Despite plenty of recent rumours suggesting Lucas Leiva was set for a move to Inter Milan, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the Brazilian is staying at Anfield.
Despite the 28-year-old’s impressive reintegration into the Reds team in recent months, his exit seemed extremely likely last week, especially after the midfielder posted a cryptic goodbye message on his twitter account.
Rodgers spoke to the press on Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s clash against Aston Villa at Villa Park, and confirmed that Lucas was staying put, for the rest of the season at least.
“No, he (Lucas) is not one that we would want to lose in January. There will be speculation over the course of the month on a lot of players.
“It is not something I would be willing to do in January. Of course at the end of the season everything is looked at again but the team is in a good momentum.
“We have had nothing from them (Inter). I think he’s just enjoying playing and he’s playing very well.”
The Brazilian has been a big reason for Liverpool’s upturn in fortunes of late, and the only game they have lost in their last 13, away to Manchester United, was the only match he hasn’t started in that time.
In the long-term there may be younger, more dynamic defensive midfield option than Lucas, but for now he remains an integral part of Rodgers’ starting eleven.

Forward Lazar Markovic was first to shine with a number of impressive cameos, culminating in the 20-year-old's maiden league goal since a £20million move from Benfica which beat Sunderland last weekend.
Emre Can, whose disappointing first half of the season was disrupted by injury, has found a position for himself on the right side of a back three but has shown his versatility with occasional roles in midfield.
The German, who turned 21 this week, is a product of Bayern Munich's youth system and arrived in a £10million deal with high expectations after one season at Bayer Leverkusen.
Rodgers believes keen Liverpool watchers are only now starting to see his potential.
"He will need a bit of time moving to a new country as a young player," said Rodgers.
"You have to remember he had only one full year of playing even though he had come through the system at Bayern Munich.
"I think he has shown his value and I think there is no doubt he will prove to be a real bargain for us.
"It was a lot of money for a young player but he is a wonderful talent, great footballer, his stature and power is well suited to the Premier League, he is two-footed, has great balance and good aggression in his game and for me is multi-functional.
"He will prove to be a player who can play in a number of positions very well here and as you have seen since he came in here he has been outstanding.
"He actually played in three positions against Sunderland: he started on the right side of a back three, we moved him up to play in the top of the midfield box and then put him back into a wide midfield role.
"It was one of the reasons we brought him here.
"He is a footballer and sometimes you find the very best footballers can play in any position and they are capable of working the game out."
Versatility is often more of a curse than a blessing, as team-mate Jordan Henderson discovered in 2011 when he arrived from Sunderland as a 21-year-old with a £16million price tag to justify.
However, Can believes in his case it will prove to be a blessing.
"It has always been the case that I have played in different positions," he told liverpoolfc.com.
"It's an advantage for the team to have a player like that and it's an advantage for me personally as well.
"My favourite position is central midfield and the manager knows that but if I get a chance to play and help the team I will happily play at the back.
"I think I've performed well and shown what I can do, but I need to keep on improving, and I hope I get a lot more games."
Rodgers spent £120million in the summer and most of his signings have come in for criticism in one form or another after failing to hit the ground running.
Dejan Lovren was brought in to be the new linchpin of the defence but struggled with the expectation on his shoulders and the 25-year-old has been sidelined in recent weeks, but even he earned a vote of confidence from Rodgers.
"Dejan will prove in his time he is as very good player," Rodgers added.
"You have seen it over many years at the big clubs; some players will settle in straight away and some take a bit of time.
"He is still very young for a central defender but he will prove to be an outstanding player.
"This whole year's experience for him as a Liverpool player will benefit him and over the coming months and years he will show what a top player he is."
Liverpool, still short of goals, head on Saturday to Aston Villa who despite their apparent struggles have conceded just 23 goals in 21 matches and only 11 in 10 at home. Villa won 1-0 at Anfield in September.
"They are a tough team to break down. They may not have scored a lot of goals, which has been highlighted, but they don't concede many either," said Rodgers.
"We had a difficult game against them earlier in the season where we conceded from a sloppy corner and just couldn't make the breakthrough.
"But we are on the back of four wins away from home and there is good momentum and confidence in the team."

