Luis Suarez has been handed a nine match international suspension and banned from ALL football activity for four months, which means he will miss the start of the new season.

The 27-year-old Uruguayan will miss the rest of the World Cup, and the start of the domestic and European campaign for club football.

He has also been given a £65,000 fine.

FIFA announced the details on Thursday following the bite on Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on Tuesday.

A return date of October 25th would mean Suarez will miss the first three opening Champions League group games and nine Premier League games.

FIFA spokesperson says that football activity includes “administrative, sport or any other” – leading to questions as to whether the administration part would include transfers.

The ban on all football activity means Suarez will not be able to attend football matches, and some speculation persists as to whether he is even allowed to train with his teammates.

The statement from FIFA reads:

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has reached a decision in the case related to Luis Suárez of Uruguay following an incident that occurred during the FIFA World Cup™ match between Italy and Uruguay played on 24 June 2014.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided that:

· The player Luis Suárez is regarded as having breached art. 48 par. 1 lit. d of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC) (assault), and art. 57 of the FDC (an act of unsporting behaviour towards another player).

· The player Luis Suárez is to be suspended for nine (9) official matches. The first match of this suspension is to be served in the upcoming FIFA World Cup™ fixture between Colombia and Uruguay on 28 June 2014. The remaining match suspensions shall be served in Uruguay’s next FIFA World Cup match(es), as long as the team qualifies, and/or in the representative team’s subsequent official matches in accordance with art. 38 par. 2a) of the FDC.

· The player Luis Suárez is banned from taking part in any kind of football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) for a period of four (4) months in accordance with art. 22 of the FDC.

· A stadium ban is pronounced against the player Luis Suárez in accordance with art. 21 of the FDC as follows: the player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the period of the ban (point 3). The player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium in which the representative team of Uruguay is playing while he has to serve the nine-match suspension (point 2).

· The player Luis Suárez is ordered to pay a fine in the amount of CHF 100,000.

The decision was notified to the player and the Uruguayan FA today.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field. The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suárez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated,” said Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

Liverpool have today suffered differing fortunes regarding two of their biggest transfer targets this summer, with one move reportedly off and another picking up pace.

By Henry Jackson (@OnFootballTweet

Moreno

Liverpool’s chances of signing highly-rated Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno appear to be over, according to the sporting director of the Spanish club.

Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo released the following statement regarding the 21-year-old, saying that the two clubs could not agree terms with the Spanish international.

“The matter of Alberto is practically settled. We couldn’t reach an agreement and I don’t think it can be revived.

“It was a great offer, but the player is only 21 years old and it’s possible that the catharsis of being with the national team had a positive effect.”

Should the Moreno deal not go through, which evidently seems highly unlikely now, the club are likely to turn their attentions to either Ricardo Rodriguez or Marcos Rojo, who have both impressed so far at the World Cup, for Switzerland and Argentina respectively.

Shaqiri

On a more positive note for Reds fans, their chances of signing talented winger Xherdan Shaqiri appear to be in the final stages, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Di Marzio has reported that, despite interest from Milan and Roma, the Swiss star’s agent, who is also his brother, is currently in England finalising a deal for the 22-year-old.

The Bayern Munich winger has been one of Liverpool’s primary transfer targets for a number of weeks now, and his hat-trick for Switzerland against Honduras in Wednesday’s World Cup clash perfectly highlighted his quality.

Acquiring his signature would be a strong statement of intent by Liverpool, and with another flying winger, Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez, also hotly tipped to be in a Reds shirt next season, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating summer for all involved with the club.

Luis Alberto‘s season long loan to Malaga has been confirmed – with the Spanish side reported to be paying £1 million to Liverpool and paying his wages.

The 21-year-old signed for Liverpool last season from Sevilla for £6.8 million but has failed to adapt to life in England thus far.

Liverpool will be hoping that Alberto will be able to get regular playing time while on loan at Malaga and return to the club having developed as a player, or ensure a higher re-sale value next summer.

A loan spell similar to Fabio Borini‘s, a player of a similar age to Alberto, would be pleasing.

Liverpool FC transfer gossip: Alderweireld talks begin, Sanchez done deal, Reds line up Origi, Shaqiri a possibility.

