Martin Kelly: In need of game time at Liverpool

Martin Kelly: In need of game time at Liverpool

Martin Kelly acknowledges that he is entering a 'massive season' at Liverpool as he looks to nail down a regular role.

The 24-year-old has seen injury and an inability to oust those in front of him from the starting line-up restrict his activity in the last two campaigns.

A man with one senior England cap to his name now appreciates that it is time for him to prove his worth at ‘peak fitness’ and secure a long-term future at Anfield.

He insists he is ready to put the frustrations of the recent past behind him and is looking forward to the challenge of competing with Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan for a right-back berth.

Kelly told Liverpool’s official website: “I think in terms of confidence and feeling strong I’m definitely 100 per cent, but in longer terms that takes games.

“You can’t replicate that in training, so the more games I play, the more I’ll get up to that peak fitness which is what I need this season – it’s a massive season for me.

“I’ve been fit for a season now but I haven’t had the games, so the run of games is vital for me this season and hopefully they’ll come in this pre-season.

“As a young lad you train and then you play at the weekend, so to train throughout the week and then not play at the weekend was difficult (last season).

“But I’m still part of the team, I was still travelling to all the games and I still felt a part of it. That’s what was good from Brendan (Rodgers) – to keep me involved with the team.

“I’m just looking forward to this season, enjoying my football, enjoying being here with the team and it’s exciting times for Liverpool, as you know.”

Formasi A: 4-2-3-1

Mignolet

Johnson-Skrtel-Agger-Enrique

Hendo-Gerrard (c)

Lallana-Coutinho-Sterling

Sturridge

Formasi B: 3-4-3

Mignolet

Skrtel-Agger-Sakho

Lallana-Hendo-Gerrard-Markovic

Remy-Sturridge-Sterling

Tapi so far mungkin bukan pilihan BR kot utk main 3 central defender,tp siapa tahu kan?

Kalau dilihat dr segi kualiti pemain, nmpknya musim baru nanti Liverpool mempunyai barisan pemain2 yg mempunyai "speed"..laju2 belaka..turut disertai pemain2 muda seperti Suso dan Ibe,maka dengan ini konfem kita akan main Fast Attacking football..

Sekadar pendapat saya..kongsikan pendapat anda pula :)

Xherdan Shaqiri impressed at the World Cup, where he bagged a hat-trick for Switzerland against Honduras.

Xherdan Shaqiri would not turn down the chance to play for Juventus after he was linked with the Italian champions.

The Bayern Munich playmaker has struggled to hold down a regular place since moving to the Bavarian giants from Basle in 2012, but an impressive World Cup for Switzerland, including a hat-trick against Honduras, has ignited interest in the 22-year-old.

Shaqiri declared that a move to an English Premier League club "would be an option" before the recent tournament in Brazil, and now Juventus are thought to have joined a list of clubs looking his way that includes Liverpool and Monaco.

"I'm having holidays and I don't know what will happen,” he told Tuttosport. “The only sure thing is that I have a deal until 2016 with Bayern. We will see in a short time.

“Juve ? I don't know if there are contacts with them or with Liverpool and Monaco. Surely Juve could be a good option so as Liverpool and Monaco. They are a big club, who wouldn't like to play there ? I'm a Bayern player but I wouldn't see Bianconeri as a step backward for my career."

Bayern are determined to hang on to Shaqiri, with sporting director Matthias Sammer recently claiming that the 2014 Bundesliga winners were not looking to sell the Swiss international.

Emre Can: Summer arrival at Liverpool

Emre Can: Summer arrival at Liverpool

WhoScored's Martin Laurence assesses summer signings Emre Can, Dusan Tadic, Siem de Jong, Mame Biram Diouf, Bafetimbi Gomis and Diego Poyet.

In a World Cup year the transfer window always tends to take a back seat, though that isn't to say clubs haven't been busy in the shadows, or out of them for that matter.

