Kolo Toure says Brendan Rodgers has the full support of the Liverpool squad

Kolo Toure says Brendan Rodgers has the full support of the Liverpool squad

Liverpool defender Kolo Toure thinks boss Brendan Rodgers should be given more time and that it is “crazy” that his position should be under scrutiny.

Rodgers almost guided Liverpool to a first Premier League title for 24 years last season, when they finished just two points behind champions Manchester City.

But they have endured a difficult 2014-15 campaign so far, failing to get out of the Champions League group stages and suffering a string of Premier League defeats.

Sunday’s 3-0 reverse at arch-rivals Manchester United was a seventh League loss of the season and Liverpool are currently only 10th in the table.

But centre-back Toure, who has forced his way back into the first team picture of late, says the squad are right behind their manager.

"It's crazy to even talk about his future," said Toure.

"He's a great manager and we all know that. Just look at how fantastic he did last season.

"We're all behind him and we're all trying to make things better. He's a great manager, we all love him.

"He took me from (Manchester) City where I was not playing a lot and people were thinking 'Kolo is gone', and he gave me another chance by bringing me in to Liverpool. Now I am playing at one of the best clubs in the world.

"I enjoy my football under him, I feel younger than ever now. He is a great manager and he makes us play football.

"We will all do our best to get him and the club out of this situation."

Toure is confident results will improve as Liverpool’s influx of summer signings continue to settle in and asked for patience from the fans.

"My message to the fans is this - keep believing," he said.

"I believe in this manager and I believe in this group of players. I know we will improve during the second half of the season.

"We have brought in new players, they need to adapt, and that always takes time.

"It's been a tough week for us with going out of the Champions League to Basel and then losing to United.

"But this is a good club and we bounce back all the time. We have to stick together and make sure we bounce back again. If we win one game, then the confidence will come back."

Liverpool’s next match is a Capital One Cup quarter-final tie at Bournemouth on Wednesday.

"The League Cup is a really important competition for us," said Toure.

"There's the chance to get to Wembley and win a trophy. We have the quality to do that."

Eddie Howe: The Bournemouth boss is relishing taking on Liverpool

Eddie Howe: The Bournemouth boss is relishing taking on Liverpool

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe feels Liverpool have been unlucky in recent games but is looking forward to their Capital One Cup quarter-final clash against them on Wednesday.

Brendan Rodgers' side currently sit 10th in the Premier League, 18 points shy of leaders Chelsea.

They head into the tie having failed to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League before suffering their seventh league defeat of the season against Manchester United on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the south coast club are top of the Championship and are chasing a place in the Premier League for the first time.

Howe's side are unbeaten since September and have already beaten top-flight opposition in the League Cup this season in West Brom.

Special game

The Cherries will be looking to avenge their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup last season when they host the Merseysiders at a sold-out Goldsands Stadium, live on Sky Sports 1.

"The game against Liverpool is a really special one in the club's history," Howe told Sky Sports. "We've never been to a major cup quarter-final in our history so to be up against a club the size of Liverpool with their history makes it all the more special for us.

"I think they've been incredibly unlucky. You look at the game against Manchester United on Sunday, I thought they were excellent and on another day I think they would have won the game with all the chances they created.

"People over react and look very short-term in football. Brendan won manager of the year last year and deservedly so in my opinion and he's still an outstanding manager."

Watch Bournemouth take on Liverpool in the Capital One Cup quarter-final, live on Sky Sports 1 on Wednesday from 7pm.

Kolo Toure thinks speculation over Brendan Rodgers‘ future is “crazy” and has backed the Liverpool manager to turn things around at Anfield.

Liverpool slumped to 10th in the Premier League after their seventh and most damaging defeat of the season at the home of arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday. Rodgers was hailed for taking Liverpool to within a whisker of the title last season, but he has come in for severe criticism of late.

Liverpool are 18 points shy of leaders Chelsea after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat and they also exited the Champions League at the first hurdle after recording just one win – against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets.

Toure thinks the criticism of Rodgers has been harsh considering that he was just two points short of guiding Liverpool to their first title in 24 years last season.

“It’s crazy to even talk about his future,” the Liverpool defender said. “He’s a great manager and we all know that. Just look at how fantastic he did last season.”

Toure will forever be indebted to Rodgers for handing him an exit route from Manchester City, where he struggled to hold down a first-team place following a £16million move from Arsenal. He retains complete faith in the Northern Irishman and says the rest of the squad support their manager too.

