Raheem Sterling: Left out of England XI against Estonia

Raheem Sterling: Left out of England XI against Estonia

Mark Holmes defends Liverpool and Raheem Sterling over his request for an England rest, and welcomes the possibility of new FFP regulations.

News that Raheem Sterling asked to be left out of England's starting XI against Estonia on Sunday has certainly sparked some debate, but it is difficult to know who, if anyone, deserves criticism.

A lack of pride?

If we assume that Sterling informed Roy Hodgson of his tiredness without any pressure or advise from elsewhere, does it highlight the lack of pride some England players have in representing their country?

Hardened England fans will certainly find it hard to empathise with a player turning down the chance to start for the Three Lions, and even Jamie Carragher has said, "I'd never give the manager an opportunity to leave me out" but, while there are no doubt plenty of current and, in particular, retired footballers that would say the same, others have leapt to Sterling's defence.

Gary Lineker, for example, insists it is feasible that a 19-year-old might be feeling tired so early into the new season, while Rio Ferdinand has hinted Sterling deserves praise for putting his body before pride.

Ferdinand claims Carlos Tevez is an example of a foreign player that asked to sit out training at Manchester United due to tiredness, whereas he and many of his England team-mates would constantly push themselves to the limit to their own detriment.

"With more rest at the right times throughout seasons, Rooney would have gone into tournaments for England fresher," Ferdinand tweeted. "Same could be said of Gerrard, Lampard, JT, A.Cole myself - all too proud to sit out of training or a match with the bigger picture in mind."

There has, ironically given the furore today, been plenty of people warn of Sterling becoming the latest England young player to suffer from burnout due to over playing, so that he enjoyed a relatively quiet international break could be viewed as a positive.

Given the simple path England appear to have towards the European Championships finals, perhaps Hodgson should be affording all of his players rests where possible? The national team boss is, after all, one of those to have called for a winter break in the Premier League.

Club pressure?

Few of us know how strong a personality Sterling is, but cynics have questioned whether such a young man had the confidence to ask his national manager to leave him out of a qualifier without pressure or at least advice from his club.

Former England defender Danny Mills, for example, said: "I don't believe a player his age will have gone to the manager and told him he's tired. Has there been influence from elsewhere? The club manager, for example?"

Hodgson's comment that "it's unfair if all the expectations to give the player a little bit of a break fall on me" certainly hint at some degree of Liverpool involvement in Sterling's request, opening up a different debate altogether.

It is certainly easier to argue that Sterling deserves credit for asking a rest than it is to argue any club is right to engineer one of their players being rested for a competitive England fixture.

However, Brendan Rodgers is not a hypocrite.

Back in April 2013 after Sterling had suffered a slight thigh injury, the Liverpool boss took the decision to rest the youngster for the rest of the season.

"If it is the best thing to do to rest him for the rest of the season, then we will do that because we don't need to risk him when it could cause problems for the future," Rodgers said at the time.

Even this season, with Sterling now a key player, Rodgers has shown he is willing to afford him rests, leaving him out of his side for the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last month.

"We have an exciting couple of months and this was a game I felt we could do that," he said.

"If he didn't have international football then it would have been the case."

If Sterling was a player that was being pushed to the absolute limit by his club, there would be room to criticise Liverpool or, for patriots, the player himself for putting club before country.

As that isn't the case, however, surely we should be thankful that England's best young player - a fact highlighted by the team's performance before his introduction in Tallinn - is, either by his own accord or because of good advice from his club, is looking after his body and might not be the latest bright young thing that fails to live up to his potential.

Hodgson mistake

Whether it was Sterling, Rodgers or someone else that first came up with the idea of a rest against Estonia, what is difficult to argue against is Carragher's assertion that Hodgson should have kept his conversation with the player quiet.

The amount of press coverage given to the situation certainly won't do any good for a young man that needs protecting emotionally and mentally as well as physically, while there is also the unlikely but definite possibility of Sterling being jeered by some England fans at the next game. And how that might affect his confidence.