The Premier League's newest recruits include the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera and Felipe Luis, all making the switch from La Liga for significant sums.

There have certainly been some astute cheaper signings that have gone under the radar a little for one reason or another too, and in this piece WhoScored.com look at what to expect from a handful of them.

This isn't to say that the following were necessarily picked up for next to nothing but that all should represent good value for money in the long run.

Emre Can (Liverpool)

Completed alongside the £25m capture of Adam Lallana from Southampton, Emre Can's arrival at Liverpool was perhaps a little overshadowed.

At just 20, the versatile German youth international should get his fair share of the limelight next season and prove to be an invaluable asset given the Reds' lacking of players in his position(s).

Can made 12 of his 29 starts in the league and Champions League for Bayer Leverkusen last season at left-back, which has been a problem position at Anfield for some time now, but his strongest position is arguably in the middle of the park.

A highly capable defensive midfielder, the former Bayern graduate should take his place above Lucas and Joe Allen in the pecking order in that position, and his energy levels could be key alongside ageing captain Steven Gerrard.

Can averaged 2.6 tackles in the Bundesliga last season but also carries the ball from deep very well (2.5 successful dribbles per game).

He'll need to improve his passing figures to adjust to Brendan Rodgers' system but this youngster is more than capable of cementing a starting berth.

Dusan Tadic (Southampton)

Though it looks as though Southampton will continue to be stripped of its best parts, new man at the helm Ronald Koeman has moved fast to secure the men tasked with filling the shoes of Liverpool-bound Lallana and Lambert.

Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle have both made the move from Eredivisie having garnered the top two ratings in the Dutch top-flight from WhoScored.com last season.

Although the Italian front man just edged it (7.96 to 7.80), it's Tadic from whom the magic is expected.

The Serbian playmaker can play across a number of attacking positions, much like the man he is tasked with replacing, and has all of the tools to impress in the Premier League.

The 25-year old created 46 more chances than any other player in the Eredivisie last season (133), as well as completing the most accurate through balls (16) and crosses (64) in the league to help Twente to a third-placed finish.

Siem de Jong (Newcastle)

In a move that caught many off guard, Ajax captain Siem de Jong completed a switch to Newcastle after an injury-ravaged campaign with the Eredivisie champions.

Fit again and already firing having scored in each of the Magpies' first friendly fixtures thus far - including a stunning strike against Oldham - the Toon Army will hope for more from the 25-year-old than his younger brother Luuk was able to offer on loan last season.

Capable in both a centre-forward and midfield role, De Jong's involvement with Ajax was limited to just 16 league starts last season, though he did manage to net seven times.

He offers an aerial threat, scoring with three of nine headed efforts last season, and possesses strengths of aerial duels, finishing and headed attempts in turn according to WhoScored.com's statistically calculated characteristics.

The Dutch international should add firepower to a side in desperate need of it following the loss of top scorer Loic Remy.

Mame Biram Diouf (Stoke)

Though his name may not spark great excitement following a disappointing spell in the Premier League with Manchester United and later on loan at Blackburn, it's worth noting that Mame Biram Diouf is still only 26.

A productive stint in the Bundesliga has left the striker confident that he is better equipped to take on English football this time around and having signed on a free transfer, his arrival at Stoke represents impressive business on Mark Hughes' part.

Diouf is a good athlete and offers the physicality that the Potters demand from a lone front man having won 5.1 aerial duels per game with Hannover last season.

In his time with the German outfit the Senagalese international netted 26 league goals and registered a further 13 assists over 67 appearances, with his rating from WhoScored.com climbing with each season (7.05 - 2011/12, 7.11 - 2012/13, 7.33 - 2013/14).

Bafetimbi Gomis (Swansea)

It looks as though it could be a busy summer for Swansea, who have allowed Michu to leave the club on loan to Napoli - somewhat bafflingly - and could yet lose the likes of Bony, Hernandez, Davies and Vorm.