“We’re all behind him and we’re all trying to make things better,” Toure said. “He’s a great manager. We all love him.

“He took me from City where I was not playing a lot and people were thinking ‘Kolo is gone’ and he gave me another chance by bringing me in to Liverpool and now I am playing at one of the best clubs in the world.

“I enjoy my football under him. I feel more young than ever now. He is a great manager and he makes us play football. We will all do our best to get him and the club out of this situation.”

Rodgers spent £117million in the summer, but none of the nine recruits have impressed so far and the Reds have greatly missed the injured Daniel Sturridge.

Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert have scored once between them in 1,265 minutes of Premier League action this season. Adam Lallana has struggled to find form after injury and his former Southampton team-mate Dejan Lovren has done nothing to justify the £20million fee Liverpool paid for him in the summer.

But given time, the players will start producing, Toure insists. “My message to the fans is this – keep believing,” he said. “I believe in this manager and I believe in this group of players. I know we will improve during the second half of the season.

“We have brought in new players, they need to adapt and that always takes time.

“It’s been a tough week for us with going out of the Champions League to Basle and then losing to United. But this is a good club and we bounce back all the time. We have to stick together and make sure we bounce back again. If we win one game then the confidence will come back.”

Liverpool face Arsenal next weekend and then have a run of winnable fixtures over the festive period against Burnley, Swansea, Leicester, Sunderland and Aston Villa.

But first they face the tricky task of defeating in-form Bournemouth in their Capital One Cup quarter-final clash on Wednesday. Eddie Howe’s team are unbeaten in 12 games, but Toure is looking forward to playing against the Championship team.

“The League Cup is a really important competition for us,” said Toure, who captained Arsenal to defeat in the 2007 final against Chelsea. “There’s the chance to get to Wembley and win a trophy. We have the quality to do that.”

Frank de Boer: Welcomes Liverpool links

Ajax coach Frank de Boer 'would think' about taking over at Liverpool, according to his brother Ronald.

De Boer has won four successive Eredivisie titles with Ajax and admitted earlier this year that Liverpool and Tottenham would be his 'cup of tea' if he left the Dutch club.

He has previously turned down the chance to manage both Premier League teams.

"If Liverpool come now he would certainly think about it," De Boer's brother Ronald said to Fox Sports.

"He would certainly not close the door immediately, like he did two years ago."

De Boer is currently the fourth favourite for the Liverpool job behind Andre Villas-Boas, Jurgen Klopp and Rafa Benitez.

There have been reports that Liverpool owners FSG have had to be persuaded not to sack Brendan Rodgers by former players.

It’s the competition we didn’t want to be in – but with this season’s Europa League winners earning a place in next year’s Champions League, where should the competition rank among Brendan Rodgers‘ list of priorities this season?

05.12.2012, Stadio Friuli, Udine, ITA, UEFA EL, Udinese Calcio vs FC Liverpool, Gruppe A, Training, FC Liverpool, im Bild Schriftzug "UEFA Europa League", steht die zweithoechste Spielklasse der UEFa vor dem aus? // Banner "UEFA Europa League", is the second highest division of UEFA out before? during Training of Liverpool FC before the UEFA Europa League group A match between Udinese Calcio and Liverpool FC at the Stadio Friuli, Udinese, Italy on 2012/12/05. We get the views of our This Is Anfield writers on how seriously the Reds should take the competition:

We definitely shouldn’t write off the Europa League. It’s a 9-game path back to the Champions League.

However, and there’s only a hair’s breadth in it, we should prioritise the league as we have a better chance of finishing fourth – just. This isn’t because we’re great in the league. We’re clearly not. However, there’s no ‘away goal’ rule and with our porous defence I don’t see us keeping the vital clean sheets needed for European success.

Tactically too, and whatever you currently think of him, I’d back Rodgers to get it right in the Premier League any day of the week before backing him to get it right in Europe. Saying all that, things may have changed come February and if we’re miles off the pace in the league I’d throw all our eggs into the Europa League basket. You never know, the treble may still be on! (Disclaimer: it won’t) Neil Poole

The Europa League has become our Champions League. Brendan should handle this tournament as he would CL football. Liverpool don’t just lay down in competitions. Want to ease pressure? Win this. Joseph Copeland

Needless to say finishing as high up in the league as possible has to be Rodgers’ priority. However, history will judge the Northern Irishman on tangible success — a trophy would be most welcome right now and the Europa League offers that opportunity. Furthermore with the Europa League, he can kill two birds with one stone and take the Champions League qualification spot it offers the winner. For all the magic the FA Cup offers and Liverpool’s current progress in the League Cup, the two domestic trophies must play second fiddle. Max Munton

The Europa matters in as much as it is another competition Liverpool are in and which they therefore have a chance of trying to win. The league is already too far away even if the team starts to pick up in the coming months so the cups are possibly Rodgers’ chance to bring silverware to the club and, perhaps, keep his job.