It is also quite possible that Hodgson will have soured his relationship with Liverpool having made the comments, opening the door to future drop outs from not only Sterling but also Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and the rest of the Reds' England contingent. As unpalatable as it may be to give in to clubs' demands at times, keeping them on your side is crucial for a national team manager.

FFP regulations set for change?

Away from the international scene, it was revealed this last week that UEFA are to consider making debt reduction part of any change to their Financial Fair Play regulations.

This comes following the record £49million fine given to Manchester City, whose chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak quite rightly suggested the FFP rules were flawed.

"We have zero debt," he said. "We don't pay a penny to service any debt. For me, that is a sustainable model. However, our friends at UEFA seem to believe otherwise."

It is a debate that has been had many times before, but Al Mubarak is absolutely right. The FFP rules prevent a rich owner from investing heavily into a club, yet Manchester United, for example, are not penalised for their £350million debt. Football may be a unique business, but that is quite clearly not right.

There was always a feeling that the FFP rules were put in place to protect the place of the elite, and although UEFA are unlikely to introduce any sanctions that upset said elite too heavily, any move to encourage more of a fair fight in football can only be welcomed.

Grand Final thump

The spotlight on football and its players is far greater than that on any other sport, with every bit of wrongdoing magnified to the nth degree.

Well, it may not have made many of the front pages, but the events at Super League's Grand Final on Saturday should serve a reminder that much of the violent conduct we occasionally witness in football is absolutely nothing compared to that seen in some of those sports without the same exposure.

In the biggest game on England's rugby league calendar, Wigan's Ben Flower knocked St Helens' Lance Hohaia to the floor with one punch before jumping on top of him to power in a thunderous second. And this was in the second minute.

'Football is a gentleman's game played by thugs, while rugby is a thug's game played by gentlemen'. It's a saying I would have to disagree with.

Victor Valdes: Not rejected Liverpool offer

Victor Valdes: Not rejected Liverpool offer

Victor Valdes' agent has rejected a report claiming the former Barcelona goalkeeper had rejected a move to Liverpool after being asked to undergo a trial.

Liverpool have been credited with an interest in 32-year-old Valdes for some time, with the Spaniard a free agent after leaving Barcelona in the summer when his contract expired.

Reports over the weekend claimed that Liverpool invited Valdes over for training so they could assess his fitness after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in March, but that the Spain international snubbed the offer.

However, Valdes' representative, agent Gines Carvajal, insists they did not reject any offer to go trial from Liverpool and that they had no contact with Brendan Rodgers about a possible move to Anfield.

"Liverpool didn't ask us to train for four days. We haven't rejected it because it [the story] is false," Carvajal told Sport.

"Neither Brendan Rodgers nor Liverpool have ever made us this proposal, at any time."

Another international break is finally over and we can begin to look forward to Liverpool’s trip to QPR on Sunday. But it hasn’t been without bad news, again.

Dejan Lovren and Lazar Markovic have picked up injuries with Croatia and Serbia, respectively, with each expected to miss at least two weeks.

Lovren suffered an abdominal injury while training with Croatia on Thursday and returned to Merseyside over the weekend.

According to PhysioRoom, Lovren is targeting a return on October 22nd – the day of Liverpool’s home match against Real Madrid.

His injury, along with Mamadou Sakho currently sidelined with a thigh problem, means Liverpool only have Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure available at centre-back.

Markovic was injured during Serbia’s 1-1 draw against Armenia on Saturday. The 20-year-old attacker was withdrawn after 25 minutes with a suspected muscle tear.

Reports in Serbia, via The Liverpool Echo, claim Markovic will miss two to three weeks. He’ll be assessed by Liverpool’s medical team early this week.

On the positive side, Joe Allen and Daniel Sturridge should be fit to return against QPR, while Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli have been rested over the past week.

Several LFC players took the opportunity to head abroad during the break, with Lucas Leiva back in Brazil and Jose Enrique heading to Dubai.

