Report: Lucas Leiva heading to Napoli

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is nearing closer to a move to Napoli, according to reports on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Brazilian is largely out of favour at Anfield following captain Steven Gerrard‘s change to a deep-lying-playmaker at the turn of the year and a reunion with former boss Rafa Benitez has long been linked.

The Independent on Sunday report that while obstacles remain before the move can be completed, “Lucas is keen to move on from Anfield”.

Those obstacles are believed to be regarding the player’s wages, with earlier reports claiming that Napoli were interested in taking the player on loan, but not paying all his wages.

The former Gremio midfielder posted an image depicting light at the end of a tunnel on his instagram account on Saturday, perhaps a sign of his future.

Lucas joined Liverpool for £5m in 2007 and has made 243 appearances for the club. Unfortunately two serious injuries have hampered him in the last three years, turning him from first-choice holding midfielder to peripheral squad member.

His limited appearances in the second half of last season often saw him played in a more advanced role, where he struggled to find form.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is looking forward to mounting another assault on the Premier League this season.

The Reds were in pole position for last season's title until Steven Gerrard's costly slip gifted Chelsea victory at Anfield, and when they then let a three-goal lead slip against Crystal Palace it allowed Manchester City to take the eventual honours.

But Rodgers has not been reflecting on what might have been, and remains confident he can make Liverpool champions again in the near future.

"I wasn't lying on a sun lounger on a beach over the summer crying and fretting over the fact that we lost the league,” Rodgers said. “There is only an excitement and a belief inside the club that we can challenge again for the title this time.

"We proved last season that we can handle the pressure of a title run-in. I know people will point to the Chelsea and Crystal Palace games, but they should look instead at our last 14 games.

"Twelve wins, one draw, one defeat. That kind of form usually wins you the title. So I know we can cope with the pressure. What we didn't get was that wee bit of luck you need along the way.

"We just didn't get the breaks when we needed them most, but I believe that we will be back up there, challenging, and Liverpool Football Club is a very exciting place to be at this current time.

"Last season was a great step forward and now we must believe that we can go one better.

"If it doesn't happen this year, then it will happen soon. I really believe that because of what we're building at the club."