Fahami apa makdsud counter attack. Counter attack ialah perihal menyerang balas selepas diserang. Maksudnya, build up serangan adalah daripadabola yang dirampas di kawasan sendiri/defensive third. Sistem yang dipercayai mula bertapak di Eropah selepas era revolusi 4-4-2 di England.
Saya pernah huraikan tentang apa 4-4-2 dalam penulisan transkrip kuno saya di KPLM yang saya sendiri gagal jejaki. 4-4-2 adalah sistem yang lebih balance dan ia dicipta untuk menghalang kehebatan pasukan latin seperti Brazil dan juga pasukan modern football seperti Holland yang menggunakan total football.4-4-2 sangat balance di semua kawasan.Jumlah pemain yg sama antara zonal. Classic Quick Counter
Dalam sistem classic quick counter attack. Biasanya jarak antara attacker dan defenders agak wide dan jauh. Compactness cuma tinggi di area luar kotak penalti dan ke bawah. Defensive Midfielder/ Holding Midfielder akan menjadi pemain yang paling agresif untuk pressure pihak lawan. Kebiasaannya akan 2 pemain di holding role sama ada memang, CMF mahupun AMF semua perlu faham akan tugas bertahan. AMF Akan turun deep untuk bertahan.Walaupun AMF secara teknikal bukan solid tackler tetapi mereka perlu juga turun.
Zinedine Zidane, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Francessco Totti, Paul Scholes antara nama AMF/ Box to Box Player yang akan membantu di deep area. Pada basicnya, mereka turun untuk menerima bola dari backline untuk dihantar atau dilarikan ke kawasan lawan. Pada basicnya, mereka turun untuk menerima bola dari backline untuk dihantar atau dilarikan ke kawasan lawan. Quick Counter Melalui Flank/Wing/wide
Saya suka mengambil contoh England kerana mereka adalah pasukan yang masih mengekalkan corak quick conunter dari winger ketara. Isu Gerrard Lampard terus menjadi bualan. Siapa patut di AMF. Ini kerana AMF akan berperanan sebagai extra striker/ second striker dalam sistem 4-5-1. Gerrard dari segi teknikal lebih baik daripada Lampard untuk mengisi role AMF dalam 4-5-1 namun disebabkan Lampard yang sangat lemah attribute bertahan menyebabkan plan B iaitu Gerrard di deep dan Lampard di Atas sebagai lebih ideal. Pada masa yang sama Lampard juga Goalscorer tetapi ketika prime Gerrard lebih mobility.
Pada Piala Dunia Brazil, Rooney diletakkan di role AMF untuk melengkapkan isipadu 4-5-1 yang dikehendaki. Rooney agile , keras dan laju. Sayang sekali Gerard dan Lampard di generasi yang sama. Gerrard bagi saya berhak bermain di AMF lebih kerap cuma saya tak nak nafikan hak Lampard yang nyata memilki goalscoring record lebih baik. Cuma sistem 4-5-1 ini ke lebih baik jika AMF adalah mobilizer yang boleh masuk ke final third lebih cepat.
Grid training pitch yang saya sertakan jelas menujukkan bahawa winger akan ke kawasan hingga ke corner flag untuk supply cross. Sistem ini diimplementasi England dengan seorang Box To Box player yang menjadi enjin di tengah.