Liverpool FC have opened talks with Atletico Madrid for defender Toby Alderweireld, according to reports in Italy. The Italian press have linked the 25-year-old with a move to Anfield, claiming the Reds have approached Atletico to discuss a £7million transfer and hope to be able to do business quickly. The powerful Belgian, who can play anywhere across the back four or in midfield, was a target for Liverpool last summer before eventually signing for Atletico.

Meanwhile, LFC&039;s pursuit of Alexis Sanchez is a "done deal" according to former captain Phil Thompson. Speaking to Irish radio, the Kirkby defender said the Barcelona star is already on his way to Anfield. "Just yesterday I heard things from people saying that the Sanchez deal was actually done." A striker appears to be high on Brendan Rodgers&039; wishlist, with the Reds closing in on Belgium World Cup star Divock Origi.

The Times say Liverpool are closing in on a deal for the Lille forward, who has starred off the bench in Brazil. It appears the club are favourites for the 19-year-old&039;s signature, despite interest from Tottenham, as they are prepared to loan him back to Lille next season.

And finally, Gianluca DiMarzio of Sky Italia believes Xherdan Shaqiri is on his way to Liverpool. The Bayern Munich winger, who scored a hat trick for Switzerland against Honduras, was thought to be attracting interest from Roma and Milan. But the Reds, previously linked to the Swiss star, have supposedly won the race to land him.

Jamie Carragher: At Liverpool when Luis Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic

Jamie Carragher: At Liverpool when Luis Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool should not bear the brunt of any punishment Luis Suarez may be facing.

Suarez is expected to find out in the next 24 hours whether FIFA's disciplinary committee considers him guilty of biting Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's World Cup win over Italy.

A ban would likely follow any guilty verdict, and it is within FIFA's remit to extend any suspension to his club football.

That would be unfair on Liverpool, according to Sky Sports pundit Carragher, who was still on the Anfield playing staff when Suarez bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in April 2013 to earn a 10-game ban.

The Ivanovic offence followed a similar attack on an opponent during Suarez's time at Ajax, but Carragher told Sky Sports News: "I don't agree with a worldwide ban. The last time he was banned Liverpool lost him for 10 games, but I think he still played for Uruguay.

"This is an international tournament, a FIFA tournament, the biting incident is in a Uruguay shirt and it should be Uruguay and Luis Suarez who pay the consequences.

"I would expect he'll miss the rest of the World Cup. He had seven games for the Ajax incident, 10 for the Liverpool one so you may expect it'll go to a 12 or 15-game ban - in international football that could be more than 12 months. I don't think Liverpool should be affected."

Suarez was being heavily linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona even before the Chiellini incident, and Carragher believes Liverpool may now be less inclined to fight for their star man - as long as their asking price is met,

"It's all about money," he said. "Of course the club will not be happy with the scenes, and Luis won't be happy himself, but it all comes down to numbers.

"Liverpool are not going to let an £80-£100m player leave for a cut-price fee, but if someone did offer that type of money I think now they may think 'take the money'.

"I certainly don't think Liverpool should be looking to get rid of him on the cheap. If someone pays top dollar I think now may be the time, but if they don't then I don't think Liverpool will sell."

Former Scotland international Alan McInally has dismissed suggestions from Luis Suarez’s lawyer that the media in England and Italy are orchestrating a witch-hunt against the striker following his alleged bite on Giorgio Chiellini.

Lawyer Alejandro Balbi told local radio in Uruguay that Suarez has become the victim of a “manhunt” adding “there’s a lot of pressure from England and Italy.”

But former Aston Villa and Bayern Munich striker McInally believes images of the incident speak for themselves and accused the striker of acting like a “spoilt child”.

“I don’t know how you can even look at the pictures and think there is a witch-hunt because in my opinion he has definitely motioned as if he is going to bite or is trying to or appearing to,” McInally told the World Cup Report on Sky Sports News.

“I don’t get this perception of a witch-hunt for the simple reason that the pictures are pretty damning and I’ll be amazed if FIFA don’t somehow ban him.

“Somebody once said if you want to see someone’s future behaviour you just have to look at their previous behaviour and unfortunately he hasn’t learned his lesson.

“Whether you’re successful or average there is big money to be made in football and a lot of them act like spoilt brats.

"He acted like a spoilt child, as though somebody had done something to him five or six minutes ago and he was going to take his own retribution."