Raheem Sterling: Told Hodgson he was feeling tired

Raheem Sterling: Told Hodgson he was feeling tired

England manager Roy Hodgson should have kept his conversation with Raheem Sterling private, according to Jamie Carragher.

Hodgson revealed the Liverpool winger told him he was feeling tired and so decided to bench the 19-year-old for the 1-0 win over Estonia.

Sterling came on for the final 25 minutes and won the free-kick which Rooney scored to give Hodgson's men victory in Tallinn.

But the post-match debate has centered over his conversation with the England manager, and Carragher believes it is something which should have been left behind closed doors.

"We can debate whether Raheem Sterling should say that to the manager - for me, as a player, I'd never give the manager an opportunity to leave me out," said the Sky Sports pundit. "I just think, whether he is tired or if he didn't feel right before the game, keep that between yourselves.

"Listening to Roy Hodgson - let's not forget Adam Lallana came on for Sterling and did really well against San Marino - he may have been looking to [rest him].

"Just come out after the game and say 'I played Lallana, he came on and did well in the last game, I think Raheem needs a little bit of a rest' and talk about it then. Rather than now, where there's going to be a debate about Raheem Sterling and is he right at that age to be asking things like that?"

England's 1-0 win on Sunday continued their 100% record in Group E so far, and they look on course to reach the Euro 2016 finals.

Burning out

Sterling has played almost three times as much football in the past 12 months than the previous 12, and Carragher understands why the 19-year-old wants to look after himself.

"I've mentioned it myself, that we've got to be careful with Raheem Sterling burning out" he added.

"You think of players in the past - I played with two of the best young players you'll ever see in Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler. They had a lot of injuries when they got to 23, 24, and a lot of it comes from too much football.

"So it's not the worst thing in the world, I just think the Englishman on the street doesn't understand someone saying they don't want to play.

"If he keeps playing and playing he may pick up injuries - maybe he's being clever and looking after himself in terms of his well-being in the future, and it's important he doesn't suffer burnout.

"But I just think Roy Hodgson could have been a bit more careful with what he said before the game and after the game, and we wouldn't be having these discussions now."

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp agrees with his former team-mate, saying Hodgson should not have revealed the exact details over why he did not pick Sterling from the start.

"I can't understand why Roy's gone into this," he said. "If he had just said he'd picked the team and picked Adam Lallana, and said to the press afterwards 'I just wanted to freshen it up, and felt Raheem Sterling would be a really good impact sub if we needed him for half an hour', we wouldn't even be talking about it.

"By saying that he's given a real problem between Raheem Sterling and himself, he's obviously caused problems with Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers.

"Sometimes to be secret is the best thing to do - honesty is not always the best policy, and Roy Hodgson has come out and said this. I don't know why he's got embroiled in it."

Roy Hodgson left Raheem Sterling on the bench for England's Euro 2016 qualifier in Estonia because the Liverpool star was feeling tired.

The young winger was one of the few England players to emerge from the World Cup with his reputation enhanced.

But Hodgson only gave Sterling 45 minutes in Thursday's win over San Marino and then started the teenager on the bench for the 1-0 victory in Tallinn on Sunday.

Hodgson revealed Sterling approached him at England's training base in Hertfordshire the day before the Estonia match and complained of feeling tired.

"We were just about to have a light session at the Grove and he said, 'I feel tired and I don't think I am in my best form at the moment'," Hodgson said.

"I admire his honesty for telling me. It was two days after the San Marino game when we did a lot of running then because we had a lot of the ball.

"I had two players - one was telling me he is tired, a little bit jaded. And the other (Adam Lallana) is full of beans so we put the one on that is full of beans and left the other as sub."

Sterling did come on for Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson in the 63rd minute in Tallinn, but did not impress too much as England struggled to record a victory that eventually came when Wayne Rooney scored a free-kick.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers recently spoke about fears of burnout for Sterling, whom he rested for the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last month.

Hodgson was happy to rest the teenager for the win at the A. Le Coq Arena, but he thinks the Reds boss should also consider giving the player a break so he can get back to his best.