Quick Counter melalui chanel Tengah/Center Attack
Ketika kegemilangannya , Zidane antara AMF player yang paling bahaya dalam sistem ini. Tak kisah untuk Perancis , Juve mahupun Real Madrid. Zidane akan melarikan bola dan tidak akan melepaskan bola secepat mungkin ke arah wide area. Dia berupaya memegang bola dan menyusup ke hole area. Dalam sistem ini , AMF seperti Zidane sangat unpredictable atau sukar diramal. Pertahanan tak mampu mengagak sama ada dia akan
1. releasing wide players
2. Melepaskan through ball kepada top striker ataupun
3. masuk ke kotak penalti untuk melakukan gol / sitter/set up/ lay off kepada striker
4. melakukan shot dari luar kotak atau clinical area.
Evolusi ini yang cuba diterapkan banyak pasukan di Eropah selepas Perancis 1998. AC Milan pernah menggunakannya dengan Kaka. Dimana , AMF akan menjadi false 9 dan mampu melarikan dan memegang bola , shots dan sebagainya. Liverpool dibawah Rafa Benitez hampir memenangi kejuaraan Liga pada 08/09 dengan meletakkan Gerrard sebagai False 10. Role yang hampir sama dengan Zidane dan Kaka di kelab masing masing.
Zidane pernah meminta agar kelab mendapatkan Gerrrad mungkin kerana Gerrard mampu swicth formation dengan beliau dan mewujudkan lebih mazzy movement di centre final third. Di Perancis Zidane ada support daripada box to box Makelele dan sudah pasti Gerrard adalah addition yang terbaik jika Real Madrid Mendapatkan Beliau. Gerrard akan menghadirkan ancaman extra daripada belakang dikala Zidane on ball situation.
2 sistem ini sangat biasa dan bukan kompleks cuma technical abilities dan penyudah klinikal yang membezakan produk akhir. Yang jelas dalam sistem 2 Counter attack ini ialah peranan Holding Midfielder yang sat back dan cuba wins the ball serta berupaya melakukan precise passes ke zonal yang sesedap rasa. Dalam sistem England, Holding Midfielder akan cuba memastikan flanker tank dibeban dengnag tugas yang banyak agar lebih fokus kepada larian dan crosses sahaja. Sebab itu precisive long ball yang tidak memerlukan winger melakukn tugas mengawal bola akan cuba dikurangkan.
Dalam sistem counter attack dari chanel tengah pula jelas perlu ada special box to box player mahupun special talent attacking midfielder yang berimaginasi dan bervisi tinggi. Dalam erti kata lain mereka adalah sangat elusif dan menngemari expensive dan expansive football. Dalam chapter seterusnya saya akan membawa anda ke dunia Guardiola ,Heynckess, Klinsmann dan Jurgen Klupp yang melakukan evolusi dalam quick counter. Barcelona dan Dortmund sangat berjaya dalam sistem evolusi yang dipanggil .............. . Nanti saya akan huraikan sistem counter attack ala Dortmund dan Guardiola. Yang pasti untuk lebih sistematik pastikan anda ada grid pitch latihan sendiri.