Europa is probably more worthy than League Cup – which didn’t keep Dalglish in a job – not as glamorous as the FA Cup. We need to keep progressing. So far the season feels like a step backwards. EL could alter that feeling. Steven Harris

Europa League is probably the worst thing that could have happened for the Reds. They will not just throw out a raw, inexperienced starting XI for the games, which will weaken what the XI looks like for league games.

All these tournaments require a tough road to get to the championship. Not only does it add to an already tough schedule, but conditions in some of these places are not ideal for games and also take more of a toll on players.

I believe that the Reds have a better chance of qualifying for a top four position in the league rather than trying to go for it all in Europa League. Despite the early struggles, they aren’t far off from a Champions League position and certainly have room for improvement in their game that can ensure a top four finish. – Matt Marchese

It was clear our supposed first team failed miserably in the champions league. I think the Europa League is our only hope to get back in the champions league. Rodgers has never won a trophy and to stay at LFC you need to deliver silverware. PJ Vaughan

I think it should be very important to Liverpool this season. With the inevitability of Liverpool’s Champions League demise, I think it’s comforting to approach the Europa League as a fresh, albeit less attractive, challenge.

Rodgers, so long as he lasts the winter, can use the comparatively lesser opposition to either blood his new, younger signings (Can, Moreno, Markovic) and craft a successful future, or go full-tilt for an enjoyable quest for a trophy. It’s a win-win, right? Jack Lusby

It’s a very tricky one. The emphasis has to be on the Premier League for now, and they have until February to see how many points adrift they are of fourth place, if any.

If the gap is around seven or eight points by then, Europa League should become the priority. The financial benefits of qualifying for next season’s Champions League are too good to miss out on. Henry Jackson

Given our record in European competition under Rodgers I think there’s a higher chance we finish fourth than win the Europa League. I can’t see us getting near the final. I can see the manager fielding a similar team to the one that lost away to Real Madrid. I’d have no problem with that. Joseph Cousins

The most frustrating aspect of the Europa League is the Sunday Premier League games, when our rivals have already put points on the board the previous day.

Having said that, we’re in it now, so let’s keep an open mind – Rodgers should use it to allow the likes of Markovic and Can to get some game time, while damaged egos can be restored if we’re allowed to bully some minnows. If we’re lucky, we can make it to the last 16 with that approach and by then we should have a good idea of how realistic our top-four hopes are. That’s when it’s time to decide how much of a priority it is. – Jamie Casey

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, November 21, 2012: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and Martin Skrtel during a press conference at Anfield ahead of the UEFA Europa League Group A match against BSC Young Boys. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

With a soft spot for this competition, I hope Rodgers gives it a go. A decent run could keep the season alive (it could all be over by early January if we lose to Bournemouth & Wimbledon). Right now winning it seems a tad unlikely, but get Sturridge back – add one or two new signings – and I believe we’ll have a chance – more so than finishing fourth. Simon Collings

I think the players owe it to themselves and the fans to give a huge effort in the Europa League. Rodgers built a squad in the summer capable of having three games a week but clearly not capable of getting through the group stages of the Champions League, so a strong showing in the Europa League is important.

Assuming Liverpool strengthen in January, on paper, they will have one of the strongest squads in the competition. Given that, maybe all Liverpool’s chips should be thrown into the Europa League. I honestly believe right now, looking at Liverpool’s fixtures and their confidence levels, that they could well be out of the League and FA Cup in the next few weeks, as well as 10/12 points off fourth place.