Garry Monk has managed to pull off an impressive signing in the form of French international forward Bafetimbi Gomis, though, made all the more so by the fact that the 28-year-old has joined on a free.

Though he is no longer in the reckoning for les Bleus, here is a man that has registered double figures in the league in each of his five seasons at Lyon, including 14 in the previous campaign.

Like Diouf, Gomis is a real threat in the air and has garnered strengths of finishing and headed attempts from WhoScored.com and, given that no player has scored more goals over the past five Ligue 1 seasons (64), Swansea have done well to secure his signature.

Diego Poyet (West Ham)

It's hardly the most eye-catching signing of the summer so far but West Ham may have stolen a march on a number of top clubs in convincing former Charlton youngster Diego Poyet - son of Gus - that Upton Park is the right place for his development.

Among his supposed suitors before a move across the capital were the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and even Barcelona, and the midfielder was awarded the Addicks' player of the year award despite not breaking into the first team until February.

He was a mainstay in the side from there on in, securing the best rating for the South Londoners from WhoScored.com (7.16) courtesy of some impressive statistics.

An 83.2% pass accuracy is no mean feat in the Championship, particularly for a 19-year-old, while no player in the entire division averaged more tackles per game (4.3) and no team-mate averaged more interceptions (2.5).

Given that West Ham had to look to the ageing Matty Taylor to partner Mark Noble towards the tail end of last season, the teenager could get more game time than some may expect.

Jom kongsi.....Keajaiban Liverpool di Istanbul 2005 (UCL)

(The miracle of Istanbul - 25 May 2005)

Apa kata mereka....

Johan Cruyff (Dutch football legend):

"There&039;s not one club in Europe with an anthem like You&039;ll Never Walk Alone. There&039;s not one club in the world so united with the fans. I sat there watching the Liverpool fans and they sent shivers down my spine. A mass of 40,000 people became one force behind their team. That&039;s something not many teams have. For that I admire Liverpool more than anything."

Jamie Carragher (LFC player 1996 – present):

"It was one of the greatest finals of all-time. People will be talking about it in 20 or 30 years time. I don&039;t think it can ever be bettered. Obviously this club can win the European Cup again but I think it&039;s the way we won it that made it so special."

Diego Maradona (Argentinean football legend):

"Even the Brazil team that won the 1970 World Cup could not have staged a comeback with Milan leading 3-0."

Djimi Traore (LFC player 1999 – 2006):

"When we were back in the dressing room the Milan players were outside already celebrating that they were champions, celebrating the victory. That really got to us and gave us the hunger to come back at them."

Jerzy Dudek (LFC goalkeeper 2001 – 2007):

"My brother phoned me the morning after the game and asked me had I seen the match again? I said no and he said &039;you need to see it because your save from Shevchenko was the hand of the God&039;. I told him I didn&039;t know how I did it."

Jaap Stam (AC Milan player):

"We put ourselves in a very good position to win the cup thanks to an excellent first half performance, but a six minute spell of magic from Liverpool took it away from us. After that we had enough chances to win the game but we couldn&039;t beat Jerzy Dudek."

Steven Gerrard:

"When Jerzy made that double save from Shevchenko, just before he hit it, I thought &039;goal&039;, and I knew that would be the end of it but then when it went over the bar, I thought maybe it was going to be our day."

"I didn&039;t sleep with the cup but I had it in my room! It was just special and I just had to have the cup with me, lifting the cup as Liverpool captain was just the best moment of my life."

Dan yang membuatkan bulu roma berdiri tegak adalah.....

Luis Garcia (LFC player 2004 – 2007):

"We were sitting in the dressing room and we could clearly hear thousands of fans singing You&039;ll Never Walk Alone. Can you imagine how that felt? We were 3-0 down in the Champions League final and all we could hear were 45,000 people letting us know they still believed in us. We knew they had endured a long journey and made so many sacrifices to be there. It was at that point we started to believe too."

The comeback of all comebacks began in the 54th minute..........