Raheem Sterling in England action against Norway
Gareth Southgate has hinted that Liverpool's Raheem Sterling may not be selected by England for this summer's European Under-21 Championship finals.
The 20-year-old played for the senior team in last year’s World Cup finals in Brazil and Southgate is not certain whether Sterling should face another summer of competitive action this time around.
The England U21 manager said: "Realistically, Raheem has become a very important player for the senior team and for Liverpool.
"There is a huge demand on him. Part of my role is looking at the development of individuals and I'm not convinced another tournament in the summer would be right for him.
"Of course he is a super player and, from a selfish point of view, it would be easy to try and grab all of those. But we have to look at the bigger picture,"
England are on course to qualify for next summer's European Championship in France so, by playing in the European U21 event in the Czech Republic in June, Sterling could end up playing in tournaments three years in a row.

Liverpool continue their Premier League campaign when they travel to Aston Villa, seeking to avenge defeat in the corresponding fixture back in September. Ben Twelves discusses the team selection options ahead of the match.
Brendan Rodgers’ improving Reds head to Villa Park on Saturday with another chance for the Reds to make progress in their task of clawing their way back into the race for Champions League qualification.
Liverpool have started to reignite their challenge for a top four finish in recent games and Rodgers’ side arrive in the midlands in their best league form of the season – unbeaten in the last five matches having collected 11 points from the last 15 available – and with Saturday’s visit being to the Premier League’s lowest scorers, Rodgers’ men have a huge opportunity to close the gap on fourth place again.
The Reds will of course have to hope that results elsewhere fall their way if they are to become genuine contenders in the sprint for Europe’s top competition, but before looking to assistance from others in the chasing pack, Liverpool must keep their side of the bargain over the next two winnable league games against Villa and Sam Allardyce’s West Ham either side of an FA Cup fourth round clash against Bolton.
A busy schedule is looming for Rodgers and his squad, but with a week break between last Saturday’s important victory at Sunderland and the match against Paul Lambert’s struggling Villains, Rodgers can afford to put rotation to the back of his mind and continue with his strongest team as he goes in search of another vital three points.
The Team
Rodgers has an injury-hit squad at his disposal for the clash with Kolo Toure away on international duty at the African Cup of Nations, Brad Jones, Jon Flanagan, and Joe Allen all missing again as well as the match coming too early for Daniel Sturridge to be involved as he continues his final part of recovery from injury.
The Reds also face the prospect of being without Steven Gerrard, who is a doubt after being withdrawn at half time against Sunderland last weekend with a groin injury, but the Captain is set to be monitored ahead of the clash along with Adam Lallana who could make a surprise return ahead of schedule.
A refreshed Raheem Sterling is set to return to the fold with Gerrard’s likely absence opening up a place for England international to come back into the team, with the only question mark being over whether that is in an attacking midfield role or up front.
Fabio Borini will be hoping Sterling enters into one of the positions in the two behind the striker in order to keep his place up front, as will Mario Balotelli who will be hoping that a lively cameo appearance in last week’s 1-0 victory persuades Rodgers to hand him a first start since the beginning of November.
Defensively Liverpool should remain unchanged with there being no need to increase Dejan Lovren’s involvement after the Croatian played the second half last Saturday, but Javier Manquillo will be hopeful of regaining his place at right wing-back if the impressive Lazar Markovic is chosen to play in the attacking three.
The Line Up
With the Liverpool boss set to stick to what’s worked best in the 3-4-2-1 formation, Rodgers has two main selection options two choose from for the match.
The first possibility could see only one change made to the team that started at the Stadium of Light being Sterling making a simple move into Gerrard’s advanced role alongside the Brazilian magician, Philippe Coutinho and behind Fabio Borini, who claimed the assist for Markovic’s winner and produced a tireless performance last weekend.
Choosing that option, Liverpool’s starting XI would look like this at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon:

Andy Hunter of The Guardian writes that “Liverpool are monitoring [Ryan] as Brendan Rodgers considers his options for replacing Simon Mignolet.”
“The 22-year-old Ryan, Australia’s goalkeeper at the World Cup in Brazil, signed a new four-year contract with the Belgium club in November and is one of several candidates under consideration by Liverpool.”
After the Liverpool Echo revealed that “Liverpool are unlikely to do much business between now and deadline day,” with “an experienced goalkeeper on a short-term basis” one of few avenues to explore, reports of summer interest in Ryan at this juncture are encouraging.
For many reasons, signing a new goalkeeper in January, particularly one so young and with no experience of the league, is an unsettling notion.
Ryan will be worth the wait, and Liverpool are wise to identify his talents this early.

Ryan is one of the world’s leading young goalkeepers and, at 22, is already an accomplished No.1.
Making his senior debut at the age of 18 for A-League side Central Coast Mariners in 2010, and made 80 appearances for the side.
A dominant, agile, front-footed goalkeeper, Ryan has impressed many with his confident displays in goal for Brugge.
Not least Mariners goalkeeping coach John Crawley, who outlined Ryan’s style of play last year for Four Four Two , claiming “he could walk into any European team.”
Furthermore, respected blog InBedWithMaradona recently outlined the progress Ryan has made of late:
“[Ryan] has continued to improve his all-round game and look much more assured under high crosses… His sublime distribution remains a huge plus and something that still sets him apart from his rivals. He is capable of launching passes onto the left boot of a winger in full flight; it’s a skill that makes his team frighteningly dangerous on the break.”
“The next 15 years of Mathew Ryan’s career should run as a parallel of the man he has described as his footballing hero, Mark Schwarzer.”
Ryan has made 21 Juliper League appearances this season, keeping seven clean sheets, as well as aiding Club Brugge’s cause in the Europa League, where they clash with Danish side AaB Fodbold.
Ryan is currently away with the Australian national side for the Asian Cup, where he serves as their No. 1 ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s Mitchell Langerak, and the Socceroos are buoyed by his presence.

