Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling may have been sent off, somewhat controversially, in England’s match against Ecuador on Wednesday, but his performances in training mean he is still in with a chance of starting their World Cup opener against Italy.
England face Honduras on Saturday night in their final warm-up game, but Sterling’s red card means he won’t be able to take part.
However, England boss Roy Hodgson has been impressed by the 19-year-old’s reaction to the dismissal and that he could still start against Italy in the World Cup opener a week today.
“His reaction to the red card has been excellent: he was unstoppable at times in training, some of the things he did out there were breathtaking and he’s not going to lose any fitness,” said Hodgson.
“The dilemma I have is that I have more than 11 players capable of taking the field against Italy but I don’t need to see a performance from Raheem on the field to know he’s capable of playing in the Italy game if selected.”
Hodgson also said how he didn’t think that Sterling’s red card was due to an act of ill-disciple.
Speaking of his reaction, Hodgson said “He was absolutely gutted to be sent off, as were we, but he doesn’t seem to have taken it to heart.”
“The most important thing is he’s still making me aware he’s a player who can inflict an awful lot of damage on the opposition.”
Would you start Sterling for England against Italy? Let us know in the comments below.

Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard says the current England squad is a much happier one than four years ago and has discussed his role as captain for club and country.
In a revealing interview with The Daily Mail, Gerrard spoke openly about his role as England captain at his second successive World Cup, while discussing the difficulty of the last one in South Africa when he was the stand-in skipper for Rio Ferdinand and following the John Terry controversy.
“I suppose I just didn’t feel like the proper captain,” he admits. Fabio Capello had originally given the captaincy to John Terry.
“At the time I was gutted he didn’t choose me but I wasn’t sitting in my room in tears because I knew I was going to play. I knew Capello liked me in that respect.
“And maybe he wanted a more vocal, in-your-face type of captain. That’s not really me. I’ll never be that type of captain because I don’t believe that is the right way to go about it.”
Comparing the current England squad to the one four years ago, Gerrard says “This group of players is great to be around, it is much more enjoyable.”
The 34-year-old discusses his new deep-lying-playmaker role at Liverpool and how it has benefited him.
There’s also praise for Jordan Henderson – “Duracell bunny” he calls him. “He’s got energy to burn. He’s a great athlete. And he does the dirty work as well as the more attacking stuff.
“He’s improved his all-round game to build on the fact that he’s a great athlete — his short passing, his long passing, and he’s getting his name on the score-sheet from time to time, setting a few up too.”

There’s a plethora of talent just sitting on the benches of some of Europe’s top clubs. PJ Vaughan investigates whether they would make worthy signings for Liverpool.
Transfer strategies
Liverpool’s transfer policy in recent years has had some great successes and shocking failures. Luiz Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho have proved to be great signings. While Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing were expensive mistakes.
The signings of Coutinho and Sturridge in January 2013 fitted FSG recruitment mantra perfectly. Both are young undervalued players with huge potential. Coutinho and Sturridge were fringe players at big clubs and were in and out of the side. They played in positions that were not their natural position and never got the opportunity to show their full potential. At Liverpool both have become star performers largely playing in their preferred positions.
Another policy adopted by Liverpool in recent years is finding the up and coming players. Mamadou Sakho, Jordan Henderson, Tiago Illori, Andy Carroll and Jose Enrique are good examples of how Liverpool has implemented this strategy.
Based on these ideologies I am going to look at 1.fringe players from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, that would be potentially excellent signings 2. players that may be ready to make the step up to the very highest level.
Fringe players that could be superstars
In recent years most of the big clubs in Europe stockpile talent. In my recent article “Making the grade Part 2”, I looked at squad sizes and excessive loans. There are lots of talented players at big clubs not playing enough football. When they do play it’s usually not in their favoured position.
Club | Fringe players |
---|---|
Real Madrid | Isco, Jese, Verane, Coentrao, Nacho, Illarra, Casemiro, Morata, Casillas |
Barcelona | Montaya, Tello, Song, Jonathon, Sergi Roberto, Adriano, Batra |
Bayern Munich | Sequiri, Martinez, Götze |
PSG | Pastore, Digane, Menez, Veretti |
Manchester City | Barry, Richards, Milner, Jovetic, Nastastic, Clichy, Navas |
Chelsea | Courtois, Lakaku, Kalas, Ake, Ba, Cole |
The following line up shows a potential line up of fringe players.
Some of these players might be happy to be fringe players as long as the club is winning titles. Others will eventually want to play week in week out.
Liverpool’s fringe players
I think Liverpool also have players that are not good enough to get into Liverpool’s first team, but would be star performers if they dropped down a level. Fabio Borini is a very good player but it’s far from certain that he will move ahead of Suarez and Sturridge.
Suso is probably similar. Suso is young but he needs to play centrally. There are a few players ahead of him in the queue at present. It’s clear both Borini and Suso could be stars if they are prepared to drop down a level.
Finding future stars
An alternative transfer policy is identifying players before they become superstars.
Liverpool tried to do that with Mohamed Salah, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and William to name just a few. While there is no guarantee that an emerging player will become a superstar, most of the big clubs in Europe will be looking for emerging talents.
The danger with signing an emerging talent is that merging stars are the players most likely to fail. Grahame Souness and Gerard Houllier both failed miserably with this policy. Souness signed the likes of Mark Wright, Dean Saunders, Mark Walters, Paul Stewart and Michael Thomas, none of which made the step up to the next level.
Houllier also failed with this strategy. There were very few Sami Hyypia’s and plenty signings like Salif Diao and El Hadji Diouf, whom were costly mistakes that ultimately cost him his job. While the signings of Gregory Vignal, Igor Biscan, Bruno Cheyrou were publicly lauded as the next “insert superstar name”, they ultimately made little impression.
Even in recent years there has being some great success yet equally big failures following this policy. Xavi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Javier Macherano, Peter Crouch, Jordan Henderson were huge success. Stewart Downing, Charlie Adam, Andy Carroll, Alberto Aquilani were huge failures.
Conclusion
It’s clear signing young fringe players from Europe’s top clubs is probably the safer option. However it is also a lot harder to sign these players, as rival clubs do not want to strengthen their opponents. While signing players that are ready to make the set up to the top level can be very hit and miss, these players are usually easier to acquire.
Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job last season coaching a small squad almost to the title. There is no guarantee a good coach necessarily signs good players. Hopefully with the transfer committee they will identify some top players either that are fringe players or players ready to make the step up. Hopefully they will sign more successes than failures.