Call me a pessimist (which I am not), but this is the way I see it going right now unless anything changes. Liverpool may have to aim for the Europa League places in the Premier League and really go for it in the Europa League. Damage limitation….with a cup victory at the end of it. It’s been Liverpool’s motto over the last few years so why not end it with glorious victory in Poland. Andy Yates

Rodgers should give the Europa League a good go. It was going to be tough to finish in the top four anyway this season, and it has become even more difficult now that we’re playing catch-up. Yes, it will effect our League form through the horrendous Thursday-Sunday fixture schedule, but winning the Europa League could kill two birds with one stone; achieving cup success and qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Oliver Smith

I think Rodgers should take the competition seriously. It gives the team some much needed European experience and is another portal to retaining a Champions League place – something that’s vital to the modern day player and therefore recruitment. It may have a negative impact on the league table (if it can get any worse), but imagine if we won?

Rodgers will have claimed some much needed silverware and the club stays in the Champions League next season, which most of us fans had as our targets for the season. Suddenly the whole season wouldn’t be such a car crash after all, with lessons learned in order to bring the club back up to the required standard next season. Tom McMahon

After working so hard last season to return to the Champions League, turning our nose up at Europe’s sometimes considered ‘lesser competition’ would be a disgrace. In the shadow of last seasons high, Rodger’s men are struggling this year and the Europa League could provide ground to lift spirits and embed a bit of consistency.

Despite some under-performers, we have some impressive depth this season and the Europa League would be a great battleground to showcase this. Winning the competition and claiming a place in the Champions League, irrespective of finishing league position, would be an impressive achievement.

If anything, the tepid display at home to Basel cannot stand as Stevie’s last European appearance for Liverpool, it would be a travesty. Danny Gallagher

Liverpool in the Europa League: How seriously should Brendan Rodgers prioritise the competition?

Unknown   at  19:23  No comments

It’s the competition we didn’t want to be in – but with this season’s Europa League winners earning a place in next year’s Champions League, where should the competition rank among Brendan Rodgers‘ list of priorities this season?

Fernando Torres: Has been linked with January move to Liverpool

Fernando Torres: Has been linked with January move to Liverpool

AC Milan insist out-of-form striker Fernando Torres will remain at the club in January despite reports linking the Spaniard with a return to the Premier League.

Torres joined Milan this summer on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea but has failed to replicate the form he displayed during his time with both Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

The Spain international has scored just one goal in 10 league appearances for the Rossoneri and has not featured in Milan's last three Serie A games, increasing speculation that the club will look to offload Torres in the January transfer window.

When asked about that possibility, AC Milan club administrator Adriano Galliani told Sky Italia: "I don't think he (Torres) will leave even if the market is unpredictable."

Reports in England have linked Torres with a return to Liverpool, the club that sold him to Chelsea for £50million in January 2011.

Torres scored 81 goals for the Reds in 142 appearances during his three-and-a-half year spell at Anfield.

However, Galliani believes Torres still has to find his feet in Milan but is confident the Spaniard can succeed in Italy's top flight.

"Torres has been unlucky," Galliani said. "He has struggled with injuries and is coming from a different league.

"We need to be patient.

"He is important and will probably return (to top form)."

Milan, who are not competing in Europe this season, beat Napoli 2-0 on Sunday, with Torres not even included as a substitute on the bench.

The outcome, Milan's sixth win of the campaign, allowed the Rossoneri to climb to sixth in Serie A, 12 points adrift of league leaders Juventus.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted at 'issues' within the dressing-room as he admits their 'team ethos' has been lost.

The Reds suffered their seventh defeat of the Premier League season as they lost 3-0 to Manchester United on Sunday.

They are now down in tenth place - the season after coming so close to winning the title.

Rodgers said: "We have to recapture the team ethos. With the emphasis of the team, it is clear to me that we are searching to find solutions.

"The players are working hard, the players have given everything, they are pressing and they are working.

"In every dressing room there have always been been issues, but it is not something I discuss outside of the dressing room. The players are honest but we are not getting results.

"I can’t fault the commitment of the players because they gave everything.

"We didn’t deserve to lose, but we need to be more clinical.

"Their keeper got man of the match and that tells you everything. We created more chances against United than in the last five or six games but we are disappointed with the first and the third goal.

"The second one was clearly offside. With the players we had we did the best we could."

We round up Monday morning’s back pages and media reaction to Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester United — a seventh Premier League defeat of the season for Brendan Rodgers‘ side. Be warned, it’s not pretty.

It was a frustrating afternoon at Old Trafford for Liverpool and one which, by Rodgers’ own admission, summed up Liverpool’s season.

Two constants are running through the Reds’ 2014/15 campaign — huge errors at the back and a lack of firepower up front. Sunday’s defeat epitomised both of those characteristics.

