.”

Everyone had their own preconceptions of Mario Balotelli, good or bad. But now he’s at Liverpool, we’ve got the freedom to judge based on what we see, writes Rebecca Parry.
The Liverpool setup should be an ideal situation for a player like him to thrive considering past upsets, and he’s now got to be aiming to give back as much as he’s getting – with goals.
So far, Balotelli’s only goal was just a glimpse of what we can expect from him, despite him being fairly quiet in the Ludogorets game in the whole.
But since then, and even before, Liverpool have failed to find their feet, and we certainly haven’t seen what we all know the team are capable of.
It’s been mentioned before, no more so than myself, that Daniel Sturridge’s absence has disrupted Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool system as a whole.
Balotelli seems to be sometimes drifting slightly deep and wide, with movement being halted in the side that conjured up so much free-flowing activity last year.
Going solo
It’s a difficult job being a solo striker, and you do appreciate that even more when you witness that at times it hasn’t quite clicked with Balotelli yet.
Although the results for Liverpool aren’t exactly encouraging at the moment, the Italian has not been blamed for the lack of goals.
Of course, players, and even more so, strikers, are going to be the one of the first ports of call when placing the blame if results aren’t going your way.
In a somewhat lucky case for Mario, there has been so much criticism and focus on the Liverpool defence at the moment, that the limelight has been taken off him slightly. What we didn’t want was for there to be immediate controversy to hinder individual and team progress.
Having said this, strikers with dry scoring spells are always going to be pressured. It was so important that Balotelli got off the mark in his first few games. Giving people an angle to add extra pressure isn’t good for anyone’s game, even for someone with his personality.
You only have to look back to the likes of Peter Crouch for us, and more recently Torres for Chelsea, where getting off to a good start is crucial, otherwise getting that first goal seems like such a distant target.
Balotelli is in the ideal place to flourish playing his football. Unlike other clubs, Liverpool fans do not and will not instantly get on a player’s back, especially if they’re putting in the work for the team.
Although not busting a gut like Jordan Henderson just yet, we have seen a lot more of him chasing down lost balls, and showing the signs of a team player. You only have to look back to the derby on Saturday of where if only he was gifted a little more luck, the chance that hit the bar could have been the back of the net.
“Transforming” the star
A lot of people talk about how Rodgers can “change” Balotelli in terms of how he behaves sometimes on the pitch. However, you don’t want to take the passion out of his game. In some ways, it’s similar to Luis Suarez: you know that he’s always going to have a bit of menace in him, and it’s how it’s channelled.
And this is also why Balotelli will look to contribute to what we’re trying to achieve at the moment, in getting back to how we were playing last season.
He’s got an array of exciting, pacey and creative players around him, who will hopefully slot together more effectively when Sturridge returns. Sturridge benefited from the offensive system with so many goals last year, and there’s no reason why Balotelli can’t take advantage either.