Liverpool play the first match of their USA tour in the early hours of Thursday morning (00.30 UK) when they take on Italian side AS Roma at Fenway Park.

Brendan Rodgers’ men visit Boston, home of club owners Fenway Sports Group, for the second time in three seasons where they’ll play Roma in the first of four games on their USA trip, which also includes matches against AC Milan, Manchester City and Olympiakos.

Liverpool faced Roma two years ago as the Reds embarked on a first pre-season trip to the United States under FSG, a game in which the Italians ran out 2-1 winners at Fenway Park, the same venue in which the fixture will be played on Thursday morning.

Charlie Adam scored for Liverpool ten minutes from time that day for Rodgers’ side, grabbing a consolation goal after Michael Bradley and Alessandro Florenzi handed Roma a 2-0 lead.

Team News

Brendan Rodgers has named a large but highly talented 33-man squad for the pre-season trip which features all of the returning World Cup participants except Mamadou Sakho and Simon Mignolet, who will join the tour at a slightly later date instead due to a prolonged World Cup campaign.

All of the current new signings are included and will feature for Liverpool on the tour which will see Adam Lallana commence his Liverpool duties along with fellow newcomer Lazar Markovic, who was present at the Reds last outing at Preston but didn’t feature in the match.

The opening tour fixture is set to come too early for transfer targets Loic Remy and Dejan Lovren, even though reports continue to indicate that deals for both players are close to being finalised, with French striker Remy flying out to join up with the Liverpool party to undergo a medical.

With the fixture being the first of the trip and senior players back in the fold, the match is once again likely to see Rodgers utilise the depth of the squad available and use a whole host of players throughout the 90 minutes, as he eases the international players and new signings into the set-up.

However, while the senior players settle back in to proceedings, the exciting Jordon Ibe and Kristoffer Peterson will be looking to carry on their impressive early pre-season form as they hope to force their way into the managers’ immediate thoughts for the season ahead.

All of the squad appear injury free and at Rodgers’ disposal for the friendly but new midfield enforcer Emre Can, who has missed training in Boston, is set to miss the game after being withdrawn just 20 minutes into his first Liverpool outing at Deepdale last Saturday.

It’s unlikely that any of the World Cup players will be involved in the match, definitely not from the start, given that they only started training on Monday.

The Opposition

Manager Rudi Garcia, who joined the club in June 2013, guided Roma to their best league season in four years in his debut season in charge, setting a new record points total for the club and finishing runners-up in Serie A, therefore qualifying automatically for the oncoming Champions League group stage.

The Giallorossi squad features house-hold names throughout such as Francesco Totti and Danielle De Rossi and also boasts a number of familiar names to Premier League followers including ex-Arsenal man, Gervinho, former Man City right back, Maicon, ex-Fulham full back, Urby Emanuelson as well as two previously linked and reported Liverpool targets Kevin Strootman and recently signed ex-Chelsea left back, Ashley Cole.

Garcia’s team also consists of some top European talent alongside the senior squad figures, including Adam Ljajic, Miralem Pjanic and exciting new signing Juan Manuel Iturbe, who joined last week from Verona for a reported £17.4million and the Argentine could make his first appearance in a Roma shirt in the match.

The game, which will be shown live on BT Sport, also represents the first of four pre-season tour fixtures for Roma, who also take on Manchester United, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Steven Gerrard announced his international retirement on Monday, following 14 years in an England shirt. Henry Jackson explains exactly why this decision is great news for Liverpool next season.

Jamie Carragher reacts to Steven Gerrard’s international retirement

Since the turn of the century, Steven Gerrard has been an England player. That was until Monday, when the 34-year-old decided to hang up his boots at international level and concentrate solely on Liverpool.

He may never quite have hit the consistent heights that he has produced in a Reds shirt, but there hasn’t been a more committed, passionate performer in a Three Lions shirt over the last 14 years.