In an environment such as the current, animosity stricken Merseyside, any mistake made by a new goalkeeper would be scrutinised and ridiculed.
At just 22, Ryan will not necessarily be ready to step in and delivery clean sheet after clean sheet immediately in the Premier League in January, and the subsequent microscopic criticism would be hugely damaging.
Instead, the prospect of a summer arrival is a more sensible suggestion.
A perfect example of this is the currently thriving Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea. In 2011, Alex Ferguson’s hand was forced by the announced retirement of long-term No. 1 Edwin van der Sar, and as early as March was vying for the services of De Gea as his replacement.
At the time, The Times reported this to be “so that he will have a full pre-season to settle in.”
This is a notion confirmed by De Gea himself, who identified this summer how important his first pre-season tour was:
“I have a very nice memory of my first moments on tour with United. I remember vividly meeting the players and the first training sessions with them and Sir Alex. It was a truly unforgettable experience. The tour helps you learn to live and train with great footballers.”
With this experience under his belt, and with the support of his now-familiar teammates, De Gea worked through early struggles in the Premier League and is now arguably the finest on this stage.
Furthermore, Rodgers himself has previously claimed it takes time in “coming to terms to what we are after.”
Ryan would benefit from a similar bedding in period, and could be helped further, as Hunter’s report suggests.
Two Goalkeepers
Interestingly, Hunter continues that “Rodgers [is] expected to be in the market for two goalkeepers this summer.”
With Mignolet clearly unfavoured and Jones looking unlikely to receive an extension on his current deal, which expires in the summer, signing Ryan and another goalkeeper is a bold move.
This opens up the possibility that Ryan, whose potential matches his quality, could serve as a No. 2 at Liverpool behind what could be a more short-term, ready-made No. 1.
The dominant frame of Petr Cech will pervade any speculation of this kind, and a summer move may be a possibility.
The 32-year-old shows no sign of supplanting Chelsea first-choice Thibaut Courtois and, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season, manager Jose Mourinho could be forced to sell the ‘keeper before he is able to leave on a free.
Although, as detailed, Ryan has the ability to perform on the Premier League stage due to his stature and agility, progressing behind an experienced, battle-hardened No. 1 would aid his development.

Crawley identified this, too, suggesting Ryan wouldn’t necessarily be ready “a ruthless English Premier League which is just fast and sometimes very physical.”
Rodgers made the mistake of throwing Mignolet in at the deep end, with no competition or cover, and the manager would be wise to learn from this.
In theory, signing Ryan and a goalkeeper like Cech could shore up the Liverpool goal for up to the next 15 years.
Either way, identifying the issue now, finding targets such as Ryan and moving fast to secure their services shows great forward planning and initiative by Rodgers and Liverpool.

Ryan would benefit from a similar bedding in period, and could be helped further, as Hunter’s report suggests.
Two Goalkeepers
Interestingly, Hunter continues that “Rodgers [is] expected to be in the market for two goalkeepers this summer.”
With Mignolet clearly unfavoured and Jones looking unlikely to receive an extension on his current deal, which expires in the summer, signing Ryan and another goalkeeper is a bold move.
This opens up the possibility that Ryan, whose potential matches his quality, could serve as a No. 2 at Liverpool behind what could be a more short-term, ready-made No. 1.
The dominant frame of Petr Cech will pervade any speculation of this kind, and a summer move may be a possibility.
The 32-year-old shows no sign of supplanting Chelsea first-choice Thibaut Courtois and, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season, manager Jose Mourinho could be forced to sell the ‘keeper before he is able to leave on a free.
Although, as detailed, Ryan has the ability to perform on the Premier League stage due to his stature and agility, progressing behind an experienced, battle-hardened No. 1 would aid his development.

Crawley identified this, too, suggesting Ryan wouldn’t necessarily be ready “a ruthless English Premier League which is just fast and sometimes very physical.”
Rodgers made the mistake of throwing Mignolet in at the deep end, with no competition or cover, and the manager would be wise to learn from this.
In theory, signing Ryan and a goalkeeper like Cech could shore up the Liverpool goal for up to the next 15 years.
Either way, identifying the issue now, finding targets such as Ryan and moving fast to secure their services shows great forward planning and initiative by Rodgers and Liverpool.
