Yaya Toure: Without a goal or assist in four games

Yaya Toure's poor form and another unwanted first for Manchester United feature in our review of the weekend's Premier League statistics.

We look at the statistics from a Premier League weekend which saw Chelsea surrender their 100% record at Manchester City, and Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton all suffer shock defeats.

Queens Park Rangers 2 Stoke City 2

Mame Biram Diouf's goal was the first that Stoke City have scored before half-time in the Premier League this season.

After 10 Premier League appearances without a goal or assist, Peter Crouch scored & assisted for Stoke in this match.

The last three occasions that Crouch has scored and assisted in the same Premier League match have come against former sides (Aston Villa twice, QPR).

Six of Steven Caulker's eight Premier League goals have been headers.

Jordon Mutch's last six assists in the PL have come in home games (five for Cardiff and one for QPR).

Niko Kranjcar scored his first Premier League goal since February 2012.

Kranjcar has now scored three Premier League goals against Stoke City; making them his favourite opponents in the competition.

Stoke are now unbeaten in their last five Premier League away games (W2 D3); their best run since April 2010 (six games). Indeed it is only the second time in PL history that they have gone five away games without defeat.

Daniel Agger: Defender left Liverpool and returned to Brondby in the summer

Daniel Agger: Defender left Liverpool and returned to Brondby in the summer

Daniel Agger insists he left Liverpool because of a rift with Brendan Rodgers and did not feel 'appreciated' by the Reds manager.

The Denmark defender had been a preferred choice of previous Anfield bosses, but he called time on his Reds career after falling out of favour last season.

Agger returned to former club Brondby in the summer after eight years on Merseyside and claimed he could no longer work with Rodgers after a breakdown in their working relationship.

"Let me put it this way, me and the manager were perhaps not on the same page last season. For most of the season at least," he told Danish sports channel TV3 SPORT.

"He and I maybe went wrong with each other because I am very direct. I say things as they are, so I expect people will be the same to me. Maybe it's wrong to expect this sometimes.

"There was much (distance) between us, and for me it was just enough. I felt he didn't appreciate the things I could do and contributed. When I feel that, then it's time to move on.”

Agger was unable to hold down a regular role in the last campaign, despite featuring in some impressive wins, including both Premier League victories over Manchester United.

The 29-year-old Denmark international felt that Rodgers did not value his contribution, forcing him to consider his future.

“When you are a part of the starting 11 for several games in a row and the team have performed well, and you feel that you have played well, then you are left out of the team and don’t feel appreciated, it starts to prey on your mind and you wonder," he said.

“Then at the same time you see the statistics from your game - which are so important all around the world of football - and you don’t understand why you weren’t used more often.”

But Agger still respects the coaching abilities of Rodgers, who so nearly ended the club’s long wait for a league title.

"I think he is an incredibly talented manager. You can't take that away from him. He's good in the way he trains and he is clever in the way he sets the team up. He's an extremely, extremely competent coach," he added.

"The things that went wrong between us is that I say things the way they are and I expect others to treat me the same way. Maybe it is wrong to always expect this.”

Liverpool: Look on as Gabriel Agbonlahor scores

Liverpool: Look on as Gabriel Agbonlahor scores

Mark Holmes assesses the problems of the Liverpool and Manchester clubs, blasts some inconsistent refereeing, but praises Newcastle's fans.

Problems widespread among top clubs

Where on earth do you start in summing up that weekend of Premier League football? The self-proclaimed 'best league in the world' almost always throws up at least one talking point per game week, but the start to this season has been quite extraordinary.

Liverpool, last season's runners-up, have lost three of their first five games. Manchester City, the reigning champions, have won only two of theirs, as have Tottenham, while new-look Manchester United and ever-consistent Everton have just one win to their names.

Conversely, Southampton sit in second place despite having the heart of their team ripped out over the summer, while Aston Villa, among the relegation favourites before a ball was kicked, are just below them in third.

Rather than attempt to look for crises, it would perhaps be more sensible to acknowledge this pattern will not continue for much longer.