Gerrard’s decision is an extremely positive one for Liverpool, as it allows the skipper a number of crucial rest periods throughout the season now. At his age that is crucial.

He no longer has to deal with the strain and expectation of being England captain- he looked extremely jaded in Brazil- and with Champions League football returning to Anfield he has enough on his plate with Liverpool.

With age not on his side, it would have been mad for Gerrard to lead Roy Hodgson’s side into another assault on a major tournament. It was the perfect time to call it a day.

You only have to look at several other truly great England players who retired from international duty in order to prolong their club careers.

Reds legend Jamie Carragher called it a day at the age of 32, following the 2010 World Cup, deciding that it was pointless sitting on the England bench when he could be at home preparing for Liverpool matches.

You have to wonder whether Carragher would have enjoyed such a terrific resurgence in form in his final season at Anfield had he carried on playing for England.

Alan Shearer and Paul Scholes, unquestionably two of the finest English players of their generation, weren’t even 30 when they played their final game for the Three Lions in 2000 and 2004, respectively.

Both went on to play Premier League football for years, remaining key players during that time. It seems highly unlikely that they would have been as effective for so long had they kept playing internationally.

The same applies to Ryan Giggs, although admittedly playing for Wales wasn’t nearly as stressful or frequent as representing England.

2014/15 Fixtures

You only have to look at England’s 2014/15 fixture schedule to see how full-on Gerrard’s campaign would have been had he stayed on as England captain.

The Premier League season will be just a couple of weeks old when England start their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

A friendly with Norway (3rd September) and then their opening qualifier away to Switzerland (8th September) would have represented a needless distraction for Gerrard, who will instead have two weeks off between Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham (31st August) and the visit of Aston Villa (13th September).

The Champions League group stage also starts three days after the Villa match, which Gerrard is sure to play a pivotal part in.

The Three Lions then reconvene a month later for clashes with San Marino (9th October) and Estonia (12th October), which are sandwiched between a visit to West Brom (4th October) and a home game against newly-promoted QPR (19th October) for the Reds. The third group game of the Champions League will take place a few days later too.

A qualifier against Slovenia (15th November) at Wembley and a friendly away to Scotland (18th November) follow, and if Gerrard were still playing for England he would have to tackle a very tricky schedule around that time.

Prior to those two England games Liverpool entertain Chelsea (8th November) in a huge game that holds unhappy memories for the Reds skipper, before an equally haunting trip to Crystal Palace (23rd November) awaits following the Scotland game.

Selhurst Park is an extremely tough place to visit, as Liverpool found out all too painfully last season, and the last thing Brendan Rodgers would want for a physical game like this is a jaded Gerrard following two weeks of gruelling England duty.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, June 2, 2012: England's captain Steven Gerrard in action against Belgium during the International Friendly match at Wembley. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It’s also worth noting that the penultimate group game of the Champions League is just a few days after the Palace game as well, which has every chance of being crucial for Liverpool.

England don’t play again until March, when they entertain Lithuania (27th March), and by this point the domestic season really will be at its business end.

On the Saturday before that game at Wembley, the Reds host Manchester United (21st March) in what is historically Liverpool’s biggest game of the season.

Then, the weekend after, Rodgers’ men travel to the Emirates to face an Arsenal side likely to be battling with Liverpool somewhere near the top of the table by that point in the campaign.

Whereas Gerrard would have had to report for international duty previously, between two huge league games, he will now have two weeks to recharge his batteries.

In total, the 34-year-old will avoid seven England games during the 2014/15 season, allowing himself four different sets of two-week breaks. That makes a huge difference for any 34-year-old at the top level.

The 114-time capped midfielder’s decision to end his international career should ensure he remains an integral part of Rodgers’ plans well into his 30s, emulating the likes of Carragher, Shearer, Scholes and Giggs in the process.

It’s terrific news for everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club.

How long do you think Steven Gerrard will remain a Liverpool player for? Let us know in the comments section.