When asked whether he, rather than Rodgers, should always be the one who rests Sterling to help him recover, Hodgson said: "I would hope not.

"I don't think that's fair. We do have to take players' workload into consideration, and there are going to be times in top league teams where players suffer from some sort of physical and mental fatigue, but I think it's a bit unfair if all the expectations to give the player a little bit of a break fall on my shoulders.

"He broke into the Liverpool team, had a fantastic season and then went to the World Cup. He is only a 19-year-old.

"It is not as simple as the training you are having may be taking a bit of juice from your legs.

"There is an awful lot going on in your head as well, so perhaps it is quite simply that the season has not started as well for Liverpool, he is in the spotlight for England and Liverpool... Maybe that has had some effect. I don't know. It's a theory."

Estonia played with 10 men for the final 43 minutes because of a red card for captain Ragnar Klavan but they absorbed the pressure – until Rooney’s intervention.

Hodgson's opposite number Magnus Pehrsson was surprised England looked so blunt in attack.

The Estonia coach said: "In the second half it felt as though England were not dangerous. I was surprised and quite happy they weren't."

Pehrsson believes his skipper was unlucky to be dismissed for fouls on Danny Welbeck and Fabian Delph either side of half-time.

"I disagree with the first yellow card. It was really harsh," he said. "We played against England, but we didn't get any help today."

Brazilian giants Sao Paulo are attempting to organise a January friendly against Liverpool.

Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo report the Brazilian clubs interest in organising the match which would be for goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni’s testimonial.

The two sides faced each other in the 2005 World Club Cup Final in Japan, which Sao Paolo won 1-0, with Ceni their captain.

Ceni is the highest scoring goalkeeper ever – having scored 120 goals during his 22-year career with Sao Paulo.

Liverpool face Leicester, Sunderland, Aston Villa and West Ham in January, plus the FA Cup third round. There is the possibility of fitting the game in between Sunderland and Aston Villa games.

Liverpool’s January Fixtures

January 1: Leicester City (home, Premier League)

January 3: FA Cup Third Round

January 10: Sunderland (away, Premier League)

January 17: Aston Villa (away, Premier League)

24 January: FA Cup Fourth Round (possible)

Victor Valdes’ agent, Gines Carvajal, has denied reports that his client has turned down a four-day trial at Liverpool – saying no such offer has been made.

Carvajal told Spanish newspaper Sport:

“This proposal was never made to us by Brendan Rodgers or Liverpool at any moment. Liverpool has not offered training [for] four days and we have refused, because it [the report] is false.”

He was speaking after a report in the Sunday People claimed Valdes had turned down Rodgers’ request to undergo a four day trial at Melwood in order to prove his fitness after being sidelined with an ACL injury since March.

Talks between Liverpool and Valdes’ representatives were reported to have begun late last week, with a view to the former Barcelona goalkeeper joining the club on a free transfer.

England manager Roy Hodgson told media ahead of England’s game against Estonia on Sunday evening that Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling had complained of feeling tired, hence he was not included in the starting 11.

Speaking on ITV immediately after, former England and Arsenal forward Ian Wright appeared sceptical that Sterling would complain of being tired, saying he had never known of a player telling a manager he felt tired.

It was an incredible claim from Hodgson, whether true or not, to hang out the player in such a public manner.

Of course, it’s extremely naive to believe Hodgson’s words as gospel. But that didn’t stop England fans from taking to social media to criticise Sterling:

These people would be better off not believing Hodgson. This is, after all, a manager who previously decided to play Daniel Sturridge while injured to “test his resolve”.

Thankfully, there are some journalists who can see through the England manager’s words:

Incredibly, Hodgson had stated just 24 hours earlier that “It’s a question about man-management” regarding Sterling not being over used by club and country. Now he’s hung him out to dry with publicly claiming he had told he was tired.

It’s staggering that the England manager made such a statement.

Adam Lallana replaced Sterling in the starting 11 for England.