There are clearly problems for Brendan Rodgers, Louis van Gaal and co. to address, but quality will ultimately tell over 38 games. Chelsea are understandably most people's tip for the title, but Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham will almost certainly complete the top seven behind the Blues. Despite the crazy start to the season, it would take a brave man to predict anything different.

However, with problems so widespread among those six clubs aside from Chelsea, foreseeing the exact order of them at this stage is rather more difficult.

Manchester City boast the only squad that comes close to Chelsea's in terms of quality depth, but their struggle to break down Jose Mourinho's men on Sunday will certainly have concerned Manuel Pellegrini after they had failed to find their way past a similarly obdurate Stoke City side in their previous home game.

The Chilean's comments after the Chelsea game may have been equally concerning for the club's supporters.

"I said last week that it will be very difficult for us to defend the title because every team will play the way Chelsea did," he said.

Concerning because it is hardly a tactic City are only just having to deal with at the Etihad Stadium, yet Pellegrini seemed to be suggesting it is a tactic his side are going to struggle with this season. They were not the comforting words the Blues faithful will have wanted to hear.

Similarly, Liverpool fans will not have been jumping for joy to hear Rodgers discuss the difficulties of competing on two fronts after the Reds followed up a Champions League win over Ludogorets with a Premier League defeat to West Ham.

"It's a tiring competition," said the Northern Irishman.

He is right, of course, but the procurement of eight new players over the summer was meant to relieve such stresses on the squad.

Perhaps Rodgers' mistake has been integrating new players to a successful side too quickly. Six of the summer signings started in the recent defeat to Aston Villa - injuries and the sale of Luis Suarez notwithstanding, such a drastic change was surprising given the success of last season's side.

Arguably even more worrying is that the biggest change has taken place in the defence, which was a problem area last term yet has looked no less of one in the early part of this campaign.

Rodgers' vow to work on defending set pieces will have come as a relief to fans, but many are now beginning to question the role of Steven Gerrard in protecting the back four. The stutters of rivals is allowing Rodgers time to get to the bottom of the problem, but get to the bottom of it he certainly must do if Liverpool are to challenge for the title again.

Although they struggled last season, it is arguably the early poor form of Manchester United under new manager Louis van Gaal that has attracted most attention of all.

The big worry for the Red Devils is clearly that, having spent a huge amount of money in the transfer window, they have addressed the problem of creativity and goalscoring, netting seven times in two games, but have merely replaced attacking issues for defensive ones, with Leicester City putting five past them on Sunday.

Like Liverpool, United's backline is vastly different to last season, and Van Gaal will hope that the problems so far are simply a case of new players bedding into the team - and existing ones getting to grips with a new system and way of playing.

Given the amount of changes they have made, the problems at Old Trafford are arguably the least surprising and least worrying of all the top teams, but that should not detract from the fact that Van Gaal has some serious work to do on the training ground to avoid a second consecutive season without Champions League football.

For Tottenham, the problems are familiar. They won their opening two games only to be dismantled by the first top team they faced, Liverpool, and then followed up a Europa League game with a desperately disappointing Premier League performance which resulted in a 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.

The side that started against Albion showed 10 changes to the one which started against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night, yet Spurs looked leggy, short of ideas, and were deservedly beaten.

Whether the problem be related to the Europa League or simply to breaking down resolute opponents, it is one Mauricio Pochettino needs to work out if he is to avoid going the way of so many previous Spurs bosses under Daniel Levy.

Everton's inconsistent start, meanwhile, is perhaps the most surprising of all, and certainly the hardest to explain.

Roberto Martinez has changed little at Goodison Park, but nine goals conceded in two home games would certainly suggest there is a problem defensively. Were those goal-laden defeats to Chelsea and Crystal Palace simply early-season anomalies? Is age getting the better of the Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin partnership? Is there a different problem altogether?

Martinez will be keen to find out the answers sooner rather than later, but the Premier League has been so brilliantly unpredictable so far this season that we're likely to be mulling over a completely different set of questions this time next week.