Roy Hodgson admits he will find it hard to keep Raheem Sterling out of his starting XI for next week's World Cup opener with Italy.
The Liverpool winger is suspended for England's final warm-up game against Honduras on Saturday after he was sent off for a reckless challenge on Ecuador's Antonio Valencia.
Hodgson warned Sterling that he may have blown his chance of starting against Italy in Manaus on June 14 after seeing red in Wednesday's 2-2 draw.
However, Sterling has since responded positively in training and Hodgson now appears to have had a change of heart.
"His reaction has been excellent," Hodgson said.
"You the saw the games and the passing practice we did today and I thought he was unstoppable at times. Some of the things he did out there were quite breathtaking.
"I'm disappointed he won't play (against Honduras). I was going to start him, but it doesn't affect his chance of playing in the first team when the tournament starts.
"He's still making me aware he's a player who can inflict an awful lot of damage on the opposition. He is an exceptional talent, along with our other exceptional talents."
If anyone can take credit for the way Sterling has responded then it is his captain and Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard escorted Sterling off the pitch following his dismissal against Ecuador and told the 19-year-old he must not take the red card to heart.
His words seem to have had an effect and Gerrard said: "He's very resilient. He was the best player in training this morning.
"Straight away after the incident I spoke to him in the dressing room and I said it was important he put himself back in the frame for Italy, and he's done that."
Sterling went over the top of the ball and took out Valencia in the dying minutes of the 2-2 draw, and the Manchester United midfielder reacted by grabbing the Liverpool player by the neck.
Both were sent off and Jack Wilshere was lucky not to join them in the dressing rooms for striking out at Valencia in the melee that unfolded.
Hodgson has reminded his players there must be no such carry-ons in Brazil.
"We talked about (the incident) to be honest," he said.
"I don't think it was an ill-disciplined act. It was an over exuberant, slightly reckless act."

The 2013/14 season was undoubtedly one of the most entertaining Liverpool campaigns in recent years, with Brendan Rodgers‘ side eventually finishing in an impressive and unexpected second place.
For the first time in Premier League history, Liverpool entered the final day with a chance of winning the title.
Alas, it was not to be, but there were still plenty of memorable moments and highlights from individual players, team performances, goals galore and incredible victories.
Poetry In Motion was sung from the stands and that’s the title for our Season Review book which provides the complete story of the 2013/14 campaign – a perfect souvenir of the season.
Editor Karl Matchett recounts the games and goals, while providing an expert analysis of the tactics used by manager Brendan Rodgers.
There’s also a complete run down on the LFC squad, rating each player’s campaign and there expected squad status next season.
Neil Poole recalls the opening day drama of the win over Stoke City, while Andrew Lawrence provides first hand account of the magic moment in Melbourne’s MCG during pre-season.
There’s a review of the players out on loan, the academy and under 21s, plus the usual end of season best and worst awards.
“Poetry in Motion” captures the excitement and feeling of reawakening experienced by supporters over the course of the campaign.
- You can buy Poetry In Motion now, in paperback or for kindle – perfect for ready on a beach this summer!
Reviews:
Just got your #LFC end-of-season review book. The chapter on Rodgers’ tactics is well worth a Kindle.
A very solid overview of a tremendous season. Insightful tactical analysis make this a good addition to any Red’s library.

The foundations of what would become the Reds were put into place in March 1892, when John Houlding and his close associates split from Everton FC to create a brand new team.
Remaining at Anfield but requiring a different name to play under, Houlding and his friends agreed upon their vision, beginning with the first rule: &039;That the club be called Liverpool Football Club and shall play under the Rules of the Football Association.&039;
However, it was not until June 3 of the same year that the club - named Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited - was formally recognised by the Board of Trade, and the Reds were born when Houlding received the certificate above.
A total of 41 major honours, including 18 league championships and five European Cups, have since been won by Liverpool FC, who are still England&039;s most successful club.