Following Tottenham’s victory over Swansea later in the afternoon, Liverpool sit 10th in the Premier League table, looking a shadow of their former selves.

Liverpool will feel further infuriated with defeat on Sunday by the lack of quality their opponents showed, buts Michael Cox points out in The Guardian , United simply took their chances and had a heroic goalkeeping performance from David de Gea to thank for a clean sheet.

The match was settled by the quality of finishing and the quality of goalkeeping. Between the boxes this was a scrappy, uninspiring mess of a match. There were two massive contrasts – the coolness of United’s shooting compared with the timid nature of Sterling’s attempts, and Brad Jones’s strange habit of diving early, compared with De Gea’s imposing, commanding stance in one-on-one situations.

Ian Herbert of the Independent bemoans Dejan Lovren‘s transformation from a Southampton defender amongst the best in the Premier League to a weak drip in Liverpool’s leaky defence. He points the finger somewhat at Martin Skrtel.

It was Skrtel’s duty, in the middle of that back three today, to organise those on each side of him. Instead, the yard of space he granted Van Persie to leap and twist into the header that set up United’s second belonged to his serial failure to get tight on the strikers in front of him.

Phil McNulty, Chief Football Writer at BBC Sport, must have been chuffed with his headline, “Liverpool – from ruthless to toothless in nine months”, because he uses it again in his post-match comment.

His [Rodgers’] selection for the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United was his boldest yet – the sort of pick that would have been labelled a masterpiece had it resulted in success. But margins are fine, and missed chances, allied to the brilliance of De Gea, merely increased the pressure on the Northern Irishman.

United were ruthless, Liverpool toothless. They have scored 19 goals in 16 matches. At this point last year they had found the net 39 times.

Indeed, BBC Sport also draw to our attention this morning that it is Liverpool’s worst start to a league campaign in 50 years.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 14, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers during the Premier League match against Manchester United at Old Trafford. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Oliver Holt of the Daily Mirror tries to restore some order to proceedings, reminding Liverpool fans criticising Rodgers of his achievements earlier this year.

Last season, they may have scoffed privately at the psychological methods he spoke about so often.

This season, they are mocking them openly. It does not take a hostile stadium screaming at him to make him realise that opinion is turning against him.

It is to be hoped, for the club’s sake, though, that John W Henry and FSG hold their nerve and still their trigger finger.

Liverpool turn their attentions to the League Cup and a quarter-final trip to Bournemouth on Wednesday, but with one eye on the visit of Arsenal in the league next Sunday.

It could be a difficult festive fixture period for Liverpool fans, who may need to sit tight for reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Under-fire Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted his team lacked a killer touch in front of goal as they crumbled to defeat at Manchester United in Barclays Premier League action on Sunday.

Just nine months after Rodgers strutted out of Old Trafford following a 3-0 win, his team lost to their biggest rivals by the same margin thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie.

Gary Neville, Ronnie Whelan and Robbie Fowler criticised Liverpool this week and Rodgers’ critics will have further ammunition following this latest setback.

Rooney was unmarked as he swept home Antonio Valencia’s pass, and a comical error by B£20million defender Dejan Lovren allowed Van Persie to seal United’s biggest win over their rivals in six years.

Rodgers was more concerned about Liverpool’s attacking play than their defence. The Reds squandered a number of chances, although that was partly due to another excellent performance from David de Gea.

“It epitomised what our season has been,” the Liverpool manager said when asked to reflect on his team’s profligacy.

“They (United) were much more clinical when they needed to be.

“You come here and create so many chances. You would expect to score at least two or three.

“We have nowhere near enough goals in the team and that has put pressure on the team.”

The statistics suggests Rodgers is right.

Liverpool have scored 19 goals so far – 20 fewer than they had managed by this stage last year.

Rodgers feels something else is missing – the “team ethos” which carried the Reds to within two points of their first title in 24 years last term.

“The whole scenario was about looking to build a team again. We want to recapture the team ethos,” the Liverpool boss said when asked about his summer spending spree, which brought nine players to Anfield at a cost of B£115million.

“We had a team that was growing for a couple of years and has changed with injuries.”

A Capital One Cup quarter-final defeat to Bournemouth on Wednesday would pile more pressure on Rodgers, whose team now sit 10th in the league, 18 points shy of leaders Chelsea.

Brad Jones, who started ahead of Simon Mignolet at Old Trafford, will continue in goal until the Belgian rediscovers his form.