Refereeing shambles

While it was a bad weekend for many of the big clubs, it was equally bad for many of the country's top referees.

There seemed to be big decisions in every Premier League game leaving various teams feeling hard done by this Monday morning, but the ones that have understandably attracted the most attention were those to award Leicester their first penalty against Manchester United and to send off Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta for a second yellow card against Chelsea.

At the King Power Stadium, Mark Clattenburg's decision to penalise Rafael for bringing down Jamie Vardy was not actually that controversial. It was the sort of soft penalty I have said already this season should be stamped out, but it is common to see referees blow up when a forward gets in front of a defender and falls to the floor following contact. Rightly or wrongly, those sort of penalties are given regularly.

The controversy, of course, came because Vardy had got away with giving Rafael a much stronger and much more obvious shove seconds before to get himself into the position. You will struggle to ever witness a referee showing such a lack of inconsistency in such a short space of time.

The Zabaleta red card, meanwhile, was yet another example of a yellow card being shown too easily. The second booking he received was fair, but they are being handed out so easily these days that far too many players are seeing red for two pretty minor infringements.

It is a subject that always divides opinion on these pages - some will argue that the rules are there to protect players, and that Zabaleta, for example, only has himself to blame for committing a risky challenge whilst on a yellow card - but surely every football fan would prefer games to finish 11v11 unless absolutely necessary?

Unfortunately, the results of far too many games are being affected by soft decisions, and the situation looks certain to get worse rather than better.

Praise for Newcastle fans

Regular readers will know I am not the biggest fan of Alan Pardew, but I find it ridiculous that any manager should find himself under pressure after just four games of a league season.

In Pardew's case, it must be particularly galling that, having kept the club in the Premier League despite a lack of transfer funds, some fans have given him remarkably little time to bed in new signings after finally being allowed to spend some money.

A massive well done must go, therefore, to the vast majority of Newcastle fans that ignored the 'Sack Pardew' protests during Saturday's game against Hull City to instead focus on giving the team the support it needed.

It paid off in the end, and the likelihood is that Newcastle will soon begin to climb the table and make the early-season panickers look rather foolish.

Monday Moan: Problems rife at top clubs

Ben Twelves takes a look at how Liverpool’s loaned players fared for their temporary clubs throughout the last week.

origi

Divock Origi

After firing Lille to the top of French Ligue 1 last Sunday, Liverpool’s Belgian talent couldn’t replicate that feat on Thursday night, as his side opened their Europa League campaign with a 1-1 draw at home against Krasnodar.

The 19-year-old played all 90 minutes of the fixture against the Russian side – starting in a front two alongside strike-partner Nolan Roux – but he endured a largely quiet game and was restricted to only a couple of flashes of brilliance.

After playing the full match on Thursday night, Origi was dropped to the bench on Sunday afternoon as Rene Girard freshened up his side for their return to league action at home to Montpellier.

The Liverpool loanee came on as a substitute in the second half on the hour mark, but struggled to have an impact and couldn’t influence the score-line as the game ended 0-0, keeping Lille unbeaten after six league matches.

Joao Carlos Teixeira

Liverpool’s Portuguese midfielder was dropped to the bench by Sami Hyypia as the Brighton boss rotated his squad, making five changes to his team who went on to slump to a 2-0 defeat against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.

With his side 1-0 down and time running out, the former Liverpool captain turned to the young loanee to drag his side back into the game – throwing Teixeira on with 87 minutes played – but it proved a thankless task as the home side scored their second of the game just a minute later to wrap the game up.

Saturday saw Teixeira recalled to the starting XI for Brighton in their match against Blackpool, where he began on the left then switched to the right of a front three. He produced a creative performance for his loan side, making three chances that frustratingly weren’t finished off, before being subbed just after the hour mark in a game that ended goalless.

Jordon Ibe

For the second game running, Ibe started on the bench for loan-club Derby on Tuesday night, but the pacey youngster came on as a second half substitute into a three man attack with just over 15 minutes remaining, in the Rams’ impressive 3-2 win away against Blackburn.