McInally, who represented Scotland at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, believes if the allegations against Suarez are proved, the Uruguayan should never be allowed to play at a World Cup again.

“He should be banned,” McInally said. “I don’t see him taking any further part in the World Cup and to be honest I think if the ban should go ahead I don’t think he should ever be allowed to play in the World Cup again - it’s that bad.

“This is our biggest football tournament and it was one of my proudest moments representing Scotland in the World Cup.

“It couldn’t get any higher as a football player. Everybody in the world is watching you and he allegedly does something like that. He shouldn’t play in the World Cup again.”

Alan McInally says there is no witch-hunt against Uruguay's Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez: Awaiting punishment from FIFA

Luis Suarez: Awaiting punishment from FIFA

Jamie Carragher believes Luis Suarez may never learn from his mistakes - and he is not sure who can replace Steven Gerrard as England captain.

Suarez is waiting to hear what punishment he will be handed by FIFA after appearing to bite Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's win over Italy on Tuesday.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports' latest World Cup Podcast, believes his former Liverpool team-mate may never be able to shake his problems.

He said: "He has let himself, his team and his family down - I was at Anfield when he bit Branislav Ivanovic and know how devastated his wife was by his actions - while Liverpool certainly won't be impressed either.

"It's not a one-off either. There is now a long list of things Luis has done and I think this is going to be around for a long time because he did this on such a massive stage and with the whole world watching.

"I know FIFA have not yet said if or what type of ban he might get - some people are talking all kinds of numbers - but, considering that he got 10 games in the Premier League, I would be surprised if he will feature again in this World Cup.

"After the way he performed last year I thought he had learned a massive lesson in his life and overcome things but this obviously shows he hasn't, that this is within him and that it will be difficult to stop or cut out totally.

"You try to understand what you are seeing but you can't really because it is such a bizarre moment and this is another blot on his copybook."

Lack of captain material

Carragher also gave his verdict on England's draw with Costa Rica and the possible replacement for Steven Gerrard as captain should be decide to retire from international football.

"There weren't really too many positives from England's game with Costa Rica," Carragher said.

"Fair play to Roy Hodgson and Gary Neville for giving guys who have been at the World Cup and not really played a chance but it wasn't a great performance and it looked like what it was: a game that didn't mean too much.

"It's sad to see us in that situation and not beat Costa Rica, as even though they have caused two shocks against Italy and Uruguay and got through to the last 16, we really should be beating them.

"I also don't see a natural England captain should Steven Gerrard retire as there aren't too many club captains who could take the bigger role and more responsibility.

"I don't see Gary Cahill as England captain material at the moment. He is a first-choice centre-back now but is still establishing himself at international level - and how long Wayne Rooney will stay in Roy's first XI with the emergence of young players, like Ross Barkley, remains to be seen.

"I think that's one of the reasons why Roy is so keen to keep Steven but if Steven does go, I'd say the captaincy would be between Rooney, who I do think will be a first-choice for England at the start of next season, and Joe Hart.

Suarez may never learn - Carragher

FIFA have fast-tracked their investigation into Luis Suarez’ apparent bite on Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini – Suarez has until 9pm to respond to the claims.

The game’s global governing body say they are dealing with the incident as a matter of urgency – Uruguay’s next game is on Saturday - and that Suarez could face a worldwide ban if found guilty.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee are due to meet on Wednesday evening to look at the case – although they may not make an immediate decision.

"The Disciplinary Committee understands the urgency of the matter," said FIFA spokeswoman Delia Fischer.

"It is working to get and assess all elements in order to make a decision as early as possible, particularly given the fact that Uruguay are still in the tournament."

The longest ban in World Cup history was eight games for Italy's Mauro Tassotti for breaking Spain's Luis Enrique's nose with his elbow in 1994.

Suarez has twice been banned for biting opponents - for 10 matches in 2013 for his clash with Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic and in 2010 he was given a seven-game ban while playing for Ajax for sinking his teeth into PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal.

FIFA's disciplinary code allows action to be taken retrospectively via video evidence even if the incident has been seen by the referee – and they have the power to implement a worldwide ban.

Speaking after Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy last night, Suarez said he had been hit in the face - but that “these things happen on the pitch” and were not important.

"These kind of matches have these things, there is a lot of wearing out, and we need to give the maximum,” he said.