Liverpool's big-money recruit Mario Balotelli tops Whoscored.com's list of Premier League stars who are struggling to convert shots into goals.
At the start of any new season there's always one or two players that just hit the ground running. The main man this season is undoubtedly Diego Costa, with everything the new Chelsea striker touches seemingly turning to goals at present. By the time he had netted his eighth league goal for the club that figure had matched Saturday's opponent Aston Villa's shots on target tally for the season.
On the opposite side of the coin, however, there tend to be more of those that just can't buy a goal. In this piece WhoScored.com look at those unfortunate few that are struggling in front of the sticks in the season's formative stages.
The stats show Mario Balotelli is yet to hit top form since his move to Anfield
Yaya Toure - 15 shots without a goal
Much has been made of Yaya Toure's slow start to the season, by his lofty standards at least, and it's certainly been a disappointing return to action from the Ivorian when looking at the impact he made at the beginning of the previous campaign. The midfield powerhouse has wracked up 15 shots without notching in the league and looks some way off his imperious best.
Toure scored with his very first shot of previous campaign and took eight matches, rather than the five of this season, to muster 15 shots at goal. He's clearly trying hard to hit the goal trail once more but is perhaps taking too many pot shots in order to do so. After as many efforts in 2013/14 the 31-year-old had already scored four times in the league.
Dusan Tadic - 16 shots without a goal
It's always important for new signings to make a good first impression, and particularly those in attacking positions. It's fair to say that Dusan Tadic has managed that but will still be desperate to really announce himself to the Saints fans with a first league goal for the club, having struck from the spot against Arsenal in the cup.
With a deflected effort hitting the woodwork last time out the Serbian is getting closer and it seems only a matter of time. Like Toure, Tadic took little time to make his mark last season, scoring three times in his first two Eredivisie appearances, but with three assists to his name for the Saints already, he is already proving his worth to Ronald Koeman's new look side.
Lukas Jutkiewicz - 17 shots without a goal
Lukas Jutkiewicz is working hard but with little reward for Burnley
Another new recruit this summer yet to make an impression on his side's goal return is Burnley striker Jutkiewicz. As the leading front man in the absence of the Clarets' two top scorers from last season, however, the former Middlesbrough forward's profligacy has been far more of a concern. Having started every game for the club, Jutkiewicz has been one of the main culprits that have seen the newly promoted side fail to score since Scott Arfield's early strike in their opener with Chelsea.
With Danny Ings having joined Sam Vokes on the sidelines the new striker is carrying the weight of the goalscoring burden and that pressure seems to be affecting him thus far. With 17 shots without a goal, Jutkiewicz has tested the opposition keeper just five times and will need to improve his accuracy if Burnley are to avoid sinking without trace.
Connor Wickham - 17 shots without a goal
Month-long world beater and legitimate saviour of Sunderland's Premier League status earlier in the year, there's been a disappointing return to what has become a worrying norm in the Premier League for Connor Wickham. At 21 the striker certainly still has plenty of time to come good but the Black Cats fans and indeed the board hoped he would continue his end of season form from earlier in the year, resisting concrete interest from West Ham over the summer.
A couple of months on and Wickham is clearly in Gus Poyet's first-team plans, starting all six games of Sunderland's winless start to the season, but he isn't repaying that faith right now. To say that the forward has been wasteful would be a pretty drastic understatement, with just two of a relatively impressive 17 shots in total having hit the target thus far.
Mario Balotelli - 20 shots without scoring
Mario Balotelli has cut a frustrating figure for Liverpool so far this season
A quiet and unassuming integration into the Liverpool set up was never really likely where Mario Balotelli was concerned. The striker wants to be at the centre of attention when he plays but he won't be happy with the start he's made to his Reds career in front of goal. Balotelli may have scored for the club in the Champions League but he's had more shots without scoring in the Premier League than any other player.
Ten of his 20 shots in the English top-flight to date came in the weekend's derby draw with Everton, with the Italian clearly viewing that game as the ideal chance to win over the Liverpool fans. Balotelli will shoot from anywhere, frustrating his team-mates on more than the odd occasion, and will no doubt net for the club in the league soon enough having fired off the most shots per game this season (five). He'll certainly get his fair share of the headlines but it's fair to say you can expect a modest conversion rate from the controversial front man come the end of the season.

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana is fulfilling a childhood dream by finally playing in the Champions League.
The 26-year-old is in line for his second start on Wednesday having played for just over an hour in the Reds' late 2-1 victory over Bulgarian side Ludogorets at Anfield last month.
The £25m summer signing missed the start of the season with a knee injury and is now looking for more game time in the Group B match in Basel to get up to speed with his team-mates.
"I've always dreamt about playing in this competition as a kid," said the £25million summer signing from Southampton.
"I feel I am more or less there on fitness. I knew it was going to be tough, I am just delighted to be back playing for such a fantastic club.
"I think it gives you more game opportunities to get up to speed, to knit with the group and your new team-mates.
"It is obviously a tough competition and there is no easy game but, to take the positives out of it, it is another game."