However, Saturday saw Ibe’s tenure at the club spark into life, as he came off the bench in 53rd minute , produced an excellent performance and scored for County in their 2-2 draw with Cardiff City.

Just 8 minutes after entering the action, the 18-year-old latched onto a loose ball in the box and slammed home into the bottom right corner, dragging his side back into the match with a goal which provided the catalyst to claim a point from 2-0 down.

Andre Wisdom

Wisdom started his fifth league game of the season for West Brom and helped them to record their second clean sheet and first win of the campaign after battling to an excellent 1-0 victory at White Hart Lane over Tottenham.

The Reds’ loanee started and finished the match at right back rather than being switched to the opposite position as previously and he produced a solid defensive performance for Alan Irvine’s struggling side.

Iago Aspas

Europa League holders Sevilla began their defence of the title with a 2-0 win over Feyenoord on Thursday night – a fixture that saw Aspas’ enter proceedings as a second half substitute.

With the home side already 2-0 up, the 27-year-old loanee replaced Colombian striker Carlos Bacca on the hour mark, and played as the central figure in a three man attack – with Barcelona loan man Gerard Deulofeu and Jose Antonia Reyes either side of him. The Spaniard didn’t have much of an impact on the game, but worked hard for his team as they saw out the victory.

After a promising half an hour cameo on Thursday, Aspas was disappointingly an unused substitute once again for Unai Emrey’s side away at Cordoba on Sunday evening, a game that his side won 3-1 to climb to second in the table.

Luis Alberto

Spanish midfielder Alberto started for Malaga and played 67 minutes in their 2-2 draw away against bottom side Espanyol on Saturday evening.

The 22-year-old claimed his first league assist of the season by setting up his sides’ first goal of the night, when his excellently delivered corner was well headed home by Igancio Camacho after half time to draw his team level.

Elsewhere

Brad Smith

Australian international, Smith, played 85 minutes of Swindon’s 2-2 draw at home to Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night, as his side moved to within a point of the play-off positions in League One.

The 20-year-old produced another fine performance on Saturday however, and he claimed two assists and played the full match in his team’s 5-2 demolition of former Premier League club Sheffield United at the County ground.

Tiago Ilori

The stylish Portuguese youngster dropped to the bench and was an unused substitute for his loan side Bordeaux in their 2-1 victory over Evian on Friday night.

Oussama Assaidi

Liverpool’s Moroccan winger was an unused substitute for Mark Hughes’ Stoke in their 2-2 draw against QPR in Saturday’s early afternoon kick off.

Sebastian Coates

Uruguayan centre back Coates didn’t feature in the match squad once again for Sunderland as they played out a goalless draw away at winless Burnley.

Rafael Paez

20-year-old Spanish centre back Paez played his third game for Bologna in their 2-0 home loss against Crotone in Serie B on Friday night.

Liverpudlian calls for calm despite the disappointing start to the new season for Liverpool.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 20, 2014: Liverpool's Raheem Sterling celebrates scoring the first goal against West Ham United during the Premier League match at Upton Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Ok we’ve had a bad start but some of you need to calm the f**k down. Last season saw us play some of the most exhilarating attacking play since the Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge era, but going into the new term without our talisman allied to a host of new faces meant this was never gonna be straight forward and those predicting a cakewalk to the Premier League were living in cloud cuckoo land.

75% of our defence is new, as is 75% of our attacking options. 75% of our midfield are playing like they are still on their jollies and haven’t got used to their new playmates yet and 75% of our squad have had little niggling injuries.

Add to that the fact that 75% of us are still not sure about out goalie and it means that only a small percentage are playing like we know they can.

Scratchy wins, deserved defeats and only the odd glimpse of anything substantial was synonymous with Brendan Rodgers‘ first season in charge and there are alarming echoes as the dashing cavalier style exhibited last year has reverted to the over indulgent slow passing we saw then.

Of course it is understandable as everyone gets used to new formations, new tactics and new personnel but although most of us are pleased with the people we have brought in, individual mistakes and inconsistencies have cost us big time. Apart from Spurs then, you have to concede that every one of our opponents have looked better prepared than us already at this stage of the season and that is a worry that our backroom staff should be concerned about.