When asked whether 32-year-old Jones was now his first-choice goalkeeper, Rodgers said: “Yes. I said to Simon it was for an indefinite period.”

Glen Johnson said after the final whistle that he had torn his groin in the first half and he faces a spell on the sidelines.

Brendan Rodgers laments Liverpool’s lack of a clinical finish

MATCH : Manchester United Vs Liverpool (3-0)

Venue : Old Trafford

Date : 14.12.14

Ia sentiasa menjadi perlawanan

besar dan sentiasa dipenuhi penuh emosi dan perhatian.

PERMULAAN

Man.

Henderson dikerah bermain wingback.

Liverpol Bermula Baik

Gol Pertama.

Bermula dari save kemas De Gea , united keep the ball dan quick attack melalui wingback. Dengan Gerrard dalam walking pace

an tidak berminat untuk membantu closing down , Coutinho pula tida track back Rooney , ini kerana dia bukan defensive minded.

Shot Rooney gagal dibaca Jones, adakah kerana terlindung??

.

Namun ia disentak gol kedua sebelum rehat.

NO LUCK!

DE GEA

Collum khas untuk hero 3 mata perlawanan. Melakukan 7 key save semalam yang menggunakan pelbagai cara, punts , kaki rush into

the ball in the right time. De Gea wajar mengingati ini sebagai derby of his life. Tenang dan berjaya mengagak tindakan sterling

menyebabkan Liverpol pasrah setiap kali mencuba. 8 shot in goal dilakukan Liverpool semalam dan United cuma 6. Tapi United berjaya strike 3 gol. Walaupun Squawka dan Whoscored memilih RvP sebagai MOTM...saya memilih De Gea sebagai MOTM

UNITED KILLED THE GAME

mendesak back Liverpool drop deep. No mistake for player in RvP quality.

No Allen , No gerrard, yang sudah berada diatas dalam all attack formation.

STYLE OF PLAY

final third.

Liverpool berasaskan Coutinho. Pemain ini lebih kepada simple style football. Membawa bola dalam sistem pass and move.

APAPUN YNWA!

With Raheem Sterling struggling as a lone striker against Manchester United, Jack Lusby believes Brendan Rodgers made a mistake, despite his best intentions.

Football - FA Premier League - Manchester United FC v Liverpool FC

It was more of the same from Liverpool on Sunday, as a shocking defensive display and an on-goal profligacy saw Brendan Rodgers’ side pulverised in a 3-0 loss away to Manchester United.

What was more surprising was Rodgers’ team selection for the game.

Bold and brave, the manager deviated from his oft- leaned-on 4-2-3-1 formation, instead opting for a 3-4-2-1.

This included big calls such as replacing Simon Mignolet with back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones, dropping the recently effective midfield anchor Lucas Leiva, and fielding Raheem Sterling as a striker.

Unfortunately, these calls weren’t enough to throw United manager Louis Van Gaal, and his side’s attacking play capitalised on poor defending by Liverpool, with Wayne Rooney’s opener the highlight.

A few of these selection surprises have been called for by factors of the Liverpool support throughout this season, and it was Rodgers’ utilising Sterling in a striking role that stood out as this encounter panned out.

Unfortunately, however, it proved to be the right idea with the wrong execution by Rodgers at Old Trafford.

Raheem Sterling

Calls for Sterling to be used as a striker were initially sated in Liverpool’s 3-0 Champions League defeat to Real Madrid in October, and the 20-year-old looked lively in that encounter.

After that loss, Rodgers claimed this could be a plan for the future:

With United’s defence struggling for form and consistency amid a significant injury crisis, utilising Sterling as a forward, and tasking him with running at a shaky back line, was an inspired move by Rodgers.

Sterling did look effective in this sense, but was unfortunately let down by a worrying profligacy in front of goal.

With United goalkeeper David De Gea in fine form, Sterling was unable to find the back of the net, despite making the joint-most efforts on goal—with his five attempts matched only by United’s impressive Robin van Persie.

But was this all down to the 20-year-old?

Granted, Sterling’s finishing was poor, and his composure needs to be worked on, but his failure in front of goal was a composite creation to be placed within Rodgers’ tactical deficiency and Liverpool’s overall team disappointment.

Philippe Coutinho – Liverpool’s “Brain”

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho Correia in action against Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Key to the creation of chances for Sterling in this fixture, and in Rodgers’ formation, was clearly the inclusion of Philippe Coutinho in an advanced playmaking role.