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho will miss the next few weeks with a slight strain he’s picked up in training, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.
The French international was seen walking out of Anfield prior to the Merseyside derby on Saturday and hasn’t flown with the squad for tonight’s Champions League match in Basel.
However, Rodgers claims the 24-year-old picked up an injury in training since Saturday and that’s why he will miss “a few weeks”.
Speaking of Sakho’s walkout, Rodgers said “It [the walk-out] is not something we expect from our players. We have spoken, he knows the situation and he has apologised. We move on.”
Sakho’s exclusion – whether actually due to injury or not – means an opportunity for Martin Skrtel and Dejan Lovren to form a centre-back partnership. Although it does leave only Kolo Toure as cover in the position.
Sakho was signed for £18 million from PSG last summer, identified by Rodgers at the time as being the future of the club’s defence. The boss has since signed Lovren for £20 million, seemingly replace the Frenchman.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has told Roy Hodgson that Daniel Sturridge will not be fit to play for England next week even if he returns to action for the Reds this weekend.
Sturridge has not played since August after suffering a thigh injury during an England training session and did not travel to Switzerland for Wednesday’s Champions League game against Basel.
However, there is a chance he could make his comeback for Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League game against West Brom at Anfield.
But even if he does feature in that match, Rodgers, who said the injury “could have been prevented”, insists the forward will not be able to play in England’s European Qualifiers against San Marino at Wembley on Thursday and away to Estonia the following Sunday.
Rodgers said: "Whether he is available for West Brom or not, he won't be fit. We are hoping he can train with the team on Thursday.
"We hope he'll be available on Saturday. But if you are talking about a player's availability for England they need to be fit to play and Daniel will not be fit to play.
"It's something we have stressed. My focus is on protecting Liverpool players and, at this moment, my focus is on getting him fit for Liverpool."
England boss Hodgson could still call up Sturridge when he names his squad for the two games on Thursday and run his own checks on the 25-year-old.

Liverpool head to Basel to take on the Swiss champions on Wednesday night in their second game of the Champions League group stage.
The home side currently sit at the bottom of the group after being on the receiving end of 5-1 hammering from the tournament favourites, Real Madrid, in the first round of fixtures and Paulo Sousa’s side will be looking to bounce back with immediate effect against the Reds to drag themselves back into the reckoning.
Wednesday’s game represents a different, but big opportunity for Brendan Rodgers’ side however in contrast to their opponents.
After grinding out a win the hard way against a courageous Ludogorets team at Anfield, a win for the Reds could really see Liverpool grab a strong foot hold within the group ahead of tough matches back-to-back against Madrid’s ‘World XI’ superstars.
Rodgers’ team will have to produce another improved performance to back up the promising display in the Merseyside derby last Saturday if they want to make that happen and the Liverpool boss could consider a small number of changes ahead of the match in order to give his players the best chance to do so.
The Team
Injuries have made squad rotation difficult for Rodgers over recent weeks meaning the problem he has encountered most is over the shape of his team rather than personnel.
Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan, Joe Allen and Emre Can are all still missing and with the central midfield position especially currently light of options the Reds’ boss could choose to stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation that has been seen more times than hoped this season.
The back four is likely to remain the same regardless of formation due to injuries meaning Javier Manquillo is set to remain at right back. Mamadou Sakho’s bold decision to walk out of Anfield prior to the derby game will see his involvement restricted once more – though that is due to an injury – meaning Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel are likely to partner up at centre back, with Alberto Moreno alongside them at left back.
If Rodgers does stick with the 4-2-3-1 set-up, the Liverpool manager should make a change to the starting team replacing Lazar Markovic with Philippe Coutinho in the ‘3’ behind the striker – putting the Brazilian as the central figure and Adam Lallana to one side.
However, the Liverpool manager has a potential thinking point over whether to stick to a two man centre, or switch to a three, with Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson set to play their second game in four days and West Brom at home looming up at the weekend.
Opting for a three man midfield could both offer extra protection to Gerrard’s ageing legs and assist Henderson with the workload in the middle of the park, and after an impressive half hour cameo against Everton, Coutinho could be the perfect choice to do just that in a deeper midfield role.
That would allow Lallana and Raheem Sterling to join Mario Balotelli in three man attack, with Markovic – who is still finding his feet at Anfield – dropping to the bench.
Daniel Sturridge has been left at home after being monitored in the lead up to departure, but the England international is hoping to be available for selection for the weekend’s match against West Brom.
The Line Up
If Rodgers chooses to keep faith with the 4-2-3-1 shape, Liverpool could line up against Basel looking like this:
However, Rodgers should change the system deploying a three man midfield for reasons documented in a challenging fixture, and a 4-3-3 shape should see Liverpool line up for the match looking like this:
The Liverpool bench should look like this:
Jones, Toure, Enrique, Lucas, Suso, Markovic, Lambert.
Wednesday’s game presents a massive chance for Liverpool to really put themself in a strong position in Group B, before they welcome the reigning champions to Anfield in what promises to be a mouth-watering tie.
The Reds received a reality check against a determined Ludogorets in the first fixture, and Rodgers’ inexperienced side will know that they’ll have to be somewhere close to their best if they want to arrive back to Merseyside with maximum points from their first two European fixtures.