Three defeats already then and that top four place will become a bridge too far if we keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

We got away with murder last year in acquiring second place with about thirteen players and to a certain extent, the team picked itself. The squad has been expanded beyond all recognition now with the increased demands of Europe and the ability to bring £20 million players on to change the course of the game should see us being able to cope with a lack of form and fitness but it doesn’t need the Sky Sports experts to tell us it ain’t working at the mo.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 13, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers looks dejected as his side lose 1-0 at home to Aston Villa during the Premier League match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

It is not an exact science though and progression does not necessarily have to be uniform in our quest to get back to the top. The manager is constantly trying to temper expectations and I believe, in him, we have one of the finest young students in the game. He is never afraid of trying things or to act quickly if things are going awry on the park.

Only Messrs Carragher, Neville and some of the dickheads writing into the various forums or phoning the radio shows know more than Brendan, so let’s all just keep our powder dry and let’s see how the season progresses and the squad gels before proclaiming “everything is the worse” eh?

Brendan Rodgers menyatakan 2 sebab utama kekalahan Liverpool ialah

1. Kurang intensity

2. Terlalu banyak Long Passes

"kami kurang intensity berbanding mereka dan pemain saya bermain terlalu banyak hantaran jauh, ia agak mengejutkan kerana kami biasanya bermain hantaran rendah. Tapi saya lega sebab memiliki kelompok pemain yang sentiasa improve untuk menjadi lebih baik. Musim lepas anda Tanya soalan yg sama mampukah kami menjaringkan gol yang cukup ,dan kami berakhir dengan 101 gol. Tapi Kali ini kami perlu kerja keras sikit"

Adam Griffies takes a look at Liverpool’s defeat to West Ham from his own, unique perspective.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 20, 2014: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers and West Ham United's manager Sam Allardyce during the Premier League match at Upton Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

So this is what it’s like to be a proper European club. I’d forgotten; five years is a long time (Europa League doesn’t count). The trip to West Ham is our third game in seven days, and each one is crucial. Bang bang bang. Forget fatigue, it feels fantastic.

It may feel fantastic, but I’m also anxious. It’s West Ham away. It’s Sam Allardyce. It’s hustle and bustle. Any game against an Allardyce team sits on the fixture list every season, adorned in devil horns. I dread it. But come on Reds; let’s show them how good at football we are.

Joe Allen’s continued absence doesn’t help to negate my nerves. The Welshman is pivotal to our style of play, particularly in the diamond. His incessant shuttling up, down, and sideways to cover his full-back is invaluable. He’s the type of player who you don’t appreciate properly until he is out of the side. Having said that, incredibly, some people still don’t appreciate him and I doubt ever will. Leave them to it.

The team is worrying to look at. Martin Skrtel comes straight back in after injury, replacing Mamadou Sakho, which is disheartening. Fabio Borini and Lucas Leiva go from having one foot out of the door in the summer (two feet and a hand in Borini’s case) to starting a game weeks later. Strange. We have a few injuries – I get that – but surely there are other other options. Raheem Sterling has the skillset to slot seamlessly into a forward role. I’d love to see him partner Mario, with Adam Lallana, Phil Coutinho or Lazar Markovic pulling the strings behind them.

Within 10 minutes (seven to be painfully precise) my fears are justified. We’re two down and we look horribly disjointed. We’re getting bullied. Allardyce loves it. Big fat Allardyce.

I’m not overly surprised though. And I’m not one to whine about team and manager after a poor performance with unnecessary relish and vitriol, so I’ll probably keep this short.

LONDON, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 20, 2014: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard looks dejected as West Ham United score the third goal during the Premier League match at Upton Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

A change of system to 3-5-2 improves things slightly and Sterling, who’s now shifted to right wing-back, smashes us back to within a goal.

That proves to be the highlight of our day. We look devoid of ideas and subsequently, West Ham are reasonably comfortable.