The No. 10, when at his creative best, is the prime candidate for an attacking line set up to feed off quick, incisive through-balls, and unsurprisingly the midfielder played the most of any player in this encounter with two.

However, and it is telling in terms of Coutinho’s overall performance, neither of these were accurate.

Coutinho’s game was marred by consistently sloppy passing and an uncharacteristic lethargy—ignore whatever Gary Neville had to say about his failure to track Rooney for United’s opener, Coutinho is typically a diligent defender.

An overall passing accuracy of just 76.7 per cent represents a miserable performance from the Brazilian, who saw the most possession (6.8 per cent) of any player.

To put this into context, Sterling’s passing was accurate 88.5 per cent of the time on Sunday.

With a bullish Marouane Fellaini so effective as United’s holding midfielder, it was an unwise move for Rodgers to replace Liverpool’s other creative outlet in Lallana at half-time, and Coutinho continued to underperform in the second half.

When Coutinho is targeted, more often than not his creativity wilts.

Sterling struggled to convert chances mainly due to a lack of composure, as noted, but an inconsistent quality of service did not aid Liverpool’s cause.

Mario Balotelli’s Introduction

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Friday, September 26, 2014: Liverpool's Mario Balotelli in action against Everton during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Sterling running down attacking cul-de-sacs and chasing lost causes forced Rodgers’ hand at half-time, and the introduction of Mario Balotelli for the second half highlighted where his offensive game-plan was initially flawed.

While the £16 million summer buy was once again frustrating at times, with his arrogant long-range attempts and persistence when it comes to set-pieces, his introduction livened up the side.

In turn, this diverted attention from Sterling, and the pair combined well in the second half—but this came too late for Rodgers.

Poor defending, and a miserable defensive selection, surely lost the game for Liverpool.

However, while utilising Sterling as a striker in lieu of the tired Rickie Lambert was the right move, suffocating him of service—with Coutinho off-form due to United’s midfield pressure—and of a strike partner saw him fail in front of goal.

Balotelli showed glimpses of the striker that so impressed on his debut against Spurs, and using the No. 45 alongside Sterling’s movement from the start would have given United’s defence much more to think about.

Rodgers is clearly trying to shake things up at Liverpool, and in turn improve his side’s form, but doing things piecemeal—dropping Dejan Lovren one week, Mignolet the next—only hints at the solution.

Without Daniel Sturridge, Sterling is Liverpool’s most devastating attacking option, but he must be partnered up front.

Should Raheem Sterling be used as a lone striker again? Let us know in the comments below.

Raheem Sterling: Right Idea, Wrong Execution by Brendan Rodgers

Jamie Carragher believes Brendan Rodgers remains the man to lead Liverpool and claims it would be "nonsense" to change the manager at Anfield.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Sunday, May 19, 2013: Liverpool's captain Jamie Carragher making his 737th and last appearance for Liverpool during the final Premiership match of the 2012/13 season against Queens Park Rangers at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

After last season's runners-up finish in the Barclays Premier League, Liverpool have struggled in the current term and stand 10th in the table after 16 rounds of matches, already 18 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher is waiting to see whether the owners, headed by John W Henry, allow Rodgers time to put the team in a better order than they find themselves after Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Asked whether Rodgers is the right leader for Liverpool, Carragher said: "Yes, he is."

He acknowledges patience will run out if Liverpool do not improve, and Carragher sees potential trouble ahead, in the shape of a tricky trip to face Championship leaders Bournemouth in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Carragher told Sky Sports 1: "These new owners are different from the past people who were in charge, who always gave every manager – Roy Evans, Rafael Benitez, Gerard Houllier – five or six years.

"They were very quick with Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and (former director of football) Damien Comolli, so I think it has changed, the way of doing things from when I was there.

"But I think when you get rid of a manager halfway through a season, I think it's nonsense, I don't understand it.

"And also on the back of what Brendan Rodgers did last season. In the time I was playing I never played in a team who played that well or got that close to the title.

"But when after that you spend B£120million and make your worst start in 50 years, you're going to be under pressure.

"Now is not the time to be talking about the manager. The next two games – Bournemouth and Arsenal: Bournemouth could be a banana skin, it could be a very tough game, and so could Arsenal.

"But at the end of the season, judge this team and judge Brendan Rodgers then.

"What he did last year, I think he's got enough in the bank to get him through to the end of the season, but it's got to improve."j