"It was complicated, they control the ball very well, it was very hot, we had to be cautious because of many players in the midfield that controlled the ball really well, but well, we controlled the timings, and that was important"

"Yes, I have been hit, near the eye, but those things happen in the pitch"

"Well, we are all football players, we all know what happens on the pitch, it's not important"

"I don't think it was important, those things happen on the pitch..."

Chiellini, who tried to show referee Marco Rodriguez the mark on his shoulder, believes the authorities must now look back at what happened and punish Suarez.

The defender told Sky Italia: "Suarez has bitten me and the referee saw it, but then there is the need to have the courage to take decisions.

"We will see if there is the courage to utilise the TV images to ban him."

World Cup: FIFA fast-track investigation into Uruguay's Liverpool striker Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez‘s latest controversy could see him receive a ban from FIFA as early as Wednesday night. The latest incident comes 14 months after the bite on Branislav Ivanovic, which saw Liverpool condemn the striker and seek to help him change his ways.

Liverpool immediately moved to condemn Suarez after the Ivanovic incident, releasing a statement from Suarez, managing director Ian Ayre and manager Brendan Rodgers within hours of the match finishing.

“His behaviour is not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt and Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down” said Ayre. “We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the FA.”

“Having reviewed the video footage and spoken to Luis, his behaviour is unacceptable and I have made him aware of this,” commented Rodgers.

Of course, the latest incident occurred while on international duty, and Uruguay’s response has been quite the opposite of Liverpool’s – with his lawyer telling Uruguayan radio: “We’re going to use all the arguments possible so that Luis gets out in the best possible way.”

After the Ivanovic incident, Liverpool said that they would seek to help Suarez. “Luis hasn’t worked with Dr Steve [Peters] yet but that’s something that will be in the pipeline,” Rodgers explained.

“What we try to do with all the players is ensure there’s a support mechanism there to help their human needs.”

Suarez vowed to change his ways. “I want to change the bad boy image that has stuck for a bit because I don’t think I am at all how I have been portrayed,” he said in an interview with Sports Illustrated just a week before the World Cup. “I would like that to change because it’s awful to hear and read what is said of you.”

“On the field, sometimes passion overwhelms you and you do things you regret afterward. At the same time, you have a chance to learn from those things.

“I think I [have] been a role model since last summer; I have been professional, and I have the desire to forge ahead and play well regardless of what is said to me.”

That interview with SI was one of many that Suarez had given over the previous 12 months, as he and Liverpool sought to change his bad boy image. He’d seemingly improved his manner on the pitch and was conquering his demons. All until that moment of madness on Tuesday night.

Here is a look at how Liverpool and Suarez tried, and it would appear failed, to fix Suarez’s image following the Ivanovic incident:

26th April 2013- Suarez took to his twitter to apologise for biting Ivanovic and promising to change his ways:

“I am truly very sorry. I hope that all the people who I have offended at Anfield last Sunday will grant me forgiveness.

“I know that all the things that are happening to me in England will help me to improve my conduct on the field. Right now, I just want to focus on becoming a better footballer on and off the field. Many things have been said and written about me, I just tried to do my best on the field. I hope to come back early to play.”

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said at the time that the club “had to move on” and that they looked forward to “welcoming a better person and player when he returns.”

21st February 2014- Suarez conducted an interview with the Echo , and in it he thanked the fans for their support during a tough period for him:

“The fans have helped me so much. Everyone knows that I had some difficult times last summer. But they have always supported me and always had confidence in me. I really feel that support in my heart.

“I think this has been the best season of my career so far. It’s my job to score goals and create goals, and help the team. When you have really good team-mates and a manager who believes in you then it helps so much with your job.

“For me, stepping on to the pitch knowing I have the confidence of the supporters means everything to me as a player. They help me to give my best.”

March 2014 – Suarez conducted an in-depth interview with FourFourTwo magazine, with the interviewer writing an article after saying that “I met the real Luis Suarez… and he was a thoroughly nice chap.”

From there, followed interviews with Sports Illustrated, The Daily Mail and other British broadsheets, each finding Suarez to be very much the opposite of his bad-boy image. There was also ESPN’s incredibe, in-depth, ‘portrait of a Serial Winner

But all that has been completely undone by this latest incident. Happening at a World Cup has only further damaged by Suarez and, indirectly, Liverpool’s image.