Can we really expect any more when two of our four midfielders are passengers? Lucas waddles about for 45 before being replaced. He looks frighteningly off the pace. Gerrard fairs no better in his third game in seven days. I’m not going out of my way to make excuses for our captain, but he simply shouldn’t be starting three football matches in seven days at the age of 34. Especially when none of those games have been against a particularly strong team. He needs to be managed better. Pick and choose his starts; get the best out of him in short, sharp bursts.

“Hull away last season” I say to my mate. He nods, mournfully. This performance is all too Hull-away-last-season. Not just because of the final score, but because of our lack of organisation, spirit and imagination. There’s no identity to our play. It’s messy. It’s sluggish. We’re weary.

Identity is the keyword there, I think. Brendan Rodgers came to Liverpool Football Club with a clear and uncompromising football philosophy. Possession, possession, possession. Over time that seems to have fizzled out, departed.

Pragmatism has crept into our game. A pragmatism which last season seemed acceptable given we found ourselves on the cusp of history. We relied heavily on individuality and I’m not convinced that’s what Brendan gets a kick out of. His Swansea side, for instance, were a fluent outfit who moved the ball with an assured swagger and precision.

Now Luis has gone (and with a busier schedule), we won’t be as effective playing constantly at 100 miles per hour. It’s time to revert back. I want precision back in our game. Controlled football matches. Clean sheets. 2-0s. I love 2-0s.

Let our rivals drown in the mad games. Like they have today, as I write. Leicester 5-3 Man Utd. Everton 2-3 Crystal Palace. Excellent. Weekend salvaged, to an extent. The Premier League is incredibly weird. I suppose I better mention Chelsea’s draw at the Etihad for the optimists. Two points dropped each.

So yeah, we lost yesterday. We were terrible. Allardyce laughed at us. Fat Allardyce. But none of our rivals are setting the world alight, and we will improve. Daniel Sturridge knows we will improve. Joe Allen knows we will improve. Emre Can knows it too.

Put West Ham behind you. We’ve got another game of footy on Tuesday. Jesus. Then some other little thing on Saturday. It’s madness. Embrace it.

West Ham 3-1 Liverpool: Allardyce Is Laughing at Us

Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has spoken about his departure from the club after eight seasons, having returned to Brondby last month.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Wednesday, January 1, 2014: Liverpool's Daniel Agger celebrates scoring the first goal against Hull City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Agger started 18 games in his final season at the club, with new signing Mamadou Sakho often the preferred choice as Martin Skrtel’s centre-back partner.

Speaking in an interview on Danish TV, Agger claims that his relationship with Brendan Rodgers broke down last season: “The manager and I probably weren’t on the same page last season, for the majority of the season.

“I felt very distanced to him, and to me that was just enough. I feel he didn’t appreciate my qualities and my contributions.”

Scroll down to watch the interview below

Agger claims there “weren’t many conversations” between him and the manager.

The Dane claims that he was unhappy even at training, knowing that he would be dropped even if he thought he had performed well:

“When you been a part of the starting eleven for several games in a row and the team have performed well, and you feel that you have played well yourself, then when you’re left out of the team and don’t feel appreciated, it starts to get into your mind, you wonder.

“When you at the same time see the statistics from your game, which are so important all around the world of football, then you don’t understand why you weren’t used more often.”

However, Agger had words of praise for Rodgers too:

“I think he is a great manager, you can’t take that away from him. He’s good in the way he trains the team and he is great at setting up the team. The things that went wrong between us is that I say things the way they are and I expect others to treat me the same way. Maybe it is wrong to always expect this.”

Agger also took what could be perceived as a shot at Luis Suarez, questioning the loyalty of a lot of players in football:

“At least I have learned a lot from last year. I have learned that a lot of players in the world of football only think of what is best for themselves. I haven’t done that for the biggest part in my career. But with all that has been said and done and understand why players think think this way, even though it has been something I couldn’t relate to in the past. It has been an eye opener.”

Watch the interview (in Danish):

Agger made 232 appearances for Liverpool, having arrived from Brondby in 2006.
